Never found one of those I cared for, at least one that did a decent job. I’ve

[MBZ] Pergo

2020-09-05 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I have spent 2 days trying to lay this pergo crap. First row went in fine but
2nd and 3rd row did not want to lock in properly. You knock one side in and the
other side would pop loose. I ripped it all back up and came to the conclusion
I must have some high spots causing it. Ended up sanding down the joints
between subfloor pieces that seemed to be creating high spots. Filled in some
low spots with leveling compound. Have to wait for it to dry and hopefully
tomorrow it goes it easier. Last time I put this stuff in it went pretty
easily.

Re: [MBZ] Pergo

2020-09-05 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Last time I installed pergo (didn't actually do it myself) it was not
snap lock but tongue and groove that had to be glued.

I have installed the snap lock stuff in other brands. If you don't have
one, there is a little tool, a plastic block block with a ridge on it
that can help with hammering/tapping the pieces together without
damaging them. Should be available at Lowes, etc. in the flooring dept.

Level floor is important also, so not effort wasted if you had high and
low spots.

Are you using an underlayment?

Re: [MBZ] Pergo or Paint?

2020-09-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’d rather do floors than paint, which is what I”m doing today to avoid going
outside.

Our back (pool) bath was used by the PO’s daughter when she was a teenager.
It’s pained (badly) in some weird “seafoam” color with (get ready) glitter
glued on the walls using a stencil. That is, think about putting a stenciled
design about 8” x 8” randomly all over the walls. With the stencing taped to
the wall, you wipe white glue and over it and then toss a handful of glitter at
it, then lift the stencil off and let things dry. At least that’s how I think
they did what’s there.

We probably spent a couple hours using drywall compound sanding sheets, the
open weave sort of stuff, to level off the drywall and get as much of the glue
off the walls without damaging the drywall. Then I went over every one of them
with a couple of coats of Kilz, then hit each with spray texture to match the
original texture. I will say that the cans of spray texture, while not cheap,
do a heck of a job blending things once you get the hang of it.

So now I’m having to paint the walls. Finally. The last room of the house
(besides the kitchen) that needed paint.

Beats going outside, though.

If it has SBC you’ve got to go to the dealer and have it reset. Not sure if a
2004 has SBC, though. It’s also quite dangerous to work on brakes on a car
equipped with SBC if you don’t disconnect the system or disable it using SDS.

2020-09-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Bob,

You most likely didn’t hurt anything. However, SBC systems can activate without
warning, and quite forcefully, which is why you never want to work on a car
with SBC without disconnecting the SBC unit. They can cause pretty serious
injury if it goes off while you’re working on the brakes.

Re: [MBZ] New S-class. Looks like a Hyundai

2020-09-05 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
One of the main things I like about the classic (123/124/126 pre 90s) models is
they avoided unnecessary complication. For example, the passenger-side mirror
was electric but not the driver side because you can reach to adjust it
manually. They are maintainable and also indefinitely repairable (if parts
available) unless they rust out.

Take a look at the latest issue from Harbor Freight.
It has a pressure control feature that lets you "turn down the pressure"
for finer work. They also stock and sell 3 nozzles to adjust the spray for
different types of paint or stain... all the way from thick outside paint
to fine cut for something like varnish or stain..

I haven't used one from Harbor Freight yet [holding off buying one by
waiting for their next sale, yes, I'm cheap.] However I have used another
sprayer extensively with the pressure control feature... whow.. what a
great thing... that lets me cut in and control where and how much paint I'm
putting on very nicely.

With an airless sprayer, cleanup and storage is very important... If you
are using latex paint, use a bucket of clean water, drop the pickup tube in
and run the sprayer till it blows clean water out the nozzle.. then, ALWAYS
use the magic stuff [all the paint stores have it] that you run through the
pump, hose, and spray nozzle, that keeps all the parts from having
corrosion while not being used... then... Bobs Yer Unkle.

I'm totally sold on airless sprayers.. took a bit to master how to use one
well.. once that learning curve was passed... I'm spoiled Interior or
exterior... done before I would have messed with rollers, or brushes, or
sponges.

First time I used a rental store airless sprayer to prime new drywall, I
seemingly instantly put about a gallon of paint into about 10 square
feet. Globbed up and started running down the wall. Lesson learned, the
gun/nozzle must be moving *before* you pull the trigger, and it sprays a
LOT faster than you expect.

[MBZ] FLAPS alternator options (non-MB)

2020-09-05 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Oldest boy's Focus needs an alternator.

