[MBZ] Could be a good deal for a project -- 1989 Mercedes 560SEL - $15 (Charlotte)

The car in the image is the same color and model as the car I am 
selling, but the one I have is covered so photos are a challenge. Our 
car is not a junker but it is not running either. It has been in my 
driveway covered for several years and I am selling it as is. It is too 
valuable to crush. The right buyer could get it back on the road or sell 
it for parts. I don’t have the time or I would do that. The body is 
virgin and has very little in the way of dings if any. The leather 
interior, while it needs to be cleaned is in excellent condition. The 
car was my late dad’s car and he kept it immaculately. The rear window 
is busted out. I won’t sell the car for metal value as it’s not junk. I 
will however sell it cheap to someone who can make productive use of 
this wonderful S Class Benz gas V8.

Heh, tough to do unless you want to invest the time and effort…

Went out to rebuild the wiring in the right side headlight for the CL600 his 
morning.When I was done I noticed that the outer mount, a ball head that goes 
in a socket on the body, was cracked. Got it in place properly with a strap 
clamp and JB Welded it on the cracks to restore it’s integrity. This slowed me 
down for reassembling the front bumper, which will now have ot wait for tonight 
in order for the repair to properly set up. Hopefully, the mail will get here 
early so I can swap out the right rear ABS sensor.

I might take on the right door wiring tomorrow if I feel like a challenge…

It was Dec 9 when I first saw it.
Judging from the apparent number of backorders it seems like a pretty 
good price.
I got a more complete set of the normal length ones about ten years ago 
at an Advance Auto Christmas sale, they were half off and I used a 35% 
coupon, I think I paid less than $1.50 per wrench.
Would like to see a good deal on flex, stubby, or extra long without the 
standard length.

Remembering that the market for all vehicles is still gone stupid, although it 
seems to be getting back to something resembling sanity.

It looks like, in my area, that the spread on TDI prices is really high.
For reference, when I bought my '15 Jetta in 2019 it had, I think, 75,000 miles 
and I paid just over $9k. It's at 98,000 miles now and has only had a few 
issues, like needing brakes and sway bar links, oh and struts because a spring 
broke. I *think* it needs one rear shock although I'll do both at the same 
time. It's bouncy in the right rear but nothing seems loose and passes a shock 
test if you bounce the rear end. Tires don't seem to wear abnormally.

I'd pass on any TDI automatic. They're not known for longevity, especially if 
maintenance isn't followed religiously.

No. But it is new, with the factory warranty. I look at it this way. If he was

4kW is woefully undersized for most folks.  I think 10-12kW is more
what is thought of as 'whole house'.  Smaller than the usual rope-pull
genny.  You could make it work, but you'd probably better be thinking
'tiny house', or maybe Green Acres.  The usual electric hot water heater
(tank) is 4+kW all by itself.  Leaving _zero_ for lights, etc.

Likely it is 2 2kW single-phase windings, which means that depending
on how your house is wired, you might only get half of the 4kW, effectively.
(Since I very much doubt it'd have the necessary balancing transformer
to guarantee 4kW under all circumstances.)

I believe this is more an issue of Kaleb looking for a home standby set. A 
kludged up arrangement with a trailer mounted generator is not the ideal setup, 
especially if he expect it to be serviceable when he’s away from home.

The trailer mounted set would probably do fine, especially since it’s a Lister 
and has a lot of mass. That’s half the battle when getting hit with a big load. 
The rest of it comes from how rapidly the governor and fuel system can respond, 
as well as the voltage regulator.

But it won’t run his whole house.

I used to have a cheap Homelite 3650W (labeled Husky by Home Depot) with 
6.5hp Subaru/Robin power.
My 1.5T heat pump puts out 18,000 BTU in standard conditions with a 
little 16000 BTU Copeland scroll compressor. I believe my locked rotor 
amps are 47, I'm sure Kaleb's LRA is higher, maybe low three digits.


