[MBZ] Online EPC down?

2008-07-07 Thread dave walton
I can't bring up the Online EPC:
https://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/home.jsp

I log in okay, but can't start it. Anyone else having problems, or is
my computer flaking out?

Thanks

[MBZ] Online EPC down?

2011-07-29 Thread Alex Chamberlain
Has anyone else not been able to get into the online EPC lately?
After logging in I click the link that says "Launch EPC-Net
Online"---then almost immediately I get a small box saying "Unable to
launch EPC" and under that a window saying "Requested
http://epc-prod.startekinfo.com/EPC-net/servlets/epc.jar. Failed to
load resource."

I've deliberately not updated the version of Java on this machine
since I started using the online EPC, because I know it's sensitive to
that---wonder if they finally changed it so that now it requires a
*newer* version of Java instead?

I'm running XP SP3, if that gives anyone any ideas. (Other than that
I should try doing this in Linux.)

Dave, did you recently upgrade Java? On the machine I use to get to
that site (running XP SP2) it won't work with the latest version of
Java; I had to force a downgrade to a previous version. The failure
mode is exactly as you've described. I don't know the relevant version
numbers offhand, but will check when I get home in about 10 hours.

I think I just figured it out, and my guess was right. Works fine on
another XP SP3 machine with Java Version 6 Update 26 build
1.6.0_26-b03 (per the About Java box in the Java control panel). I
don't have the first machine in front of me, but I know it's got an
older Java on it, maybe even Version 5.

Summary: If the EPC isn't working, try updating Java to the latest
version at . Hope this helps
somebody else besides me!

I have Java 6, latest version, still EPC doesn't load or open. It does give
me a courteous message stating it won't open however.. how kind.

Anyone remember the good old days when you actually had a hard copy book

book never "crashed" and I could carry it to the car and lay it on the
fender while sorting out what went to what, even if the electricity went
out.

The EPC has been having issues all week. The bad thing is when it is down it is
down for everyone, including MB dealers. They really hate it.

With a very limited geek skill, I found that Java wasn't getting validation
of the license source for the EPC site...[if I'm understanding what I saw
written in "geekese"]
Anyway, it's above my pay grade. someone please let us know if it ever
works again. Sounds like a useful tool in keeping our MBZ on the street and
out of the dust bin.

But what a pain to copy!

And really tough to look at it from 15,000 miles away.

And if the text I'm looking for is not in the index, searching
for one word is a very, very, slow long process.

Re: [MBZ] Online EPC down?

Points well made and taken Philip. Having said that, when the chips are
down, I'll open the case in the trunk, take out the hard copy Maint. manual
and the Illustrated Parts Manual [even if it's out of date] and fix the
problem at the side of the road or know why I can't. All the fancy
electronic whiz bang devices are only a single solar flair from failure.
Drop your beloved laptop or IPhone off the back of a truck and then drop the
tattered hard copy manual off the same truck... pick them both up and use
them. Which one survived?

Copy??... try this, Buy a hard copy, remove the spine so it becomes loose
leaf, punch the pages for a 5 hole binder and then remove the desired pages,
make copies, replace the originals in the binder, take the copies to the car
and do the work. Grease spots? no prob.. make new copies from the
"master"... IPC pictures to look at while you are removing the problem
assembly? No problem..

You will be amazed at how helpful it is when the assembly picture is in
front of you in hard copy.

Ok... so I give up call up the pages on your laptop after you fight MBZ
system that doesn't work print the pages and use them. we'll call it
a "win".

Oh, I don't think the paper manual is bad - just that I am now
unhappy with both paper and electronic! Historically I have
preferred paper manuals. But I have come to really like the
advantages of the PDFs. *sigh* I don't like PDFs, I don't like
paper.

Hehe. And how will you make that copy without the help of
electronics?

Electronically, I have a _complete_ copy on CD to use in other
computers, a copy on the laptop, a copy on the desktop, and I
can email you a page with my notes on it. :)

Well, I don't use the silly MB interface.

I wonder if I could make an iPad/iPhone/Android app that would

Now to school myself to actually be able to navigate through the rather
