Yeah. He had to eliminate several lists a while back. I don't recall the
reason, but I think it had something to do with the hosting service.

Re: [MBZ] What to Do? Fix and Seel or Just sell as is?

2020-09-08 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
That’s such a lousy way to dispose of a vehicle or anything else for that
matter. Mitch will correct me if I’m wrong, but all a car donation does is
lower your AGI by that amount. So if you get $2000 for a deduction, you only
get the benefit (deduction) of the taxes you would pay on $2000. Pocket change
for the most part, maybe a few hundred dollars.

Sell it for $1,000 as-is and you’re ahead of the game with $1,000 cash in your
pocket.

2020-09-08 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes

Clay,

I can not even get it to open in manual mode. I looked at the opposite door
and there are two latches that lock in when driving. I also removed the
other doors inner panel to see how the mechanisms worked. The latches appear
to be jammed and will not release to open the door, which makes impossible
to fix the electric door drive cable!

May view would be to sell as is due to age and mileage. Nicely appointed,
but once you start mucking about with the door electronics, the likelihood
of greater damage incurred in replacing the failed wires would reduce sales
price. Could take a look at how the wires are routed from the opposing
door and maybe you find a way to put 12v so it can pop open for repair?
Did you check fuses. Dr. Booth admonished all to check and replace fuses,
which alleviated a plethora of issues.

we have used it for camping trips into the Smokes and to the East coast

I have spent the last several weeks cleaning it up, inside and out and
during this time frame the passenger door power door cable decided to
break. No problem it has a manual mode, but when I closed the sliding door
the latches jammed and I can not get the door open. For some reason the
sliding door refuses to release and open.

My options are, sell as is, or fix the sliding door than sell.

A complete door from a pick-n-pull is about $75, if I wanted to take the
time and destroy the current door to get it open. Or I could try and start
pulling interior panel and seeing if I can get the door open. Just not
sure if it is worth it to try to fix before selling it?

Just trying to put it out there on which way to go.

I am retired, so I can take whatever time is needed.

Thank you, sorry it not a Mercedes question.

It has two sliding doors?
You only need one, but there's a big difference between 17 years old,
everything works, and I'm selling it because it's not worth fixing this
stupid door.

Sad that it picked now to fail. Or is it the door you never use and it
failed because you opened it after a long hiatus? If it's the door you
never use, that tilts the balance more towards 'forget it'.

I think you have to look at the fact that it's a 16 year old minivan
that's closing in on 300,000 miles.

In my opinion you've gotten the expected life out of this vehicle and
then some. Whatever you can sell it for now is gravy. How much would
you need to discount it to sell it as-is, and is that difference worth
your time and effort? My guess is that it's going to amount to no more
than couple of hundred dollars difference in the sales price.

Think about the potential buyers. Anyone interested in a vehicle of that
age and milege is not expecting perfection and will either be prepared
to fix problems themselves or live with them.

When the Frankenheap got popped in the rear and the trunk would no longer
unlock,
I went over to the 250C for some inspiration. I located the exact place to
drill through
the wall behind the license plate to allow releasing the latch. As the car was
grey, a
spot of duct tape was all the bodywork that was necessary to complete the
repair,
after the trunk wall had been pushed back into place (with the ubiquitous BFH)
so
that the mechanism worked properly again.

You're basically looking for the place where an icepick, judiciously applied,
will
do the most good. Not much of a hole.

For practical reasons, fewer people now experience a tax benefit from
donating a car to charity. Your itemized deductions need to exceed the
current standard deduction. Recent tax code significantly increased the
standard deduction enough that even with my modest retirement income and no
mortgage, I never come close to exceeding the standard deduction. The real
benefit of donating a car is your gesture of support for the charity.

My go to first aid for cuts on fingers is some stuff called "Liquid
Bandage".
As soon as you have the bleeding slowed down, you paint in on like nail
polish. It has blood stop and antibacterial as well as sealing up the
injury. Dries in a couple minutes. I always paint on a couple of coats for
added coverage.
It gives a flexible and secure patch over the injury that is waterproof. It
lasts for 3 to 4 days depending on how much you use your hand and how much
you scrub with soap and water. You can always add more layers over the
injury.

