I have the more expensive of the two models they sold a couple of years ago
- it works great where it will fit. It doesn't work so great with the right
angle mirror - I think it's trying to focus on the mirror or something. I
used it when checking the oil pick-up tube in the O-470 Continental and
when cleaning the wing for the installation of a new fuel bladder. For the
latter job, a cheap web cam and a laptop worked better - wider angle of
view.

These look exactly like my Milwaukee borescope that I received as a gift
several years ago. I just now checked it, and it still works.
I would guess it is the same tool or a Chinese knockoff.

I'll send it to you (or you can drive up and get it) if you like and you can

You could buy a tool holder that is sized accordingly with sizes clearly
labeled on the holder. That solves both the identification and storage
problem. Or replace with bits/keys that have the size stamped on them.

[MBZ] Tools - Sorting Allen (Hex) Wrenches

2013-05-29 Thread Jerry Herrman
Slowly, I have been sorting out the fistfuls of drill bits in my machinists
chests, and, with the help of the three drill gauges (letter, number,
fraction), I can determine the correct sizes of the ones that are not stamped.
Or to really waste lots of time, I have used a micrometer to measure them.

I want to now begin sorting the numerous loose hex wrenches that inhabit these
drawers so that I can discontinue my established practice of using trial and
error as a method of finding the correct Allen wrench to fit a particular
application (who was Allen anyway?). I know that there are charts giving the
various SAE and Metric sizes, such as the charts in the two links below.
Since using a micrometer is far too slow, I would like to find something
equivalent to a drill gauge that will indicate the size. Is there a way to use
a drill gauge for this purpose?.
Is there a way to distinguish a metric from an SAE hex wrench?
Any suggestions?

It occurs to me as a write this to ask if there are metric drill bits. I have
never noticed a drill bit with a metric marking.

Re: [MBZ] Tools - Sorting Allen (Hex) Wrenches

2013-05-29 Thread Greg Fiorentino
Yes there are metric drill bits.

One way to quickly measure is with a metric/SAE caliper, along with a chart
to convert decimal (SAE) to fractions. HF has one you can have for $10 with
a coupon from any of the usual mags. It is certainly accurate enough for
that purpose and faster than a mic. The idea is to switch the caliper back
and forth from metric to SAE until you match a size. Most metric Allen keys
are integer sizes.

The tougher trick is then to store them so you can pick the correct size.

Good idea.
A hex key will fit a drill gauge that's 1.155x as big as the key.
Example: 6mmx1.155=6.93mm or 17.5/64 inch. If it's a bit loose in the 9/32 drill
gauge hole and won't go in the 17/64, it's probably 6mm.

I'd find it faster to use a digital caliper than to do the math.
I paid about $10 for my Harbor Freight / Central Tools caliper, and it switches
from mm to inch at the touch of a button.

Re: [MBZ] Tools - Sorting Allen (Hex) Wrenches

2013-05-29 Thread G Mann
You need 3 things.

1. Vernier caliper, digital, Harbor Freight.. $9 and change on sale

2. A drill and tap chart that lists all known decimal, number, and letter
drill sizes in both metric and SAE measurements.

3. Some scrap blocks of 2x4 long enough to drill a nice straight line of
holes [or several straight lines of holes] the size of each drill with the
size written in pencil at that hole.
Same for the hex keys The Harbor Freight caliper will measure both in
inch and metric at the push of a button..

Then all you have to do is put the drill or hex key back in the hole it
fits in when you use it.
Problem resolved.

Slowly, I have been sorting out the fistfuls of drill bits in my
machinists chests, and, with the help of the three drill gauges (letter,
number, fraction), I can determine the correct sizes of the ones that are
not stamped. Or to really waste lots of time, I have used a micrometer to
 measure them.

I want to now begin sorting the numerous loose hex wrenches that inhabit
these drawers so that I can discontinue my established practice of using
trial and error as a method of finding the correct Allen wrench to fit a
particular application (who was Allen anyway?). I know that there are
charts giving the various SAE and Metric sizes, such as the charts in the
 two links below.
Since using a micrometer is far too slow, I would like to find something
equivalent to a drill gauge that will indicate the size. Is there a way to
use a drill gauge for this purpose?.
Is there a way to distinguish a metric from an SAE hex wrench?
 Any suggestions?

It occurs to me as a write this to ask if there are metric drill bits. I
have never noticed a drill bit with a metric marking.

[MBZ] TOOLS EXPLAINED

2013-03-12 Thread Gerry Archer

Subject: TOOLS EXPLAINED

DRILL PRESS:
A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock
out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer
across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had care
fully set in the corner where nothing could get to it.

WIRE WHEEL:
Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench
with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses
from fingers in less time than it takes to say, 'OH SH --'

SKIL SAW:
A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short.

PLIERS:
Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of
blood-blisters.

BELT SANDER:
An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into
major refinishing jobs.

HACKSAW:
One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle... It
transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more
you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes.

