2014-04-16 Thread WILTON

WILTON'S 124 EVAPECTOMY OF JUNE '08 - MINOR "STICKING" POINTS & SOME TIPS

PREPARATION/PLANNING:

I spent at least two weeks preparing and planning for the operation. I
obtained the MB service CD's, divided the job into manageable sections such
as, speakers, glove box, duct registers/vents, instrument cluster, under
dash panels, master/ignition switch/lock, lower center console, ash tray,
radio, climate control, upper console switches, console side panels, console
carpet, etc. Any large project is really done ONE step at time, whether it
be working through a calculus problem, building an engine, building a house,
a Boeing 747, a space shuttle or an aircraft carrier, it's done ONE step at
a time. This is certainly no different - it's merely a little more than the
usual amount of VERY SIMPLE stuff. I looked up the appropriate jobs on the
CD, printed them out and built a sizable book of instructions and info about
the undertaking. The CD's, though, are not designed to give complete,
detailed procedures for R&R. Quite the contrary, they're actually very
brief, and seem to be designed more for the experienced MB technician. I
also found lots of good info on mercedesshop.com and, of course
"conversations" with the very knowledgeable guys on okiebenz.com to fill in
lots of details not found in the CD's. From these two additional sources I
added lots of printouts, including photos, to the notebook. Several
extensive searches on mercedeshop.com (now peachparts.com) were very
productive. Some VERY helpful sections of mercedesshop.com (peachparts.com)
were Shop Forum, DIY Articles, and DIY Links.
Peachparts.com/Wikka/W124Stereo and "Instrument Cluster Removal", and the
Shop Forum article "124 Dash Removal (Sans Photos)", and many others were
very helpful. By the time I actually started the disassembly, I was very
well prepared and had very few surprises throughout the operation. Those
few were VERY minor in nature. A plus for me, of course, was that I didn't
have to hurry - no job to go to, no deadline and another car in the yard.

TOOLS:

Other than three very simple tools I made or modified, all of my tools for
the operation are the common tools I've used for many years: Small to
midsize flat screwdrivers mainly for careful prying, small to midsize
Phillips screwdrivers (at least 1 with magnetic tip), ice pick/awl, 1/4"
ratchet drive handle with short and long extension shafts, 8 mm and 10 mm
sockets for 1/4" ratchet, 1/4" screwdriver-like nut driver, 8 mm and 10 mm
box end and open end wrenches, needle nose pliers, channel lock pliers,
knife or diagonal cutters mainly for clipping tiewraps/zipties, butter
knife-like tool for releasing side panels on center console,
tiewraps/zipties to replace several cut during disassembly and to secure
several wires etc., out of the way for re-insertion of box, two instrument
cluster extraction tools (same tool extracts radio front - my extraction
tools made from coat hangers worked great), flashlight, 3 or 4 ziploc bags
for screws/nuts, masking tape (painter's blue tape may be better - my
masking tape was too good; 'tough to remove), rag/towel to protect steering
wheel and column during inst cluster extraction, several (~6) small bottles
of different bright color artists or modelers paints with small brush (don't
spill paint in car - I did not, BTW - JUST DON'T!), paper towels, digital
camera.

HOMEMADE TOOLS:

I made two instrument cluster extraction tools from coat hangers: on one end
of a piece of coat hanger about 8" to 10" long, sharply bend a 3/16" length
of it at 95 to 100 degrees to the main shaft; form a circle on the other end
big enough to grasp and manipulate the tool well.

Rivet pin insertion tool: Another tool I made/modified helped make
reinsertion of several plastic rivet pins for actuator rods on the
evaporator box very easy, a very simple job that was much tougher with
regular pliers, etc. I taped a 10 mm hex nut to the inside of one jaw of my
channel-lock pliers near the outer end of the jaws. I simply placed the
base of the nut against the inside of the jaw and wrapped a piece of masking
tape around the jaw and nut to hold the nut in place, then punched a hole
through the tape into the hole in the nut. This made a very simple
pliers-type tool to press the rivets in place by allowing the tip of the
rivet to go into the hole in the nut as I pressed the pin in place with the
other jaw of the pliers pressing against the other end of the rivet pin.

Console sides removal tool: MB service CD job 68-205 describes an
extraction/release tool for the clips between the console carpet and the
plastic sides - a metal bar 30 mm wide, 2 mm thick, 135 degree bend at one
end, 120 degree bend at other end, etc. I made a tool from a butter knife
(wife doesn't know yet. BTW, I used a stainless steel one, not a silver
one) by bending the handle to about 135 degrees. I could grasp the handle
wit

Nice to hear it's still working well!

