As G Mann wrote: The involvement of the brain is now a major interest of those
researching the cause and treatment of tinnitus. Following is one interesting
approach. Research on the cause(s) of tinnitus are interesting, but since
Andrew is probably most interested in treatment and relief, he might be better
off going to a clinic that specializes in treatment and relief. Then, if that
clinic affords no relief, he still has the option of going to a clinic doing
research on tinnitus. Of course, that is just a guess since there is no way of
knowing which clinic in the DC area would help Andrew the most.

Neuroscientists Identify Brain Mechanism Responsible for Tinnitus, Chronic Pain

Neuroscientists at Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) and Germany’s
Technische Universität München report that they’ve identified the brain
mechanism responsible for tinnitus and chronic pain — the symptoms that can
persist long after an initial injury.

In an article slated to appear in the October 2015 issue of Trends in Cognitive
Sciences, researchers explain that identifying the underlying problem is the
first step to developing effective therapies for tinnitus and chronic pain. In
their article, the scientists describe how the neural mechanisms that normally
“gate” or control noise and pain signals can become dysfunctional, leading to a
chronic perception of these sensations. In their study, the researchers traced
the flow of these signals through the brain and showed where “circuit breakers”
should be working, but aren’t.

In both disorders, according to the research team, the brain has been
reorganized in response to an injury in its sensory apparatus. Tinnitus can
occur after the ears are damaged by loud noise or other issue, but even after
the brain reorganizes itself, it continues to “hear” a constant hum or drum.
Chronic pain can occur from an injury that often is healed elsewhere in the
body but persists inside the brain.

Josef Rauschecker, PhD, DSc, Georgetown University Medical Center wrote:

“Some people call these phantom sensations, but they are real, produced by a
brain that continues to ‘feel’ the initial injury because it cannot
down-regulate the sensations enough,” said Josef Rauschecker, PhD, DSc,
director of the Laboratory for Integrative Neuroscience and Cognition at GUMC.
“Both conditions are extraordinarily common, yet no treatment gets to the root
of these disorders.”

The researchers report that areas of the brain responsible for these errant
sensations are the nucleus accumbens, the reward and learning center, as well
as other brain regions that serve “executive” or administrative roles, such as
the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VNPFC), and the anterior cingulate cortex.
All of these areas are also important for evaluating and modulating emotional
experiences, according to Rauschecker.

“These areas act as a central gatekeeping system for perceptual sensations,
which evaluate the affective meaning of sensory stimuli — whether produced
externally or internally — and modulate information flow in the brain. Tinnitus
and chronic pain occur when this system is compromised,” Rauschecker says. He
notes that other issues often arise in concert with tinnitus and/or chronic
pain, such as depression and anxiety, which are also modulated by the nucleus
accumbens. Uncontrollable or long-term stress is another important factor in
these symptoms.

The brain plasticity that produces some of these changes provides hope that
this gatekeeping role can be restored. Because these systems rely on
transmission of dopamine and serotonin between neurons, drugs that modulate
dopamine may help restore sensory gating.

Markus Ploner, MD, PhD, TUM School of Medicine
“Better understanding could also lead to standardized assessment of
individuals’ risk to develop chronic tinnitus and chronic pain, which in turn
might allow for earlier and more targeted treatment,” said Markus Ploner, MD,
PhD, a consultant neurologist and Heisenberg Professor of Human Pain Research
at the Technische Universität München (TUM) in Germany.

Rauschecker, an expert in tinnitus, collaborated with Ploner, who studies
chronic pain, during his senior fellowship at the Institute of Advanced Study
at TUM. Co-authors include Audrey Maudoux, MD, PhD, from GUMC and Elisabeth
May, PhD, from TUM.

Thanks again. I had always thought that tinnitus meant ringing in the ears
- a terrible affliction. My "constant steam radiator" is actually not that
disruptive, as the only adverse effect is diminished hearing acuity.
Still, I don't know if this will worsen or transform over time to something
different/worse, so I will try to find a qualified practitioner to get
checked out and rule out any serious underlying causes. It better not be
diesel pollution. ;)

P.S. I began the Dillon Experiment this morning by eliminating my massive
daily does of vitamin B12. We'll see what happens..

Ha I think I am going to keep this E300 now that I have it running well,
or at least try to sell it for some good money now not Okie money.  I
need to check the GPs on it though, see what those codes are about. I
don't need another car but it is not bad, would need a new set of tires
if I was to drive it much.

The owner replied to my query of where it is, it is about an hour away.
I axed him for interior pics, if I don't hear back I'll call him to try
to go look at it the next coupla days, maybe take the trailer and some
$$ and see what I can do.

[MBZ] M116 Popcorn

2018-03-13 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

OK Youse Guyz with M116/M117 experience:

Today I got back to that M116 that is not stuck, but won't turn over
completely on 2 pistons TDC. It turns about 330-345 degrees.

I cranked up the BIG compressor and blew air in the 2 offending holes,
(plugs out). Out of the one on the left bank pops..

Wait for it! ...

. ..

POPCORN!

Yep, yellow popcorn kernels.Coming out of the 3rd hold back on the
left bank.

The plugs and plug wires did not appear to be disturbed. The
distributor was out, presumably broken/bent in the collision, or
possibly robbed shortly after the accident.

HOW COULD POPCORN GET IN THE CYL IF THE PLUGS WERE NOT DISTURBED?

Presumably the only other way was through the open intake valve. The
spring loaded "valve" on the top of the engine (where the air cleaner
covers the intake) was in place, and there did not appear to be any
popcorn there. I will start to pull the stuff off the top of the engine
tomorrow, to see if I find any other clues.

When I cleaned the engine outsides, there was no popcorn evident.

Is there something in the engine valley under the fuel distributor that
meeses can chew through to store popcorn in the engine?

The big air horn appears to be intact. the air hoses appear to be
intact. (in all cases, as far as I can see with the top of the engine
assembled.)

Thanks! Time to apply for a position that includes a raise. I've got some
more certifications to get over the next year, but right now I'm pretty

No, it came back out the plug hole. I wish I had my blow gun with the

easier. If the intake valve was open, the exhaust would be closed.

would be far more of them making appearances at PnP. Somebody is holding on
to them, or allowing them to rot in the weeds of the back 40. The W140 is
about the oldest in the yards at the moment. Mostly w210 and newer up to

before in the D.C. area.

Un-popped? Must have been mice, stored somewhere in the intake, then sucked in
when the engine was cranked.

[MBZ] OT 2000 Dodge Durango question

2018-03-13 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Today, I bought a 2000 Dodge Durango with Carfax verified 43,000 miles on it,
5.2 L V8 engine. I found something very interesting going on. It will not crank
at all unless the light switch is turned one click to the right, just before
the position to turn on the lights. I have never heard of this happening
before. It is as if the starter circuit has been wired into the light switch.

2018-03-13 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
On crypsler 300s when you turn the steering to the right, the RF window
goes down. Could be some similar gremlin. Could be something screwed
up in the steering column wiring. (light dimmer crossed with starter
wire?) bad insulation?
Starter/trans lockout crossed with light low/high (dimmer) in the column
or underdash or in the console?
