[MBZ] A/C question
Has anyone experienced a noisy XP valve? Ever since I replaced the compressor, drier and XP valve there is an intermittent noise coming from under the dash when the A/C is on.Sounds like a high note on a saxophone. It is not the blower. Sometimes when I shut the car off it whistles for nearly a minute til it fades out. -- Hans Neureiter, Katy, TX '82 300SD '01 VW New Beetle 1.9L TDI ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Only problem with that is you need closer to 30" to get any moisture out of the system. ---Robert Trampas wrote: > A proper running car will pull to about 19" at idle which on the hot days of > summer around here it is pretty good. > > Trampas > > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > On Behalf Of Rich Thomas > Sent: Wednesday, August 22, 2007 3:19 PM > To: Mercedes Discussion List > Subject: Re: [MBZ] A/C Question > > Engine vacuum only pulls down to like half atmospheric (13-14" maybe), > not really enough to do any good in an AC system. > > --R > > Trampas wrote: > >> I changed one on my 300SD and it was relatively easy, on the 420SEL there >> was an extra brace and it took half the day. I changed one on my 300SD and it was relatively easy, on the 420SEL there was an extra brace and it took half the day. If I had to do it again I would remove the dash pad first. Also to vacuum out the system I have used a vacuum line from the engine. That is start engine connect AC gauge to intake manifold through vacuum line and let engine run (assuming gas engine). A 123 is easy. It's the filling in a foam sandwich accessible either thru the glove box or if not there for sure behind the lower panel below the box. Ah! I love good news. Thanks guys. Now It's off to get some touch-up paint. There's a shop real near my house that brings a camera or scanner of some sort out to the car and reads your paint, then mixes some up. Re: [MBZ] A/C question
Question is: Does running the thing without any freon in the system harm the compressor? It would, except there's a pressure safety switch to prevent this. A York compressor will tolerate it just fine, early systems using that compressor don't have the switch. York compressors make fine on-board air compressors, because they have an oil-filled crankcase. Also: How much benefit do y'all think I'd get from removing the A/C belt (in terms of fuel mileage and power)? Negligible. You could probably double the effect by entirely removing the thing so as to save carrying the extra weight around. Model this by carrying a sandbag in the trunk to see how much your mileage and acceleration suffers. -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] A/C question
As an owner of a sub-sonic 240D I am experienced at turning the fan or AC to off when starting from a dead stop - or when I (Gasp!) might attempt to pass someone - obviously they'd have to be going *very* slow, going downhill and having zero traffic in the distance. It doesn't happen often. ;-) Some cars have a WOT switch that cuts out the compressor. You could modify yours to do the same, if it's not there already. The switch is already in place. -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] A/C question
Hello Brian, Your AC compressor will not run with out any (or low) Freon in it. There's a low pressure switch that detects the low pressure situation and prevents it coming on. As far as gaining those elusive 500 hp in your 240D, the AC compressor is free-wheeling and without the compressor locking in the hp loss would be extremely small - I doubt you;d notice any difference at all.