VISE-GRIPS:
Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing
else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat
to

the palm of your hand.

OXYACETYLENE TORCH:
Used almost entirely for lighting various inflammable and non-flammable
objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the
wheel hub out of which you want to remove a bearing race..

TABLE SAW:
A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for
testing wall integrity.

HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK:
Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed
your

new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper.

BAND SAW:
A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut good
aluminum sheets into smaller pieces that fit more easily into the trash can
after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge.

TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST:
A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of everything you forgot to
disconnect.

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER:
Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style
paper-and-metal oil cans thereby splashing oil on your shirt; but can also
be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads.

STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER:
A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted
screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms.

PRY BAR:
A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you
needed

to remove in order to replace a 50-cent part.

HOSE CUTTER:
A tool used to make hoses too short.

HAMMER:
Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a
kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent to the
object we are trying to hit.

UTILITY KNIFE:
Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered
to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats,
vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund
cheques, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work
clothes, but only while in use.

Re: [MBZ] Tools at Lowes

2008-12-07 Thread Dimitri Seretakis
I bought the jack in Greece.  I spend a few months in Greece every year where I
have a 71 220/8.  It is s much easier to buy non China made tools here.
Facom, Beta, Bellota, Gedore tools abound here.  The 2 floor jacks I own in the
US  are Chinese.  It is very very difficult to find a non- China jack in the
US.  Griots Garage has a nice Spanish made low profile 2 ton jack for about
$400.  I paid 350 euros for my 1.5 ton, long jack here in Greece.  The Griot's
jack is therefore probably worth the price.

Home Despot had some pretty amazing bargains in their main aisle (not the

Re: [MBZ] Tools at Lowes

2008-12-03 Thread Rich Thomas
I quit going to HD a few years ago after they refused to replace a
lifetime guarantee router bit (satisfaction guaranteed! free
replacement!), $20, and the parking lot started filling up with nails
and trash (cutback on sweeping) and Mexicans aggressively begging for
work. I took my considerable business to Lowes. I think the pres of HD
cashed out for hundreds of million$ after the company tanked, he's now
begging in DC after a stellar job at one of the car companies. I keep
trying to figure out how to get a job like that, so far no luck.

The $10 tool sets seem pretty good, the locking pliers' screws are a bit
rough, but at $2.50 each I can't complain. The slip joint pliers are
pretty nice. All have good grippy rubber handles and lifetime no
questions asked free replacement at Lowes.

Plus 2 ignition lock removal tools for 126, 124 201. Hooks to remove

They may want some other numbers from the cat cover - I'll probably order

I know we usually make do with a paper clip or home-made tools - perhaps
these may work better -

Re: [MBZ] Tools for MB

2008-06-09 Thread LWB250
Thank goodness - they're both on opposite sides of
town from me.

I have a big roll around mechanic's chest I built some
years back for my woodworking tools. I had these
wimpy little hard rubber casters on it I knew would
fail some day, but they were in my junk box at the
time I built it and it didn't get moved around in the
shop much...

I knew there was no way it would make it up the moving
truck ramp, so I figured it was time to pony up and
put some real casters on it.

I went to Harbor Freight and bought 8 ball bearing
rubber tire casters, two fixed and two swivel, with
locks. Cost me about $45.

Now my box kicks butt.

I started wandering around the store until I saw all
the other guys with a glazed over sort of look on
their faces...after going down a few aisles I
understood why. I went right to the casters, got what
I needed, and checked out immediately.

I got home and told my teenage son about the place.
He was suitably unimpressed. Darn kids these days.

In my experience (comparing a dial gage with feel) the nut setting is
right when you can just feel the slightest movement when you push/pull on

That may vary. It's been a while, but I believe my minimum feel is in the
range of .001 to .002. I had no problem adjusting motorcycle valves to
.004-.006 and .008-.010 by feel, and then checking with a go-nogo gauge to
make sure it was in range (It always was). I would not have tried do anything
below .002 by feel, it would have been a waste of time instead of a time-saver.

If it's a one-off job, instead of one you do daily and develop a feel for,
I'd use proper measuring tools every time.

You fasten the dial indicator to the brake disk hub with a magnetic base
and put the tip of the indicator on the end of the spindle. Then you grab
the brake disk with both hands and move it in and out. The amount of
movement the dial indicator should show should be about 0.0005. [That's
the gist of what the manual says, anyhow.]

I think that old Mongomery Ward tools are pretty good. My dad had a
set of combination wrenches and a couple of other items from them,
probably circa 1965 or so, maybe earlier. The look and feel good, and
work well, and none of them has broken yet.

in 1968 from Montgomery Wards when I worked as a VW/Porsche mechanics

quality is much lower on the Craftsman part. So far, I have noticed the
drawer slides being cranky on the Sears piece - the drawer must be lined up

almost 40 years old tool chest.

