So how about doing what a neighbor did for his sons: installing a fire
pole?

I recall a stairway shown in Fine Homebuilding magazine I believe,
where there was a lever one pulled to convert the steps to a slide.

I think that if I did that, I would need reinforce and pad the wall at
the bottom. There is only about 3 feet of floor between the bottom of
the stairs and the wall.

I was thinking the pole for you and the stairs for the dogs.

If you did have the slide stairs, you could put sand in the varnish for
the last several feet to increase the coefficient of friction and slow
the dogs down -- unless, that is, they are using their feet and toenails
all the way down.

Come to think of it, they could get downstairs really fast if they ran
all the way. Adding a pad sounds like a good idea.

Re: [MBZ] Be Careful Out There

2012-11-28 Thread Rich Thomas
We have 3 standard poodles. The boys do not look like your regular
poodle -- with thin body and deep chest, they are sorta the opposite,
very stocky and not that tall. The breeder said they were something
called "Bibelot" poodles, bred in Canada or something to be more hunter
dogs (poodles were originally bred to be water dogs, they have webbed
toes). I have not been able to find out much about that designation.
Their mama was sort of a basic poodle but fairly large, did not see the
daddy. I am thinking that somewhere in their line is some of that big
black lab build, They both weigh ~85lb, not fat (well, Guinness might
have a bit of excess as he likes to clean the dish) but very strong and
powerful.

The female weighs ~45lb, she is a small standard and looks much more
like the poodle build. She keeps the boys in line, she spanks them
regularly when they get out of the bounds she has established. I tried
to explain to them when they were puppies how the world worked...

Jumbos are yet larger, a neighbor in Houston had a jumbo parti female
that was HUGE but very sweet.

Doggie talk reminds me: When #1 grndson was about two (not quite 3), we saw
a cute little doggie somewhere, and he turned to me and said, "That's a nice
doggie." I responded, "Yes, it is - do you know that some doggies are nice
people?" He suddenly had a sort of giggling, incredulous look, and I asked,
"What is it?" While still giggling a bit, he responded, "Doggies (giggle)
are (giggle) not (giggle) people." I explained, "Yes, I know, but some
doggies are really nicer and act much better than some people. Of course,
just as there are some bad people, there some bad doggies, too."

I recall a stairway shown in Fine Homebuilding magazine I believe, where

I think that if I did that, I would need reinforce and pad the wall at

The thing that truly amazes me is how quickly it happened. I don't know
if that is a factor of age. I think perhaps in the past, I might have
slipped and recovered but this time I just slipped big time.
I'm not ancient - I'm 60 - and although I am a bit over nourished, I
don't consider myself to be falling apart quite yet so it is a bit of a
wake up call. I also consider myself to be quite careful so it bothers
me that it happened like it did.

I fell a couple of times a couple of years ago but those were outdoors.
I stepped out the back door in our office building on the way to my
vehicle and it was icy. Down I went but I put my arm out and broke the
fall mostly. I suffered a bit of pain in my shoulder for a long while -
maybe because I did it a second time in the same spot. After that I
seemed to catch on to the fact that it is often slippery in that spot.

I have also stepped out of my truck when it was slippery and essentially
ended up hanging from my seat belt with my legs under the truck.

Apart from those incidents I have not fallen in many years. I recall a
couple of incidents when I was working on the addition to our house but
that would have been back in about 1987. I was backing down a ladder
with tools in both hands and managed to lose my balance and fall
backward onto the deck. I punched a bit of a hole in the palm of my hand
that time as I landed on a duplex nail that was holding some bracing
during the construction process.

I also stepped backwards off of a stepladder one time, onto a
screwdriver I had left on the floor of the porch and it rolled under my
foot and I went down but I don't recall really even hurting after those
incidents, but, of course, I was much younger.

Gravity is only a law if you choose to believe in it.

 Ouch!

I told my kids that the only laws they are allowed to break, without
discussing it with me first, are generally-accepted laws of physics. I
also told them that I will buy them a car of their choosing if they can
break one. I am hoping that one day I will have to pay out. :)

If it makes you feel better, SWMBO (who is "approximately" 30 :) fell down
our stairs and into the basement wall a few months back; she wound up with
a mild concussion and an awful lot of bed rest over the next couple of
weeks. We even have that grippy rubber on the staircase, it just takes one
misstep and some weird angles regardless of age.

