[MBZ] Let's try this again: caveat emptor reginald stone

2005-11-09 Thread David Goldsmith
Sorry about the "empty" message before; this is what I
was trying to send:

Ok, Im ready to name names: the guy who sold me the
bum Vanagon is Reginald Reggie Stone of Shoreline -
buyer beware this seller. (To be fair, I should
emphasize that I did understand it to be an as is
sale, and that, due to the rarity of the commodity, I
skipped the usual security of an independent
inspection prior to purchase. However, the guy sold an
engine w/ a bad head gasket w/o disclosing that
defect, and when later confronted w/ this, flatly
refused to make good in any way.)

Now all he has to do is organically grow his own flax,
process it himself, and he'll be all set!

The unfortunate fact is that the way dino fuel is
going, there won't be much price pressure on him to
lower that. :(

Re: [MBZ] Bio prices

2005-10-05 Thread David Goldsmith
I think we pay for them to mix it for us (plus it's
been suggested to me that the tax break is less for
B20 than it is for B99); I observed the same phenom
where I get mine: the price order, lowest to highest,
was B0 (by only $0.02), B99, B20, by about $0.10 or
so. Whether B0 or B100 is more expensive, B20
_should_ be in between; if it ain't just mix it
yourself at the pump (assuming where you buy it has
B100 or B99; if not, I guess you're out of luck. Easy
way to estimate how much B0 and B100 you need for B20:
estimate how much total you need, then divide by 5
(which is same as doubling and then dividing by 10)
put that much B100 in, then filler-up with B0; for
info purposes only, I do not endorse purchasing any
amount of fossil fuel).

[MBZ] Making a 2000 Dodge 2500 diesel "Biodiesel ready"

2005-10-03 Thread David Goldsmith
Hi, folks! Wife and I are on the verge of buying an
'00 Dodge 2500 diesel to run on biodiesel. My main
concern, given my history, is with fuel injector
return lines. On examining the engine, I noted that
the injectors appear to be inside the engine block, or
at least not have return lines. Which of these is in
fact the case? If the injectors are inside the block,
do they have return lines, and if so, are they made of
rubber, metal, or what? If made of non-Viton rubber,
how difficult is it to get at them to replace them?
Are there any other biodiesel-related issues
particular to Cummins diesels of this era of which we
should be aware?

Also, the engine was louder than we expected (and
we've heard other diesels, including other diesel
pick-ups which we've test driven, but all these were
Fords) but otherwise seemed to run smoothly; could
that be cause for concern?

Finally, about when do these vehicles need the timing
belt replaced, and about how expensive a service is
that (parts and labor)?

Sorry to bother you, and thanks!

DG

[MBZ] CARFAX request

2005-10-02 Thread David Goldsmith
Howdy! Every once in a while I notice someone here asking someone to run a
CARFAX for 'em. I've never read any of those requests to know whether payment
is offered. In any event, if someone can do it gratis, might that someone run
me a CARFAX on VIN 1B7KF2363YJ125888 - it's an '00 Dodge diesel RAM 2500.
Thanks!

Hi Al,
Is it possible to change a B2 piston on an '85 200 SD with the trans in =
the car? Is it very time consuming?

It is, assuming it is a federal-spec 722.3 car ('85 California cars had
a 722.4 trans). I've never done it on a 126, but it has much more room
to work than a 123, in which the B2 can be done in a day.

[MBZ] Biodiesel mpg benefits from timing advance? (was Approx. 35mpg from an '87 Mercedes 300D TURBO Diesel)

2005-09-28 Thread David Goldsmith
My recently deceased '82 240D "ran fine" on B99, but
"underperformed" in the mpg category (though I imagine
part of that was probably my average speed over
70mph); I noticed no such problem w/ my '03 TDI (same
mpg, more or less, with B99 or B0). It was suggested
to me by more than one party (incl. here on this list,
I believe) that this _might_ be alleviated by
advancing the timing a little; this didn't need to be
done, it was claimed, on the TDI 'cause the electronic
timing control was automatically doing it dynamically.

[MBZ] '82 240D engine in a '79 300TD wagon?

2005-09-27 Thread David Goldsmith
Hi! What body type and transmission would a '79 300TD
wagon have and would either of these require
substantial modification to use an '82 240D engine?
Thanks!

Re: [MBZ] Approx. 35mpg from an '87 Mercedes 300D TURBO Diesel

2005-09-27 Thread David Goldsmith
Thanks everyone. Yeah, I kind of knew they were
exaggerating. Actually, it's a used
Merc/Bimmer/Jag/Porche specialty shop/dealer, and
there's much else wrong w/ the car: lots of electrical
stuff don't work, e.g., the CC, the rear windows, the
sun roof, the power antenna, the headlight wipers,
etc., (obviously, I suspected the fuses, so I checked
those but none were obviously blown), but it drives
nice - it being a service place, I suspect they did
the minimum to make the car run ok, then put 'er on
craiglist to try to minimize their losses. I'm going
to Blue Book it and think 'er over.

