I accidentally hit two keys on an ATM the other day and it crashed. It
rebooted automatically as Windows XP. It was amazing that a bank would use
Windows XP when it is the target of so many attacks.

Also, it seems like nearly all the local small businesses, professionals,
etc. are using Windows workstations and Windows servers. Is Windows so much

better than other workstations/servers that others cannot compete?

EVERYBODY KNOWS a T-tail with aft engines, power off and the nose rises, so
you have to push/hold the nose down as the power is reduced when landing.

They are out of service for two reasons -- noise (minor) and severe
fuel consumption problems. Not really possible to remove the center
engine and rebuild the tail so you could put CFM-56's on it, and I
suspect the 757/767 classes have better wings, too. Same fuselage on
the 757/737 anyway, no change there. I suspect there are airflow
problems with large bypass engines stuck on the sides of the rear
fuselage, too -- no one has put them there since the 60's, and I don't
believe any were high bypass designs, either.

[MBZ] Jeep Adding Diesel Grand Cherokee

2006-06-03 Thread George Gregory
Jeep Adding Diesel Grand Cherokee

DaimlerChrysler's new Bluetec diesel engine will make its way into the Jeep
Grand Cherokee in the first quarter of 2007, the company announced on
Thursday. The engine, which will first be found in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class
this fall, is a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 with common-rail fuel injection.
While the engines will be supplied from Mercedes plants, the Grand Cherokee
diesel will be assembled in Detroit by Chrysler. The Grand Cherokee will
join the Liberty in Jeep's diesel lineup; Chrysler estimates it will have
fuel economy 30 percent better than the gas-engine versions, with a driving
range of 425 miles versus 300 miles for a gas-powered model.

Ok, got the key back together. Now I need to remember how to program the
new fob to my car.

I had instructions on this that came with the fob when I first got it three
years ago.

Now I don't remember the procedure. Anybody know what it is?

Can anyone recall where I might have seen instructions on repairing the
infrared key fobs on the late 1990s cars?

I googled "infrared key fob repair" on mercedesshop and "how to repair
mercedes infrared key 1997 SL500", and "mercedes key fob repair" on google.

I bought a new one from Rusty and then wrecked that car. My current car fob
fell apart, and I'd like to put the current car's key on the new fob that
belonged to the wrecked car.

The R129 is a great car. My first one had all the problems of the mid-90s
cars, like the bad wires etc.

Fortunately, that had been resolved on my SL320. When I needed to replace
that car, I searched for another 129.

Mine is my daily driver. I can drive to Costco and get a month's worth of
crap in the trunk.

Its a comfortable driver, and gets 25mpg on the highway. I bought this car
on July 10, 2003 and overpaid a little bit, but it was the best car
available at the time. I traveled to Chicago to buy it, paid $23,500. I am
the second owner and the car always was dealer serviced (Knauz) prior to my
purchase. It had 68,945 miles on it when I bought it.

Other than routine maintenance, the only large expense was

Replace ACC Blower Motor & housing/blower-motor mount
Replace Aux Water Pump and Center Vent Assembly

In July, 2005. The aux water pump didn't really need replacement, but the
dealer threw parts at the car in order to find out why my climate control
didn't work. Since the aux pump had been installed, it wasn't worth it to
remove.

That whole event still rankles me. The whole reason I took the car to the
dealer was so the problem could be professionally diagnosed. Boy was I dumb
about that

That episode also showed me what a fine and honest businessman Rusty is.

Now the car has 103,000 miles on it, and I regularly drive between St Louis
and Cincinnati with no concerns.

The SL320 / 300SL will have the M104 engine... nice motor, it has the
usual issues with head gaskets like most of the M104's, don't think
there's anything else major to worry about. The SL500 / 500SL will
have the M119 engine, which is a real powerhouse... no major problems
there, but usually due for a timing chain & rails by 150k (and it's
not as easy or cheap to do as our old diesels). The M119 is a fairly
expensive engine to maintain, though... not that the M104 is cheap,
but the M119 is a notch above. The 500SL had mechanical (KE?)
injection from 90-92 and then bumped up to the electronic LH injection
starting in 1993, IIRC.

