Re: [MBZ] 300CE on eBay
I've got a '91 300CE 24-Valve as a daily driver. Be prepared for some expensive parts due to the smaller number of cars produced. When I bought it a couple of years ago it needed an electrical module (don't remember the exact name). A new one was over $1,500, found a used one for $300. I replaced the fuel distributor recently, Rusty has new ones for $1,600 but he found me a rebuilt one for $600 with core exchange. It needs a valve job and Jarek, Michael Hall's dad who works on it for me, quoted around $2,000 for the job. You have to use at least mid-grade gasoline and it runs better on premium. Positive points are it runs like a bat our of h***, with quick acceleration, takes corners like it is on rails and gets around 22 mpg. And as you say, it looks snazzy. Re: [MBZ] 300Dt trans
Mike: That sounds like low mileage for a bad transmission. You need to find an mechanic that has experience with this type of MB transmission. He will be able to either adjust it for no slips, tell you he can make it some better, or pronounce the tranny is toast. Your run of the mill repair shop will not know how to do the adjustments. I'm not sure where you are located, perhaps a list member in the area can recommend someone. You might ever consider the MB dealership. If the tranny is toast, don't use a regular tranny shop. They have probably never worked on a MB transmission. You can get a rebuilt from Rusty for around $1,850 and get it installed for $300-$500. Of course, shipping of two transmissions might cost a bit. I think there is another rebuild shop in New Jersey that some have used. Since the car is in great shape I wouldn't hesitate to replace the tranny. As other posters have said that is 4-5 payments on a new car, or if you get another older MB it will likely take that much to get it into the same shape as your car. Alan Duff Knoxville, TN From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Alan There are 187,000 miles on the car. I'm not the original owner so I don't know what has been done before I got it. I got it 40,000 miles ago. The fluid/filter was changed/flushed very recently. The mechanic said he adjusted something. It seemed to have changed the shift pattern slightly. Today when I drove it, it didn't seem to race/slip as much, but tomorrow's another day! Last week I took it to a tranny shop, and they said they would fix it for 1,800-1,900 dollars. Someone else said I should put in an exchange/rebuilt one. Even though the car is in great shape and I love driving it, I know the car is not worth the price of all the repairs that I could make to it. Re: [MBZ] 123 Alarm System/electric vacuum pump question
I just drove the 85 300D home yesterday as the temp gauge went quickly to red hot but I didn't think the engine was getting hot. Put in a replacement gauge yesterday and the temp is fine. Re: [MBZ] '82 300CD excessive oil usage-update
I may have missed it but have you checked for valve guides/seals. IIRC it takes a leak down test rather than a compression test to determine if they are bad. The ones in my 91 300CE are bad at 200k and it is buring a quart every 1,000 miles or so. It doesn't have any oil smoke at all, only some soot when punching down to 3rd gear at 80 mph to get on the interstate. My indy wants $1800 to do a full valve job which might as well be done and you have to pull the head on this engine to do valve guides/seals. The car runs and drives well. Has near perfect parchment MB-Tex seats, even the rear seat pad is in excellent condition. Several spots where the paint has peeled off to the metal with surface rust. Re: [MBZ] Center A/C Vents
It depends on the size of your hands. If they are smallish you can change the pods out by removing the blade insert and the glove box liner. By working through both openings it can be done but is not easy. I changed a pair in about 4-5 hours the only time I've done it. You can remove the pods and change the rubber diaphram but the plastic gets brittle and they tend to break, so I would just change the pod out. Before doing any of this test them with a Mity Vac. They will hold vacuum and you can hear them opening if they are operable. The other alternative is dash removal, I have no experience with this. Re: [MBZ] OT: For the Jeep freaks, interesting Grand Wagoneer
I have a '85 Grand Wagoneer that I've owned for a couple of years. The problem areas are: The oil pumps are a known wear out item and are housed in the aluminum timing cover. Wear results in low oil pressure and the fix usually requires both to be replaced. Mine went from 15 psi to 60 psi at highway speeds after replacement. Cost of parts is around $450. Probably a one day job if no bolts break off. The carbs are Motorcraft and work ok at highway and offroad. The need to be rebuilt every couple of years and usually require adjustment in the spring and fall to run correctly. Good fix is a Holly Avenger carb at about $400 plus a new intake at $200. A better fix is fuel injection at $2,000. The engines tend to overheat due to a marginal cooling system. Best fix is a Flowkooler water pump at around $200 and a four core aluminum radiator at $400. Expect the bolts to be frozen in the block and require much time and assorted breakage to get them out. The clunk is likely a u-joint. These things have several of them in the drivetrain and require frequent greasing. Some in the front are almost impossible to get to and tend to get skipped. The sending unit in the fuel tank tends to go out and leave the gauge reading at full so you don't know how much gas you have. This is not a real problem as you need to stop at every third gas station anyway. I get about 8 mpg with mine which has the 360 V-8, the six bangers get a little better mileage. The rear springs tend to sag on the drivers side where the gas tank is. Stock complete replacement springs are around $400 and ones with a four inch lift around $600, plus shipping and those things are heavy. You will need a torch, Sawsall, BIG hammer and lots of time to get the bolts holding the springs out. They will have rusted in the metal lining of the bushing. The one holding the front of the rear spring on the drivers side goes through a hole in the frame to a nut clipped on the backside. This will break and require removal of the skid plate and gas tank to replace. This probably needs to be done anyway as the skid plate tends to trap mud and rust out so it will need replaced. If there is any rust on the frame you don't want it. The good points are the things will go anywhere offroad while hauling serveral adults and lots of gear. Alan Duff Knoxville, TN

