There has been controversy recently about what to call the virus that has
unleashed a worldwide pandemic. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) prefers
“novel coronavirus.” Others have referred to it as the “Wuhan virus,”
after its place of origin, as is common in naming diseases.

The Epoch Times suggests a more accurate name is the “CCP virus,” and
calls upon others to join us in adopting this name.

The name holds the CCP accountable for its wanton disregard of human life
and consequent spawning of a pandemic that has put untold numbers in
countries around the world at risk, while creating widespread fear and
devastating the economies of nations trying to cope with this disease.

Re: [MBZ] Kitchen cabinets

2020-03-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Lots of variables. You can go online and look at what some of the OTA and
assembled cabinets cost to get an idea. My old kitchen was pretty basic, a
short “L” with wall cabinets on the short side of the “L”, base cabinets under
the whole thing and a long wall opposite with the oven and microwave in the
middle and equally spaced cabinets on either side, both wall and base. That was
about $10k out the door at Lowes with good quality Kitchen Maid, I think.

Not installed, either.

If you go with the OTA online ones, those are the ones that you assemble,
you’re probably looking at the same thing for around or slightly under $5k. A
lot depends on the cabinet style and finish, too.

Spend an hour and measure, then go online to any one of the bajillion kitchen
cabinet sellers online and spec it out.

Re: [MBZ] Parasitic Draw

2020-03-28 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
The test lamp as shown is excellent on older gear, but the computer-controlled
stuff is trickier. Also, even a 20mA parasitic draw is enough to cause
problems,
but not really enough to make light. My favorite technique remains to loosen
the
ground clamp, stab the center of the post with one ammeter probe, and then pinch
the other probe against the clamp while lifting the clamp up over the probe.
Briefly,
just long enough to take a reading, then push the clamp back onto the post.
Repeat
as required.

That way power is never interrupted, and so no surge exists to damage
the ammeter's fuse or throw off the readings. (My Fluke's fuse is something
like $10. Each.) And, the surge-ing electronics never has a voltage drop
during
its startup, which could confuse it and cause spurious problems. Or even,
more permanent problems.

If you have one of those inline battery knife switches, you can put it in
place and wire up the ammeter more solidly. Then just open the
switch to take a reading, then close the switch. Easy, quick, safe,
and reliable. That's what we did back in school.

Once the time has passed, have a helper watch the ammeter and while doing so,

it does, you’ll have identified the circuit and potentially the device or

Harbor Fright has a fancy ammeter with a blade fuse plug on it that you can use

That can be solved by disconnecting the ground lead, connecting the test
lamp, shorting the test lamp for the 30 minutes Dan suggested, and then
unshorting the test lamp.

Re: [MBZ] OT - COVID 19 Stuff/Non-political

Thanks, Karl.

He self isolates pretty well, so that’s not an issue. He didn’t present with
any respiratory issues. If he has what the wife brought home, it’s not so much
diarrhea as things are just really loose. That’s why I was saying I was
surprised that all of the known stuff I threw at it seemed to have little to no
effect. It’s just gradually gotten more normal over a week’s time.

We’ll keep a close eye, for sure. Again, thank you!

Re: [MBZ] Max's COVID-19 vs H1N1 update

2020-03-28 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Yeah. Flu is no joke either. But its rate of hospitalizing people does not
compare. The main difference is that many people are already immune to
h1n1, so they dont all show up to the ER at the same time, also because
h1n1 is less contagious. And covid 19 hospitalizes 20% of the people it
infects, roughly, which flu does not do. So it is spreading fast into to a
population with no herd immunity, and making a bunch of them pretty sick.