If your wife doesn't care about power (and you don't either), I'd
stick with the SL320. If one of you wants a *fast* car, get the SL500.
Drive both and let us know how you like them! I'd love a late R129
SL500 'Silver Arrow' edition with the AMG Sport package. Mmmm.

I had a 1995 SL320 and subsequently a 1997 SL500. The eight cylinder gets
slightly better gas mileage. The V8 car gets 18mpg city and 25mpg highway.

In the process of looking at one time I drove a manual SL300. I felt it was
a little doggy; but then I didn't have enough time with it to really get

Ditlow's CAS Wants Cheaper Replacement Keys

The high cost of replacing vehicle keys has drawn the attention of the
Center for Auto Safety, a consumer-defense group headed by Clarence Ditlow.
The CAS charges that modern keys, often embedded with chips, transistors and
multiple functions, have become too costly to replace, with new keys costing
hundreds of dollars-or thousands, if electronics in the car must be replaced
as well. In a petition to the Federal Trade Commission, Reuters reports, the
CAS charged that the auto industry's resistance to releasing computer codes
stored in keys to locksmiths is an unfair trade practice. Reuters adds that
law enforcement officials say current key technology has been one of the
biggest theft deterrents ever made for automobiles, and that manufacturers
are looking for ways to reduce key costs while keeping security levels high.

Jet fuel is NOT 1.84 a gallon. Retail average in the US right now is in this

Jet fuel is basically super purified kerosene for the most part.

2006-02-14 Thread George Gregory
BT Wrong

TPWD incident report pins the blame squarely on Cheney.

http://online.wsj.com/public/article/washington_wire.html
Monday, Feb. 13

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's incident report on Vice President
Dick Cheney's accidental shooting of a hunting partner Saturday pins the
blame largely on Cheney.

In evaluating "contributing factors," the game warden checked off the box:
"Victim covered by shooter who was swinging on game." In its summary, the
report says that 78-year-old Harry Whittington "downed a bird and went to
retrieve it. While he was out of the hunting line another covey was flushed
and Cheney swung on a bird and fired striking Whittington in the face, neck
and chest at approximately 30 yards."

Lydia Saldaña, spokeswoman for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, said
Cheney would also receive a warning citation because he did not have the
proper "upland game bird stamp" required to hunt quail, but that he would
not be fined.

The game warden's report contradicts earlier claims from the White House and
Katharine Armstrong, the owner of the Texas ranch where the shooting
occurred. Earlier Monday, the White House cited Armstrong's view that
Whittington was at fault. "She pointed out that the protocol was not
followed by Mr. Whittington when it came to notifying the others that he was
there," said White House spokesman Scott McClellan.

Some hunting groups chastised the vice president. "It's incumbent upon the
shooter to assess the situation and make sure it's a safe shot," Mark
Birkhauser, president-elect of the International Hunter Education
Association, told the Associated Press.

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times, the paper that first broke the story,
identified the third hunter in the party as Pamela Willeford, the U.S.
Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein and a former chairman of the
Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Cheney's office would not confirm
the report that Willeford was the third hunter. --Christopher Conkey

We could be here debating that point for ever, I could argue that only since

the class system was truly introduce in 94 can a big merc be called an S
class.
A pontoon or finnie is not what you would call a S class but the bigger
limos of that era could be put in the S class category.
However to keep the peace I think we could all agree that the 108/9 is the
first real S class due to it's relatively large production run.

A steaming POS. We had one, for which my dad sold our '65
Mercury Park Lane. The Merc was an American luxury car, and
the first time I rode in the Granada I thought it was broken.
Incredibly noisy when compared to the Merc. I think that
Merc had a 390 in it. I know it was pretty fast, and got
sucky gas mileage. So, in fact, did the Granada. Just about
the same mileage but without any of the acceleration. Handled
worse in the snow, too, and was less roomy.

[MBZ] 2.6 5 speed

2006-01-12 Thread George Gregory
So this evening my children and I went to see a 1989 190E 2.6 5-speed.
Interesting narrative in the eBay ad. The guy works near my indie, so we met
there. My mechanic hates ANY 190, so he wasn¹t very positive. The ad gave
me the impression that this was a Euro, but the seller says its an MBUSA car
that was special ordered by his dad.

http://tinyurl.com/a6ljr

The car has a lot of miles, and more than a few door dings. I neither drive
it or rode in it. The seller ( An army SSgt who just came back from Git-Mo
beating up Arabs to preserve my freedom, for which I thanked him) The car
also has dull paint and some spots where the paint is almost worn through.
The hood pad is missing. The engine is clean.

