The DNS problem,  if that is what the problem is, is on spyoogle's
servers, as she is only using a web interface to their spyware.

I was just saying then when she sent email it says "loading" like
spyoogle does not have the proper settings for their SMTP server.  Like
the client can't find the SMTP server.

when she tries to send it the  gmail web app just spins and says

To me the send problem seems like a DNS problem.  There is no
settings for dns in the web client that I can find, and since it
is spyoogle's web app, they set all the dns settings.

Domain name resolution is not the job of the browser, or any other
client software. It is part of the system "network stack". If
using a name in the URL bar works, then it is finding a DNS - but
it's possible that a particular server won't resolve a particular
name. Usually the DNS is handed out by DHCP as part of getting an
IP address - but often it can be set manually. Maybe change the
DNS (somewhere in network settings) to 8.8.8.8, which is Google's
domain name server. Or OpenDNS, which is 208.67.222.222

One solution might be to put a newer OS on the computer, but I
am reluctant to do that.  (new OS generally means poorer
performance as the OS is bloated more with each release.)

What about a different browser? Safari isn't the only choice.
Chrome, Chromium, Oprah, Firefox...

I use Gmail no problem on 10.6.8 with Firefox. Try using that. It's free, and
unlike Safari and Chrome, it really does default to privacy vs prostitution of
your data.

Running High Sierra (10.13.6) on a 2010 MBP (6,2) with zero issues.

As for DNS, you can find it in your Network Preferences.

[MBZ] gmail malfinction on 2011 macbook pro with el crap

2019-10-09 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
SWMBOs 2011 i5 MBP is running el crap (10.11).   When she opens an email
in gmail web client on safari, the reply button is greyed out.  If she
composes a new email in the gmail web app, when she tries to send it
the  gmail web app just spins and says "loading."  It never does send
the mail.

To me the send problem seems like a DNS problem.  There is no settings
for dns in the web client that I can find, and since it is spyoogle's
web app, they set all the dns settings.

I have the same setup on  my MBP, other than it is i7 and I can use the
spyoogle gmail web app. (but I don't generally)  I use postbox email
client for various accounts.  I tried to get her to let  me set up
postbox on her computer, but she does not want me to do that.   I don't
think I can get her off gmail onto another email address.

One solution might be to put a newer OS on the computer, but I am
reluctant to do that.  (new OS generally means poorer performance as the
OS is bloated more with each release.)

Here are my questions:

is there any way to install a newer version of safari without changing
the OS.  It does not appear possible through the "app store"

Has anyone successfully installed 10.12 or higher on a 2011 or older
computer?  (preferably MBP)

If so, was there a performance hit?

What OS did you install?

Has anyone encountered something like this?  If so, what is the solution?

Thanks

I think that gMail started out with 1GB mailboxes, and they have gone up
since then. One of their marketing points was that you would never have
to delete your email (why that was perceived as a good thing I'm not
sure 99.8% of all email isn't worth saving IMO, certainly not in
something out of your control like gMail)

Re: [MBZ] Gmail problems

2008-02-18 Thread Zoltan Finks
Yes! I have been having trouble with Gmail.
Sometimes you'll roll over a thread and it won't turn the cursor active. And
clicking won't open the email.

Other times you get the thread to open and it opens with the address info.,
but it's void of any content.

Other times it'll just sit there and try to open, say, the inbox and won't
do anything.

In my "window" menu (I'm using a Mac) it doesn't say "gmail" like it usually
does - it says "loading" constantly.

to Gmail (http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=13273)
and suck in a copy of my inbox. You can then copy off the Outlook

You need to use IMAP if you want a copy of subfolders. Outlook Express
does not do IMAP. Outlook does. Thunderbird does.

The web is full of horror stories where Gmail users lost everything
for various reasons, so grabbing a backup now and then is a good
thing.

Remember to set the mail client to leave a copy of mail on the server,
or else it will be deleted from Gmail when you sync - which may or may
not be desired. I suspect Google keeps a copy of all mail even if you

Re: [MBZ] gmail question some of you might know the answer to

2007-11-20 Thread John M McIntosh
Well there are other ways to know if the email was opened.

Google shows for example
http://www.returnreceipt.com
http://www.msgtag.com/Mail_Receipt_.html

These use the feature called "web bugs" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_bug
to let some server know when the mail was opened. Users with better
security knowledge may prevent this from working.

I suspect some of them likely exploit the poor security on windows
which might let them run programs by just open the email.

