Some heavy truck engines have provision for ether injection from a can
of liquid ether, so the technology and hardware (still) exist.

No, I had a disagreement with one of their franchisees. They refused to
do anything to even partially correct the situation or even own up to
any responsibility. Their attitude was not just indifferent but
hostile. The actual dollar ammount this cost me was not worth legal
action but because of how they handled it I did swear off buying their
gasoline and other products (prior to this I used to prefer them when I

Are you running Dino or synthetic 15w40?

In my 606 I was running the old Delo 5w40 LE(?) and it seemed like I had to top
the oil a coupe of times per oil change. The last couple of changes I switched
to Rotella T6 5w40 and right when it was due for a change the low oil message
would come on, so it was down a qt. Now Delo has a new formula that is
supposedly approved for gas and diesel. Not sure if I want to try Delo again or
try something else, or stick with Rotella.

I am not a fan of Shell either. It might not be any more but there was a
time when, if gas prices went up, it was always Shell that raised the
price first around here.

In addition, I had a 1977 Mercury that was not tolerant of the Shell
gasoline. It would ping if I ran Shell. It was fine if I ran Esso so, I
gave up on Shell.

I have been running Delo in my old 300D too.

Re: [MBZ] I am underwater Mercedes V12 Bi Turbo - $29,000

2020-10-05 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I was thinking it is  a small car but maybe I am wrong. It is a bit hard
to tell how big that car is from the photos. Does it have a back seat? I
think the guys who just did the run in the Audi had someone in the back
seat working the electronics etc (my recall from reading the article a
while back without checking again). How big is the trunk for an
additional fuel cell?

fuel tank while driving. One reason that the Mercedes high-end cars are
favored (other than safety, comfort, and high speed) is the self-leveling
suspension which can handle the increased weight of the fuel and not
compromise handling / braking too much.

Re: [MBZ] I am underwater Mercedes V12 Bi Turbo - $29,000

2020-10-05 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
There was a new Cannonball record set recently (by a big margin, the
covids had the roads fairly clear) by some guys who did it before in an
E63 (I think?) that was set up with extra tanks and ECM (electronic
counter measures) and all kinds of nav and comms gear.  They were going
to use the E63 again but it had been wrecked or something, so they took
an Audi that somebody had and swapped stuff over in a week or two then
headed out.  There is a utuber vid on it, pretty cool, I might have
posted it a few weeks ago.

It's hard to imagine that record will be beat anytime soon given they
were taking advantage of very light traffic, esp in the bigger cities
like NYC where they left from.

Fundamentally the fuel consumption is going to be determined by the power
required, which is determined by the air resistance of the vehicle at that
speed, assuming both cars have a reasonable final drive gear ratio. The
engine doesn't matter much.

Re: [MBZ] Getting a Cummins

2020-10-05 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Besides the Mercedes fleet I also own and operate 5 Ford F350 with the 7.3
diesel engine and one F 450, also 7.3 engine.
Rotella oil in those engines leaks and blows out... fresh oil change and
1,500 miles I lose a quart.. all the engines are in good shape, wear and
maintenance wise..
When I removed the Rotella oil and shifted to Castrol Diesel oil... each
engine immediately did not lose oil, or leak oil. Since then, I've tried
other diesel oils [all 15 / 40 wt] with no oil loss... as soon as I do a
shift back to Rotella... oil loss...

So.. Rotella is on my "don't like list".. for the trucks, and everything
else in the diesel fleet.

Re: [MBZ] I am underwater Mercedes V12 Bi Turbo - $29,000

2020-10-05 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Randy - good point, what's been done in the past is the "teams" that make
these runs will add extra fuel tanks to the trunk to increase range, and at
fuel stops they simultaneously fill all the tanks. I think they set up
electric transfer pumps to move fuel from the added tanks to the original
fuel tank while driving. One reason that the Mercedes high-end cars are
favored (other than safety, comfort, and high speed) is the self-leveling
suspension which can handle the increased weight of the fuel and not
compromise handling / braking too much.

It is a 6k car all day long out here if it has been maintained well.
Personally I would go with the m113k forced induction version though. That
motor is bulletproof and one of the few machines that could give a Tesla a
run for its money at the stoplight

Interestingly a friend with the slowest model X raced a vintage Mustang
hotrod at a light the other day. He said it was pretty even until the other
guy had to shift into second gear, at which point the mustang was no longer
a factor in the race.

I think the days of V8s in mid-size sedans are numbered. With emissions
regulations and fuel economy standards becoming more stringent as the years go
on, you’ll be seeing smaller and smaller displacement engines along with hybrid
systems becoming the norm in almost every car except the ultra-high performance
models. Look right now, the current Mercedes-Benz E-Class lineup lacks a V8
until you get to the top of the range E63 AMG, which starts at $110,000. Even
ten years ago, you could get your E500 with a 5.0 V8 and call it a day. Not
anymore, two 2.0L inline-fours and an 3.0L inline-six are what awaits your down
payment. Buyers don’t really care, as long as the car looks good and the lease
numbers and performance are good, sign ’em up.

So rewind 20 years and head back to the new Millennium where the E-Class lineup
was simple. There was the 3.2L V6 E320, 4.3L V8 E430, and 5.4L V8 E55 AMG.
Done. The buyers for E320s and E55s were very different people, as the E320 was
$47,000, while the E55 was a significant amount more at $72,000. Turns out its
not cheap to pay a bunch of Germans in a small town to hand-assemble a car. So
what about the E430? $53,000. Suddenly that extra six grand seems like a
worthwhile upgrade over the E320. You had more than respectable numbers at the
time with 275 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft of torque. Still, every time you saw an
E55, which lets be honest probably never because of the extremely low
production numbers, you wanted those 18″ Monoblocks and special body kit. Now
that is 20 years later, does it still make sense to buy an E430? I think so,
especially this one.

Just arrived! This 1 owner California car with clean carfax and extensive
history of dealer service. Super clean cosmetics and nice running example of
classic Mercedes build quality. AZ Euros has inspected, serviced and replaced
motor mount, ac compressor and full synthetic oil change and the E430 is ready
to hit the road.

Power memory seats, Elegance package, sunroof and two keys.

For 100,000 miles, this is a super clean example. Usually almost any W210 by
now has had a hard life and is maybe on its last legs, but thankfully not this
one. The seats looks great, and even the engine bay is spotless. Not a leaking
valve cover gasket to be found. Kind of funny that this car wasn’t optioned
with heated seats, but I guess you had to pay to play back then. The only real
flaw I see is the the missing badge on top of the shift knob, but that fixable
with a dab of glue.

For $6,000, this is a good buy all day. You have slightly lower running costs
than the big brother E55, while still having that torquey M119 V8. I think the
thing here is that you have to be satisfied with it just being an E430 and not
constantly reminding yourself it isn’t the E55. I know you won’t be touching a
similar condition E55 for this price now.

Re: [MBZ] Getting a Cummins

2020-10-05 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'm not a fan of 15w40 but then I live where it gets cold. I'm reasonably sure
the ASV has 15w40 conventional and it cranks slow in the cold and really
requires the block heater. That oil only has maybe 100 hours on it but its 5
years old now, I'm thinking of changing it with synthetic. John Deere (its a JD
engine) recommends 10w40 or 0w40.

My 2015 VW Jetta TDI REQUIRES 10w30 which I find difficult to swallow after
years of MB diesels. Otherwise I'd run 5w40 in everything except the pickup
which wants 5w20.