The car has nice wheels and aftermarket booming stereo. He claims all
records since new, including the window sticker. Overall, cosmetically, it
was okay. I¹d call it very good when you factor in its 17 years old and has
285,000 miles on it.

I told him to get the most he can thru eBay, and if any deal fell through,
call me and we¹ll talk.

After dinner, I get a phone call. ³The eBay price is now $3050. The wife
and I decided if you want it, we¹ll sell it for $3300.²

I told him I¹d let him know.

Anybody want to run a Carfax for me on it?
WDBDA29D9KF601955

That¹s my report and I¹m sticking to it.

Re: [MBZ] Looks like I have a long drive ahead of me.

2006-01-09 Thread George Gregory
It is a wise decision to get the car yourself.
Having lived in Southwest Florida for several years, and having long Florida
ties, I can tell you that there are a lot of scammers in Florida.

I'm sure your seller is honest, but I would have less doubts if you were
buying it from, say the Midwest. But scammers are everywhere.

Check the frappr map for listers along the route:
http://www.frappr.com/benzbunch
 and
http://www.frappr.com/bannedmisfits

Last winter I sold an extra 129 hardtop on eBay to a guy in Miami. He
didn't want to meet me halfway to get the top, so he paid me to deliver it
in March. I asked if I could bring it in March so I could take my
highschool aged son with me. We made a great trip out of it and it only
cost me about $200 out of pocket for a driving trip/bonding session with 15
year old (who had a permit and helped drive)

After we dropped off the hardtop we went on to Key West and attended the
Barrett-Jackson auction in Palm Beach. Also stopped in Orlando.

the car would get on a truck and arrive here in Kansas. I have no

had with unreliable and unethical shipping companies. Plus, if I have

then driving back to Wichita. Long trip. Anybody on the way that might

[MBZ] FYI LT Don

2006-01-01 Thread George Gregory
DATE: December 30, 2005
AD #: 2006-01-51

Emergency airworthiness directive (AD) 2006-01-51 is sent to all owners and
operators of Frakes Aviation (Gulfstream American) Model G-73 (Mallard)
series airplanes, and Model G-73 airplanes that have been converted to have
turbine engines. These airplanes were originally manufactured by Grumman.

Background

On December 19, 2005, the right wing of a Frakes Aviation (Gulfstream
American) Model G-73 (Mallard) airplane separated from the fuselage on
takeoff, which resulted in the airplane impacting the water near Miami
Beach, Florida. The wing separated between the fuselage attachment and the
engine attachment. This twin-engine airplane was manufactured in 1947. This
particular airplane was operated in passenger service and in a salt-water
environment. The airplane had accumulated over 31,000 total flight hours and
over 39,000 total flight cycles. Although the cause of this accident has not
yet been determined by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB),
preliminary indications from the investigation reveal occurrences of fatigue
cracking of a wing spar, skin cracking, and a broken z-stringer. The loss of
the lower skin capability, or the spar and stringer capability, will likely
lead to wing failure. This condition, if not corrected, could result in
structural failure of the wing and loss of control of the airplane.

FAA¹s Determination and Requirements of this AD

We have evaluated all pertinent information and identified an unsafe
condition that is likely to exist or develop on other airplanes of this same
type design. Therefore, we are issuing this AD to prevent structural failure
of the wing and loss of control of the airplane. This AD requires (1) a
detailed visual inspection to detect repairs, cracking, or corrosion of the
wings from wing station (WS) 77L to WS 77R, front spar to rear (main) spar;
(2) removal of repairs, if found, to allow for inspection of the wing
structure underneath the repairs; (3) removal of sealant from the interior
of the wet bays to allow for inspection of the skins, stringers, and both
spars; and (4) repair of any crack or corrosion. The inspection and repair
are required to be done in accordance with a method approved by the FAA.
This AD also requires sending the inspection results (both positive and
negative) to the FAA.