See my reply to Dan for a link to the estimated ICU bed shortage state by
state, estimated deaths etc. They project 81k deaths for the country as a
whole IIRC for this epidemic over a few months. But NY is short thousands
of ICU beds and hospital beds, because it hits faster there, whereas
CLifonia put distancing in place earlier, so it peaks more slowly and we
remain within our bed capacity mostly. It will still be ugly here and we
still dont have n95 masks for ourselves or our residents dealing with these
patients. (The critical care people doing all the intubations get first
dibs on the n95s). But NYC is in for a truly terrible couple of weeks
coming up. Just terrible. Models are just estimates but it looks like they
are already piling up bodies in refrigerated containers outside the
hospital.

Re: [MBZ] Parasitic Draw

2020-03-28 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
This is all good info EXCEPT: These new cars always draw a tiny current to
keep the computers alive. But more than that, when power is first connected
(after being disconnected) the computers run through some kind of power-on
diagnostics that consume significant (less than an amp) current. You need
to wait until the computers go back to sleep to see if there is really a
parasitic current drain.

Put a test light in series with the ground lead of the battery as shown in
the attached picture. Then start pulling fuses until the light goes out.

You can see what connects to each fuse from the car's schematic and start
eliminating each item which might cause the drain.

That's the tough part of this thing - variable presentation. Many people

Re: [MBZ] ANY OFFER OVER 12K IS REASONABLE

2020-03-28 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
How old is she? Our 15 y.o. neutered male has lost his rear leg support
and can't make it to his litter box w/o assistance. Otherwise, his heart
is healthy and all blood tests are within norms. We're taking him to a
neuro who will in all likelihood tell us he needs an MRI to make an
accurate diagnosis.

Mine is probably going in to get nucleated (radioiodine treatment) in a couple
of weeks to fix her hypothyroidism. We have to collect her litter and hold it
for 60 days afterwards before disposing of it, or it could trigger the nuke
alarms in the trash system.

At least she’ll be able to see well in the dark for a while.

New fluid can help, too. Additives that make the seals swell and/or remain
pliable were probably long gone from the fluid that was in it.

Pinion seals aren’t hard to do, it’s more of a PITA to drop the drive shaft to
get to them.

Too bad about the cracked console wood. Otherwise, nice interior. We used
to call the exterior color nickel green.

I suspect this car will get close to but not exceed $10K when the auction
ends.

Re: [MBZ] Parasitic Draw

2020-03-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Jerry,

The ideal way to do a parasitic draw test is with an ammeter in line between
the negative battery post and the negative battery cable.

Hook everything up, roll the windows down, open the hood and let the car sit
for maybe 15-30 minutes, as some electronic systems won’t “sleep” right away.
Once the time has passed, have a helper watch the ammeter and while doing so,
remove fuses in the fusebox one at a time to see if the current changes. When
it does, you’ll have identified the circuit and potentially the device or
system that’s causing the draw.

Harbor Fright has a fancy ammeter with a blade fuse plug on it that you can use
as well, which eliminates the need to put an ammeter inline at the battery.
That is, if you have a car that uses blade fuses. Your 2005 Honda most likely
does.

[MBZ] Parasitic Draw

2020-03-28 Thread Jerry Herrman via Mercedes
Is a parasitic draw test a procedure that can be applied to any car? Today
I discovered that the 2005 Honda Odyssey, which had been parked unused for
the last three weeks or so, has a totally dead one year old Bosch battery.
It took a charge so I left it on the charger for a few hours. It works now.
The only "parasitic draw test" I know is disconnecting the negative cable
and then touching that negative cable to the battery post, checking to see
if there is a spark. There was a tiny spark, indicating that electricity is
being drawn from something. What should I know about parasitic draw at this
point in order to proceed?

Wow. The BaT folks really need to use an AP style book or something.

Re: [MBZ] A new type of fire extinguisher

2020-03-28 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
No, it's potassium ions and such that bind to the oxygen in the area of the
fire. I still don't understand how it can do that and still be no problem
to breathe. Like a flair, you can't turn it off once you start it, unlike a
traditional fire extinguisher, which is why (besides the price) I won't be
getting one.

