I'm not sure, but stuff that's not in stores can be ordered for in-home
delivery at Advance and Autozone. Or you can order them from river of large

Is there a specification for how long the wet part of the wire should be?
I would presume there would be a band of min and max.

The 722.6 dipstick tool measures the fluid level from the bottom of the pan,
instead of from the top of the tube like a normal dipstick.

If you don't want to wait for one from Amazon, you can go down to West Marine
and buy a chunk of 1x19 stainless rigging wire, just needs to be long enough to
reach the bottom of the pan. Then measure the length of the wet part of the
wire.

I don't see the red lock pins for the dipstick tube cap anywhere locally except
the dealer, Autozone catalogs them but doesn't stock them in the stores near me.

The current 2" Curt offering for W163 bolts to the four hitch mount holes in
the bumper frame and is rated for 3500lb.
The 2" Draw-Tite is similar to the Curt, but also includes a couple of
reinforcing brackets that strengthen the bumper frame at the ends where it's
welded to the frame rails, and is rated for 5,000lb if you install the
reinforcements. I never knew why they did that, as I thought the W163 was rated

I think I've seen W163 with 1 1/4" receivers on them, don't ask me what's up

2018-08-24 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
My wife’s 2012 ML did not have the towing option so I put a hitch on it for a
bike rack. If you want lights and to actually tow something the controller and
connecter and light cable all need to be Benz parts to talk to the head nanny
that monitors braking and stability and whatever else so the light don’t freak
it out, and something hanging off the back doesn’t make it do untoward things.
It’s like a $2k deal to get it all set up, I think the box is maybe $1100.

So that’s a 164, the 163 might not have smart enough nannies to care.

Re: [MBZ] I'm thinking about this. CARFAX???

2018-08-24 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Should I get a rebuild kit of some sort with various bits or would that
one spring Mitch linked to be sufficient?

https://www.sonnax.com/parts/2313-regulating-pressure-control-valve-spring

That site has all the components listed, this spring seems to be the one
related to the reported issue as Mitch observed.

This spring along with a fluid/filter change and general look-around
seems a lot easier than pulling the tranny and throwing a $500 pump at
it, or swapping in a dubious used one at $250.  They also list some pump
bushings, I guess I would have to pull the pump to see what that is
about if indeed the pump is inop

I have no experience with those transmissions - but in theory...

Weak spring causes low pressure.  Fluid is thick when cold and so
has plenty of pressure.  warm/hot fluid is thin, pressure drops,
 transmission can't hold.

Sounds good - but a pressure regulator should maintain a
particular pressure - unless it's just a pressure limiter.

 All just speculation *smiles*

Re: [MBZ] I'm thinking about this. CARFAX???

2018-08-24 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Gerry's got a good point, I think there were two relatively simple / cheap
fixes, the conductor plate and some other connection on the trans where the
o-ring fails and allows ATF to wick up into the wiring bundle and cause
havoc.

It has also been mentioned that a weak battery will cause a low voltage
condition which manifested as transmission problems, so monitoring the
electrical system / measuring the system voltage when cold and comparing to
the "hot enough that the tranny dies" may be worth keeping in mind.

I have no experience with those transmissions - but in theory...

Weak spring causes low pressure. Fluid is thick when cold and so
has plenty of pressure. warm/hot fluid is thin, pressure drops,
transmission can't hold.

Sounds good - but a pressure regulator should maintain a
particular pressure - unless it's just a pressure limiter.

All just speculation *smiles*
