It is my considered opinion that the present principles of "Diversity" and
"Political Correctness" have accelerated the Darwin Theory of "Only the
Strong Survive".
Ultimately, all those focused on whether the sit or stand to pee instead of
improving the human race will perish, and those who know not to piss
themselves and survive and thrive will survive to breed.
As for myself, "You can't kill me, you can only wish you did."
[Sum total of an attitude that comes from having served in hostile fire
actions and 70+ years of experience dealing with the human race.]

Interesting:  Both springs were broken.  between 1/4 and 1/2 of bottom
coil.   I have springs.

The brake backing plates are rusted tight to the wheel carrier.  I am
soaking them.  I had wheel carriers, but I guess last year when I
cleaned out the shed, I junked them.  So I need brake backing plates,
(plate and ring) as these will  get trashed when I have to take them off.

Anyone got 124 rear wheel carriers with backing plates or backing plates
and clamp rings?

I am assembling the next orders for links, bushings, grommets for the e
brake cables etc.   I had that ready before I started welding.   Having
the welder crap out really delayed this project (along with work and
holidays.

I just looked, there were only 5 data points for a limited time (mostly
specific days recently), one at Lowes, 2 at road intersections, one in
the middle of the airport here, and one at the beach.  On another day it
had me at home.  I'm thinking that this is when you might use Google

that location stuff off on my phone, it seems to work.  It is kinda

A few hours soaking, wiggling and a final little pry with the prybar,
and it popped out.    I have the whole thing on a bench now.   Subframe
has worrisome rust on a link gusset, but it will probably be ok.   Max
has a new one, and there is one here that is not rusty, but I have to
drive to the place, crawl in the weeds, and try to get it out.   Diff
and links, wheel carriers, etc are already gone, so it is just the
subframe left under that car. And I'd have to negotiate some price for it.

Or I can clean up and paint this one.    I intend to post some pictures.

Can you just vibrate it a bit from whatever direction you can get at

I'm assuming those who think I have scale in the water heater or at least on
the elements are correct.

So I just ordered 2 44x7/8" mag rods (Rheem) from your pal John Menard for $27.
I put a new anode in my parents' water heater in 2012 and installed my new
heater in 2013 so it's time to do both.
When I swap the mag rods I'll drain the water out of mine and pull the lower
element. Then decide if I need to replace elements, clean elements, or get a
few pounds of citric acid and descale the whole tank.

Unless the place has done some serious upgrades to power supply in the past 45
years, there is going to be many cold/dark nights. I recall when the plant
they just shuttered came online. Big cheers that there would be reliable power
so the economy could grow and Helvetia would be safe for many years from power
failures and brown outs. There were a few cold and dark winter nights in
Zurich, even with conservative power usage. The country runs on electricity,
well not the cars, but maybe with all the battery cars, they are sucking more
electrons. Maybe the French are providing the electrons to keep CERN lit.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Electric water heater screaming at me

2019-12-20 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I think I would agree. Given the reasonable cost of elements, I think I
would put 2 new ones in. Then you should be good for a while.  No sense
working on it again soon. I don't know that I would bother changing
thermostats if they appear to be functioning properly.

If the pressure relief valve does not show signs of leaking water, then
it is likely fine too. I know they can shriek if the pressure causes
them to open but they will pretty much always leak water if that is the
case.

There is no real need to drain the tank in order to install the anode.
It normally goes in from the top. Turn off the water and maybe drain off
a little bit and then unscrew the anode and put the new one in. If you
do not have a lot of headroom over the tank, get one of the segmented
anodes.

The suggestion that the scream is caused by the scale on the element is
something I am unfamiliar with. My experience has been  pretty much all
with soft water and I have not encountered that sort of thing.

They sell kits for around $30 with two elements, two gaskets, and two

Or new elements are $5 (silver colored) $10 (copper) $20 (folded large surface

I think I'll get that magnesium rod ordered and ignore the noise until it gets

Verizon is garbage where I live. Both places.

Sitting in my SEA living room I have almost two bars. Massive picture window
with line of sight to the tower. Using it as hotspot, there is almost 56k baud
using USB cord. Wireless hotspot is about 32k.

ANC is not that good either. Verizon is new (roll out of 4G) to the market and
coverage is spotty. In the house I get almost three bars. Do not need to use
hotspot, so never did speed test. As it is, the wifi (DSL) is almost as fast
as using the phone itself for streaming. The in air wifi on Alaska Airlines is
really good for in flight streaming

[MBZ] Interesting information from Google

2019-12-20 Thread Craig via Mercedes
I have done so many searches for property in North Carolina Google thinks
that is where I am ...

