Re: [MBZ] ATF vs. Power Steering Fluid
DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO SUBSTITUTE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID FOR POWER STEERING FLUID IN YOUR CAR UNLESS SPECIFIED BY YOUR VEHICLE'S MANUFACTURER! Unless specified is the operative phrase. Up to the mid 1980s (Marshall Booth used to say on cars with v-belt driven steering pumps, but I think it applies to the earliest W201 also), you'd use MB spec 236.3 ATF, or you could be like me and stick Dexron III in it. (Mobil One ATF if I have it handy) http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/236.3_en.html On newer cars with serpentine belt drive, consult the manual for the specification. I don't think generic PS fluid is going to be the best stuff for the job. I'd look it up for you if I had my W124 handy, but all I've got with me is my S210 which takes 344.0 SLS fluid for steering and SLS, and SLS equipped 210s are about the only cars that take that stuff. Ugh...Well, someone had time to black out the grill, time to install aftermarket wheels, time to install a spoiler, time to install clear marker lights time to install an aftermarket warm air intake (not sure how they figure air drawn from under the hood is cooler). Yep, it's far enough from the radiator to call it a warm air intake. Sometimes (not usually on mbz diesels) you see them directly behind the radiator, or inches away from the exhaust manifold. I call those hot air intakes. The odd part is the car came with a very effective intake system pulling cold air directly from outside the fender. Not to mention the engine probably won't go another 200k miles without a decent air filter on it. I asked him about the Becker and the 'factory cold air intake system'. What's surprising to me is that the 1997 Oldsmobile is running slightly negative fuel trim on this crap (the feedback loop is reducing fuel injection from baseline programming). Re: [MBZ] Current diesel cars/suvs available for 2014 MY
i seem to recall that back in the day diesel was around the same price or less than regular and now it is always sold as a premium. Back in the day, cars got 8-18 mpg, and for every gallon of gasoline, you had to get rid of x amount of diesel and y amount of propane that came in the crude oil along with the gasoline. Now the refineries have the ability to break down the heavy molecules to make more gas out of a barrel of crude, so selling a gallon of diesel means you can't make 1.x gallons of gas out of it. Fuels are being sold by the BTU now. (I really miss 50 cent a gallon propane and cheaper than regular diesel.) Re: [MBZ] Obummercare caused my benefits to be canceled
I too have an individual plan via AARP and Aetna. Aetna has already advised me that I can keep my current plan (not the greatest), but they won't know what it will cost until January. AND that if I cancel it for a gov't exchange plan (which I don't know what it will cost), I won't be able to get it again because the plan will no longer be offered here in Georgia. They really won't tell you the cost of January's coverage until January? The deadline to enroll in the exchange for January 1 is December 15. You have until the end of March to enroll in the exchange, so it sounds like you're stuck buying January coverage at a mystery price from Aetna, or signing up for dual coverage in January and canceling one when you know the pricing. BTW, is there any way to get your current coverage without handing a nice fat commission to the Democratic party lobbying arm of AARP? Those bastards used member money to lobby members to vote against their beliefs. The good news is that with Obamacare's ban on age based price discrimination, and requirement that the young sign up to subsidize it, you should be seeing lower prices in the exchange and in your current plan, if there are any young people in your current plan. Her new silver 1978 Corvette was sitting at a stop sign, and a school bus failed to swing wide enough while making a left turn and ran the back wheels across its nose. OK, so Stauer isn't worth the money even at $99. Who does make a decent watch for under $100? Citizen? Seiko? Mechanical? Seiko 5 has been a good buy since the Vietnam war days. Orient Watch too, they're still made in Japan AFAIK, while the cheap Seikos aren't any more. I've got an unusual Orient automatic that I bought direct from Orient USA and never wore, would send it to you for $50 if I can find it. If you want something unusual, I'll let you have my 1970s bullhead Citizen flyback chrono for $100. It was a cheapo restoration from a watch shop in the Philippines, with replica bracelet, dial and hands, and they just gave it a spray wash and lube instead of taking it apart to clean and lube it, but it looks and runs decent. The honest Chinese stuff like Alpha is easily worth $50-75, I don't know what Alphas sell for now. Bagelsport, MQJ, or whatever names (other than Rolex) they're using now, are a bargain for $25 or less. A few years ago I bought a couple of MQJ Submariners and a variety of Bagelsports for $10-13 each on eBay. The bracelets, especially on the Submariners and the Daytona, were worth more than I paid. The best running of the lot is the one Rolex they sent me when I bought a Bagelsport. That illegal POS kept to less than one second a day if I left it on my wrist 24 hours a day, gained a second or so overnight if