Re: [MBZ] House thermostat

2022-07-02 Thread mitch--- via Mercedes
If the AC is running at some point in the day and humidity under
control, I can sleep fine at 72.
Weekdays, with time of use billing (they jack the rate up 50% from 2-7p
weekdays, and I assume that means Independence Day too) I run it at 68
from 6-8am, which dehumidifies like crazy, then 72 until 2pm (rarely
turns on), 80 until 7pm (never turns on), and 72 until 6am. Lately it's
been running more than an hour in the evening, less than an hour in the
early morning, and that's all. Hottest it's gotten by 7pm has been 76
this year. The dehumidifier in the basement uses way more electricity
than the 1.5T heat pump.

That battery I had that would never reach full charge per the smart charger,
would lose charge just sitting on the shelf, yet tested good and Walmart would
not replace because it tested good. Well I let it sit completely discharged for
about a month with these 90-100 degree temps and today charged it up to about
12.5 volts, now tests bad. Back to Walmart to get it replaced.

Re: [MBZ] House thermostat

2022-07-02 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I believe it’s well insulated but do have some leaks around the front door,
need to replace the gaskets around it. Even at nearly 100, when the thermostat
goes from 72 to 76, It will not reach 76 and start kicking on again until mid
afternoon so it holds the temp for quite a while. In fact during the spring
when it gets down into the 50’s at night and up into the 80’s during the day it
holds the cool air for overnight well enough that it was almost June before I
had to turn on the AC.

That’s about right, as I have a 2400 SF house in FL and it’s got a 4 ton unit.
If it’s oversized it short cycles and never gets the humidity down.

That’s interesting, as Costco really promotes the TopTier thing. I did notice
on their web site (TopTier) that they were apologizing for some locations not
being able to get their fuel.

I use a branded (smart) thermostat by Lennox on the Florida house, which is
kept at a constant 74F with AC because Mrs. Dan is “always hot”. When she’s out
of the house I turn it up to 76F, which is more than comfortable for me. If
we’re out of town I’ve got a program that lets it go up to 78F during the
weekdays when the oldest son is at work, then it throttles down to 76F when
he’s home.

In Flagstaff, we don’t use the AC much, and as the climate is very different
there, it’s (AC) not necessary most of the time. That and the house is very
well insulated. I installed a “Sensei” programmable (smart) thermostat from
Emerson in that house, and it works great.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Driverless robotaxis block San Francisco traffic for hours

2022-07-02 Thread mitch--- via Mercedes
When I see links to MSN or Yahoo, I try to find where the story came
from.

This appears to be the original story:
https://techcrunch.com/2022/06/30/cruise-robotaxis-blocked-traffic-for-hours-on-this-san-francisco-street/

Prompted by this twit and a Reddit discussion.
https://twitter.com/TaylorOgan/status/1542346416256843776

Some @Cruise robotaxis appeared to be stuck in SF last night at the
corner of Gough St. and Fulton St.

Human ops apparently had to rescue them. Still some kinks to iron
out. pic.twitter.com/eXDocjVfHU

— Taylor Ogan (@TaylorOgan) June 30, 2022

The cars appear to have been stalled at the intersection of Gough and
Fulton Streets.
“We had an issue earlier this week that caused some of our vehicles to
cluster together,” a Cruise spokesperson said. “While it was resolved
and no passengers were impacted, we apologize to anyone who was
inconvenienced.”
The vehicles were recovered through a combination of remote assistance
and manual retrieval.

“The first thing I say to my co-worker is that they’re getting together
to murder us,” wrote the OP. “It was a pretty surreal event. Humans had
to come and manually take the cars away. Cruise should get fined to shit
for blocking the street off for so long. They even made it so the street
sweeper couldn’t hit an entire block.”

Fines for blocking the street sweeper are around $76 per car in San
Francisco. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority (SFMTA)
did not respond to TechCrunch’s requests for more information about how
it handles such situations with autonomous vehicles and whether Cruise
will receive any fines for blocking the intersection.

The issue calls into question the policy cities need to build around
autonomous vehicles when they break the law, as well as Cruise’s own
operational protocol for these types of incidents.

No Costco in Flagstaff, closest one is over an hour away in Prescott. I use

18 1/2"- 18 3/4" from the ground to the center of the ball. I'd probably make
it 19" to compensate for tongue weight if it doesn't have self leveling
suspension.

Yeah, that’s similar to what I had for the previous ML500 and it did the job

Re: [MBZ] Determining Type of Tongue for Hitch

2022-07-02 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
> Is there a specific ball height I should go for, or does it matter?

No, and yes. So, you're a bit screwed. You have to have SOME idea of
what you'd tow before you know what kind of hitch to put in the receiver.
The trailer should end up towing level when you're done.

Once upon a time the trailer and towing vehicle all shared similar frame
construction, and tires. So a straight stinger was best. These days, with
big tires and lifted suspensions on most towing vehicles, yet trailers remaining
somewhat low to the ground for utility's sake, some amount of drop is best.

Re: [MBZ] Bluetec codes

2022-07-02 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
The real question is: What caused the system that orders the DPF to go into
regen mode to fail to regen the DPF?
If it was correctly operating the DPF would have "self cleaned" on a
regular basis thus never "clogged" [I think] Thus, either the
command to regen system failed, or the owner failed to keep enough DEF in
the DEF tank, which caused the system to fail... [that should have
triggered a nanny light or alarm [I think] telling the owner to "GO FILL UP
THE DEF TANK] and pitched a code into the blinking light system [I think].
So, the next question is, Does the engine shut down because the DPF is
plugged, or does the engine shut down because the DEF tank is empty [or the
solenoid that squirts DEF into the DPF self clean system failed and the
mighty nanny computer shuts the engine off?]
IE you don't get to limp home, call the dealer tow truck and pay the

2022-07-02 Thread MG via Mercedes
If the tractor can lift one end then you could
block that end up like Curt said. Once you have
one end high enough the use the tractor to lift
the other end and either block it or leave the
tractor there and back the trailer under it.

A few years ago I lifted a 40' container up and
put 22" house supports on concrete pads under it
one end at a time with the old track loader.
Worked real good for me.

Cut some of those oaks down to use as rollers - you need three - two under

I remember Dad coming home from work and telling that there was a gas price
war down the street, go fill my car - a 1951 bug. I only had $0.50 on me,
and the car would not hold that much gas! I think it was around 0.10/gal
and my tank was about half full (no gas gauge in 1951).

A couple 4x6 beams, a bottle jack and some blocking is all you need. 2

up enough to get the ramps under it, then maybe run a long strap around it at
the bottom where the supports are then start winching it up. I think I might be
over there today and will measure it to see is wide it is. For some reason I

up one the wheel fenders because I think it’s too wide to sit between them.

Re: [MBZ] Premium 16.9/gal

2022-07-02 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I remember a stretch of traffic lights breaking up the interstate on the
way to Boston from NYC where there was always a running competition to sell
the cheapest gas. 22 cents/gallon comes to mind. This was in the mid 60s.

Re: [MBZ] Moving a storage shed

2022-07-02 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Jack it up at one end so you can get it up enough to get the trailer under it
(block it up back a coupla feet so you can get the jack(s) out) then wrap
straps or chains around it to hook to the winch and pull it the rest of the way
onto the trailer. Throw straps over it to hold it down on the trailer.

I recall the spinny wheel pumps. I also recall nobody ever thought gas
would be more than 99.9, so you had to multiply by two...