I have discovered another cause of "poor cooling" after switching to
R134a -- a bad monovalve. Drove my mother's TE to work yesterday to pick
up a used TV antenna (which didn't arrive as it turned out, long story),
and found that just like my second 300D, it blows hot air forever with the
AC compressor not running. It also fails to heat well, same cause I
suspect. A monovalve that doesn't close will add enough heat at idle to
make the car too warm -- just as if there wasn't enough cooling capacity,
since there isn't with added heat!

Well the fun part is that the parts car has been sitting for a while,
and as I am under the car removing bolts, I tend to leave them laying on
the driveway under the car, then they get lost. It will be a mess

Well the engine is out. Just need to pull the car its going in around
and finish pulling that engine out, which it almost is out. Then swap
the turbos and put it in the car. Finding all the little nuts and bolts
will be lots of fun!! Then of course hooking everything back up. Much
easier coming out than going in

You'd have to install some extra software, and then print to a PDF
printer. If you want to set that up we'll gladly help you out with it..
Or you can just send it out in whatever format you like, and we'll take
care of putting it in the different formats. Sending it as plain text
in an email is fine with me. That is ultimately the most portable
solution. :)

Of course. Some of us do not (and will not) have any Microsoft
content in their homes, nor anything intended to be compatible

Yes, if you have the full Acrobat suite, which is not common
(nor free).

It depends upon what you mean by, "better." It's more portable across
different operating systems and doesn't need proprietary software to be
displayed correctly. Generally, though, the receiver cannot add his own
notes or modify it. I had thought that would be unnecessary, given the
care you devoted to the task.

I have it as a word document right now. I can easily send it as an e-mail
attachment to the list or to individuals as desired. Is it better as a PDF?
Can receiver add his own notes and/or modify it as necessary if it's a PDF?
If ya want it as a PDF, remind me how to change it from doc to PDF. When I
select "save as," I don't see PDF on the list of choices.

Re: [MBZ] 124 evapectomy

2008-06-20 Thread Loren Faeth
no, that is easy. you only need to remove the compressor to replace
the 4 orings between the compressor itself and the 90 degree manifold
on top that the hose manifold attaches to. You only nee steps 1, 12
and 13. to change the hoses, but you also have to take loose any
other mounting points on the hoses, the hose ends at the other end.

At 08:00 PM 6/19/2008, you wrote:

Just the retainer bolt and the bottom rear compressor mount bolt.
The real fun comes when try to remove the pipe to condensor fitting
-- it's exposed, and usually quite stuck, and also hard to get
wrenches on.

Re: [MBZ] 124 evapectomy

Before you replace the evaporator, I'd replace ALL the o-rings in all
the fittings and on the expansion valve. o-rings soaked in mineral
oil and then exposed to R143a seem to rapidly become rock hard and
leak, often slowly enough there is little or no oil trace, but you
will slowly loose charge AND eat the compressor from the water that
leaks in.

There are quite a few -- one large one on each end of the compressor
hose set, 5 or seven on the condenser and receiver/dryer, and four on
the expansion valve. All the liquid side ones are the same size, I
think, and MUST fit into the fitting easily -- the usual assorment
has quite a few that are too large although they fit the hose well,
and they cut and leak.

You can use that, or a plain allen, Just make SURE it's bottomed in
the screw head!

I've replaced a couple, it's not that bad unless those two screws are
seized or you strip the socket out.

Not a snowball's chance in the bad place I'll ever get the one out of
the wrecked car though -- same story as the brake booster. All
squished together.

Re: [MBZ] 124 evapectomy

2008-06-19 Thread Wilton Strickland
Freon manifold - I'm talking about the two big rubber and steel pipes/tubes
attached to the backside of a raised attachment on top of the compressor -
one goes forward to the condenser; the other goes rearward and connects to
another pipe/tube that connects to the evaporator between the firewalls.
Compressor end of the pipes/manifold in question on my 87 300D sure looks
like it's attached to that raised attachment on top of the compressor by one
bolt (13 mm, I think, but not certain right now) on a common flange between
the ends of the two pipes that make up the manifold. The bolt I'm talking
about is easily reached from behind the compressor with a socket on a short
extension on a ratchet. 'You sure you need to REMOVE the compressor just to
change the two pipes (with common flange at compressor)?

Re: [MBZ] 124 evapectomy

2008-06-19 Thread Loren Faeth
ok, Now I think I understand your previous question about how long it
takes to change the freon manifold. At the time I could not figure
out what you meant. The manifold on top of the compressor is not
rocket science to change. It is a bit of a PITA because you have to
take the compressor off to get to it.

I just took out the compressor on my 87 300D, cleaned it, took off
the manifold and replaced the o-rings. It takes 6 orings. 4 between
the compr. and minifold and 2 between the manifold and the hoses. The
orings are a pain to find. I ordered a set from Rusty and I only got
two. The orings in the manifold to compressor side were fairly new
and green, and the compressor had an MB part number and a reman
sticker on it, so I ifgured it was pretty recent. since the green
orings still had some life to them I put a little silicone permatex
on them and put it back together.