Autozone has three options: Duralast new for $201, Duralast reman for
$151, Valucraft reman $101.

First two have a lifetime warranty, the latter has a one-year warranty.

"Difficult installation" is noted. I have reviewed several YouTube
videos, it seems like a tight fit but otherwise not terrible.

The car is on its last legs mostly due to rust. Every time something
else goes wrong I debate just driving it to the scrapper. However it's
paid for, insurance is cheap, and it still starts and runs very well.

What say you all?

Re: [MBZ] Chewed up trip

2020-09-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
That’s a bulk sprayer, like you would use for large area interior/exterior
spraying. I’ve used them for both, and they’re a must-have. When we built our
house in Wisconsin I sprayed the whole interior of a 3,000 SF house in about
six hours, if that. Did my mother in-law’s house exterior in about three hours
(800 SF single story block house) after spending the previous day prepping and
masking.

I think what’s being discussed here is one of the smaller sprayers that you
might use for small interior areas or maybe spraying doors, for example.

I had one of the name brand (Wagner?) ones about 10-12 years ago that literally
“flung” the paint and wasn’t happy with it. Maybe they’ve gotten better since
then.

Agree on the styling but I'd certainly expect better build quality for

The time between looks good, and runny, is far less than the time it takes
to think "oh crap!"
Airless sprayers (not the handheld units) are the real deal.

If you need to, pick up a can at the recycling center, or the clearance
corner, and practice
spraying it onto scrap wood.

I'm at the point in the removal of the alternator where the instructions

mildly. Cannot get it out of the bracket because it hits the intake
manifold. Curse these engineers who don't make standard maintenance

[MBZ] OT dog pee

2020-09-05 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
So this office that used to be the back porch that was apparently used as a dog
kennel has constantly smelled so bad you couldn’t stand to be in there. The
house side is being and the outside is Sheetrock. So far we have used that
enzyme stuff, citrus cleaner, bleach, pine sol, ran ozone machine still just as
bad. We then kilzed the walls and repainted them, kilzed the concrete floor,
scrubbed the crap out of the being. Lower half of being is dark from the dogs
peeing on it. They chewed up most of the trim so today we removed it. Oh my
gosh holy hell it stunk. Behind the trim was just soaked in dog pee. We went to
pull the trim from the Sheetrock side and we could put no pressure at all on
the Sheetrock to pry it off. Would just sink it with no effort at all. Finally
got it off and the bottom foot or so of the Sheetrock is just crumbling from
all the dog piss. Now we are going to have to cut it out, replace, re texture
the wall then probably paint it again. Holy hell. Everytime we are there we
fine something else they screwed up.

At least my Saturn's alternator sits in front, above the compressor, and
lifts right out after you remove the airbox and tubing. But I accidentally
knocked the belt off the crank pulley and after much time wasted trying to
guide it back on, I ended up taking apart the fender liner, then the belt
went right back on the pulleys when I had decent access to the crank
pulley.

Unbolt the motor mount and shift the engine over.

We are way too far down the rabbit hole for that. We are sitting at about $6k
in materials so far. We need to get a fence guy out to quote repairing the wood
privacy fence their dogs destroyed. Need to get a window guy out to quote
replacing nearly every screen in the house. Some screens are just tore up or
missing and can easily has the screen replaced. Others the frames are
completely missing for some reason.

I should check my coverage with USAA. It is specific rental property coverage
and I know it covers loss of rent during claims, I wonder if it covers damage
caused by renters.

I've considered it, the motor mount bolts are easily accessible, but I
don't think that will help in this case because everything that's
causing my problem will move with the engine. But I might try it, if
nothing else I might get a better angle to grab onto the thing.

I was working on a 2005 Focus with the 2.? Eco something engine. The alternator
was wedged between the engine and the firewall. I had to unbolt the motor mount
and pry the engine over to get it out. Might have had to remove some other
stuff in the too. It was a while ago. I've given up trying to leave things in
place and "work around it". If it's in the way, it's outta here.

Yep that's similar. This is a 2003 with 2.0l Zetec.

Already removed/relocated coolant reservoir, PS fluid reservoir, and
misc wiring and hoses. In the video I watched, that was enough, so I'm
guessing that I just haven't hit upon the exact angle that will get it
to clear the bracket.

I'll be trying to watch some other videos tonight. Apparently others
have had success removing it from underneath, through the wheel well,
with wheel and liner removed.
