Re: [MBZ] w126 front suspension bushings

2022-03-01 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
I bought such a kit from FCP several years ago but they seem to have fewer
and fewer 126 parts these days (at least on the web site). My kit seemed to
have all good quality European rubber, as I recall. Couldn't hurt to call
them.

Subject: [MBZ] w126 front suspension bushings

Does anyone know of a kit with all the front suspension rubber bits on a
w126? I replaced the control rod bushings on the body side, but the caster
is still way out, so it needs control arm rubber and the rubber on the front
end of the guide rod, and the big subframe rubber bushings. I am thinking of
replacing the rear control arms while I am at it. I did the front ball
joints and shocks already, so no need to get them.

Maybe fcp?

Thanks

Yup. Yours will look slightly different too, IIRC the wide frame 3pt was a
little more squared off than the narrow.

One of my narrow frame machines has 3pt. You can't actually see the hitch but
you can see the plow on it here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/w3ZfTEuVjZ8NMWpU6
That was when I was making up a little garden for the deer last spring. I
planted bush beans and sweet peas. They ate all the plants by July, greedy
little buggers. I replanted with rye grass. It's fun to plant and see what the
deer like. I think the biggest winner yet has been turnips. I thought they
would only eat the tops but they pulled the roots out and ate those too.

Here's Angie running the other Cub Cadet. This one is a 70 from 1965...

Re: [MBZ] OT IH Cub Cadet tractor tiller attachment

2022-03-01 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
According to this

http://ccmanuals.info/pdf/70-100%203PT%20Install.pdf

From the illustration on page 3 I have the fixed drawbar but not the lower
hitch link, lift lever, or lift link.

That would be the first place I would check, however, with suppliers like
Lemförder making fewer and fewer of these parts I'm wondering if they're all
still available enough to make up a kit?

Keep us posted.

Subject: [MBZ] w126 front suspension bushings

Does anyone know of a kit with all the front suspension rubber bits on a
w126? I replaced the control rod bushings on the body side, but the caster
is still way out, so it needs control arm rubber and the rubber on the
front end of the guide rod, and the big subframe rubber bushings. I am
thinking of replacing the rear control arms while I am at it. I did the
front ball joints and shocks already, so no need to get them.

Maybe fcp?

Thanks

Hydraulic lift was standard on the 149 and 148.

I should get out my 149 and put a new battery in it.

That tiller attaches to the tractor's 3pt hitch which is a proprietary
thing, there is a C shaped bracket at the bottom of the transaxle,
about inline with the axles and a lifting rod that pivots on the same
bit the seat mounts to. They're uncommon and expensive.

Power for the tiller actually comes off the front of the tractor, a
rear PTO is a very rare option. The belt goes down the front of the
engine (these are all horizontal shaft engines) to a pair of wheels
that turn it under the tractor (so horizontally) to the tiller at the
rear. I've never actually seen one in person but it must be a very long

I *think* you might be able to use a narrow frame tiller on a wide
frame tractor but you won't be able to use it on a "modern" (say post
1990) lawn tractor. Certainly not one with a vertical shaft engine, at

Re: [MBZ] OT IH Cub Cadet tractor tiller attachment

2022-03-01 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Ahh, okay, wide frame but as I said in another note it doesn't seem like it
matters.

Do you already have a 3pt hitch? You need one to mount the tiller on. Those can
be spendy.

The sites I found also recommended spring assist or a hydraulic lift (which was
a factory option, or you could make your own) because of the weight of the
tiller. I've pulled a plow (plough for Fred), a disc harrow, cultivator and
back blade (not all at the same time) and they do require significant arm
strength to lift, way more than a mower deck would.

I guess I'm kind of on the look out for a creeper gear and tiller now, that
thing is pretty cool.

It is an International Cub Cadet 128.

Mine has the 3-speed (and reverse) transmission, not the creeper.

[MBZ] I guess the gorilla tape bumper repair will be all SWMBO gets

2022-03-01 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Basically what the story is she was driving in the left and dude with
trailer was in right lane.  He allegedly swerved into her lane while
passing on the right and his trailer caught the bumper.  The other dude
claims SWMBO swerved into his lane.  Cop arrives but this is basically a
he said she said deal.  Supposedly guy later admitted in front of cop
that he did in fact come over on her side and it was his fault.  Cop
asks if they want a police report and citations issues, or if they want
to let insurance handle it.  Wife opts for no report.  I let wife know
as soon as she contacts their insurance, there guy will say it was her
fault.  That is exactly what happened.  I guess SWMBO is screwed.  Not
sure how she will prove fault without a police report.  IMO if he really
admitted fault in front of cop, cop would put that on report, if their
was one.  I let SWMBO know you ALWAYS demand a report when it is the
other guys fault.  She says it was my fault because she called me to ask
and I did not answer.  I did not answer because I was in meetings trying
to work.

Sounds like my former 1962 Wheel Horse. Built like a brick doghouse, however,
not that great with anything other than a mower deck. I had a snowblower for

I think there was a tiller attachment for it, too, but like the snowblower I

Re: [MBZ] OT IH Cub Cadet tractor tiller attachment

2022-03-01 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I did a little more digging because, again I've never actually seen one of the
tillers in the flesh.
It turns out that the narrow and wide frame tillers are essentially the same so
as long as you don't have a "spread frame" (86 series so model number x86)
you're probably fine.

