I was reading a book by Janet Asimov. She posited that teleportation was
doable, but it required a receiver be transported to the end of the line. In
effect that would be the transportation of that entangled particle to the place
you want to go.

I know that Next Gen episode. Scotty is trapped in a Dyson Sphere.

So, as it relates to my conundrum, it would not be like Kirk and Spock going
back to save the Whales, or Picard and NCC 1701 E going back to save Zephram
Cochran from the Borg.I would have to be entangled on a quantum level to
teleport to anyplace. I and the SDL would go POOF! in a manner that deletes
the original and recreates it in the new location?Does this also satisfy
the conservation of energy? I am not really creating or destroying anything.
It just works? God is not rolling the dice with the universe?

If I am going to have to deal with wizards or aliens and their comings and
goings, they are just as likely to be using the flue network as they are to be
moving backward and returning along the timeline? That must mean that the cost
to go next door is much the same as it would be for me to get in the SDL and
zip back to 1986. Does the effect…? Well, it must, if going down the street
is the same as moving 30 years, I can just show up with the SDL in Dallas in
1986 as I am to run into Marty McFly in his Delorean at prom with his parents.

Quantum Entanglement Could Stretch Across Time

In the weird world of quantum physics, two linked particles can share
a single fate, even when they’re miles apart.

Now, two physicists have mathematically described how this spooky
effect, called entanglement, could also bind particles across time.

If their proposal can be tested, it could help process information in
quantum computers and test physicists’ basic understanding of the
universe.

“You can send your quantum state into the future without traversing
the middle time,” said quantum physicist S. Jay Olson of Australia’s
University of Queensland, lead author of the new study.

In ordinary entanglement, two particles (usually electrons or photons)
are so intimately bound that they share one quantum state — spin,
momentum and a host of other variables — between them. One particle
always “knows” what the other is doing. Make a measurement on one
member of an entangled pair, and the other changes immediately.

Physicists have figured out how to use entanglement to encrypt
messages in uncrackable codes and build ultrafast computers.
Entanglement can also help transmit encyclopedias’ worth of
information from one place to another using only a few atoms, a
protocol called quantum teleportation.

In a new paper posted on the physics preprint website arXiv.org, Olson
and Queensland colleague Timothy Ralph perform the math to show how
these same tricks can send quantum messages not only from place to
place, but from the past to the future.

The equations involved defy simple mathematical explanation, but are
intuitive: If it’s impossible to describe one particle without
including the other, this logically extends to time as well as space.

“If you use our timelike entanglement, you find that [a quantum
message] moves in time, while skipping over the intermediate points,”
Olson said. “There really is no difference mathematically. Whatever
you can do with ordinary entanglement, you should be able to do with
timelike entanglement.”

Olson explained them with a Star Trek analogy. In one episode, “beam
me up” teleportation expert Scotty is stranded on a distant planet
with limited air supply. To survive, Scotty freezes himself in the
transporter, awaiting rescue. When the Enterprise arrives decades
later, Scotty steps out of the machine without having aged a day.

“It’s not time travel as you would ordinarily think of it, where it’s
like, poof! You’re in the future,” Olson said. “But you get to skip
the intervening time.”

According to quantum physicist Ivette Fuentes of the University of
Nottingham, who saw Olson and Ralph present the work at a conference,
it’s “one of the most interesting results” published in the last year.

“It stimulated our imaginations,” said Fuentes. “We know entanglement
is a resource and we can do very interesting things with it, like
quantum teleportation and quantum cryptography. We might be able to
exploit this new entanglement to do interesting things.”

One such interesting thing could involve storing information in black
holes, said physicist Jorma Louko, also of the University of Nottingham.

“They show that you can use the vacuum, that no-particle state, to
store a lot of information in just a couple of atoms, and recover that
info from other atoms later on,” Louko said. “The details of that have
not been worked out, but I can foresee that the ideas that these
authors use could be adapted to the black hole context.”

Entanglement in time could also be used to investigate as-yet-untested
fundamentals of particle physics. In the 1970s, physicist Bill Unruh
predicted that, if a spaceship accelerates through the empty space of
a vacuum, particles should appear to pop out of the void. Particles
carry energy, so they would be, in effect, a warm bath. Wave a
thermometer outside, and it would record a positive temperature.

Called the Unruh effect, this is a solid prediction of quantum field
theory. It’s never been observed, however, as a spaceship would have
to accelerate at as-yet-unrealistic speeds to generate an effect large
enough to be testable. But because timelike entanglement also involves
particles emerging from vacuums, it could be used to conduct more
convenient searches, relying on time rather than space.