I took it off and let it cool down. The week I only took it off to shower, I think it lost 4 seconds all week. Quartz really opens up the possibilities under $100. I got a Seiko chrono for about $70 on a daily deal site a few years back, and you sometimes see the Citizen solar/capacitor powered (Ecodrive) watches under $100. There are some military style Chinese quartz watches on nylon straps that are good deals for $15. I have one in khaki I'd part with if you want. It doesn't matter. I wear a digital Timex when I'm at home working in the yard or on cars. On job interviews I wear a '60s Seiko Sportsmatic 5 mechanical. I'd like to have something to fit in between: classy-looking, simple, but that won't crap out in a few months (as the Casio quartz watch I bought for $30 on sale at Wal-Mart did). You like divers? Used to be able to get a Mako from OrientUSA for about $80 with a 50% off coupon, don't know what they cost now but 30% off coupons are common now. http://forums.watchuseek.com/f71/official-orient-mako-club-568233.html I don't know if Gary sold all his stuff when he moved to FL, but it sounds like I should go through my 'seemed like a good idea at the time' selection of new watches and find something for you. I've got a diver styled Pulsar quartz alarm chrono with pepsi (blue/red) dive wheel and Seiko 1/5 second movement on black rubber. Probably what you were aiming for when you bought the Casio. I think it's this one, but I paid less than half of that for it. IIRC the alarm doesn't work on mine, probably need to take the back off and make sure the speaker makes contact. http://www.amazon.com/B001L1RZH That Orient I mentioned would probably replace the 5 as your interview watch. It's stainless case, brown sunburst dial, I think it's on brown leather, with an unusual day/date complication. Instead of saying SUN-MON-TUE on the day wheel, says SUN-MON-TUE around the dial and the day wheel shows a red bar next to the appropriate day. The date wheel is the usual 1-31 numbers. I really like my black Seiko SND-195 1/20 second quartz chronograph for all-around wear. In fact, it's my avatar at watchuseek. I bought a slightly dressier white one with the same movement, SND-217, but never wore it. What do you think, Gary, $80-100 for a new SND on bracelet? After they could tell I knew what I was talking about and I have all the same diagnostic equipment they had they dropped the issue. I hate dealers. Reminds me of the time I helped a friend drop off a F250 6.9 at the dealer to have the control pressures checked in the transmission. They called up the next day and said the truck wouldn't start, so they needed $300 or something for new batteries before they'd do any other work. I drove out there, popped the hood to make sure his both his 3 month old Exides were still in it, and saw a loose wire next to the IP. So I plugged in the ignition signal wire at the fuel shutoff solenoid on the IP, hopped in the truck and it started right up, didn't even crank slowly. I drove it to the shop door and told them to quit messing around and do the job that was on the work order. I didn't mention to them that I knew they sabotaged it to keep it from starting. Obviously the shutoff wire was connected when I drove the truck in the day before. So there's no point in stocking parts because there are so many cars that need the parts? Makes as much sense as the mayor of Stuttgart wanting to ban motor vehicles two days a week. According to my local firearms instructor (who is a cop and also a firearms instructor for his department), most cops are not particularly good shots. They have so much other crap they have to do that for most good enough is good enough when it comes to qualifying. The percentage of cops that ever fire their weapon for real is quite small. But it's a different story for aggressive enforcement teams. Yeah, the death squads are expected to actually hit family pets when they shoot at them. The rest of the cops, well, one hit on target and two hits on bystanders or other cops per 17 shot magazine seems to be the standard performance. Looks like a 55 gallon drum of 'diesel exhaust fluid' is about $150-200. Mitch. Uh, oh. No thanks. Gerry Snip.Compared to the gas-powered Cruze, you also lose a couple cubic feet of rear cargo space thanks to a 17-liter diesel emission fluid tank. That urea fluid, which helps put the clean in clean diesel, will need to be refilled at least every 10,000 miles.snip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Next, is 20k people really a small town these days? I am pretty sure we are still under 5k by a long shot downtown Watkins Glen. My home town, Burdett, heck, maybe 1k people tops. We all leave the keys in cars around here at home. The door on my house has not been locked in 20 years. I am so glad to live in a REAL small town. At least one of my small town high school teachers didn't believe in locked doors. With the number of kids visiting his house over the years, hundreds of people must have known it. Yet no home invasions ever, AFAIK. He left the garage wide open, with a message board on the door from the garage to the house, so I never saw a reason to go in if nobody was home. He didn't leave keys in cars though. I never lock my cars, unless I park at Walmart or go to the city, but I pocket the key. Re: [MBZ] What is it with Russians looking for cheap car with big boot?