Since duckduckgo.com is abandoning TLS 1, which is what my ancient
Seamonkey uses, I did a Google search for a site (which turned up a
negative result even though I was looking at the thing for which I
searched). I noticed at the bottom of the results page a line which
said,

North Wilkesboro, North Carolina - From your Internet address - Use
precise location - Learn more

Clicking on "Learn more" took me to:

https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/179386?p=ws_settings_location&hl=en

On that page, I saw,

If you’re using a browser, like Chrome or Safari, you can see your
location and update it directly from a search results page.

Which is what I had experienced with the search I did.

The interesting part of the page, to me, at least, is

Stop sharing your location

You can stop sharing your location with Google by changing your
settings, but Google may still suggest a location based on your IP
address, recent locations, or Location History . If you don’t want
any location history shared, see your Google Maps Timeline.

The phrase "Google Maps Timeline" is a link, so I clicked on it, which
took me to:

https://support.google.com/maps/answer/6258979

There is other interesting stuff on that page (like Web & App Activity),
but I noticed,

Google Maps Timeline

You can view and manage your Location History information through
Google Maps Timeline, which is available to both mobile and desktop
users. In Timeline, you can edit specific entries from your Location
History, delete information from ranges in time or delete all of your
Location History data. Your Timeline is private, so only you can see
it.

If you have other settings like Web & App Activity turned on and you
pause Location History or delete location data from Location History,
you may still have location data saved in your Google Account as part
of your use of other Google sites, apps, and services. For example,
location data may be saved as part of activity on Search and Google
Maps when your Web & App Activity setting is on, and included in your
photos, depending on your camera app settings.

So, if you allow it, I presume, Google can track where you have been in
addition to where you are.

Now if we could just trust them ...

[MBZ] OT: End of the Nuke Era in Switzerland

2019-12-20 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
SWITZERLAND47-year-old nuclear power plant shuts down on live TVPublished:
Friday, December 20, 2019

Switzerland today shut down one of its oldest nuclear power plants, part of
a plan to end the domestic production of atomic energy before the middle of
the century.

Operator BKW took the Mühleberg Nuclear Power Plant, located 25 miles west
of the capital Bern, off the grid shortly after midday in a ceremony
broadcast live by Switzerland's main public TV station.

BKW, which is majority owned by the canton of Bern, said it plans to begin
dismantling the plant in January, a process that will take until 2034.
Decommissioning and deposing of radioactive remains is estimated to cost 3
billion Swiss francs ($3.1 billion).

Mühleberg is the smallest of Switzerland's four remaining nuclear power
plants. It began operation in 1972.

After the 2011 Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster in Japan, Switzerland
decided to gradually phase out nuclear power.

Switzerland is home to the world's oldest still-operating nuclear power
plant, Beznau, which will be shut down toward the end of 2029.

The remaining two nuclear plants, Gösgen and Leibstadt, will be shuttered
around 2040 and 2045, respectively.

Switzerland plans to significantly increase the production of renewable
energy from solar and wind over the coming decades to meet its power needs.
As part of the European grid, Switzerland also buys electricity from
neighboring countries such as France, which has numerous nuclear power
plants.

Earlier this week, campaigners submitted enough signatures to force a
referendum on incorporating the goal of making Switzerland "climate
neutral" by 2050 in the country's constitution. Doing so would require
ending virtually all burning of fossil fuels by midcentury. *— Associated

Diff is only connected to subframe. I think you've hit all the right
points.

I've got a spare subframe (no diff or axles) you can have if you want to
drag it away from SC.

Karl or others:

Since Karl has recently done this, I think he has most of the answers.

I am fixin ta take out the rear subframe of the 124 2.5.   As I
recall, I have to take out the exhaust, driveshaft rear flex, sway bar
links, shocks, brake calipers, ABS Sensor in Diff., parking brake
cables, and of course, the 4 main subframe bolts.  Am I missing anything?

As I recall, the diff has 2 big bolts at the back (10mm allen I think)
and 2 smaller bolts at the front.   I think these are all into the
subframe.  Is that right?

What is the best way to lower the unit?   I hope I can balance it on the
floor jack while I roll it out from under.