I noticed that the auction included a 90 degree gearbox, oh boy, I hadn't
realized how fun the belts on that thing are. So the long belt I talked about
before goes from the engine, down under the machine to the 90 degree gearbox
that sits behind the transaxle. That thing then lets the belt turn 90 degrees
sideways to run another belt to the tiller.

I did find a couple references that said you absolutely want a creeper gear or
a hydro machine. I'd already guessed that 1st gear would be too fast and I
think I'm right. Fortunately the clutch is relatively easy to replace ;)

Re: [MBZ] OT IH Cub Cadet tractor tiller attachment

2022-03-01 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
If it's belt drive it's not a narrow frame Cub Cadet, well unless it's an
Original, those used a weird system where a belt went from the engine down to
the driveshaft which went to the transmission. They're super weird because the
belt runs vertically, not like modern garden tractors where the belt runs
vertically from the engine to the transmission. Most people consider the
Original to be special and not really a narrow frame tractor.

That tiller attaches to the tractor's 3pt hitch which is a proprietary thing,
there is a C shaped bracket at the bottom of the transaxle, about inline with
the axles and a lifting rod that pivots on the same bit the seat mounts to.
They're uncommon and expensive.

Power for the tiller actually comes off the front of the tractor, a rear PTO is
a very rare option. The belt goes down the front of the engine (these are all
horizontal shaft engines) to a pair of wheels that turn it under the tractor
(so horizontally) to the tiller at the rear. I've never actually seen one in
person but it must be a very long belt.

I *think* you might be able to use a narrow frame tiller on a wide frame
tractor but you won't be able to use it on a "modern" (say post 1990) lawn
tractor. Certainly not one with a vertical shaft engine, at least not without
major adaptation.

Most residential doors open inward, probably so a storm or screen door can be
added. AFAIK, commercial doors open outward (and have panic hardware) so a pile
of panicked people trying to escape cannot block the door shut.

This would work best on a hydrostatic machine or a gear machine with a creeper

I've got a couple narrow frame Cubs, they're great.

I would be more concerned about tools and equipment. Burglars are far less

Inward-opening doors have a floor-space penalty because the swing area must be
kept clear. They are also more vulnerable to brute-force attacks because the
door jam helps resist a pushing attack.
Some people weld the hinge pin so it can't be removed.
You can also fabricate a hinge protector that works like the "non-live" locking
bolts on a safe. This shows the idea:

Re: [MBZ] Shop door

2022-03-01 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I have similar concerns for the service door on my garage at the Flagstaff
house. It’s a wooden frame service door, which, with minimal effort but a lot
of noise, could be breached.

This summer I plan on installing a steel frame/door. Not cheap, but if properly
installed is far more secure and a significant impediment to a burglar.

No doubt overkill, as we have little to no crime, and the house and garage are
both well covered with both cameras and lighting. However, the existing door is
pretty shabby to the point where it wouldn’t take much effort to force it open,
even with the current frame and deadbolt.

Interesting that the cargo included a lot of electric vehicles and the
lithium batteries are suspect in regard to the fire.

Maybe build a locked storage unit inside the garage as well and store

Cameras would be a good idea as well and a monitored alarm. People may
break in but if the alarm goes off, they will likely not stick around
for long. If you can reduce the time they are willing to invest, you
should reduce your damage.

Most fire codes I have encountered across the decades require one "man
door" to open outward per so many building square feet or distance from the
most remote place in the floor plan. [wording varies across jurisdictions,

Opening a large door would insert a huge oxygen supply to a fire, so not

Seems like you could do this anywhere on the hinge side of the door, would not
need to remove a hinge screw?

I would like one of the hinged doors like they have on aircraft hangars.
Opens out and up so is out of the way.

That reminds me they do sell hinges that do that. They have studs that stick
out and you have to drill holes in the frame and when the door is closed the
studs stick into the holes.

I taught myself to weld plastic about 3 years ago and quickly learned what
I needed to produce a strong repair that could easily be refinished to look
"factory". [Much the same hand / eye coordination used in TIG welding which
I've been doing for over 40 years, so easy shift to plastic].

Re: [MBZ] Shop door

2022-03-01 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
So we're talking about a man door where the hinge pins are on the outside?

Remove one screw from each hinge, insert a pin the same diameter as the screw
which protrudes from the hinge the depth of the other hinge. When the door is
closed the pins engage both hinges so the door cannot be removed even if the
hinge pins are knocked out.

No hinges to deal with, and the up/down rails are inside the building so
they can be sealed off from wind and water incursion.

Didn't realize you were talking about the pedestrian door. Use, steel,
and put the bar on the outside. Set it up so that it can be locked in
the open position so that you cannot be locked inside the garage.

I would like one of the hinged doors like they have on aircraft hangars. Opens

In rather than out is safer, in general, because you can't block somebody in
just by putting something big in front of the door. So, that's code for
residences.
With the extenuating circumstances of potential _crowds_, subject to panic and
in
sufficient quantities to roll against an un-blocked inward-opening door turning
the
door itself into a block, the code is reversed for public spaces.

The main entry doors on all my homes has always opened inwards. Not sure if a
different code would apply to a non-residential building like a shop or garage?

Isn’t it fire code it has to open outward? Although there are probably no fire
codes in Okieland.

Roll up door with a hand operated chain drive to roll it up, instead of
electric. Then if the electric goes out you can operate the door. The roll
up door takes up the least space since you don't have the overhead rails
like garage doors with spring assist, ect.
No hinges to deal with, and the up/down rails are inside the building so
they can be sealed off from wind and water incursion.
Cost a bit more, IMHO, worth it.
