Re: [MBZ] I get the 140

2008-12-15 Thread Curt Raymond
I had some troubles with trailer tires so I started carrying 2 spares.
Fortunately the 4 hole wheels for my little snowmobile trailer are cheap. One
time I bought a new tire and rim, the next time I went and asked for another
tire and rim. They claimed they couldn't get another tire and rim combo any
more and proceeded to try to sell me my old wheel that they had said was "no
good" because of a dent. I questioned him on the dent and he said "oh we put
some sealant in, its fine." I explained how he was selling me my wheel again
and got the tire/wheel for free. Had them dismount it (they were pissed about
that) borrowed their hammer and beat the dent out) then had them remount the
tire. Still on my trailer several years later but I see it has some weather
checking so it probably needs replacement.
Since then I've started going to a different tire place that I like better.

Yea, thats what Im planning to do unless I cant find a real tire place
open tomorrow.  I bought a new trailer wheel to mount a spare tire to,
first one arrived, wrong size. Next one arrived friday, wrong size
again.  Hopefully this one will be right.  Sure miss the days when the
corner service station had a tire machine etc

2008-12-14 Thread Hendrik & Fay
Thanks for the info Peter, how does one check the condition of the diff
mounts in car?
Also according to the official MB line on sub-frame removal the exhaust
has to come out, part of the SLS has to go, blah blah blah, fuel lines,
more blah blah blah. Personally I'd be more inclined to remove the brake
calipers instead of messing with brake fluid, as my car has ABS it is
going to be more technical to bleed the system.
I found a website which shows a home made tool
http://mercedesshop.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=149722 which don't
look too hard to create. A member of the Ozbenz forum beat me in an ebay
auction for the proper MB tool to do this job and I asked him if he'd be
interested in selling me the tool after he has done his cars but I think
by the time that happens I'll be too old to do much of anything, except
talk about the good old days when I was able to work on cars and chase
nursey around the old folks home. Although according to Murphy's law,
the minute you finish the home made tool (after much cursing and burning
of hands) the phone will ring.

You will need to drop the exhaust (not remove, just lower). You may
need to remove the speed sensor at the differential to prevent pulling
the wires off as well.

Remove the two bolts, one front and one rear while supporting the
subframe with a jack, then lower the subframe until you have
sufficient clearance to use a cup type puller to remove the mounts. A
piece of plastic pipe and some steel plate should work, but they may
be pretty well stuck. As noted, one goes in from the top and I don't
remember at the moment which one it is.

Once the old ones are out, pull the new ones in (silicone grease or
dish detergent will make this much easier), lift the subframe back up,
and install new bolts. All the necessary bits come with the new mounts.

Repeat for the other side.

Watch for stress on the brake lines -- you may want to remove them.
This is a good time to change the brake fluid if you have not
recently, too.

If you also need new differential mounts and rear suspension links,
it's only requires removing the driveshaft and brake lines to drop the
entire subframe off the car

I don't know about S and C, but W means Werksbezeichnung, or "factory
name". The LWB sedan variants and the R Class are prefixed V for
Verlangerte, "extended".

There's a new prefix in town, too. X, for, I guess, SUV variants of

2008-12-13 Thread Kevin Kraly
On the 3rd day of Christmas my true love gave to me, some bandages I needed
after I tried to feel what I was welding! Hurts, donit? Shoulda used that
blasted duct tape!

Re: [MBZ] I get the 140 and fix it with duct tape, now 4sale for 5K and do the subframe bushes need attention

2008-12-13 Thread Hendrik & Fay
It's 4.30pm on Sunday here and yes we are ahead in time. The day starts
somewhere just to the west of Hawaii.
At the moment I am trying to find some good info on replacing the
subframe bushes in my S124.
Perhaps when Santa leaves me a welder under the tree I can make my own
special tool with a few rolls of duct tape and some superglue.
On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me, a welder in the
shape of a pear tree, lah lllahlla lahhllaa llahllaa, on the second day
of Christmas I set the shed on fire

[MBZ] I get the 140

2008-12-13 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin, laptop
Picked up the 140 earlier. On the way from its location to the hotel I
start getting bad vibration from the trailer. I pull off the highway at
the next exit. Bad move, next thing I know Im in the middle of the
ghetto east st louis. I check things out, dont see anything. GEt to
hotel, jack up trailer, I see I have a tire about to explode, the whole
side is bulging out. So, I have a spare tire but its not mounted to a
wheel. I pull the bad wheel off, head off to find a tire place to mount
the spare tire I have, only place I can find is walmart. STand there
for 20 minutes not getting any help, I just leave. So in the morning I
will have to find a tire shop nearby, hopefully open on Sunday.
