Jaime might have an update, but the last time I asked it was hit or miss. My

If you're going to work on cars too, get one that can measure

Made a trip to town to the local farm store, they of course were out of them.
Drove to the nearest Lowe’s 30 minutes away and of course they were out as
well. A different Lowe’s had them but I guess I will go there tomorrow.

Its tough when ice hits a place that doesn't normally have it. People aren't
prepared, nobody has snow tires, the municipality doesn't have equipment,
people aren't smart enough to stay home...
Actually that last point is so often overlooked "I need 4 wheel drive, I have
to go out!" No, no you don't. Muffins the cat will do just fine if you don't
buy more tuna until tomorrow...

Re: [MBZ] OT heat pump aux heat

2021-02-11 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I had a wood stove I put in our old Victorian in Melrose. I put it in a corner
in the kitchen in the back of the house and used the old cook stove chimney. It
was a cheap knockoff if a Vermont Castings stove i got at the building
materials surplus store for like $150.

There was a back stairway and I had fans to blow heat up there so i could
pretty much keep the upstairs warm that way. I’d stoke it before bed and it
would burn most of the night. In The evenings we spent the time in the kitchen
then upstairs so I could set the downstairs zone at 60F or so and that was
fine.

The house had forced hot water oil heat, I had put in a new boiler so that
helped efficiency some but the house had minimal insulation, mostly old
windows, and was big. I scrounged firewood from all over, the City guys would
drop off wood from trees they cut down, so I always had plentiful oak and maple
which of course I had to split but that was good exercise.

My last winter there the oil bill was $500, the realtor couldn’t believe it.
Oil was NOT cheap at the time so I thought that was quite good. I liked the
wood heat too, warmed the bones.

Re: [MBZ] Made it back with the CD

2021-02-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Was talking about the new farm with my class today and noticed that for the
next two nights its going to be colder here than 450 miles north. Single digits
either way but a degree or two warmer in Caribou than Winchendon.
They've got way more snow than us though.
We visited my folks in southern Maine last weekend. Driving home Sunday we got
caught in a storm as we drove rt 101 across New Hampshire. The Jetta did fine
but as we made the pass between Mt Pack Monadnock and Temple Mountain there was
a car ahead of us that was just all over the road. We never saw them but you
could see the tracks sliding across two lanes. Fortunately there is a climbing
lane so they never went on the other side of the road.
The Jetta doesn't have snow tires, if I'd known it was going to snow we'd have
taken the pickup. We went to a Stupor Bowl party that evening and used the
truck, it handled the snow no issues but its got snow tires...

Re: [MBZ] OT heat pump aux heat

2021-02-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
 I have this one:
https://www.harborfreight.com/cm610a-600a-t-rms-acdc-clamp-meter-64015.htmlWicked
handy, a million household uses. I bought it specifically to troubleshoot the
glowplug on the ASV. It proved that it at least draws current. It also helped
me find a bad connection in the solar array at camp. Its a good multimeter too.

I saw a review on YouTube compare to a similar Fluke. Had slower
response time and build quality was not as robust, but was just as
accurate and thought to be a good deal for the casual user.

Re: [MBZ] OT heat pump aux heat

2021-02-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
A fireplace is about the least efficient device imaginable, most of the heat
of the fire shoots up the chimney. A small insert stove would dramatically
increase the heat output. It'd be cleaner too since it would have a door that
would be closed.
Wood is still a messy way to heat. I've had our wood stove lit pretty much
every day this year. We've gone through probably twice as much wood as normal
but its just because I've been home. At the same time we've burned maybe half
as much oil as normal.
It gives me something to do and makes the basement a nice place to sit with a
wobble pop and read.

[MBZ] Are ML keys still available?

2021-02-11 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Seems I have heard they are not. The ML was supposed to be going out to Texas
and it ended up not happening so I unloaded it before leaving Saturday. I
remember that did not take the key back into the house and I seem to recall
having having it with me. I can’t remember if I had it in my pocket or put it
in my bag. Long story short now I can’t find it. I am hoping it didn’t fall out
of my bag at one or the hotels I was out, fall out of the truck somewhere at
one of the stops made, or fell out of my pocket. I am just not finding it
anywhere. This could be a huge problem if they are not available anymore.

I wonder if you could rig up bluetooth to make the car phone work as an access
point for your cell. It'd be pretty cool to have the car phone working.
On the same vein it'd be cool if my old rotary phone could do the same. Have it
ring and everything. Way more ergonomic to talk on if one doesn't mind being
tethered.

Re: [MBZ] OT heat pump aux heat

2021-02-11 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Think I should just replace it or swap positions first? I am afraid if it is
the breaker and I go thru the hassle of moving it now the problem will be with
the outside unit or something. There are 3 60 amp breakers and all involve the
heat pump. One is aux heat, one is outside unit and one is inside unit. I think
I will just head to town and get one real quick.