I like it a lot because, unlike bandaids, which always come off as you
work, it stays and protects.
Almost all the drug stores carry it, some under a house brand package, but
it's the same stuff. Also, not expensive.

I understand how you feel. I have a 2006 Sienna of very similar
description. It has been the family truck for the last 3 or 4 years. But
the right sliding door is jammed shut. I had it in for a rare dealer
service a few years ago and asked them to open that door. When I retrieved
the van, they told me they could not open that door. If I insisted on
proceeding, their next step would involve destroying the interior bits of
the door to dig into it. We've used it for a long time now without being
able to open that door.

I have wondered, but never followed up on whether the liquid bandages are
non-allergenic or not. I have become very sensitive to either latex or the
adhesive in typical bandages - they raise guey welts on my skin, no fun.
The non-allergenic bandages are oftentimes hard to find and the choice of
sizes very limited. Liquid Bandages, if not toxic to me would be great, as
my wife always points out that I make a blood sacrifice to almost every

Re: [MBZ] PSA from Okie Acres Home Remodelers

I just got the big magnifying glass so I could read the ingredients label,
to answer your question.
I'm not a chemist, but to my pedestrian eye, it does not appear to use
latex.
Translated from 2 point type size: Ingredients
Bottle is 0.3 fl oz.
Acetone ... Amyl Acetate...Castor Oil Ethyl Acetate
...Nitrocellulose SD alcohol 40

Can be removed with nail polish remover. Covering lasts 3 to 7 days.. about.

Hope this helps... I don't own stock in the company that makes it... but
over the years, I have certainly used their product... it's part of every
med kit I have. That a spray bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide.. spray
application is a great way to clean a wound. Much better than trying to
wipe it clean with a sterile gauze or cotton ball soaked in Hydrogen
Peroxide... spray bottle lets you irrigate the wound area nicely.
Spray clean.
Blot bleeding.
Elevate wound.
Apply liquid bandage..
Get back to work...

I don’t think we’ve exceeded the standard deduction in a number of years
because of the increase. I used to work every angle, like saving sales receipt,
etc., but it just became a big waste of time.

The days of the “donate it to a church or your PBS station” stuff for cars
ended a long time ago. They still get the benefit of the donation, which is
good, but the taxpayer doesn’t get much at all. Nowadays they’ve got a real
racket with this, where a service comes and picks it up, gives you a receipt to
validate that you donated it, then it goes to auction and you get whatever the
proceeds are less their costs.

And then all you do is get that much to reduce your AGI. It’s almost always got
to be better to just sell it for scrap, worst case.

Back in the 1990s, somebody approached the Holt, Michigan (probably Delhi
Township) fire chief with a fundraising offer. They'd do all the work, he
just had to sign the contract and they'd cut the FD a check at the end of
the campaign. The contract was for 95% to the phone bank, 5% to the fire
department.

Then somebody demanded to know the info the phone bank was required to
divulge but didn't want to, and got it. They told the 'man about town'
reporter for the Lansing State Journal, he interviewed the chief "I had no
idea this would upset anybody, I'm sorry".

The chief just never stopped to think that if somebody worked hard, earned
$100, and gave it to the local FD, they wouldn't be happy to learn that
their bank balance went down by $100 but the FD only received $5.

While working on the cursed Focus alternator replacement (successful,
finally) I failed to notice a nest of yellow jackets in the ground
behind my work area. This is the time of year that they seem to be
really active/aggressive around here.

One of them nailed me in the wrist on Sunday afternoon. My left forearm
now looks like Popeye the Sailor's arm (OK not quite that bad but
definitely puffy, swollen, tight skin, some clear fluid weeping in
spots, from the mid-forearm down to my knuckles. Cannot make a fist with
that hand right now due to the swelling.

I react that way to yellow jackets. Not much to do about it but wait it
out. Bee stings, other wasps don't seem to have nearly that effect.

I dispatched the nest that evening with a big load of insecticide spray,
after they had all returned for the night.