Finding the Unruh effect would provide support for quantum field
theory. But it might be even more exciting not to see the effect,
Olson said.

“It would be more of a shocking result,” Olson said. “If you didn’t
see it, something would be very wrong

Quantum Entanglement Could Stretch Across Time

In the weird world of quantum physics, two linked particles can share a single
fate, even when they’re miles apart.

Now, two physicists have mathematically described how this spooky effect,
called entanglement, could also bind particles across time.

If their proposal can be tested, it could help process information in quantum
computers and test physicists’ basic understanding of the universe.

“You can send your quantum state into the future without traversing the middle
time,” said quantum physicist S. Jay Olson of Australia’s University of
Queensland, lead author of the new study.

In ordinary entanglement, two particles (usually electrons or photons) are so
intimately bound that they share one quantum state — spin, momentum and a host
of other variables — between them. One particle always “knows” what the other
is doing. Make a measurement on one member of an entangled pair, and the other
changes immediately.

Physicists have figured out how to use entanglement to encrypt messages in
uncrackable codes and build ultrafast computers. Entanglement can also help
transmit encyclopedias’ worth of information from one place to another using
only a few atoms, a protocol called quantum teleportation.

In a new paper posted on the physics preprint website arXiv.org, Olson and
Queensland colleague Timothy Ralph perform the math to show how these same
tricks can send quantum messages not only from place to place, but from the
past to the future.

The equations involved defy simple mathematical explanation, but are intuitive:
If it’s impossible to describe one particle without including the other, this
logically extends to time as well as space.

“If you use our timelike entanglement, you find that [a quantum message] moves
in time, while skipping over the intermediate points,” Olson said. “There
really is no difference mathematically. Whatever you can do with ordinary
entanglement, you should be able to do with timelike entanglement.”

Olson explained them with a Star Trek analogy. In one episode, “beam me up”
teleportation expert Scotty is stranded on a distant planet with limited air
supply. To survive, Scotty freezes himself in the transporter, awaiting rescue.
When the Enterprise arrives decades later, Scotty steps out of the machine
without having aged a day.

“It’s not time travel as you would ordinarily think of it, where it’s like,
poof! You’re in the future,” Olson said. “But you get to skip the intervening
time.”

According to quantum physicist Ivette Fuentes of the University of Nottingham,
who saw Olson and Ralph present the work at a conference, it’s “one of the most
interesting results” published in the last year.

“It stimulated our imaginations,” said Fuentes. “We know entanglement is a
resource and we can do very interesting things with it, like quantum
teleportation and quantum cryptography. We might be able to exploit this new
entanglement to do interesting things.”

One such interesting thing could involve storing information in black holes,
said physicist Jorma Louko, also of the University of Nottingham.

“They show that you can use the vacuum, that no-particle state, to store a lot
of information in just a couple of atoms, and recover that info from other
atoms later on,” Louko said. “The details of that have not been worked out, but
I can foresee that the ideas that these authors use could be adapted to the
black hole context.”

Entanglement in time could also be used to investigate as-yet-untested
fundamentals of particle physics. In the 1970s, physicist Bill Unruh predicted
that, if a spaceship accelerates through the empty space of a vacuum, particles
should appear to pop out of the void. Particles carry energy, so they would be,
in effect, a warm bath. Wave a thermometer outside, and it would record a
positive temperature.

Called the Unruh effect, this is a solid prediction of quantum field theory.
It’s never been observed, however, as a spaceship would have to accelerate at
as-yet-unrealistic speeds to generate an effect large enough to be testable.
But because timelike entanglement also involves particles emerging from
vacuums, it could be used to conduct more convenient searches, relying on time
rather than space.

Finding the Unruh effect would provide support for quantum field theory. But it
might be even more exciting not to see the effect, Olson said.

“It would be more of a shocking result,” Olson said. “If you didn’t see it,
something would be very wrong with our understanding.”

...or the atmosphere is cooling and the earth is shrinking. Your perception has
no fixed point of reference. Therefore, the theory that the planet is warming
cannot be demonstrated and/or proven.
It is much like Einstein on his constantly accellerating train which is
approaching the speed of light.

Climate change or the wizards?