Re: [MBZ] OT heat pump aux heat

2021-02-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The heat strips are fine, it’s more an issue of a heat pump not producing the
“hot” air people are often accustomed to with gas forced air. They’re not
terribly efficient, either, but that’s the drawback of having a heat pump.

I found it sort of weird with our Indiana house as it has a conventional gas
furnace, so the air that comes out the vents is HOT! That’s after living in
houses with heat pumps for years.

2021-02-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Absolutely. But they’re pretty robust cars. I know of two people who have run
Centurys over 300k - one of them is across the street from me right now. I
can’t speak to the latest ones like a 2014 or later, but the 90s and 2000
models have held up well.

The mom in law’s 2015 LaCrosse is a very nice car. Sort of a brick, very heavy
and solid feeling. The research I’ve done has only come up with one issue that
is concerning, but it it’s not one that has a significant frequency - the power
steering is electrically driven and there have been failures.

I’m toying with the idea. Haven’t decided whether I’ll go that route for her or
not.

Re: [MBZ] OT heat pump aux heat

2021-02-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I would suspect the breaker before I would suspect the heat strips. Heat strips
don’t short typically, they fail open. Got a clamp on ammeter you can use to
check the current draw when they’re on? Then you would know for sure.

Might want to give the air handler a look to make sure there’s nothing amiss,
like something across the heat strips.

[MBZ] OT heat pump aux heat

2021-02-11 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
It is in the 20's today and will be into the single digits this week.
One thing I have noticed for quite a while is every now and then the
breaker for the aux heat will be tripped.  I usually just reset it and
its fine but the aux heat does not have to run much as it has not been
that cold.  When we got back I had it set for 65 and the breaker was
tripped again.  I set the temp back to 68 and checked later and the
breaker was tripped again.  I reset it and just now checked it and temp
is now up to 68 and the breaker tripped a 3rd time.  In other words, I
need to get this addressed.  What could be the cause?  Thought about
swapping out the breaker in case it was getting weak but what else could
be the cause?  Is it likely something is shorting in the heat strips
itself?  Not sure if I should investigate and resolve or just turn in a
service request to the home warranty company.

[MBZ] Made it back with the CD

2021-02-11 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Rolled back into Okie Acres a little while ago with the CD. After
picking it up Sunday I worked in Lubbock for the next couple of days and
left Wednesday morning.  Most of the time I was there the temps were in
the 70's.  When we left of course there was freezing fog all the way
thru west texas.  Temp never got over about 25 and on roads that are
normally 80mpg we were averaging about 60-65, so it took quite a while
longer.  We stopped at the half way point for the night and finished the
trip today.

Only the 560 SEL had SLS standard. The 300/420 SEL did not.
The SDL did not.

The habit comes from solid-axle vehicles, where the pumpkin and axles are all
one heavy-duty piece.

But I do it on MB's too.

Re: [MBZ] how do you jack up your car in your garage?

2021-02-11 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Yeah it is just that the diff mounts are not engineered for that much load,
so the rubber gets smashed.

I put a 2x6 about 18" long on the floor jack pad, then put that under the
car Jack point pad, running fore and aft. Jack it up. Stack lumber under
both ends of the 2x6. Remove jack. Reverse order to let it down.

I use an excell sheet to track my fuel and maintenance for each car I drive.
I have extra columns for keeping track of when I need to do several of the
regular maintenances as oil change and fuel and oil filters. I also track
miles per gallon trend total gallons used along total fuel purchases. See

Not sure about old MB but so many carmakers tell you not to do that.

With my old car, I have tried to stick with jacking using the tubular
jack points in the rocker panels. Fortunately, I have not had to jack it
up often but I have never really been sure where else it might be
considered safe to use the jack. My car is solid so I can jack with the
floor jack under the lift points if I want, but I wondered if that was a

lifting from the lift points with a floor jack rather than from under them.

In the garage I use a floor jack under a solid suspension or frame
component. I don't lift on the rocker panels even at the jack points.

Fortunately never need to jack up the car on the road.

Re: [MBZ] how do you jack up your car in your garage?

2021-02-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Floor jack under either the differential, or the front subframe. The factory
jack points on the cars I've had were so compromised they'd never support the
car...
I've got a Harbor Freight floor jack (not a trolley jack, those are not as
good) and its excellent. I don't ever want to go back to life without a real
floor jack.

I have been wondering about making a small hydraulic floor jack into a
jack for the purpose by welding a bolt or other round metal pin onto the
top of the jack cradle.

I think the pin might need to be able to tilt a bit as the jack lifted
the car but apart from that, it should be easy enough to do.

Opinions?

Yes, I do not live far from there. Do not visit very often, but have been
there. It is only about 6 miles form my house. Originally lived in
Wilmington and move to my current address about 13 years ago. Love it out in
the country!

You’re not far from Fort Ancient, a park that we visited regularly when I