Additional Source of Service Information

Operators should note that Frakes Aviation may be contacted as a source of
preliminary service information as follows: Frakes Aviation, Cleburne
Airport, Route 3, Box 229-B, Cleburne, TX 76031; telephone (817) 556-0700.

Interim Action

This AD is considered to be interim action. The inspection reports that are
required by this AD will enable the FAA to obtainbetter insight into the
nature, cause, and extent of the cracking, and eventually to develop final
action to address the unsafe condition. Frakes Aviation may be contacted as
a source of preliminary service information as follows: Frakes Aviation,
Cleburne Airport, Route 3, Box 229-B, Cleburne, TX 76031; telephone (817)
556-0700.

Frakes Aviation has advised the FAA that it is developing special detailed
(i.e., nondestructive testing) inspection procedures that are expected to be
available within 45 days. You may choose to comply with the interim action
required by this AD if you must fly before the special detailed inspection
becomes available. Otherwise, you may wait for the service information that
is being developed by Frakes Aviation. Once that service information is
available and approved, we anticipate superseding this AD to require
compliance with that information.

Examining the Docket

You may examine the contents of this AD docket on the Internet at
http://dms.dot.gov (on the next business day after we have issued the AD),
or in person at the Docket Management Facility, U.S. Department of
Transportation, 400 Seventh Street SW., room PL-401, on the plaza level of
the Nassif Building, Washington, DC. This docket number is FAA-2005-23440;
the directorate identifier for this docket is 2005-NM-256-AD.

Authority for this Rulemaking

Title 49 of the United States Code specifies the FAA¹s authority to issue
rules on aviation safety. Subtitle I, Section 106, describes the authority
of the FAA Administrator. Subtitle VII, Aviation Programs, describes in more
detail the scope of the Agency¹s authority. We are issuing this rulemaking
under the authority described in Subtitle VII, Part A, Subpart III, Section
44701, ³General requirements.² Under that section, Congress charges the FAA
with promoting safe flight of civil aircraft in air commerce by prescribing
regulations for practices, methods, and procedures the Administrator finds
necessary for safety in air commerce. This regulation is within the scope of
that authority because it addresses an unsafe condition that is likely to
exist or develop on products identified in this rulemaking action.

Determination of Rule¹s Effective Date

This emergency AD is issue

Ectually... The VIN says my carpets are coloured "Mushroom." There is no
factory floor mats called "mushroom."

They have tan, brown, palomino, but no mushroom.

Palomino worked well, if not a shade too bright. But after a few months of
dirty feet, I'm sure they ill turn to a more mushroom tone!

Kaleb,

It would be nice to have a section showing sites on repair articles possibly

broken down by models. That way someone new would access this as a library
of information. You also wouldn't be interfering with any copyright
infringements. Whenever a new site was found by a subscriber it could be
added.

Starting the process of trying to figure out how to create a half way
decent web site and will be needing some ideas as to content. Its
y'alls site really so what do you want to see? Some of the stuff from
mbz.org is up as far as articles go but Im not sure we should be coping
that stuff directly. I dont think its copyrighted since its all just
derived from posts over the years but still probably should. If anybody
has any subjects for articles they would like to see, let me know. Will
probably need volunteers to right up some articles for different
repairs, mods or what not. Probably have a section for list members
pictures, pictures of their cars and that sort of thing. Might also be
nice to include the archives from the old lists if anybody has that
stuff handy. Anyways, just give me your imput and will see what we can
come up with.