More important, what is the best way to raise the subframe  back up into
position?  Will I need stacks of blocks or an extra person to help
balance it on the jack as it goes up?

Need to replace the rear brake lines, brake hoses, possibly calipers, Rt
wheel bearing, parking brake cables,  weld up some rusted holes in the
body, patch others, derust, clean and paint subframe, and probably
replace the links.   May need to replace the park brake shoes while
there.   (YUK)

It has no antislip, so single brake line to the rear, and a T.   I only
need to replace the lines from the T out, and the hoses.

The Costco white cotton socks are really good too, nice and thick and

We just discovered the fancy wool socks after our backpacking son raved
about his Darn Tough socks. We went to the newly opened REI store in OKC
and found many choices - multiple thicknesses in multiple brands. I bought
one pair each of Darn Tough, Smartwool, and the REI house brand. So far, I
can not tell any difference (tried to match medium thickness across all of
them). However, the lifetime replacement guarantee from Darn Tough is hard
beat - time will tell.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Electric water heater screaming at me

2019-12-20 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

Electric tanks normally last better than that in my experience.
Is it leaking somewhere? That might account for the high pitched squeal.
I think I would look first at the pressure relief valve. That might be
the source of the sound if it is leaking slightly. If the tank is really
hot that is supposed to bleed off pressure so that you do not create
your very own rocket.
Thermostat should not be difficult to change and be readily available
but I think I would check the elements to see if they are good first. I
would think you can easily test the thermostat to see if it turns on and
off with a multi meter just checking for continuity to see at what
temperature it turns on and off. If you have a temperature meter of some
sort, you can verify the actual tank temperature too.
I assume 240 Volt.  Are both elements the same? Sometimes a larger
element on top and a smaller one on the bottom. I would normally test to
see if they draw current by using a clamp on meter. They should draw
equal current across each side. A 3000W element should draw somewhere
around 12 amps if I recall correctly. P=V X I so you can easily
calculate what the Amps should be given the size of the element and the
voltage.
You may need to turn the upper element off in order to get the bottom
one to turn on. They normally only work one at a time. If the upper will
not turn down enough to shut off, use pliers and pull the little pin on
the thermostat to permit you to turn the needle further back.
Should be lots more info on the net but HWT are pretty simple and you
should be able to determine the problem and get parts from the local big
box stores.

I trust you are aware that it is not a good idea to work on it with the
power turned on except for the times when you need to check amperage etc.

Turn a faucet to relieve the pressure, and wow that's hot.
Pulled the disconnect again and took the cover off the thermostat.
With power on, it makes the noise. Turning the thermostat down does not stop
the noise.
Turning the thermostat down all the way doesn't shut it off. And did I mention

Great...

So, either I learn how to swap a T-stat, I put the old propane heater back in,

Approach with caution. I think I've dealt with Kenny before, was not
pleasant to talk to. Maybe he was having a bad day. He had a nice 124 2.5
turbo on craigs list some years ago, someone asked me to get the
particulars on it, after 1 phone call the interest from the potential buyer
withered and died. IIRC, Kenny was hostile to the idea of me inspecting a
car for the potential buyer and even hostile to getting a PPI, but wanted
big bucks. I think Kenny flips cars for a few bucks on the side.

Re: [MBZ] Cell phones, long post

2019-12-20 Thread dan--- via Mercedes
I’ve mentioned this previously and it’s probably not an option for Kaleb, but
around here Spectrum (Charter bought out Brighthouse and this is their new
name) piggybacks on VZW for $14/month for 1Gb or $44/month for unlimited data.
You can BYOD for newer phones (iPhone SE or 6s is the oldest Apple stuff, don’t
know about Android) so you’re not even obligated to buy hardware from them,
although they do offer device contracts like other carriers.

That’s an all inclusive price, too. I’m covering four lines right now with a
monthly cost of $56. Your data is polled among the devices, too, so if the
usage is lopsided and one exceeds their limit you don’t get dinged as long as
you haven’t exceeded the total.

Re: [MBZ] Cell phones, long post

2019-12-20 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

My neighbor asked me about CC because she can get it cheap through AARP, so I
looked into it last month.
I didn't see any CC plans that I couldn't equal or beat with Red Pocket or
Tracfone (now that Tracfone has monthly plans), and the AARP 5% off didn't
change that. TF gives 5-10% off to anybody if they sign up for auto-renew.