Re: [MBZ] starting a dormant 300D
My method is to first be sure you have clean fuel in the car. Drain, refill and use the hand pump if necessary. Put a fully charged battery on the car. Use jumper cables to connect another fully charged battery to it. Spray a few shots of WD-40 into the air intake. Turn the glow plugs on and be sure they are working, easy on the '80 model. Heat the glow plugs eight or ten times. Turn the key until the engine starts or the battery drains. Often the engine will fire the cylinders in succession and you may have to hold the key on start until all five cylinders have fired. This has always worked for me unless the compression is too low, then it takes a pull start. But then engine is useless in it's current state anyway if you have to pull start it. [MBZ] Roof Bike Rack for '91 300CE
The posts for the trailer hitch reminded me that I'm looking for a roof mount bike rack to fit my CE. Using a generic trunk rack and want to be able to open the trunk on trips without taking the bikes off. It has four points that are drilled and tapped for bolts on the rook. A small flip cover goes over them. I assume this is designed for a roof rack. Have searched the net but don't find a specific listing for the car. It has no gutter lips to mount a rack, so the factory set up is it. Alan Duff Knoxville, TN
Re: [MBZ] 124 windshield replacement advice
From: Alex Chamberlain [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm in the market for a new windshield for my 124. Should my indy do it, or can any old McMobileGlass business do it right and cheaper? A 124 could be a different story in that most glass places MIGHT be able to handle it. I had two screwed up installs on a 116 and a 123. Called the service manager at the local MB dealership and asked who they used. Most if not all dealerships send their glass work out. Used that company with good results. Alan Duff Knoxville, TN

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes on Ebay
I'm sure shill bidding goes on in Ebay auctions. I've sold several cars on Ebay and had a lot of zero feedback bidders. Never had one win but they were legitimate bidders so I assume some guys are looking for a car, so they set up an Ebay account and start bidding. Alan Duff Knoxville, TN - Original Message - From: Scott Levengood I've bid on quite a few Mercedes on Ebay recently and I always seem to be bidding against someone with zero feedback. It didn't bother me at first but it seems that it is now happening all the time. Have any of you out there noticed the same thing?

Re: [MBZ] Freeing a frozen caliper bleed screw
Heat it again and them use a hammer and chisel to tap the screw in the proper direction. The jarring of the blows seem to help get it started moving. Alan Duff Knoxville, TN On Thu, 23 Jun 2005 08:34:40 -0400 (EDT), Kevin J. Slater [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote : Help, I have a frozen bleed screw on a brake caliper and I can't figure it out. The caliper isn't on our Mercedes 300TD, that work commences after vacation. The stuck screw is on our van (92 Transport) and we're planning to leave for vacation tomorrow. My only recourse if I can't get it free will be to replace the entire caliper! Really don't want to do that. I've tried heat (Oxy/Map), I've tried PB Blaster and of course I've completely mangled the hex portion with a pair of vice grips. Any suggestions from all of you wise(guy) shade-tree mechanics? ...Kevin ___ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] For new parts see www.buymbparts.com For repairs see www.oldworldauto.com To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://striplin.net/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_striplin.net