Anyway, with a big capacitor hard start kit, that little Homelite would 
start and run my heat pump, and with heat pump and refrigerator running 
would start and run my well pump. The heat pump calls for a 20A HVAC 
breaker, it will run just fine on a 15A fast acting breaker. If I can 
run mine on a 6.5HP generator, I bet Kaleb can run his on a 13HP, 
especially if he buys a soft start kit. Running a 5kw heat strip would 
be a big deal for him, like running a 4.5Kw water heater is for me. The 
idiots at Robin put a 20A 240V outlet and 20A breaker in my 5600W (6100W 
peak) light commercial (contractor grade) generator, and the water 
heater blows the breaker with nothing else turned on. Every other 11HP 
5-6kw generator I've owned would run the water heater just fine.

I don’t know what a “genny” is, but if you’re referring to the trailer mounted 
generator in the link, no, it’s not a good deal. The one positive thing about 
it is that it’s a Lister diesel, which means it’s the 240D of diesel industrial 
engines, but it’s also expensive as heck to repair if something breaks. As a 2 
cylinder, it’s likely no more than about 8kW, meaning it won’t run your heat 
pump. It probably has no auto start capability, either.

If you needed power in the field for a job site or something like that, fine, 
but for anything else it would be a waste of money.

Runs slightly rough?
Those ignition coils don't last forever, although it'll run pretty good on
half of them, as long as each cylinder gets reliable spark to one plug.

I know a Snap-On Soleus Ultra has a scope function to read individual plug
voltage patterns, can show that a cylinder has a flatline coil and an
inconsistent coil when the ECU has no pending or set codes for misfires.
I'm not sure if the SDS setup does that or not. The only time I tried to
do ignition on the SDS, it was on the W140 which had codes telling me
which coils were bad.

She used to runs and drive, typical old Mercedes issues

Then some asshole tow truck operator decided to tow her with a tow strap and 
ripped the transmission / rear end apart
Not sure which

Power door locks don’t work, vacuum pump needs a rebuild, alternator brand new
Motor was very strong and was in great shape for its age, prior to damage

She runs rough, yanking on the transmission did damage
Will go into gear but only moves on heavy load

Clean Virginia title

Pm for more pictures

Will trade for a decent boat

Yeah, I know. I think some guy in Topeka or somewhere in Kansas owns it. I 
check in on it occasionally.

Since Dad was a full IFR rated instructor I usually got to fly left seat. I

The FBO handled scheduling as it did for other owner groups. I can recall on 
more than one occasion where we packed up for a weekend away at our place on 
Sanibel, only to show up and no plane. Dad would have scheduled it weeks in 
advance.

After a several instances of this and indifference from the other owners, he 
bailed.

A month later he bought his Bonanza V35, N899T. Swore he would never share 
again.

Yes glow plugs but if you do have to replace them and you follow the proper 
procedures you can get them out without too much issue

Remove manifold then you can get to everything.  Replace delivery valve 
seals, and just replace all the clear plastic lines under there and it 
will be good to go.

That sounds like all the o-rings on the fuel lines (about seven of them I
think) need to be replaced.  IP stays in the car, just need to remove the
intake manifold (new gasket) to get to all of them.  Rather a tedious job,
need to get the o-rings in advance.

Definitely looks like a good deal.  I bought the girl's E320 for $2800, 
it is in nice shape.  She had to replace the radiator and alternator on 
it, but I guess that stuff is just to be expected. Paint looks good on

Wrong tank!  Must have poached it from a W108 6 cyl. 280SE.  I have the
real deal W109 w/s washer canister if anyone needs it.

My W109 was tobacco brown/cognac leather and won StarFest back in the early
90s.  Very dependable car once it was sorted out (had to replace the
trigger points).  It had a Trane (?) breakerless ignition which meant
turning the key was like switching on a light bulb.  Ignition was that
quick.

Agreed... there were a few funny things about the car, but all in all a
great deal.  My favorite thing is the creative use of the windshield washer
tank.

But, it won't have the same soul.  Good trade-off?  Your choice.  Far more 
pleasant ride (quiet, smooth, less body roll, better brakes), but something is 
lost...