I know there is a bunch of top level science knowledge on this list, and I want
to know what the heck would really happen with teleportation. It seems like
the movies just bypass the reality of what takes place and … Poof!, you get
Scotty to beam you up. Driving the W126 pushes a bunch of air. #1 boy tells
me that single use teleportation would have no impact. ie. pulling a blade of
grass from a lawn does not create a statistically significant change. But the
constant yanking of stalks of grass must do something. A solution posited here
was that you move in a container. So, I am poofed in the SDL. What takes its
place from where I left, and what of where I land? Do I need to drive to a
teleportation station that will provide reciprocal matter transmission?

Maybe I remove a tablespoon of power steering fluid and put it in the
transmission. Do I need to remove the same volume of ATF to put back in the
steering pump? The dang movies never show that! Star Trek has fancy lights
that shimmer when they teleport. Is that the O2 in the Enterprise being sent
to the dead Red shirt on the planet while Kirk and the other guys bring
xenobacteria back?

OR! Was it all just there in the beginning with the big bang and will still be
there when the whole mess falls apart into the constituent sub atomic parts in
absolute 0 Kelvin? As it is, the SDL seems on an accelerated pace of entropy
which I am fighting on a weekly basis.

WX was pretty nice here yesterday in north central NC; I think I like global
warming. So I mounted the inside and outside units for the split mini heat
pump for my workshop/barn. I decided to wait and hire a HVAC pro for the
final hookup rather than buying a proper flare tool and replacing the oil in my
old vacuum pump. Then I installed hydraulic lines for the grapple on my tractor
and did a mini ops test; that grapple is awesome. I still need to fab a
bracket to hold the front end hydraulic quick couplings on the loader cross
tube, but that can wait. MBZ content? The tractor is Diesel.

But the same thing has been going on for millennia. Were it not, then I would
be living under two miles of ice. Who made the last ice age go away?

I am suspecting it is alien invaders who teleported down to inspect this big
ice ball planet. Their careless use of transporters caused the weather
patterns to change and the climate moderated. Then the poor Neanderthals were
invaded by white folk from out of Africa.

[MBZ] Window Sealant?

Max,

Was it you or someone else asking about windshield sealant?
(Scheibendichtmittel)

The proper Mercedes part is 001 989 31 20 and it comes in a caulking tube with
a removable nozzle that is designed to get into the grooves on the seals, or to
lay a flat bead.

I just bought some to do the replacement of the seal on my W123 rear window. I
think it was about $30 for the tube.

[MBZ] ADMIN - Re: physix problemz

2017-01-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Just for clarification, subject matter like this that can be construed as
political, so it is not considered acceptable here. Let’s keep it on cars and
related subjects.

If you’re unsure about a topic, run it by Kaleb or myself and we’ll let you
know.

Thank you,

80 year old Schwinn? Wow.
My Frejus probably isn't 50 yet. And I haven't ridden it in ten years. I doubt
I even have any tubular tires that are safe to ride on.
And my Maino is barely 40.

It’s the original one from what I can see, so I guess I’ll have to pull the

Well I don't know what he's upset about, the Jetta is one of my favorite cars.
Its small, quick and frugal to operate. I realized yesterday that I've put
around 45,000 miles on it, not bad for a rusty $1500 car.
Spent some time crawling around under it yesterday while the oil was draining.
The under floor rust really isn't as bad as I though it was. If I pull the
carpet out I could fix the worst of it in an afternoon and probably get another
year out of it. I was planning on replacing it in the spring but it might have
a new lease on life.

I have them living in my cars. Shortly after buying a Prius the ignition switch

Re: [MBZ] Part Number Question

2017-01-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yeah, I thought it was strange, too. I figured this out when I went looking
for the flat tube for the 300D. My parts guy traced it down and also reminded
me of when I bought one for the 300SD back in 1997 (is this guy good, or
what???)

Looks like Meyle is the only one making them now in the aftermarket, at least
that was the only one I could find. I just like the aesthetics of the thing.
The hard plastic tubes with the foamy coves that break down and the rubber
elbows and clamps just look lousy.

M. My bi-monthly care package from Bernie’s Fine Meats is due next week.
I want it NOW!

Have seen the Usinger’s elves on more than one occasion. Wonderful place to

It's strange they would update it for 126 but not 123 since it's the same

2017-01-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The flat one was designed to limit the amount of oil mist/vapor that could get
to the air cleaner, too. There are little baffles inside of it for this.

From what I can determine it was never spec’ed out for the OM617 on the W123,
but it was on the OM617 on the W126 chassis’ cars. I got one for my 82 300SD
some years back when I tried ordering a replacement tube and the tube part
number superceded to the flat one piece version.

Interestingly, the flat one is now NLA from Mercedes but they still sell the

Certainly. Look up “capillary action”.

