I've got a '91 300CE 24-Valve as a daily driver. Be prepared for some
expensive parts due to the smaller number of cars produced. When I bought
it a couple of years ago it needed an electrical module (don't remember
the exact name). A new one was over $1,500, found a used one for $300. I
replaced the fuel distributor recently, Rusty has new ones for $1,600 but
he found me a rebuilt one for $600 with core exchange. It needs a valve
job and Jarek, Michael Hall's dad who works on it for me, quoted around
$2,000 for the job. You have to use at least mid-grade gasoline and it
runs better on premium.
Positive points are it runs like a bat our of h***, with quick
acceleration, takes corners like it is on rails and gets around 22 mpg.
And as you say, it looks snazzy. Mine is black with grey interior and 16
inch wheels from a CLK.

2006-09-03 Thread Alan Duff

Mike:

That sounds like low mileage for a bad transmission. You need to find an
mechanic that has experience with this type of MB transmission. He will be
able to either adjust it for no slips, tell you he can make it some better,
or pronounce the tranny is toast. Your run of the mill repair shop will not
know how to do the adjustments. I'm not sure where you are located, perhaps
a list member in the area can recommend someone. You might ever consider the
MB dealership.
If the tranny is toast, don't use a regular tranny shop. They have probably
never worked on a MB transmission. You can get a rebuilt from Rusty for
around $1,850 and get it installed for $300-$500. Of course, shipping of two
transmissions might cost a bit. I think there is another rebuild shop in
New Jersey that some have used. Since the car is in great shape I wouldn't
hesitate to replace the tranny. As other posters have said that is 4-5
payments on a new car, or if you get another older MB it will likely take
that much to get it into the same shape as your car.

There are 187,000 miles on the car. I'm not the original owner so I

The fluid/filter was changed/flushed very recently. The mechanic said he
adjusted something. It seemed to have changed the shift pattern
slightly.
Today when I drove it, it didn't seem to race/slip as much, but
tomorrow's

another day!

Last week I took it to a tranny shop, and they said they would fix it
for
1,800-1,900 dollars. Someone else said I should put in an
exchange/rebuilt

Even though the car is in great shape and I love driving it, I know the

I may have missed it but have you checked for valve guides/seals. IIRC it
takes a leak down test rather than a compression test to determine if they

every 1,000 miles or so. It doesn't have any oil smoke at all, only some
soot when punching down to 3rd gear at 80 mph to get on the interstate. My

you have to pull the head on this engine to do valve guides/seals.

Speaking from experience on removing motor mount bolts. Clean the bolt so
that it is free of any dirt or other residue. Get the proper size hex
wrench in a socket drive. Use some taps on the wrench to break the bolt
loose. You don't want to strip the head of the bolt out.

[MBZ] Bad Ground in Dash?

2006-03-16 Thread Alan Duff
Still working on making my recently acquired '83 300D road worthy. Just need
to get the tranny adjusted, it is shifting quick and flaring. Finishing up
on the instrument cluster. Took out the odo and did the normal repair as it
worked intermittently. Noticed when it was not working the fuel and
temperature gauges did not read properly. The fuel gave swayed up and down
and the temp gauge pegged. Also the seat belt light comes on and off and
the buzzer stays on constantly unless the seat belt is fastened.
After the repair, the fuel gauge still sways and the temp gauge reads 80C
with a stone cold engine. IIRC this was the same symptoms a previous car
exhibited and it was fixed by soldering a wire onto the printed circuit
board for a new ground. I've lost the link to the repair which had a
description and pictures. Does this sound like the problem and does anyone
have the link?

Re: [MBZ] Center A/C Vents

2006-01-05 Thread Alan Duff
It depends on the size of your hands. If they are smallish you can change
the pods out by removing the blade insert and the glove box liner. By
working through both openings it can be done but is not easy. I changed a
pair in about 4-5 hours the only time I've done it. You can remove the pods
and change the rubber diaphram but the plastic gets brittle and they tend to
break, so I would just change the pod out. Before doing any of this test
them with a Mity Vac. They will hold vacuum and you can hear them opening if
they are operable.

The other alternative is dash removal, I have no experience with this.

Re: [MBZ] OT: For the Jeep freaks, interesting Grand Wagoneer

2005-11-12 Thread Alan Duff
I have a '85 Grand Wagoneer that I've owned for a couple of years. The
problem areas are:

The oil pumps are a known wear out item and are housed in the aluminum
timing cover. Wear results in low oil pressure and the fix usually
requires both to be replaced. Mine went from 15 psi to 60 psi at highway
speeds after replacement. Cost of parts is around $450. Probably a one day
job if no bolts break off.

The carbs are Motorcraft and work ok at highway and offroad. The need to
be rebuilt every couple of years and usually require adjustment in the
spring and fall to run correctly. Good fix is a Holly Avenger carb at
about $400 plus a new intake at $200. A better fix is fuel injection at
$2,000.