Mine was a GE model (I can give you the number if
you're really interested) that retailed around $700.
I think it has a 3.5 cubic foot capacity, which is
more than adequate for us. According to the specs, it
uses around 15 gallons of water per cycle, compared
with as much as 45 gallons for my old maytag top
loader.

There was no way I was paying +$1000 for a washing
machine, and this one fit my needs without the big
price tag. The only differences I could find between
it and the expensive machines was the number of
cycles and slightly more capacity.

I did go with the pedestal, which I'm not sure was
worth it. It does raise it up to a level where you
don't have to stoop over to get stuff in and out, but
for storage I have yet to find it to be that helpful.

More like the antithesis of the bell curve. A 'normal distribution' bell

describes it, has peaks on both ends and a wide trough in the middle.

On waterheaters I'd imagine the new ones are MUCH better insulated than even 10
years ago and more than that ago fuggetaboutit. Remember when people were
setting their houses on fire wrapping hotwater heaters in insulation?

Yay forced hot water heat. Turn on the tap, the furnace fires up and hot water

I guess I look at the difference in cost amortized
over the life of the appliance. That being
considered, you're talking about less than $10/year
for the difference, which isn't really significant in
my mind.

That also doesn't factor in the cost savings in energy
efficiency. While I can't imagine water heater
technology has gotten to the point of really major
gains in efficiency over the last 10 years, with other
appliances it is definitely a consideration.

The house is just about 10-1/2 years old, so some of

Re: [MBZ] Tools and Quality

2007-08-03 Thread Tom Hargrave
A lot of tools have a lifetime warranty, but most don't realize how these
work. When a company sets up a warranty, they factor the cost of
replacements, plus additional profit. They add additional profit because
like it or not, the company will make money on the warranty. And because of
this, a tool or piece of equipment with a long term warranty costs more than
the exact same quality tool with a lesser warrantee the cost difference is
not justified by just the warranty.

Sears, for example, offered still offers a lifetime warranty on their
Craftsman line. But the warranty does not indicate that their product is any
better than anyone else's tools. The warranty just states that they will
replace the tool when / if it breaks. And if you compare the price of
Craftsman tools to other name brands, it soon becomes apparent that you are
paying a lot for the name, and for the warranty.

That said, I own a lot of Craftsman tools but I've also broken a lot of
Craftsman tools. But I also have a set of no name wrenches that refuse to
die.

If I were to buy my tools all over again, I'd buy the Kolbalt line offered
by Lowes. They also happen to offer a lifetime warranty but I'd buy them for
the finish.

last weekend, I would beg to differ with you on
that

Yes, the warranty does work out to about $10/year as
you move up the scale, however, there are also
differences in construction and components as well.

For instance, the 6 year warranty heater I considered
had plain copper elements. The 12 year warranty
heater ($70 more) had stainless steel. It also had a
solid state controller that monitors usage and
learns the usage patterns, using them to turn down
the heater when there is no demand expected (like in
the middle of the night.)

I have no idea what the value of the additional items
is from a manufacturing standpoint, suffice to say
that they are probably worth the difference.

Good info, I am corrected. My experience was of some years ago, working
with some manufacturers -- they just sold a longer warranty on the
same unit, gaming on how long they would last. I guess they are either
smarter now, or more competitive. Good info to know.

My experience with dishwashers some years ago was that the $500
KitchenAid had exactly the same guts as the $200 special, except the
timer had more bumps on it to activate more cycles. All built in the
same factory of mostly the same bits. All lasted about the same time
too. Not sure now.

Re: [MBZ] Tools and Quality

2007-08-03 Thread Tom Hargrave
Everything manufactured has a MTBF rating the rating stands for Mean Time
Between Failure or the expected point at which 1/2 of the units have failed.
I'd expect the 12 year water heater to be manufactured differently since
it's life expectancy is so much different from the 3 5 year units. It also
does not surprise me that the 3 5 year units are built the same and they
probably have the same MTBF. And the real difference between the two? The
warrantee - my point earlier.

As far as the 6 month failure is concerned - all manufactured goods have
some early life failure that water heater was likely a classic example.

Failures follow a predictable curve called a bathtub curve. You will have
some failures right away, followed by a period of low, random failures. Then
the failures will increase may level out again at a higher rate or may
continue to climb. Somewhere after this initial climb is the MTBF point.

Some items like light bulbs follow a very predictable curve. Take a 1000
hour light bulb, for example. You'll have a few fail early on, much fewer
fail over time but then when your 1000 hour light bulbs start reaching 1000
hours, they start dropping out fast.

Other seemingly simple items like your Mercedes alternator are really made
of components, each with its own MTBF rating. The front bearing, rear
bearing, regulator, rotor, stator diode block each have their own MTBF.
I've had a couple of Mercedes alternators rebuilt by a local shop, only to
have a front or rear bearing fail later. Why? Because the shop only repaired
what was broken, the diode block and / or regulator. But the bearings were
not replaced even though they were well into their service life and they
reached their end of life failed.

Thanks,
Tom Hargrave
