In short, Karl is saying "Drive it like a 190Dc, 200D, 220D or 240D!"

Why send the pump to sweeden? There are Bosch shops that know MB pumps
in the US, and probably a few that "turn up" the dogde and frod pickups,
so are not opposed to pumping a little more fuel.

The kkk spools a bit faster than the garrett. So that is the first
question. Which do you have?

The thing that will help drivability most is to just keep it floored until
you hit target speed. You should think about putting a simple pressure
nipple, tubing and gauge through the window to check the boost. If not
hitting target psi (9psi iirc) then you could get more power by turning it
up to that, or a bit beyond to 12 or so.

Otherwise the only thing that will really help spool it is putting max
throttle instantly when you start to accelerate. Check your linkages to be
sure you are maxing the pump level with pedal on the floor.

Next step you can send the pump to Sweden and they will adjust it for max
fuel, 62cc/1000 injections per injector. This livens it up a bit.

OR pay the big bucks and go for a rebuild with larger elements. But then
you start to need a bigger turbo, which gets a bit complicated.

How long after start does it smooth out?

rod by 1.5 turns, which my research indicated should have increased the
boost by 4.5 psi. I initially measure 8 psi maximum boost before the
adjustment, then 9.5 psi immediately after, now I'm spot on at 12.5, which
is what I was aiming for. I'm wondering if the seat of the waste gate
valve was fouled with carbon and not sealing well, so I could never get
full boost, but now that I've bumped up the boost, exhaust gas temperatures
are up and the spring is pulling the waste gate valve more tightly closed,
and some of the carbon has burned off?

Regardless, this is just about the boost level I was looking for. Now
there is nary a hint of knocking / nailing, and very light smoke. I'm
going to keep watching the boost gauge for another week or so, drive it
hard, and see if I can burn any accumulated carbon out of the pre-chambers
and get this engine back to running like normal.

On the glow plug front, now I've got a rough idle after a cold start, so I
suspect a bad plug or two has developed. Replacing all the glow plugs may
happen very soon.

For what it’s worth, I found that Summit Racing sells the Bosch W123 headlight
doors for $50/each, but they order them on an as-needed basis so you have to
wait a good 30 days to get them. Also, they total out at $99.96 or something
like that, and Summit gives free shipping above $99.00.

The only other new headlight doors you can get are UROs, and they’re around
$75/each these days. At least that’s all I could find…

Re: [MBZ] My 87 wagon runs poorly - what to do?

2017-01-23 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Status report: Tonight on the drive home from work, boost was hitting as
high as 12.5 psi. I've done nothing since Saturday night, so I'm not sure
why measured boost jumped from 9.5 to 12.5 psi. I shortened the control
rod by 1.5 turns, which my research indicated should have increased the
boost by 4.5 psi.

No, I'm not venturing that far into the horsepower band. Others have done
this, but none of what I've read so far indicates that anyone else had this
problem.

This afternoon on the drive home, my boost gauge indicated about 12.5 psi
boost, and the car is really driving well now. There is still a hint of knock,
I expect that to clear up as I burn out the carbon. I don't know why I didn't
get this boost after the initial adjustment, maybe the waste gate seat was
dirty with carbon, and constantly leaking?

With increasing boost, the temperature of the charge air goes up, which
directly translates to higher exhaust gas temperatures. Increasing the
boost without adding fuel just adds heat, which is not very nice in terms
of engine wear. No gain in performance, shortens engine life. I don't

A better idea would be to just pinch off the hose, assuming an external
waste-gate. I would only do this with a boost gauge of some-sort in place,
even a Mity-vac that has a pressure reading option, so that before / after
can be compared. Over boosting for too long can very quickly lead to
piston meltdown.

Not sure. I thought the euro climate control had a separate button for the ac
compressor but I don't see such a button on this one.

So yesterday I pulled the valve cover to replace the seal. At the same time I
polished up the whole valve cover, making it nice and shiny. I also pulled the
air cleaner housing and disassembled it as best I could. I knocked off the
rusty parts with the polisher and sprayed it with a new coat of semi gloss

Earlier in the week I got the armrest I was looking for from “Reinvent The

the stock armrest on the driver’s door, which doesn’t have the “grab handle”

goes around the door handle release, too.

I haven’t decided if I like it yet or not. If I hike up my left leg towards
the door it gets caught between the handle and the steering wheel somewhat.

2017-01-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yeah, I'm not exactly sure how to go about cleaning that inner fender. It
appears to be from oil mist, I'm guessing, but it's pretty well dug in.

The brake fluid reservoir is actually pretty new, and I haven't had a chance to
attack the windshield washer bottle yet.