If T-Mo coverage is good enough for you, Mint has really great prices.
One of my Tracfones is currently on T-Mo. Coverage sucks away from towns and
freeways, but I do get some signal at home which I didn't 8 years ago. When
it's working, it's faster than VZN but I can't seem to complete a phone call
from my house without getting dropped. A couple months ago it took me several
calls just to listen to my voice mails.

All the MNVOs buy tower time from the majors, I forget who CC uses, but TF uses
ATT,VZN,and T-Mo, RP uses ATT,VZN,T-Mo and Sprint. The only differences between
MNVOs are whose towers they put you on and how easy they are to deal with when
you need to change or fix something. RP has some really great deals on eBay if
you're willing to use T-Mo or Sprint (is Sprint still considered better than
VZN in California?).

VZN pricing is much closer to MNVO pricing than it used to be, especially for
heavy or unlimited users. You can get a better plan from VZN for $30 now than
my niece used to pay $60 for (but they gave her a new phone every 24 months
when she was paying $60).

Re: [MBZ] Cell phones, long post

2019-12-20 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I have spent quite a few times comparing cell coverage maps. Vz isn’t best
overall but T mobile came in a close 2nd. I may give them a try and if they
don’t work where I need it I will move to VZ. I may check out CC.

I agree with that assessment 5-10 yrs ago, but I think it is dated
now.   Kleb needs to look at the current coverage maps for vz and att,
and the piggyback carriers mentioned that WILL save him a ton of money
and enable buying a few more MBb per year.   The one with the best
coverage for the places he goes wins!...

I was shocked to find that ATT has better coverage in the places I spend
most of my time than vz.  and also very surprised that the CC coverage
is also BETTER than vz.
Att has been putting up more towers while Vz has been happy with what
they had 5 yrs ago and raping their shrinking customer base.

If Kleb can get coverage for where he goes with CC or one of the other
piggyback carriers mentioned, he will save big money.

Here’s the straight poop from someone who was involved heavily in the
buildout of both AT&T and Verizon’s cellular networks:

Both carriers have the highest number of cells nationwide of any
carrier that is a primary, with Verizon having the most. All the
others, save Sprint, are piggybacking on one of the big guys. The
piggyback contracts have limitations on the number of cells available
and the coverage areas.

Go with Verizon. They are the best as far as coverage between the two.
They’ll rape you on their plans, but that’s the price you pay for
accessibility. I’ve used them continuously since the early 1990s and
never had a coverage or bandwidth issue. The few times I had poor
signals in a fixed area I frequented, I called them and reported it
and found the issue resolved within a few days. They can tune their
coverage and will do so if they get enough tickets reporting it.

Re: [MBZ] Cell phones, long post

2019-12-20 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
When I was  on the road in the boonies, I had to have verizon, who
delighted in ripping me for $200 to $300+ a month  (30¢ to 60¢ a min,
unless someone from Canada called me when it was dollars per min)

CC has highly rated customer service (WAY better than Vz was) with
people in the USA for whom Merkun English is the FIRST language (imagine
that!) and has coverage anywhere ATT has service.   For the places I go
now (Often still in the boonies) and nearly border to border, and
Appalachia to west coast, the coverage is even better than vz.  within a
few weeks it will be cost to coast to coast and border to border.   I
expect no problems between the Appalachians to the east coast.

I continually had dropped calls and no service with Vz, and it is very
rate with CC.    Even their spokesman dumped verizon.

I started with GTE, who had good service and competitive rates, and
ended up with vz when they gobbled up GTE, and outrageously high
rates.   I was never happier than when I kissed Vz goodbye forever.

IMHO, if you travel significantly you should stick with AT&T or Verizon.
We tried
T-Mobile, and almost from the first day it was unusable. Dropped calls
when

crossing towers, random slowness due to 'foreign' towers, and the vaunted
fallback
to AT&T only happens when/where AT&T allows this, which is not everywhere.
(It's on a tower-by-tower basis, not a global policy.)

Basically my phone was only AT&T at home, which does NOT have the same
speeds and quantities that T-Mobile was advertising. And there was no
service
at my brother's, or the beach cabin, in spite of the coverage maps.

Bah.

The AT&T rep said that the alternate carriers are good, when you are
in the

towns
they support, but as soon as you go any distance from there things fall
apart. For
actual coverage, only the big two have that.

I would add Republic to that list. Especially if good Wi-Fi available
where you spend the most time.
