Re: [MBZ] Advance auto parts

2020-05-22 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Hydro boost is orders of magnitude better than vacuum boost. Applied brake
pressures with hydro boost is much higher than peddle feel.

I had one failure with the system when the brake master cylinder started
leaking, brake fluid corss contaminated the hydroboost unit the power
steering pump, and the power steering box.
I discovered I had an issue in the loaded F450 [1 ton power stroke Ford] in
rush hour traffic, when the lower seal of the power steering box blew out
of the housing from swelling due to brake fluid... lost all the power
steering fluid, brakes, and steering in about 1 block and one stop light...
exciting moments...
Lesson learned there was to keep a watch on master cylinder condition,
always.

I haven't seen a system fail either. But if the belt fails, or
the pump seizes both steering and brakes will not work as expected.

I like it. I think it's a whole lot better than vacuum boost -
especially for a car that doesn't have inherent engine vacuum.

For either engines without vacuum, or for applications that might
require more than 15 psi for brake boost, GM makes a hydraulic
brake booster. It uses a spring charged accumulator and the power
steering pump to store a whole lot of force to assist with brake
application.

The light duty suburban and pickups might have had vacuum brake
boosters driven by the mechanical vacuum pump, but the 3/4 ton and
larger diesels, and more than 1 ton gasoline I think all got
hydroboost. At least through the 1990s.

It's a good system. Simple, rugged, reliable, and the driver will
know there is a loss of hydraulic pressure because the steering
will be effected.

Maybe the fact that brakes and steering both change if pressure is
lost could be considered poor design...

I don't think the FLAPS provide any warranty. The manufacturer provides
the warranty. The biggest issue for the store, I would guess, is the
paperwork to deal with the customer and then the parts supplier. In my
experience, most stores are pretty good. I had issues with starters for
a Nissan Maxima and they gave me several in a row. It turned out it was
not the fault of the manufacturer as there was a relay on the vehicle
that was causing the starter not to disengage. After several starters, I
asked for a different brand, suspecting that there was a bad batch of
starters on their shelves. The new one of a different brand came with a
printed page inside telling me that if there was an issue such as I was
experiencing, I should look for a problem with the relay. That was very
helpful and I do hope the other manufacturer has figured that  out too
and included a similar message. I had to go to the dealer for the relay
and the parts guys there told me that they had never heard of such a
problem. They did not stock the relay and it had to be ordered in so
maybe it was an unusual thing or the car was just old enough to start
causing that problem.

Reminds me of the time I bought a pair of KYB adjustable struts.
A couple years later one leaked. A local parts store that stocked KYB replaced
them.
A couple years later one leaked. KYB sent me a pair of GR2s via the parts store
(they didn't make the adjustables any more) and told them I was never getting
any more. The nonadjustable struts never failed, but I never bought KYB again.

Re: [MBZ] Advance auto parts

2019-06-16 Thread MG via Mercedes
Scan the receipt into the computer to make sure you
have it when the time comes. Those receipts have a
habit of fading to invisibility in time. They used to
do unlimited replacements. I recall the Jeep water pump
I replaced 3-4 times in the 20 years we had it. The
last time they said there was no more replacement cause
lifetime replacement was 1 replacement as long as you
had the car and a copy of the receipt since the
computer in the store keeps on loosing the information.

I was going to order shocks for the Suburban using a 25% off code, but
even with that Amazon had them about $50 cheaper.  The fitment detail
which lists that it fits my vehicle has a note that says lifetime
warranty.  I did not know Amazon had this.  Anybody know how this works?

[MBZ] Advance auto parts

2019-06-15 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I know some of you folks order a lot of items from them.  If an item
has a lifetime warranty, or any warranty for that matter, if it is
ordered online for pickup in store, or ordered online and shipped to
home, if you want to return it for replacement can you just take said
part into a store?  Will they have your info on file or will you have to
bring the order info with you from the online order?