If there are any suggestions for noninvasive approaches to cleaning this area,
I'm all ears. I've taken some 3M adhesive removed to it and that hardly makes a
dent, which concerns me. That stuff is pretty brutal. I've rarely encountered a
situation where it doesn't make a dent.

[MBZ] OT: 2005 VW fun

2017-01-23 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Some of you might remember the other day when I bent the oil pan on the 2005
Golf TDI. I had that replaced and a metal skid plate (common upgrade)
installed.
On my way home from the garage the car made a weird sound and went way down on
power. The loss of power was consistent with "limp home" mode. I restarted the
car and it got better but was still somewhat down on power and now making a
weird wooshing noise. Later that night the CEL (check engine light) came on.
Codes said implausible signal from the MAF (mass air flow) sensor and bad boost
modulation.
The interwebs suggested a boost leak so Saturday I started looking. Found it at
the connection from the turbo to the intercooler. When I loaded the car onto
the tow dolly to take it to the garage I smacked the bottom edge of the bumper
on the dolly which seems to have jogged the clip that holds the pipe. I hate
how low this car is...
I couldn't see how the clip worked so I had to pull off the bumper which is
actually pretty easy. It took a LOT of fiddling but I finally got the how of
the clip and got it all back together. I also took a minute to zip tie the beat
up intercooler duct back into shape.
While I was there I drained maybe 2oz of motor oil out of the pipe to the
intercooler, this is supposed to be normal, what I've found since is the little
puff of black smoke on startup is gone and the car seems a little more
powerful. I think on startup a little of that oil was finding its way into the
engine and the oil was maybe hurting the airflow a little...
Anyway, love these cheap fixes.

It is old, and it is likely not worth much and you want to be rid of it.

Just dump it and get on with life. Be happy.

Left (passenger) side of the engine bay looks fantastic! Right side, eh,
now you need to replace the washer fluid reservoir and the brake fluid
reservoir, and clean that inner fender.

Re: [MBZ] MBC's

2017-01-23 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Mitch is probably right that an ALDA adjustment should be the first step.
Reducing or removing the shim would have same effect as turning the screw
in.

However, if you can believe the sales literature, the MBC can cause boost
to build faster (at an earlier RPM). If your waste-gate control valve has
a weak spring and is opening early, or leaking, then the MBC can help.

Re: [MBZ] Yesterday's Fun - 300D

2017-01-23 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Gerry,

Good to see you!

I used some 3M wheel with these little orange spines. It's probably as
aggressive as a wire wheel, but seems a little gentler, if that makes sense. I
believe it's called a Scotchbrite radial bristle wheel if memory serves me
correctly.

It did leave some fine scratches, but took a lot of the accumulated grunge off
with minimum effort.

Before I put the wheel to it I cleaned it with a scrub brush and Simple Green,
then popped it in a low oven (170F) to dry it out.

I did the same with the oil filler cap, too.

I'll be interested to see how long it retains the shiny surface. The engine
doesn't have leaks or anything flying around as far as fluids, so I'm hoping it
will stay that way for a while.

For what it's worth I added some wavy washers under the valve cover nuts, too.
There seems to be some confusion as to whether or not there should be a washer
under these (Mercedes says not based on the EPC) but some claim it's necessary
to prevent leakage of oil and oil mist from the valve area.

1/8 to 1/4 turn is all you need to loosen. You are just trying to allow
the copper washer to recenter. Yes, I'd have the springs, copper seals
and orings ready to go.

Larry Turner via Mercedes
January 23, 2017 at 5:37 AM
I've done this kind of torquing on cylinder heads but have a
question. When you say to tighten then loosen do you think loosening
by 1/2 turn would do it or should I remove all strain?

At the moment I am considering taking Peter's advice to replace the
spring, o-ring and copper washer Vs just re-torquing.

I think you said try re-torquing 1st and be ready to replace the guts
if that doesn't work? I think that's what I'll try. Maybe I'll even
try it when my wife gets home from work one day this week rather than
waiting for her day off.

But I'll go ahead and get the parts from the dealer so I'll have them
just in case.

Thanks Gang!

Thanks Curley -

I understand now. I think I was making things more complicated than
they need be. I have done some research on MercedesSource and better
understand what was meant by orientation I thought the rotation of the
valve was important - it seems some people get the Valves upside down
when replacing. That was not what I feared - I plan my jobs
carefully (you probably all guessed that from my emails ;-) and don't
think putting a valve on upside down would happen.

Anyway, I will order the parts from MB tomorrow and do the job
Thursday. Thanks again for everyone's help!!

THE "Procedure" for torquing the DV holders in the writeup i sent you
on the list. I do the first torque to about 12-15 ft-lb, then the
second to 22 and the third to 22 as specified. It is to make sure the
copper ring seals well and is centered.

