[MBZ] A/C question

2013-06-24 Thread Hans Neureiter
Has anyone experienced a noisy XP valve?
Ever since I replaced the compressor, drier and XP valve there is an
intermittent noise coming from under the dash when the A/C is on.Sounds
like a high note on a saxophone.
It is not the blower. Sometimes when I shut the car off it whistles for
nearly a minute til it fades out.

Only problem with that is you need closer to 30" to get any moisture out
of the system.

Engine vacuum only pulls down to like half atmospheric (13-14" maybe),
not really enough to do any good in an AC system.

I changed one on my 300SD and it was relatively easy, on the 420SEL there
was an extra brace and it took half the day. If I had to do it again I would
remove the dash pad first.

Also to vacuum out the system I have used a vacuum line from the engine.
That is start engine connect AC gauge to intake manifold through vacuum line
and let engine run (assuming gas engine). However I now have a cheap vacuum
pump powered from air compressor that I got from harbor freight for under
$20.

Depends on which car. The expansion valve on the 124 is between the
firewall behind and inboard of the brake booster. On the 126 I expect
it's still behind and above the brake pedal (and an absolute BEAST to

Vacuum, then recharge. The old-school way to recharge without
a vacuum pump was to blow a can or so of refrigerant through the
system, scavenging any air with it. You DO NOT want any air
left in there. It ruins the performance, and can be downright
hazardous depending on the refrigerant and/or oil.

Assuming you are going to re-install the same type of refrigerant that
was in the system, you need to pull a vacuum & hold that vacuum for at
least an hour. Then you can charge the system.

On the old cars (123/116 at least) it's under
the go pedal. (it's the tranny kickdown switch)
A little extra wiring and it can double as the
A/C cutout switch. Some wags have mentioned that
it's pointless to use a throttle cutout on a 240D,
because it would prevent the A/C from ever operating ;-)

Ah! I love good news. Thanks guys.

Now It's off to get some touch-up paint. There's a shop real near my house
that brings a camera or scanner of some sort out to the car and reads your
paint, then mixes some up. It worked well enough for my Saab, so I'm gonna
try it for this one.

Hello Brian,

a

compressor is free-wheeling and without the compressor locking in the hp
loss would be extremely small - I doubt you;d notice any difference at
all.

As an owner of a sub-sonic 240D I am experienced at turning the fan or AC

off when starting from a dead stop - or when I (Gasp!) might attempt to

having zero traffic in the distance. It doesn't happen often. ;-)

Good luck -

Where might that switch be located?

Sounds like a good thing to have.

Some cars have a WOT switch that cuts out the compressor.
You could modify yours to do the same, if it's not there
already. The switch is already in place.

Question is: Does running the thing without any freon in the system
harm the

compressor?

It would, except there's a pressure safety switch to prevent this.
A York compressor will tolerate it just fine, early systems using
that compressor don't have the switch. York compressors make fine
on-board air compressors, because they have an oil-filled crankcase.

Also: How much benefit do y'all think I'd get from removing the A/C
belt (in

terms of fuel mileage and power)?

Negligible. You could probably double the effect by entirely removing
the thing so as to save carrying the extra weight around. Model this
by carrying a sandbag in the trunk to see how much your mileage and
acceleration suffers.