But understand that water is probably puddling in that corner as well, despite
it draining away after maybe a short time.

Intrusion around the window openings is certainly a possibility, too.

One other thing also. From doing some research online I will be back
over there today and I am going to make sure the brick actually has weep
holes like it should, which is supposed to drain any water out from
behind the bring that may get in rather than it finding its way out to
other spots. I do not really think this is my problem but something I
want to check none the less.

We also seem to have a water intrusion issue at the window of one of the

wall was wet under the area where that window is and the surrounding areas were
dry.

2.) The ground is not graded away from the foundation at the corner. It can't
just be landscaping crap like mulch, you've got to go in there with soil and
fill the area enough to have a grade moving away from the foundation. Once
you've got good compacted soil properly graded you can cover it with
landscaping.

I think we're looking at multiple problems that have come together to cause the
damage over time. If you don't fix the gutter and grading, you're wasting your
time fixing the damaged boards.

And I would definitely replace everything with treated lumber. Sill plates

Automotive uses:

Carbide thin kerf blade makes a great panel cutter for removing damaged
areas. It's possible to make plunge cuts in center of a panel.. invent
other applications I haven't thought of.

Gasket scraper: Grind the teeth off of a straight blade [re-purpose one

DO NOT USE IT ON ALUMINUM.. aluminum is to soft and you will gouge the

Re: [MBZ] Need ideas for cleaning urethane sealant from windshield

2017-01-29 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Couple of times I've had used glass installed by a glass shop, the techs
just cut back the sealant with razor knife and left about 1/4 inch of
sealant on the surface.

They then bedded the used glass in new sealant, just like it was "new
glass".

The old sealant had good contact with the glass, no areas were separated.
Had no leak issues with "new install" of the "used glass".

Might work for you.

Re: [MBZ] Alternator question

2017-01-29 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Used alternator yes. I paid I think $42 with tax and a $5 core charge which I
think is forfeit since I had to rip the back cover of the old one to shreds to
get to look at the voltage regulator. The screws that hold the cover broke off
but stayed wedged in the plastic which being almost 20 years old broke easily.

BTW these use a similar voltage regulator to the MB alternators you may be
familiar with. The regulator on my old one had brushes worn down to nubbins. I
suspect it could be brought back to life with a new VR but in comparing the old
alternator to its replacement the old one was making a slight crunchy bearing
noise so even though the replacement is re-manufactured its in the car.
Also BTW the entire alternator process plus an oil change took just over 3
hours. Having done it once and figuring out what tools I need I could probably
cut that time in half. The toolset is super limited, the most important thing
was a 1 1/16" wrench (originally bought for 240D oil cooler connections, MB
content!) to wrench (HA!) the old alternator out.

A little later I had to move the car so I could push some snow (well ice

When I got home I put the meter on with the engine running, 14.8v just like

Is this something I should have expected? I don't remember going through this

I would look at doing the whole job from the top side, instead of trying

Harbor Freight sells a nice [cheap is nice when it works] flush cut
vibrating saw with all kinds of different blades. I would use one of
 those
with the grout cut blade to section the tile back far enough to gain
 access
to the underlay board. This could be done in such a way to preserve the
tile and reuse it. There is a blade that will go under the tile and
vibrate/cut the grout, thus releasing a row.

From that space, use the flush cut blade [you'll see what they are when
 you
see them] to cut the underlay board out [in pieces if need be] which will
then give you access to the floor joists. The flush cut blade will allow
you to cut right up to the drywall of the sidewall, without damaging the
drywall.. I've done this using a 6 inch drywall knife behind the flush
 cut
blade to keep it off the drywall surface. A piece of flat sheet metal
 would
do the same. The drywall knife just has a handy handle to move it along
 with the saw.

With a working opening, from the top side, sectioning out the damaged
joist, and sistering in fresh wood with screwed and glued plates would be
 "easy peasy"...

Cut a new piece of underlay board to fit the surgery hole.. screw it to
 the
"now fresh joists" and relay the tile you just salvaged... even the
 broken
tile would re-lay with solid floor under it.. there might be a hairline
crack, but I would Gorillia glue the pieces together, and lay it.. match
 the grout..done and dusted..

Saws are on sale often at Harbor Freight.. $40 or less..

From the ones I've seen no, since those don't seem to go into
the top of the air cleaner. Even if the hose goes from the valve
cover to the top of the air cleaner it would still probably not
work since the 616 is shorter so the distance will be shorter.