[MBZ] Max's COVID-19 vs H1N1 update

2020-03-28 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Time for another update.

Then and now:

H1N1: From 12 April 2009 to 10 April 2010, a study estimated that
approximately 60.8 million cases (range: 43.3-89.3 million), 274,304
hospitalizations (195,086-402,719), and 12,469 deaths (8868-18,306)
occurred in the United States due to pH1N1.

COVID-19 As of today, 28 March: ~106,000 cases, ~1700 deaths.

Plain Old Flu as killed ~22,000 Americans this season, estimated to top out
around 30,000.

Try to keep perspective folks!

Agreed. However, if you’ve ever dealt with the aftermath of a dry powder

Looks like it takes at least one more step to activate than a traditional
fire extinguisher.

Also takes 2 seconds after completing the activation process before the
extinguisher is ready to go.

Lastly, in the video, the "fireman" had to get REALLY close to the fire to
put it out.

Although it is intriguing, I think I'll keep my traditional extinguishers.

2020-03-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This hit really close to home:

Youngest boy comes home from work last night, looking a bit peaked and feeling
poorly, said he had a fever. Hmm. Not good. Checks his temperature, sure
enough, he’s got a mild fever. Says his gut has been a mess as the day went on,
with his lower GI going berserk.

Mom was kind enough to bring something like this into the house recently, which
I’ve been dealing with as well. No fever, but definitely tearing up the lower
GI. Nothing, I mean nothing, has affected the symptoms. Yogurt, cheese,
anything that would normally slow or stop things up has absolutely no effect.

So anyway, once we hear the symptoms we breathe a sigh of relief and send him
off to his room.

About an hour later, he comes out to me at the computer and he’s all worked up.
Seems that he shared his concerns about his symptoms/health with a coworker
that day. The coworker, a poorly educated rural Bubba type, goes home and tells
his equally clueless wife. She has a major meltdown and calls a County
commissioner, at home, and rants about the employees spreading CV19 all over
the place and the County doing nothing to prevent it.

So now youngest son is like the chicken that got caught in the tractor’s nuts,
to quote Slim Pickens.

I tell him to not worry, he’s not going to lose his job, and that with everyone
on edge this is just one of what will probably be many meltdowns that will
occur over the next few weeks. Hardly calming, but at this point there’s not a
lot he can do. He was planning on going to the doctor this morning to get
checked out anyway.

So he goes to the doctor this morning. Stomach bug, doc tells him. No cure, it
has to run it’s course. He gets a “get out of jail free” statement from the doc
and sends it to his supervisor so he can return to work tomorrow.

Crisis averted. Oy.

I agree and its why I had to quit listening to Terry Gross which is too bad,
at one point I considered her one of the best interviewers around. Since Trump
got elected she can't help but weave him into every conversation. Also now all
her guests are people I either don't care about or can't stand.
Instead I've moved on to "The Art of Manliness Podcast". Brett has an
interesting cross section of people and asks good questions. Generally speaking

My mother-in-law is lactose intolerant while also having gut issues that would
be helped by eating yogurt so I've been working my way through the non-lactose
yogurts at the co-op to test them out.
So far the clear winner is cashew. Most of the yogurts are super sweet and
non-lactose ones are even worse. The cashew isn't as sweet and has just a hint
of nutty taste underneath, a real winner.
The biggest loser so far has be almond, way too sweet and a strange chemical
flavor I can't explain, disgusting.

[MBZ] W123 Diesel Engine Workshop Manual

2020-03-28 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
While changing out the engine on the 240D I plan on replacing some components
and adjusting, refurbishing and cleaning others. I have the Haynes manual
which is helpful but doesn’t cover many areas. What manual is recommended for
working on the W123 diesel cars. Does anyone have one they would like sell?
Thanks,

I was talking about the “competing with Rolls Royce” claim. The W126 was never
intended to compete with Rolls Royce. However, the W140 was intended to compete
with both RR and Bentley.