1. pull the capscrew holding the manifold hose to the compressor
2. loosen the belt tensioner
3. pull the 4 bolts through the pump holding the compressor to the engine
4. unplug the wiring harness on top
5. remove the compressor. (I did all this from the topside on the 124 300D)
6. clean compressor and remove the manifold.
7. install new orings and replace manifold (4 orings, green ones if
you want to use 134a)
8. put the compressor back in place
9. plug in the wiring harness. Be sure you get it on the right
pins. you can plug it in with 2 pins in and one pin out!
10. put the bolts back in. Tighten bolts
11. remove the shock absorber bolt of the tensioner so the belt will
slide on (OM603, for others: YMMV) put the belt on.
12. check to see the manifold sealing surfaces are clean, install orings
13. install hose manifold to compressor
14. put the boltback in the tensioner shock absorber
15. tension belt and replace bolt and nut.
16. Start engine and check belt, etc.

The whole job only took me an hour and 45 min from getting out tools
to sitting down to the computer after cleaning up and putting
everything away. Add another hour for going to the DIY carwash and
cleaning as much of the compressor and the underhood area as I could.

Hope this helps!

I am guessing that a large part of the reason this car ended up in a
series of auctions is that the evaporator leaks. I have found no
other reason why the refrigerant leaks, but i have not used a leak
detector, because I don't have one. After checking out the
compressor orings, I have this sinking feeling.

Heat and humidity was worst part of it all, but fan helped that prob

How much did I make an hour? I don't know and don't care. The value of
knowing that I could do it and have done it is worth much more than any
money that I may have "saved." Oh, and whatever I may have paid somebody to

Good thing the new evaporator has a new expansion valve on it, eh?

Actually, they aren't THAT bad so long as you are very careful to get
the allen wrench properly seated in the two screws that hold the
valve to the evaporator.

I'll be challanging myself with this over the weekend or early next
week, as I plan to attempt a flush of my evaporator and want to
change the o-rings in any case -- new compressor and receiver/dryer
with a filter in the hose set -- don't see much point in NOT changing
all the o-rings at the same time!

With any luck, I'll have a working ACC in a few days.

All 3. XH-7 and XH-9 are used by most R134a systems. XH-5 is used for
R12. It's relatively cheap stuff. Also safer than having exothermic
reactions in potentially flammable environments. R134a is flammable
under the right conditions - when under pressure in the presence of
oxygen.

Absorbent desiccants cannot be reused. Adsorbent ones can. Most use
XH-5, XH-7 or XH-9, all of which can be at least partially restored by
pulling a vacuum on the system. They are made from sodium and/or
potassium aluminosilicate which physically traps water molecules
rather than chemically combining with them.

BTW, I've read a coupla reports that the ducts on each side of the center
console were very hard to R&R. I found them very EASY to do. Each is held
by 2 screws - one on the floor about midway the duct, the other on top of
the duct under front edge of seat. Remove those 2 screws and pull up on the
end of the duct under front edge of the seat, and duct detaches from the
section of duct under seat. Then unplug top end of duct from evap box. On
re-installation, plug top end of duct into evap box, and push/jiggle rear
end of the duct downward back into place (meshed) with duct under front edge
of seat and re-install the 2 screws. Ya don't need to loosen the duct under
the seat.

Get yourself a magnet and sweep the rug with it.

[MBZ] 124 evapectomy

2008-06-17 Thread Wilton Strickland
Here are a coupla post op photos of interior.

Still to do: Hook up water and Freon pipes and R&R dryer and compressor
manifold.

'Had only one little mishap that I know of so far: When I was trying to
press one of the little spring clips (~1/2" X 1/4") back in place on outside
of the evap/heat exchanger box, my thumb slipped, and clip went flying;
'heard it hit the carpet (real Persian rug) somewhere behind me. 'Looked
for it quite a while, but the color patterns on the rug make it hard to find
little things like that. Sometimes it helps to lay a flashlight down on the
rug and sweep it slowly back and forth like a RADAR beam to be able to find
something like that, but no luck this time. 'Probably "find" it when I hear
it in the vacuum cleaner hose. 'Used a tie-wrap/zip-tie in place of the
clip.

Usually takes about 5 hours after I get there. 1 hr to get the stuff ready
and 'bout 4 hrs for the infusion. 'Been getting 80 grams in 10% solution

When in doubt, have it X-rayed. I've sprained many an ankle and NEVER heard
any "snap, crackle, and pop". Both ankles I've fractured had
odd/frightening sounds. Neither ankle was diagnosed later that day and I
was lucky neither needed surgery when I finally made it to the doctor.