You want to race it in a production car class, you have to build 500 of

It has two sliding doors?
You only need one, but there's a big difference between 17 years old,
everything works, and I'm selling it because it's not worth fixing this
stupid door.

Sad that it picked now to fail. Or is it the door you never use and it
failed because you opened it after a long hiatus? If it's the door you
never use, that tilts the balance more towards 'forget it'.

Anyone repairing bobwire fences, before hammering a new staple into the

They do not like the vibrations caused by the hammering, and will announce

One of the positive aspects of the internet is that almost any problem
that is common to any car has been diagnosed and described somewhere.

For example

That's one of many possible search results. Have you reviewed/eliminated
these as relevant to your situation?

[MBZ] OT - Chain Saw Recommendations

2020-09-08 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
In an effort to become better prepared should a large storm/hurricane pass
through, I am considering purchasing a chain saw.

Since it would be something I would rarely use, I’m not looking to buy a large
professional grade Husqvarna or something like that necessarily. However, I
would like a good quality saw, not a HF sort of machine.

Suggestions?

Exactly.  Saw it in Houston, see it around here.  They can keep them
running, use them for their painting or landscaping businesses, they
just need something that runs and works and is cheap.  Vans seem

Re: [MBZ] OT - Chain Saw Recommendations

2020-09-08 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

For occasional (under 25hours/10 years) use a Poulan Wild Thing was
actually a decent choice. Effectively a Husky clamshell body saw with a
cheap cylinder and chromed piston. 25-50 hr motor instead of 1000-2000
hour motor. I think my dad paid $125 for his. Just checked, discontinued.

Poulan Pro would be closer in quality to a homeowner Husky, Amazon has for
$170 42cc or $200 50cc.

Echo was always Stihl like durability with lower power and higher weight,
but they started getting the performance up about ten years ago. Don't
know if they still have the 5 year consumer warranty.

Redmax/Zenoah used to have some nice little pro saws. I believe
Electrolux/Husky bought them, so lines may have merged by now, like
Husky/Jonsered. I've got a Ryobi that's the made in Japan Zenoah engine in
Chinese plastic. Was great until the ignition switch broke, then a couple
tank of fuel later the recoil starter broke (possibly from hard starting
caused by using the choke to shut it off). I have two more Ryobis sitting
new in box, and come to think of it I have at least two brand new John
Deere (Italian Efco in green bodies) in the garage at the lake. The 60cc
Deere was nearly the equivalent of the Stihl MS361 of its day.

If Home Depot still rents Makitas made in Germany, those are blue pro
grade Dolmars, try to snag a used rental cheap.

Unfortunately my knowledge isn't all that current, witness the fact that I
didn't know until just now that the Wild Thing was gone.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Chain Saw Recommendations

2020-09-08 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Oh, and I bought this electric pole saw at HF a coupla weeks ago for
$60.  Extends to like 10ft or so so you can reach some branches.  It's
mostly plastic but I have been (ab)using it a bit lately and I am quite
impressed by it.  Maybe 9"? bar, will do some sizable branches.  I have
one of those tailgator generators that is sufficient to power it, I put
that in the back of the truck with a 100ft extension cord and can go
around the vast estate and cut lots of low branches and trash trees that
sprout up.

If you don't have a lot of big trees you might have to deal with, an
electric chain saw and generator (which you said you installed?) would
probably work pretty well, HF have some that aren't too bad.  I have an
old Sears electric chainsaw with maybe a 16" bar that I have had
forever, it works pretty well for anything up to maybe 6" or 8" but
doesn't have enough power to do much bigger.  There are even Li
battery-powered saws now that I suppose would be OK for random fallen
stuff but probably nothing too big.

How will you get insurance on an out-of-state registration?  I think my

Battery pole saws are cool.

Gassless handheld chainsaws, electric or battery, are mostly cool, BUT:
They're hard to blade brake quickly during a kickback emergency, and
kevlar safety chaps don't stop them as fast as something with a clutch
either.

If you are 100% sure you can keep your body parts off the chain, the low
speed torque of an electric motor is an advantage. If you make a wrong
move, electrics will punish you for it.

