[MBZ] SD 300TE

2017-06-28 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Yesterday on the Great Iowa Tractor Ride (2 1/2 days, 250 miles) on a
country road, I was passed by a white 300TE I'd guess 87-89, with SD
license plate. It was great to see the car in use! Fantastic
weather! Yesterday, our group was second out, leaving at 7 am. I never
thought I'd want a heat houser for the tractor ride at the end of June!
It was a Nippy 49ºF at the start. I wanted a heat houser yesterday morning!

I saw the guy with the monkey wards tractor. I was behind him in 2009.
Interesting tractor.

Denny Glade got a 4-71 jimmy diesel out of a junkyard and stuck it in
his Oliver 1955 to replace the original 4-71. You could hear that
howling miles away. The engine had not run in 30 years.

Zach bought an Oliver 70 with a stuck engine on June 17. He had it
there running on June 25.

The Ugliest tractor was probably a Minneapolis-Moline U, driven by the
younger Herman.

Back in 1987-1990 I lived in Beavercreek OH and belonged to the

president was a fellow named Walt Anderson. One of the more memorable
events was a club trip to this place:

Way cool. Part of the drive was through Amish country ; the contrast

Re: [MBZ] Fuel Mileage Premium v. Regular Experiment

2017-06-28 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
When I had them the E10 here was 89. they have since dropped it to 87.
But the M116 has run for 8 yrs on a steady diet of 87 regular. No
problems related to fuel. It did break a cheep prastic chain guide, and
needed rubber hoses for the idle air, but those are not fuel related.

BTW, the M180, and the M121 Yuro, also "required" spremium.

Craig's establishment. They are living in a 10k sqft commercial warehouse.
The office space is converted into living space, leaving the vast majority
wide open. I thought I had a large shop but mine could fit in the corner
of his. I then notice Craig has his very own Kenworth. Yes that's right.
He also has a 53' box trailer to go with it. All parked inside this
massive warehouse. Craig decided rather than paying a moving company he
would just buy his own equipment. It gets better. Craig also owns a
Peterbuilt which they decided was too small so they bought the Kenworth.
So, if anybody needs a big rig, Craig is your man. So after I got the 240D
loaded up Craig took me for a ride to town in the Peterbuilt to show off
his truck driving skills. As it turn out, unknown to any of us, Craig
actually went to truck driving school a couple of years ago to learn how
to drive his big rigs and got a CDL. Here are a few photos for your
 enjoyment.

#1 boy has buddies who rent an old B-52 hanger in Williston, ND. They pay $1k
each month. From what I am told, it has not been cleaned out, but holds
decades of accumulated parts and things.

There are a few spots around SEA that have less than spectacular property
values, such that dilapidated large storage space could be had for reasonable
cost.

Typically there is a knock sensor on the engine, and ignition timing is
retarded when you get knock, may also richen the fuel.

The difference can be 10% or more, depending on driving conditions and fuel,
but usually it's cheaper to use premium.

When I was in high school Dad and I were shooting 100 rounds (ie 4 rounds of
trap) each two or three days a week (three in the summer, two in winter) so
something like 20,000 rounds every year, all loaded with a single stage MEC
press, a MEC Jr maybe? I forget, its been a long time...
Actually worse was when we were shooting Hunters pistol silhouette, that was 40
shots per round, we'd each shoot a .22 and a centerfire pistol. I was using a
.357, Dad used .30 carbine. 40 rounds of pistol ammo takes a lot longer than
the same of 12ga.

My mom bought a used Malibu that had two lockouts in the previous year on its

the door opening in the body) looked like somebody had vigorously attacked them
with a prybar, like the ones with a 3/8" square shank and a screwdriver handle,

True. The cost per mile at 23 MPG with 87 was $25.87. And the cost at 25.4
mpg with 91 was $26.55. So, the premium was slightly more expensive. On the
same trip previously I got 26 mpg (I don’t know what the difference was). If I

The car is "meh". As a car, it's fine. It's the high operating costs that
frost me. And yes, so long as we can keep it patched up, even with a
$5,000 engine (estimated) every 4.5 years I'm _still_ dollars ahead
compared to the usual US car owner. Which is why I'm lobbying for that. I
think she'll go for that, at least one more engine's worth.

I found it very amusing that I went to fetch her in the 560 SEL that she
dislikes so, which had been meant to be hers. Said car has _more_ miles on
it than hers and is still running strong.

[MBZ] Fuel Mileage Premium v. Regular Experiment

2017-06-28 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I decided to try an experiment on fuel mileage on my BMW. I have had to travel
a lot lately and thought a (admittedly unsophisticated) experiment might be
interesting.

My car is a 1999 BMW 740iL. It is a big heavy car and I have been
consistently surprised by the fuel mileage. In the last weeks I have driven
almost 2000 miles. I checked this morning and my overall gas mileage has been
25 mpg.

BMW recommends premium gas. Most of the time I get premium. But, before my
first trip (500 miles) I filled up with 87. My gas mileage was 23. Then I
filled up with 91. On the same trip, I got 25.4 mpg. The way I understand it
is that the car runs better on premium. But, it will run fine on 87. Although
with 87, the computer compensates and performance is slightly lessened. I tried
to keep my speed consistent with the prior trip. I checked the tires to make
sure they were filled the same and the same people and stuff was on board for
both trips. I tried to limit the variables.

Based on my experiment, premium does offer advantages on my car. With better
performance and power, it took less fuel to drive the same road at the same
speed.

Re: [MBZ] BMW garbage

2017-06-28 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

My take on it is:
Jim does not like it and never has.
However, if it makes his wife happy, he may have to hold his nose and
carry on.
If she has become unhappy with it, he can patch it up and dispose of it
before some other bad things happen to it.

That is why I asked if she still likes it.

The main problem that I see with the above is - what will she want to
replace it with?

I got locked out of out Dodge RAM once and the guy had a cool little inflatable
pouch he slipped into the door, it had a little pump like a blood pressure
cuff, opened enough that we could reach in with a wire and poke the button for
unlock. Worked slicker than a smelt.

Re: [MBZ] Shotgun Choke Question

2017-06-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Dad has one that has a pneumatic actuator which is usually referred to as
"dangerous" due to the way it suddenly actuates. We're planning to convert it
to hydraulic, the arm is quite heavy with all the actions that happen on each
throw. Load a couple thousand with that and you'd have some strong arms.

Our SDL spontaneously locked its only key inside the car on a road trip
once. We pried open the door at the top of the window, using a non-marring

Peter's idea, combined with tow it out to make room for now.

I'd break a rear door quarter (fixed) window if necessary, I'll bet that

Karl.

Dumb idea #2.

Pull the top rear of the drivers door out just enough to get a straightened
coat hanger onto the inside door lever?

I have also seen a length of cord with a loop in the middle insinuated through
the door to body gap and activate the door pull.

YMMV