G-Wagon beats Afghan bomb
4 lives likely saved by new, tougher armoured vehicle
Three soldiers, reporter, injured in roadside blast
Dec. 13, 2005. 04:34 AM
TERRY PEDWELL
CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA--Three Canadian soldiers and a journalist injured by a bomb in
Afghanistan may well have been killed had it not been for the
light-armoured vehicle they were travelling in, say military experts and
the reporter involved in the blast. "It's lucky they weren't in an
Iltis," said Scott Taylor, editor of /Esprit de Corps/ military
magazine, referring to the open-top jeeps once used by Canada's military
in Afghanistan. The soldiers and a British journalist were injured
yesterday when a roadside bomb exploded near their G-Wagon -- an
enclosed vehicle with armour plating and thick, shock-resistant windows.
One soldier suffered a broken leg, another had a broken ankle and foot.
Military officials believe the bomb was an improvised explosive device.
The blast struck as the Canadians patrolled near the town of Maywand,
about 90 kilometres west of Kandahar, where some 250 Canadian soldiers
run a provincial reconstruction team. The vehicle's front end was
crushed, but the rest, including windows and passenger compartment,
remained intact. "They probably would have been killed" had they been
patrolling in an Iltis, said Taylor. "There's absolutely no protection
on an Iltis whatsoever." An American helicopter evacuated two of the
soldiers to a U.S. field hospital at Kandahar. Col. Steve Bowes,
commander of the Canadian operation in Kandahar, said the third soldier
and the journalist walked away with minor injuries and went back to
work. The military was not releasing any names. Next of kin have been
notified. The soldiers were members of the 3rd battalion, Princess
Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, based in Edmonton, said Capt. Brian
Hillier. The journalist, Tim Albone of Global Radio News, which has 500
independent journalists working worldwide, said he believes the armour
of the Mercedes G-Wagon prevented even worse injuries to himself and the
soldiers. "I'm convinced that is what, and in fact that is what the
soldiers say, saved our lives," Albone told CBC Newsworld. The Defence
Department awarded a $130-million contract to Mercedes-Benz Canada in
2003 for 802 Gelaendewagens, or G-Wagons, and 150 Armour Protection
Systems for the vehicles. The military later bought more of the vehicles
and armour kits, bringing the total to 1,159 by late last year. The
initial order came after two Canadian soldiers died when their Iltis
struck a landmine near Kabul. Sgt. Robert Short and Cpl. Robbie
Beerenfenger were killed instantly on Oct. 2, 2003 while patrolling a
dirt road near Camp Julien, the base camp for Canadians in Afghanistan
until it closed two weeks ago. In another incident, Cpl. Jamie Murphy
died and three soldiers were seriously injured when a suicide bomber
jumped on their Canadian Forces Iltis in January 2004 on a Kabul street.
The aging fleet of Bombardier-made Iltis jeeps had long been criticized
as offering virtually no protection for Canada's soldiers in world
hotspots. While it's not heavily armoured, the G-Wagon was welcomed by
the military as a vehicle that could better protect soldiers, even if it
didn't lend itself well to Canada's so-called "hearts-and-minds"
strategy of winning support of the locals in Afghanistan by being
approachable during patrols. The G-Wagon is designed to protect soldiers
from small arms fire, hand grenades as well as anti-personnel land
mines, and military officials say they are pleased with how the vehicle
has performed under fire."We have a great deal of confidence in this
vehicle," said Maj. Daryl Morrell.

I was handed a card for this club while at the Flying J truckstop in

Sullivan MO. (about 65 miles west of downtown St. Louis on I-44)

About a year or more ago, I met a fellow at the Sullivan airport with

a W123. He also informed me of the existance of this club.

http://club123d.org

There seems to be a lot of words but not much information. Puzzling.

It so happens that I have more than a 1/2 dozen W123 diesels - but I

_still_ haven't figured out why I would want to belong to a "Exclusive

club for W123 chassis cars"!!

Silver membership is $25 per car per year.

Here's another humorous page - for next years W123 car show!

Maybe I'm an anti-social, stuckup hillbilly, but I'd rather send my

$25 to Rusty and actually _get_ something for my money!! Besides, I

don't have time to teach someone else all the stuff I've learned from

this list and it's ancestors...

Oh, and those two guys I meet who are so eager to promote their club

were _very_ eager to have me join. Smells fishy to me.

I'm wondering if this seller is a scam artist, for several reasons. I wrote
him thru eBay to ask questions. He replied outside of eBay with a form
letter which did not address any of my questions. (the letter is copied
below) He's been an eBay member for a couple of years, but has no feedback.

In his form letter, he mentions an escrow type service thru eBay, but as I
understand it eBay does not have its own escrow service. And the pricing he
mentions is out of line for that car. Also, in the letter he says he is the
original owner, which contradicts what he says in the eBay listing.