Yeah, and getting bifocals makes it worse. The bifocal lens does
weird things to your depth perception in the 3-6 foot range. When I
first got bifocals, I was very careful on stairs. After I have had
them a few years, It is not so bad, but ladders, stairs and balancing
on anything are much more dangerous with bifocals.

I would recommend not walking down stairs in socks. Many times people will
fall especially on wooden stairs in sock feet. That is why hospitals uses
those socks that have those little rubber patterns on them. Just read this

I was in my late teens when my dad built a beautiful new oak staircase in
our house. The uprights to the banister were in, but only held in place
with wooden spacers at the bottom fastened with small finishing nails. As I
came running (as I always did) down the steps with only socks on my feet I
slipped and bounced down the steps on my butt. With my left hand I reached
out to the uprights to stop my fall. They maybe slowed me down a little,
but I pulled almost all of them out as I went by.

I wasn't hurt except for my pride. But if I were to do this now at 67 yrs.
old, I am sure I would be in pain for a while. My dad was PO'd, but didn't
get on my case since he was glad I was OK.

Thanks to all. I was not really looking for sympathy. Just suggesting
you all be careful and avoid such nonsense.

I was not wearing socks. I was barefoot. Not sure how I managed to
misplace my foot but I did feel it slip over the edge of the step.

And, no, I have not taken the time to go and find out if I did myself
any harm. I was a bit sore the first day and then things started to get
better and I assumed I was going to get away with it pretty easily.
I fear I did something I should not have yesterday but for the life of

Yeah, I've been careful with stairs for a while now -- been a few
years since I just ran up and down them without thought.

Keep moving, you don't want to get all knotted up from sitting with
cramping muscles, even if it hurts.

I would recommend not walking down stairs in socks. Many times people will
fall especially on wooden stairs in sock feet. That is why hospitals uses
those socks that have those little rubber patterns on them. Just read this and
wanted to offer some advice. By the way, I don't bounce as well as I once did
either. LOL

I obviously was not and am paying the price for it.

We live in a 2 storey house and last Thursday morning, I slipped on the
stairs going down to put the coffee on.

Only managed to miss about the 3 bottom steps but I went down fast and hard
and landed on my back and banged my head on one of the stair treads. Good
thing they are carpeted and not bare hardwood. Although I did not break
anything - at least not obviously- I am paying for my carelessness.

I thought I was getting better and I guess I overdid something yesterday as
today it hurts worse than it did on Thursday.

Head is ok but ribs are unhappy. If I just sit here all is well but if I
move in certain ways I am reminded quickly that I should not do that.

I think I am not going to do much this evening.

So, be careful and don't do what I did.

I normally keep at least one hand on the handrails but for some reason I was
carrying something in each hand and did not have a hand out to either rail.
I had my glasses in one hand and am happy I did not manage to break them.

Randy,

Be sure to go for an MRI to see if any damage was done to your back.
I herniated a disc from a hard fall and needed surgery, but the good
news is that this type of back surgery has a very high (90+ %) success
rate) so I recovered and am now back to "normal".

Good luck!

My attorney did the same thing 6 years ago. He was paralyzed from the neck
down for 5 years exactly like Christopher Reeve. He died a few months ago
and was absolutely miserable for the entire time he was sick. He told me
numerous times he wished he had died and never survived the fall. He was a
great man too. Very sad. You are very lucky.

[MBZ] Be careful out there!

2008-09-09 Thread R A Bennell
Was having coffee in the local Dairy Queen this morning when a car got
clobbered by a train at the level crossing
just north of the restaurant. Don't know if the flashing lights at the crossing
were on. Do try to remember to
always look both ways before crossing train tracks. It might save your life
some day.

Only one woman in the car that got hit. Not quite sure what the vehicle was. I
am told it was a VW Passat - maybe a
wagon as the back looked chopped off and I don't think it was a Golf. She
survived the bang and was taken out of
the car by fire and ambulance crews and hauled away. Car withstood the impact
fairly well. Hit on the driver's
side. Not sure exactly as I did not see the impact. One of the fellows I was
with said "that black car just spun
onto the grass" We thought it had been hit by the train. It was a late model
Cadillac and the driver's side was
somwhat mushed. Walked over and then saw an engine laying on the road and the
front of the Caddy was fine. The VW
car was on the front of the train a block South of us. Good thing the train is
hardly moving at that crossing.