Re: [MBZ] gmail question some of you might know the answer to

2007-11-20 Thread Rory
>From Gmail Help search:

GMail, like most other webmail services, does not offer any "received
receipt" and "read receipt" features. Normally, standard email rules
imply that if a Delivery Failure Notification has not been received,
the message has been delivered to the intended recipient.

Some email clients, like MS Outlook, offer a "read receipt" feature
which can provide such notifications, provided that the recipient also
uses the same email client and has enabled or allowed the "receipt" to
be transmitted to the sender! In this case it is more of a worry as
the sender will never know, if he has enabled the "read receipt"
feature and does not receive one in return, whether the mail was (a)
not received, (b) received but not read, (c) received and read but the
"receipt" was disallowed by the recipient!

So it is better to go with general email standards which, to prevent
unnecessary mail traffic, imply that failure to receive any of the
Delivery Status notifications (Failed, Delayed, etc.) means the
message being successfully received by the recipient.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Re: [MBZ] gmail question some of you might know the answer to

Return Receipt is a function of the mail reader and is not supported via SMTP.
Everyone disables Return Receipts by default nowdays (Outlook,
Thunderbird). Most companies control the generation of Return Receipts
via a group policy and disable it.

The best you can do is run your own SMTP server and look at the logs
to verify that the destination mailserver accepted the message. You
won't be able to tell what it did with it. Some are set to generate a
return email if it was blocked as spam or if the recipient could not
be resolved, but you have no control over that.

There are lots of them! For example, the last two homes I've owned had
no broadband available, and neither was on Uranus (the former was just
outside of Boulder, CO; my current home is only 4 miles north of
Leesburg, VA. This is a heavily-populated suburb of Washington, DC and
is the fastest-growing county in the U.S. Although there's cable all
around me, Adelphia never bothered to pull cable to this subdivision
when it was created so all of us use satellite for TV. And because
we're 4 miles from the telco switch, there's no DSL available either. I
suffered with dialup until a local firm started offering wireless DSL
via a small antenna on the back of my house, and I signed up in a
heartbeat.

3. Gmail is the best web based email client right now...'nuff said.

That may be true. I've used Gmail a lot on the road - when I don't have
my own computer with me, I forward my regular POP mail to Gmail. But
like David, I still prefer POP-based email with local storage of every
message. I also prefer email-based lists like this one to online
web-based discussion forums. Even slight response-time delays (and
often much longer ones) using web-based stuff drives me nuts. To each
their own, I guess.

Gabriel, there are plenty of places even here in California that high speed

Maybe even 8-tracks? Right now gmail is the best web based email for
everyone...that is a fact.

I have a cable modem, but I read the list with Mozilla Thunderbird even
though I have a gmail account. I just plain hate web interfaces.

  << CAUTION! Rant alert!!! >>

Only someone stupid enough to think that doctors and medicine are the
only solution for sickness is likely to think that gmail is a good idea
for everyone.

In my case, it's _because_ the list is so busy I _don't_ want to use
gmail's web mail service!! _I_ think it's pretty silly to tie up my
'phone line just to _read_ all the email that comes from all the lists.

These features you speak so highly of _only_ work if you think that
reading email _while_ online is a sensible thing...

Some of us think there are other ways.

Yes, I use a gmail address. But I don't read my mail online - nor do I
read my snail-mail while sitting in the Post Office. So those features
you assume all gmail users "benefit" from don't apply to me.

So I'm glad gmail works well for you. But don't think that the way _you_
use gmail is the one and only, best way for everyone.

I choose to use a local (LAN) IMAP and SMTP servers running on GNU/Linux
with custom scripts for sending and receiving. This, for me, is the most
sensible way for me to manage my email. But I'm smart enough to also
know that just because it works well for me _doesn't_ mean that it is
the right answer for everone.

Please continue to share the advantages you see in gmail.

Please keep in mind that even gmail has a number of options.

GMail does from time to time give server errors and not let you in, but that
is a small price to pay for free.

I fourth this! This kind of email list is a clear example of how to
best use Gmail. The threading of discussions is second to none.

Re: [MBZ] Gmail

2005-08-30 Thread Tjohn
Let me take this a step further. Anyone complaining about the number of
posts who doesnt have gmail is like a sick patient who refuses to take his
medicine. Gmail groups the various posters in a thread, and displays only
the ones you haven't read. It also automatically hide quoted text, so when
someone quotes a whole thread, then adds "me too," all you see is their
post. It is perfectly suited to email lists, and doesn't have to be
configured to work. I too have invites, pls take us up on the offer.