DG

PS: Assuming its timed right for petrol diesel, about
how far forward should the timing be set for B99; or
did these things have electronic timing control by
'87? Thanks again.

Re: [MBZ] Totaled my 240D (mostly for Seattle-area folks): Reply & Supplement

2005-09-14 Thread David Goldsmith
It steers and you can see over the hood, but the
vehicle lost power upon collision and wouldn't restart
when I tried to do that to drive the vehicle to the
shoulder (lucky for me, an ambulance happened by
almost immediately after the accident and after
confirming that all humans were ok and then confirming
that I couldn't start the vehicle, the EMT's pushed
while I steered to the shoulder). However, I didn't
try long or hard to start it, so I guess it's possible
it might start. That's the "good" news.

The bad news is that the lot won't allow 3rd parties
not-accompanied-by-owner on the lot to look over
vehicles. I won't be back in Seattle 'til tomorrow
morning, but then I'll be happy to meet interested
parties at the lot to show the vehicle. (I have to go
by it anyway at some point to get the rest of my
personal belongings).

Also, a clarification: "you tow" is obviously a
"minimum bid" - there really is a good deal of value
still in/on the car, so a "best offer" will include
some cash in addition to removing the vehicle.

Thanks again,

DG

No, front is pushed in too badly, must be towed.
(Plus, you wouldn't be safe driving the thing as is -
can't open the front passenger door as is, so, God
forbid, were you to get in another accident preventing
driver egress, you'd be pretty much screwed if you had
to get out in a hurry.)

Hi, folks! So, it was bound to happen sooner or

'82 240D. :(( Despite severe front end damage, much
of the engine (e.g., new battery, alternator, Viton
fuel return lines, strong engine largely serviceable I
think) and body (everything from the front doors back,
new Goodyear tires) is usable. It sits in the tow lot
at the NW corner of Mercer and Fairview in Seattle -

Re: [MBZ] [OT & Oly, WA only] '03 TDI JETTA compatible VAG COM

2005-09-06 Thread David Goldsmith
The full story: very shortly after getting my car back
from Dr. Dan's last Thurs., the "Check Engine" light
came on, so I quickly brought it back to him. His
VAG-COM returned a glow plug #3 problem, which he
reported is a very common problem on that car. But
upon checking it (removing it and sending a current
through it), it appeared to be working fine (it glowed
orange-red), so he put it back in, reset my onboard
diagnostic computer, and sent me on my merry way. I
got back to Oly without the check engine light
reawakening, but the next day my wife reports that
it's lit again. I was going to take the car (my
wife's) back to Dr. Dan's today, but she needed it
down in Oly, so I thought I'd continue to try to find
someone down in Oly I could prevail upon to see if
it's still complaining about GP3 before taking it back
to Dan's, probably tomorrow. Thanks!

Re: [MBZ] OT: Why'd VW Pull the TDI Passat?

2005-08-31 Thread David Goldsmith
Exactly, it's absolutely insane: University VW (in
Seattle) confirmed there are no new '05 TDI Passat
wagons West of the Rockies, and only "a few" left East
of 'em; this is in the US, however - North of the
border, I easily found three Vancouver, BC area
dealers each with multiple '05 TDI Passat Wagons in
stock! The most plausible hypothesis I hear
consistently is that they underestimated US demand,
can't meet it, and want to make sure they keep their
existing TDI customers in the rest of the world happy,
so we get the short end of the stick. Bummer for us,
and poor planning on their part, but I can't say as I
blame 'em.

We run B100 in our '03 TDI and B50 in our '82 240D.
Our results are basically the same as yours, but I
think we've had low to no drop (0 to 10%) in mileage
on B100 in the late model TDI; anecdotally, the older
the engine (or design thereof), the bigger the drop in
mpg going to biodiesel - any hypotheses, folks?

But from what I read, you're supposed to be able to
present paperwork certifying compliance when you bring
the thing across the border - how's this supposed to
happen if the mods need to be performed by a
"registered US company" (I guess those exist in
Canada, but for this particular purpose)? Has anyone
reading this actually brought in from Canada a new car
recently? Thanks!

Re: [MBZ] Importing diesels from CA

2005-08-30 Thread David Goldsmith
Actually, according to Web-listed dealer inventory
there are no new '05 TDI Passat Wagons within 400 km
of Seattle on the US side of the border. However, w/
very little effort, I found three Vancouver, BC area
VW dealers each w/ multiple '05 TDI Passat Wagons.
So, according to you, I should have little to no
trouble bringing it in, since the '05 TDI Passat Wagon
was marketed here this past year?