If you have a SC plate without the insurance company putting your SC
insurance in the SC database, SC DMV gets upset. Michigan too.
Winter of 2019 I got a bunch of letters demanding I have my insurance
company send them proof of coverage as of the day I bought my plates for
the year.

My agent faxed them the requested info, I got letters reinstating all but
one of my plates. I had my agent verify that plate, SoS worker faxed back
that all my plates were good, and then when my birthday came around I
didn't get a renewal notice for that car. Had to wait in line for two
hours to fix that one, totally of their own creation. The Saturn not only
had a false revoked plate on it, I wasn't allowed to buy another plate
because the previous one was 'revoked' by a woman who later lied about it
being revoked.

Does DMV get upset if you're in the insurance part of the database without
a valid SC registration?

Im not really sure here. I may just put insurance on it and give it 30 days and
see what happens. Technically if you move here from out of state you are
supposed to transfer your registration to OK within 30 day. This is similar but
not quite the same as it’s registered to my address here but in Vermont. I just
hope the tag office does not try to give me any crap when I go to get the OK
title. I’m not sure if I’m keeping it or flipping. If flipping I will have to
go ahead and get the title.

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** RE: OT - Chain Saw Recommendations

2020-09-08 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Early Sunday morning my next door neighbor had someone cutting down a big tree
right next to his house. I thought it odd to start a project like that at 0800
Sunday, but I'm an early riser so no big deal. As I watched the weather report
yesterday evening, and watched the standing snags on the county property behind
my house swaying crazily in the wind, I wondered if my insurance coverage is
high enough!

I need to call my agent, as well as ask the county about those trees.

We have had a Crazy East wind event here in Western Oregon with nearly 30MPH
sustained winds with gusts to 60-70MPH! It was enough to topple a significant
section of the neighbor’s poplar tree sending it through the fence, across the
shared private driveway and nearly into another neighbor’s living room window!
He got his Stihl chain saw out and got right to work. That 20” saw was
awesome! It didn’t have any trouble, and restarted easily.

Re: [MBZ] Vermont

2020-09-08 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I think that’s Florida’s approach.

I’ve gotten their wrath on the back end when I’ve sold a car and it got titled
in another state or the insurer notified Florida the policy had ben canceled.
Under those circumstances they send you a nastygram and demand proof of the
sale and the tag returned or they suspend your license and ding you with a big
fine.

Hagerty seems to be quick on the trigger telling the state because both times I
canceled a policy with them the state was on my *ss in a matter of days. I
could have prevented the issue by turning in my tag, but I never do. In the
case of the 65 220SEb I had a 1965 Florida tag I had gotten registered for the
car, and I wasn’t about to give them that. I went to the DMV (in the same
building that I work in, local government and all that) and explained my
dilemma, and the nice DMV person suggested that I “lost” the tag. If I told the
state this they would leave me alone. And they did.

Yeah same thing here on 30days or so. I guess the DMV could spin it that you
live here and not there, so you must have your vehicles titled here too,
whether the title and plates are valid elsewhere or not. They’d probably say it
is no different from bringing an out of state car here from a previous
residence outside the state if you now live here as your principal residence,
whether you still have property in the other state.

30 days here as well, but the “fine” is some pittance, like $10. I wonder how
they would even know it if it wasn’t for having to present an executed title or
bill of sale. Or proof of insurance, as the start date would be a giveaway.

Hmm.

I don't really think it was an insurance issue.

I think the real problem was I plated pre 1983 cars (no property tax) and
transferred the plates to $87k Mercedes without paying the Mercedes
property tax. I forget what the S420 was supposed to cost, I think around
$350.
My sub-$40k ML is $176, which is annoying because I don't drive it 17x a
year, so they're getting over $10 every time I stick the key in the
ignition.

They fixed it this year, if you transfer a plate they make you pay the
difference if the tax is higher on the receiving car than the original
car.

Some rural/southern state was going after the guys with Ferraris and
Lambos registered to Montana LLCs with Montana plates but garaging the
cars in the complaining state. Some place like Alabama or Arkansas, I
would have expected NY or NJ to be going after something like that.

