selling [300D] to him and buying a 240D. What can I expect for
fuel mileage for a 240D of the same time.

You are already doing very well. The 240D would not do better
unless it was a stickshift, and maybe not even then.

An automatic 240D (we had one) is very un-fun in the acceleration
department. The words dangerously slow tend to come to mind.
One of the few cars I've ever driven that could not keep speed
up some of our highway hills in this State.

My 200D kicked its ass up one side of the street and down the
other, performing nicely and getting substantially better mileage.
Not, lately, better than you're already getting I might add.

If you want to change, fine, but don't do it for mileage!

Thanks for the insights. I am very gentle on my commute. I have a friend who

And he doesn't do as well as I do. But for 3 mpgs I'm not making the change.

I was thinking that if Peter was getting 2-3mpg more than I thought normal

I've had both my 240Ds up to 32mpg with very gentle driving but on my normal

I had an 84 300CD that really did justice to the model.

The original owner was a manager at the Montvale, NJ parts distribution center,
and as a result, this car was pimped out in a very stock manner.

After I got it and tweaked the ALDA, it would chirp the tires on the 1-2 up
shift without significant effort.

It was a great car, the only problem being that as my kids got older (and
taller!) they could no longer fit comfortably in the back seats.

The 300CD in the turbo model is highly underrated, IMHO.

Really? I always thought a W123 300D turbo was more in the 26mpg average range.
I've averaged 28mpg with my '78 240D over the last 21,000 miles which is
exactly the same as I got with my '83 240D over 80,000 miles. Thats mostly
highway miles.

I was thinking that if Peter was getting 2-3mpg more than I thought normal for
a 300D that maybe he could average 30mpg with a 240D.

I've had both my 240Ds up to 32mpg with very gentle driving but on my normal
commute I just can't be bothered.

Okay... So as long as we are musing miscellaneously, Fuel
Mileage. I have a 1983 300D - This thing is nice good shape
bought it right, and a friend really would like to buy it from
me. I bought it to teach myself about the Mercedes diesel,
and that has been a success. As I see fuel prices rise, I am
thinking of selling it to him and buying a 240D. What can I
expect for fuel mileage for a 240D of the same time. I know
it will be super slow - but it would probably do well on my
 commute.

My commute is 45 miles each way - rolling country hills with
only 2 complete stops. I drive about 60 MPH. In my 300D i
tend to get right at about 28 or 29 MPG. I'm not worried
about fun, just economy. I have a Miata to deliver some fun
during the spring and fall when the weatherr is perfect.

So - share your thoughts. The other thing that appeals to me
is the manual climate control in the 240.

A W123 240 will probably not do any better. Because the
turbocharger increases engine efficiency, reducing the number
of cylinders and loosing the turbo will probably cancel out. In
my experience, a turbo 300 in good condition can get _better_
fuel mileage than a normally-aspirated 240 - especially above 50
to 55 MPH (80-90 km/h).

But I'm with you on the manual heater controls!