I don't think that portion of our taxes which goes to
subsidize PT is unreasonable; indeed, if anything,
it's not "reasonable" enough.

Hi, all! Revisiting a recurring topic here: is it any
easier to import a diesel from our neighbor to the
North (with whom we ostensibly share no trade barriers

In both our cars (of different makes and vastly
different ages and miles), within a month of
eachother? That would seem to suggest a fuel problem,
but Bill said the fuel tested out fine, and lots of
other people are buying the same fuel and it's a
pretty tight knit BD community here in Oly - you'd
think word would get around if there was a problem w/
the fuel (I certainly spread the word after our TDI
incident). Plus, the word on the TDIclub forum is
that this is actually not that uncommon of a problem,
and not just w/ BD, only somewhat more frequently w/
BD. (Though unscientific, the impression I got from
the geographic origin of the comments is that the
problem is more prevalent in warmer climes,
reinforcing the suspicion that it's a heat induced
problem.) Plus at least two other pro-BD "local"
mechanics are using Viton (Dave of Dave and Zane's and
Dr. Dan) so not every "expert" around here appears to
share your belief that all is well and good w/ the
stock equipment. All this said, if your still
interested in looking over my rig, I'd certainly
appreciate the input.

I get 1/2 a tank of B100 (99 lately, actually) from a
CFN cardlock station in Oly and then fill 'er up with
petrol diesel. When our TDI had the same problem, I
did suspect the fuel, so I brought a sample to my
mechanic who said he could test it, but he reported no
problems (I do suspect, however, that the age of the
fuel I get there might be an issue). Personally, I'm
now convinced it's primarily the heat (which is the
best explanation I got at the TDIClub biodiesel
forum): it only just started to get into the upper
80's around here; I've been stuck in traffic in the
heat alot recently (and when I'm not I "push" the
engine, if you know what I mean); and though still far
from the red, just before my wife noticed the puddle
under my car, I noticed my temperature reading was a
little higher than I usually see it. As Viton is
rated to withstand temps up to 550degF, I'll place my
faith in it.

Yes; for the courtesy of your address, I'd be happy to
send you (and any other interested readers) a piece to
examine.

P.S. for redghost: Bow Wow does not inventory Viton
tubing - good thing I called before I went there.

Re: [MBZ] URGENT Need for Viton fuel hoses in Puget Sound

2005-07-26 Thread David Goldsmith
Well, perhaps you'd like to come clean the gallon plus
of B50 off the floor of my carport. All I know is
that after only 33K miles this happened to our TDI
about 6 weeks or so ago and at that time we were
advised to replace the hoses, the failed and not
failed, w/ Viton or silicone-based. We let our
mechanic have his way with our car, but I now know he
didn't use Viton, and given that the hoses he did
install on my 240D soon after I bought it this past
Oct. have failed after only 11,000 miles (he says
today he warrants them for only 6 mo. or 6000 miles)
I'm quite concerned for the TDI as well. I'll go with
the Viton and if they don't fail within the year, I'll
invite you again to come look at the stains on my
carport floor.

[MBZ] URGENT Need for Viton fuel hoses in Puget Sound

2005-07-25 Thread David Goldsmith
Hi, folks! I need some Viton fuel lines (return
lines, I think, the ones that come up from the little
nozzles which come up out of the injectors, I think is
what they are) and bad! (My '82 240D is leaking B50
all over my carport; I thought it'd only leak if the
fuel line was pressurized, i.e., if the car was
running, but it continued to leak through the night,
so I tried to clamp off the lines this morning, but I
had to leave for work, so I don't know how successful
I was - I'm assuming the worst! :( Viton tubing was
very strongly recommended in a TDIClub forum when I
had a similar problem recently with my '03 TDI.) Does
anyone know who might stock these in the Puget Sound
area, preferably on the I5 Seattle to Oly corridor?
Also, what is the required inside diameter for these
lines for the '82 240D, and does anyone know why hose
clamps aren't used for additional security - is it the
heat? Can't one get steel or brass hose clamps if
this is the issue? Thanks!!!

Re: [MBZ] Re: OT: Another Bimmer diesel

2005-07-16 Thread David Goldsmith
Casey-

Did you see how much that converted-to-diesel
280Z went for on Ebay some months back, something
close to (or over) $13K I believe. Granted, w/ 7+
more days to go, this car probably won't stay below
$2K, but you buy that car, put the engine in a sexier
body, and I bet you could at least triple your money.

The "notchback" allows quasi-stationary eddies and
generally lower free-stream air velocities in the
notch, which translates into larger drag.