The engines tend to overheat due to a marginal cooling system. Best fix is
a Flowkooler water pump at around $200 and a four core aluminum radiator
at $400. Expect the bolts to be frozen in the block and require much time
and assorted breakage to get them out.

The clunk is likely a u-joint. These things have several of them in the
drivetrain and require frequent greasing. Some in the front are almost
impossible to get to and tend to get skipped.

The sending unit in the fuel tank tends to go out and leave the gauge
reading at full so you don't know how much gas you have. This is not a
real problem as you need to stop at every third gas station anyway. I get
about 8 mpg with mine which has the 360 V-8, the six bangers get a little
better mileage.

The rear springs tend to sag on the drivers side where the gas tank is.
Stock complete replacement springs are around $400 and ones with a four
inch lift around $600, plus shipping and those things are heavy. You will
need a torch, Sawsall, BIG hammer and lots of time to get the bolts
holding the springs out. They will have rusted in the metal lining of the
bushing. The one holding the front of the rear spring on the drivers side
goes through a hole in the frame to a nut clipped on the backside. This
will break and require removal of the skid plate and gas tank to replace.
This probably needs to be done anyway as the skid plate tends to trap mud
and rust out so it will need replaced. If there is any rust on the frame
you don't want it.

The good points are the things will go anywhere offroad while hauling
serveral adults and lots of gear.

clean up ok, but has some age cracks. Rear grommet under the brake fluid
resevoir leaks. ACC works but blows hot. Could be driven home if you are
prepared to fix the brakes first. $500.

1983 300SD - Dark blue with tan MB-Tex interior, with sunroof. 275k miles.
Front seats have cracks and drivers seat spring/pad is shot. Engine and
transmission are sound with the shift to 2nd a bit hard, but not bad. No
rust, clear coat is faded on the hood, top and trunk. ACC works and blows
just a bit cool, needs charged. Could be driven home but the tires look
dry-rotted to me. I can get some good used ones mounted at buyers cost.
$1,500

Re: [MBZ] changing the motor mounts W123

2005-09-01 Thread Alan Duff
I've used a bottle jack with no problems, just be sure to use a thick
board to spread out the force. You need to get the hex bolt heads
underneath the mounts cleaned out completly and tap the hex wrench in
solid before trying to loosen the bolt. If you strip the head out you get
to remove the bearer arm and them cut the mount in half to remove it.

[MBZ] 123 Brakes

2005-08-26 Thread Alan Duff
Just bought a 83 300D. The brake pedal is rock hard and only moves down a
quarter inch or so and the car is slow to stop. The brakes don't seem to
drag. Don't recall having this type of problem before. My thoughts are
1. Stuck piston in a brake caliper
2. Stuck master cylinder.
Any ideas?

I had one indy do some work and it improved a little. He was competent so it
is likely not an easy fix. Runs rough and blows black smoke. My new indy
said it could be as much as $1,500 to fix, as the system is complex and you
have to work through as you go. Looks just like this one.

I'm on my way now. Let's see, it's 9:30 pm in Toronto now. It's 2
hours to the border, then a 4 hour wait there to cross after getting
the rubber glove love treatment.

You say the fuel injection is the only problem?

Re: [MBZ] starting a dormant 300D

2005-08-23 Thread Alan Duff
My method is to first be sure you have clean fuel in the car. Drain,
refill and use the hand pump if necessary. Put a fully charged battery on
the car. Use jumper cables to connect another fully charged battery to it.
Spray a few shots of WD-40 into the air intake. Turn the glow plugs on and
be sure they are working, easy on the '80 model. Heat the glow plugs eight
or ten times. Turn the key until the engine starts or the battery drains.
Often the engine will fire the cylinders in succession and you may have to
hold the key on start until all five cylinders have fired. This has always
worked for me unless the compression is too low, then it takes a pull
start. But then engine is useless in it's current state anyway if you have
to pull start it.

[MBZ] Roof Bike Rack for '91 300CE

2005-07-13 Thread Alan Duff
The posts for the trailer hitch reminded me that I'm looking for a roof
mount bike rack to fit my CE. Using a generic trunk rack and want to be
able to open the trunk on trips without taking the bikes off. It has four
points that are drilled and tapped for bolts on the rook. A small flip
cover goes over them. I assume this is designed for a roof rack. Have
searched the net but don't find a specific listing for the car. It has no
gutter lips to mount a rack, so the factory set up is it.

A 124 could be a different story in that most glass places MIGHT be able to
handle it. I had two screwed up installs on a 116 and a 123. Called the
service manager at the local MB dealership and asked who they used. Most if
not all dealerships send their glass work out. Used that company with good
results.