Flat fees in Florida, thank goodness. None of that goofy tax stuff based on
age, like Indiana had. That was such a screw unless you drove cars older than

I found all the regulations for tranfers and saw this. Looks like if you are
bringing in a vehicle with out of state title and it is listed in your name you
have to provide proof of residence in the other state. If you can’t then they
will charge penalty based on the registration date of out of state. In other
words I need to get it registered here ASAP. Is this how you interpret it?

b) Out-of-state or Indian tribal documentation reflecting Oklahoma address.
When an out- of-state or federally-recognized Indian tribal title or
registration is presented in application for an Oklahoma title by an owner
whose name(s) is (are) reflected on that document with an Oklahoma address,
proof of former residency in that other state, or membership in that tribe,
will be required No such proof will be required if the out-of-state or tribal
title has been assigned to another party. When required, if out-of-state
residency/tribal membership cannot be verified, delinquent registration fees
and penalties will be assessed, based on the issuance date of the out- of-state
or tribal documentation.
(1) Examples of out-of-state residency verification: Out-of-state driver
license; Voter registration card; Tax return (property or income); Utility
bills in the name of the vehicle owner.
(2) Examples of Indian Tribal membership verification: Identification card or
certificate of tribal membership issued by tribe; Bureau of Indian Affairs
(BIA) identification card; Letter from tribe verifying membership; Branded
membership statement on the tribal title, verifying tribal membership of the
listed owner(s).

Re: [MBZ] Vermont

2020-09-08 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Here it is $1 per day capped at $100 for registration. Same for title. So $200.
Then I believe there is another $1 per day if it’s out of state. So $300. Then
finally now they charge $1.25 per day for sales tax penalty with no cap. Last
time I checked it was going to cost over $600 to title and register this $600
ML because I never transferred the title from out of state. That’s why I went
the Vermont route. Now even if I’m not going to do anything with the car for a
while I still go ahead and title it with no insurance. They “black tag” them
where you get plate and title but can’t drive it until you put insurance on it
and get a regular registration sticker.

In Michigan there are 4 prices.
New, one year old, two years old, three or more years old.
Each step drops about 10% off the price.
So a 20 year old S class is about 2.5x as much as a brand new Cruze.

Any car that the annual plate is more than the 6% sales tax when I bought
it makes me look for loopholes in the annual fee due to perceived lack of
fairness.

I think it's blatant discrimination against those who don't support the
auto industry by buying new cars.

Yeah, I wrap some paper towel and put on a rubber glove to contain the blood

Re: [MBZ] OT - Chain Saw Recommendations

2020-09-08 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
When my fraidy-cat (would die whenever you showed the saw wood, but it would run
fine otherwise) saw that came with the house PO'd me one too many times I asked
my
brother what was a good saw. Stihl, he said, but it was expensive. I told him
I didn't care
what it cost, if it worked well when I needed it. And that's what I bought, an
036.

Still using it 25 years later.

As a side question, why does it seem that cars of this era look like the
engine compartment is full of spaghetti?

Did they just not care about routing hoses and wires neatly, or was it
that they didn't have the CAD tools to help fit everything into the
space?

Re: [MBZ] OT - Chain Saw Recommendations

2020-09-08 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Living in the Panhandle, I had to cut my way out to the road more than once.
Electric chain saws are great for occasional light use but not for hurricanes,
even if you have power and a fast charger.
A consumer gas saw (like Poulan Pro/Wild Thing) should be fine for emergency
hurricane use but completely drain fuel and run the carb dry before storing.
Also, get a chain file and learn how to touch up the chain. Just a few strokes
with the file can make a world of difference in cutting speed. A spare chain
is not a bad idea; you will likely need it eventually. You can store 2-cycle
oil a long time but the gas must be fresh. Almost all chain saw no-start and
hard-start problems are caused by stale fuel left in the saw. Carbs are
inexpensive and easy to replace but that won't help immediately after a
hurricane unless you pre-ordere a spare.