By in sequence, I just meant in order, 1-5; or 5 to 1 if you prefer.
It is not like head bolts. Or you could Zundfogle it! (firing
order) that is up to you!

And, yes, I have quieted a noisy result, by simply loosening the DV
holders and re torquing them to 22 ft lb, or even 20. I had one pump
I could not get to quiet down at 22 ft lb. but at 20 it was fine.

Larry Turner via Mercedes
January 22, 2017 at 10:48 AM
So that's the "Procedure" that was mentioned earlier in this discussion?

I'll add new o-rings as well.

Is there a sequence in the Pressure Valves or can I start with #1 and
go one after another til I get to #5?

The orings generally get chewed up on removal, even if new. I always
replace them. Orings are relatively cheap. The cost of having to
redo the job far outweighs the cost of 6 or 7 orings and copper seals.

one at a time is good, but I do the torque sequence together. In
other words, put them all in finger tight, then follow the torque
instructions for the whole bunch in sequence.

Re: [MBZ] MBC's

2017-01-23 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Different issue.
The MBC just prevents pressure from reaching the wastegate solenoid, keeping
the wastegate closed until a higher pressure is reached.
Lag is the time it takes to reach the pressure the wastegate is set for.

I thought the high stall speed 1985 turbo was supposed to cut down on perceived
lag?
It's possible an ALDA tweak would get more fuel off boost and spin the turbo up
faster. If the car doesn't smoke at all at full throttle, I'd give this a try.

Re: [MBZ] My 124 is idling rough (91 300D 2.5Turbo)

2017-01-23 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes
I've done this kind of torquing on cylinder heads but have a question.
When you say to tighten then loosen do you think loosening by 1/2 turn
would do it or should I remove all strain?

At the moment I am considering taking Peter's advice to replace the
spring, o-ring and copper washer Vs just re-torquing.

I think you said try re-torquing 1st and be ready to replace the guts if
that doesn't work? I think that's what I'll try. Maybe I'll even try
it when my wife gets home from work one day this week rather than
waiting for her day off.

But I'll go ahead and get the parts from the dealer so I'll have them
just in case.

Thanks Gang!

Except for the cleaning, it is a simple easy job. Loosen the
keepers; take loose the lines; unscrew the dv holder, making sure the
spring does not drag out the pin of the DV with it; fish out the
spring and the copper seal. Flush the IP if the orings are so bad
they leave a black grit behind. (pump fuel in from the filter) Clean
up the DV Holder and put on a new oring.

Drop in the new copper seal, the new spring, screw in the DV Holder
finger tight. (repeat for each cylinder) Tighten them to ~12 ft-lb
(not much) Tighten all to 22 ft-lb. loosen, retorque to 22 ft lb.
(Still not much) It is about as tight as you would tighten a 6mm bolt
with a short 5mm allen wrench without straining. (just snug)

replace keepers; replace lines; bleed; start and listen for knocks.
Hopefully, it is ok. If so, bolt down the keepers and check your work.

hospital's operating room (other than clean Diesel fuel) You do NOT

right, you will spend more time cleaning than it takes to do the
actual job.

The only real problems I have had are:
1. someone tightened the keepers with a 1/2" drive rattle wrench. It
was very hard to get them loose. (T30)
2. on the same car, someone tightened the DV Holders with a rattle
wrench WAY over tight.
3. the orings are so old and brittle they crumble and leave gritty
black residue behind

and then the pump that was a problem in #1 and 2 was the one that
knocked when tightened normally, so it ended up with about 20 ft-lb.

Thanks Curley -

I understand now. I think I was making things more complicated than
they need be. I have done some research on MercedesSource and better
understand what was meant by orientation I thought the rotation of
the valve was important - it seems some people get the Valves upside
down when replacing. That was not what I feared - I plan my jobs
carefully (you probably all guessed that from my emails ;-) and
don't think putting a valve on upside down would happen.

The cost of having to
redo the job far

OK, I'll try the re-torquing 1st as you say, Yesterday I reinstalled
the lock plates properly - they had them overlapping others in the wrong
sequence. It wasn't a good time to do the re-torquing so I'll do that
Thursday.

Thanks,

Larry

and calibrated. But don't dwell on the worst case.

1. Retorque. try it. hopefully that will cure it.
2. if not, try retorque to 20 ft -lb.
3. if that does not cure it, try replacing all the springs, copper
seals and orings and follow the torque procedure.

4. If that does not cure it, back them off and try 20 ft lb.
5. If none of that works, I'd look for a good used IP. (and go
strangle the ham fisted rattle wrench jockey that ruined the IP)

But how do I know they are in the right position to begin with?
Perhaps they were removed or rotated at some time in the past? There
must be a single, correct starting position, right?