Huh, wasn't there talk of $2k being good value for a second hand Diesel engine a while back? This is a OM606 engined car? Perhaps someone buy this and Wiltons 126 and make a 300SD with a 606 motor? 1. An engine donor car is generally worth quite a bit less than the pulled engine on a pallet. I'm not entirely sure why, as the salvage value on the chassis covers the cost to pull the engine, you're sure to get all the necessary ancillary bits when you buy the whole car, and you get to hear it run and see the oil pressure etc. 2. Capital idea, but they're sort of in opposite corners of a rather large country. Engine in NW corner, chassis on the east side south of center. When petrol was $1.50 a gallon it would have been a major undertaking. Now it's just not feasible to bring the two together. Perhaps if somebody in Wilton's neighborhood wanted to fly out to Clay, pull whatever he needed, strap it to a pallet and ship it home... i always have to have rear wheels built due to my girth. first one i built was a 48 spoke one like tandem wheel, but spaced at 135mm rather than 145. external gears. the second was an ordinary 36 spoke hub but i used 12 gauge spokes instead of 14, with shimano nexus 3 speed hub and and a weinmann rim that the BMX kids seem to like The strength in a wheel is from tension in the spokes. Durability comes from having enough stretch in the spokes to reach that tension that they maintain as close to constant tension as possible as the wheel turns 'round, and from proper relief of internal stress in the spokes when building the wheel. Last I knew (a long, long time ago) a lot of bike shop mechanics were in the habit of building wheels without enough spoke tension. The 48 spokes might have been on the right track, if they were thin enough to have some decent stretch in them. 15ga spokes would be more than strong enough for a 48 spoke wheel, probably more than strong enough for a 36 spoke wheel. If you add tension until failure and it's the rim that fails first, there's no reason to go thicker on the spokes. Can't hear pump over traffic noise when I jumper across the pump relay terminals, and don't have pressure to the fuel rail after I jump the relay. Chrysler made the right decision during their last negotiation rounds with the union. They gave the retiree plan to UAW along with a pile of cash and made the cost the responsibility of UAW. The other benefit to this trade is that Chrysler retirees will continue to receive medical benefits if Chrysler goes under. You really expect those benefits to be there for your wife? My expectations: 1) There wasn't enough money to start with. That's why it was such a savings to Chrysler to do it this way. 2) This too small pool of cash will be mismanaged, thereby making it smaller . 3) UAW leadership will find a way to charge the fund lots of fees for mismanaging it, which will make it still smaller. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

They go bang (unlike CCI mini caps, which go pfft), but there's no supersonic crack echoing back from the woods like I'd get with full power 22LR.
Re: [MBZ] Air guns
I'd say #2 is Ah, just making sure. (After he gropes Fran, a tall, masculine woman) Yes - that was my favorite line in the movie! I really liked though, when the Aussie hero, Crocodile Dundee said to the thug, That's not a knife, THIS is a knife!
Re: [MBZ] What would you do if diesel/gas cost $10/g
What are good, in-expensive, bolt action 22RF rifles to look for? My pump action Remington is nice for hunting, but the chamber if not readily accessible. The days when you could drop $29.88 at a Kmart for a .22 bolt Marlin are long gone. This thing looks just like my Brother's $30 rifle from the early 1970's: http://personalsecurityzone.com/cgi-win/order/prodlist.exe/PSZ/?Template=ProdDetail.htmProductID=19729 And this is more affordable: http://www.hr1871.com/Firearms/Rifles/sportster.aspx ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] OT Seating A New Lawn Tractor Tire
Keep cranking that ratchet strap. The more you tighten it, the wider the beads get. I use a locking tire chuck so I can wiggle the tire on the rim while the air is rushing in. Sometimes it helps to remove the valve core so the air flows faster. Are you using the same size tire that the factory intended for that rim? If all else fails, inflating an inner tube inside the tire is a great way to spread the beads.
