Re: [MBZ] Is the Mileage the Attraction?

2022-10-12 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
The price reflects the special effects paint job that only comes from years
of never parking the car under cover or protecting it from elements. That
alone makes the car so special it commands a multi digit price when coupled
with matching abuse indicators in the interior, undercarriage, and engine.
If cars could file domestic abuse charges, the owner would be under a
restraining order and have an assigned public defender lawyer.

Re: [MBZ] WiFi mesh

2022-10-12 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I have been looking into this briefly but most seem to indicate they replace
your existing router. My current setup is the modem/router has WiFi, from that
I have my main router plugged in acting as the primary. All of this is in my
office on one end of the house opposite the shop. I have a hard wire ran out to
the dining room area which is center of with an old router there acting as an
access point with its own WiFi ssid. I’m wondering if I can leave my existing
main router and WiFi network for use on that side of the house, and plug in the
mesh in place of the 2nd router in the middle of the house placing the nodes on
the other end of the house which might reach the shop. Now that I think about
it, I may have both routers plugged into the modem/router rather than the 2nd
router plugged into the first. I will have to see how I have that setup when I
get home. I’m thinking this would run 2 independent networks off the isp
modem/router?

I have some older Asus routers (RT-AC88U/AC68U) that I use for primary routing
and mesh. They work great, are easily configured, and have been trouble-free
for years. Not the latest and greatest, but serve the purpose.

As for the “modern” packaged mesh systems, I don’t know. I looked at them at
one time for the AZ house, but ended up going to what I have in FL for
consistency. Google, NetGear, all of the big names have them. Do some research
and see which ones come up best, or see if anyone else around here has
experience with them.

[MBZ] I did A Thing

2022-10-12 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Talked to seller on the phone after spending time with the 1992 E400
yesterday and struck a deal.  After speaking with our resident expert
and doing a bit of research I think I have a sense of what needs to be
done to the car so eyes wide shut!  I will go fetch it next week sometime.

Running badly, throttle body probably needs a wiring/controller rebuild
($500) and maybe a new upper wiring harness ($320), CHANGE YOUR FUSES,
the spark plug cables and some hoses he buggered up.  Tires are like
15yo but hold air, more or less, at this point so I guess I won't be
doing any high-speed runs any time soon.  A project but doesn't seem too
involved to deal with these things, just some dineros.

I am uploading a short walk-around vid the seller sent me, I have a
longer one I took yesterday I will post at some point.

The elevated bridge part will take some effort.

Re: [MBZ] I wonder how hard it is to assemble one of these?

2022-10-12 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Do the footings first, with the attach points to bolt down the arches.
Build the first arch, stand it up and brace it in squared up position, bolt
down the feet, both sides. [make sure the width measurements are right on
the mark.
Then, build each successive arch by bolting the segments to the one
standing up. Two guys on a man lift basket can handle each segment and get
it secured into place. Tip, put all the bolts in all the holes with nuts
and washers hand tight until you get the next segments in place which gives
you some "wiggle room" to fit it all together, then tighten the previous
segment.
Make sure none of the segment joints line up with the previous arch segment
joints, so you don't build a "failure line" into the structure.
Once you get it started right, it will go together like a giant leggo set.
Also, once the structure is up and bolted down to the footings, you can
pour the concrete floor in the shade. [your concrete workers will like that]

Re: [MBZ] EV's

2022-10-12 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
There is a guy at work with an EV motorcycle. I asked him what range he gets,
he said 50 - 100 miles depending on how he rides. Then he added, "most days
closer to 50."

I believe it's this one but not certain.

An EV in Flagstaff would make perfect sense. Plenty of sunlight for charging,
and the longest possible trip from one side of town to another being maybe 15
miles, if that. Now if you want to go anywhere else an ICE vehicle would be
required, as there’s nothing in the way of civilization in a 100 mile radius,
if that.

Glass is interesting in that the recycled product requires pretty much the same
treatment as the raw material and can't be any color but brown. Here in New
England ground glass is useful as road base so there is some point in recycling
it. In the dry southwest road base is less important...

Interesting thing - Flagstaff doesn’t recycle glass. You have to pay for a

Re: [MBZ] EV's

2022-10-12 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
LA is an excellent example of where EVs make sense. Most people never go
outside of a 5 mile circle anyway so limited range makes no difference.
Unfortunately California had a rectal/cranial inversion when it comes to
electricity production so EVs are going to exacerbate an existing problem.
Maybe if they get to the point that there is a big pv array on every rooftop...

in LA an electric car already makes a lot of sense for a lot of people. If
the prices ever come down, they will be the best option for maybe 70% of
vehicles on our roads. Just from a cost of ownership and convenience
perspective. A lot of families could have one EV and one ICE, rather than
two ICE cars.

One of the big advantages in a major metro is no point source emissions. It
will clean up our air quite a bit. It is hard to imagine how much exhaust
comes off the 405 every day. We live just over the hill from it.

Anyway I don't see diesel trucks going anywhere soon unless we get a lot
more serious about rail infrastructure. There is a lot of infrastructure
that would need to be built to make EVs more broadly practical than they
are also.

The electic grid would be fine. The impact would be less than the advent of
residential AC. Just build it up if needed. But they will all charge off
peak anyway, just the way my thermostat already gets turned up
automatically when demand is high on hot evenings.

Not a solution to every problem but EVs are a good solution to a lot of
problems. If we got serious about separating bike lanes from car lanes and
making cycling truly safe like they did in Holland, tons of people would
ride bikes here in LA and a lot of them would be electric. An electric bike
is an impressive thing. Much more impressive than electric cars, from a
power to weight perspective. If they can ever get this Aptera thing off the
ground, it would really be a cool mode of commuter transport. Until then a
velomobile with a power hub is as close as it gets. Electric skateboards
are also impressive, but less safe. Those One Wheel things will apparently
go 100 miles on a charge or something. They weigh nothing.

Re: [MBZ] EV's

2022-10-12 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
You just use a 3/4 ton truck and call it a 1/2 ton.
I have doubts about them off-road, that weight has to make them less capable.
In the end most pickup trucks are just pavement queens rarely used to haul
anything more exciting than the garbage. For the majority of owners an EV will
be fine.

That would make sense if we put plastic bags in the recycling. We don’t. They
get collected and kept inside to be dropped off at the grocery store where they
have a collection point.

Interesting thing - Flagstaff doesn’t recycle glass. You have to pay for a
separate container for glass recycling if you want to do it. I guess it cost
too much?
