More ideas to check out - thanks.

Any theories as to the intermittent/unpredictable/short lived nature
of these incidents?

Have you checked for loose belts or related hot bearing? If you have
a hand held pyrometer, you could stop and check to see if any
of these items are running hot. I had a similar problem on a 240D with
a bad idler pulley bearing. Couldn't figure it out until the bearing froze

and smoke started coming up from around the hood.

Then last night took a long RT to Columbia, MD (25 miles each way).
On the way out, at milepost 10 I got hit with a rich smell of burnt
engine air. This lasted 5 minutes before going away! On the way back,
at 9 PM, I drove in both highway and stop and go traffic using the
same ACC settings as the earlier trip. The smell never came even once!

I am beginning to think I am more in need of a compression test on the
exhaust system, as this is a DRY smell that IMO is not sweet enough to
be coolant. I do not have any coolant leaks under the hood, and my
thinking is that if the heater core were leaking the smell would be
more or less continuous. Therefore, the episodes of smelly air are
caused by the fumes entering through the outside air intake (the two
grilles beneath the front w/s) that are controlled by something
episodic... Unless something else is possible?

IS the engine really clean? If not, clean it really well. Next time
you smell this, pull over somewhere and inspect everything closely to
see if there is any little drips of something hitting the exhaust, etc.

In my experience, once the heater core is contaminated externally, you will
never get rid of the smell unless you remove it and wash it. At that point you
can pressure test it directly.

I had a smelly heater core in a VW, I removed the core and pressure tested it
and it didn't leak. What I suspect is that a PO put stop-leak in the system
after the leak started, sealing it. But the smell remained until I cleaned the
core. Actually I just replaced it because I didn't want to deal with any later
problems.

2012-04-25 Thread Allan Streib
Yes, the ACC does switch between "more" and "less" outside air but it's always
drawing _some_ outside air.

In max AC mode it would be mostly recirculating.

I don't agree that a pressure test would identify a leaking core. The leak may
be very small, but enough to produce a detectable smell. Also if the heater
valve is not open when the pressure test is done, the core is isolated from the
rest of the system.

Well, obviously, there are no guarantees, but, if it won't hold
pressure, then it is leaking somewhere. If you cannot see evidence of

One other alternate idea might be to disconnect the heater core and

Test YOUR theory by taking a sample of all the fluids from your car
and heating them up on your stove. If any of them are responsible

switch between outside and recirculating air and if so, when?

And does everyone agree that a pressure test of the cooling system
would definitively either rule out or implicate a leak in the heater
core?

I'm pretty sure I didn't remove the steering wheel. I don't
recall having to open Freon lines, but that car did not have a
functioning air conditioner so I may have just forgotten.

Someone set me straight on this please, isn't the cabin air taken from the
air box that resides behind the battery tray? Feed of fresh air comes from
the grill just below the wipers? There is an access hole from that air box
that drains into the engine compartment but it's only about 1.25 inch
hole.. just the right size for a mouse to find shelter and build a nasty
smelly nest.

Could your problem be from this airbox being comtaminated with critter

Just a thought, might be worth pulling the cover/screen/grill off and
having a look?

pinhole leak or something. The only way to deal with that is to replace
the heat exchanger. Have fun.

I was driving one day in the fam's 67 Buick Skylark and sitting at a
light it started belching coolant down in the passenger footwell.
ruhroh. I pulled over somewhere, found a payphone and called my dad to
tell him and ask what was going on. He says the heater core is leaking,
needs to be replaced. Luckily I was just down the street from a pretty
good gas station/repair shop (we had no cell phones back then but
actually had gas station repair shops, imagine that!) so I drove it in,
my dad came to get me, they replaced the heater core for not much
money. It was actually pretty easy to get at them up under the glove
box, if you were something of a contortionist. I ended up changing one
in some other car I had, not a lot of fun but doable.

Didn't you have a pretty good leak on an SLS hose? Perhaps, if you haven't
power washed the engine, it is still burning off and polluting the air.

The heat exchanger is a small radiator filled with the same anti-freeze as your
engine. The mono-valve controls the flow of hot coolant to the heat exchanger.
The fan blows outside air across the heat exchanger and into the cabin.

Testing the heat exchanger is same as testing the radiator: pressurize the
entire system, and if the pressure drops, you have a leak.

Test YOUR theory by taking a sample of all the fluids from your car and heating
them up on your stove. If any of them are responsible for your smell, then
you'll know which system is leaking.

What is my prize? How about your vote for Mittens this fall?

Well, they're not leaking. I stil think this smell is generated from
a liiquid burning on a hot surface. Logically, it's either

1) an oil, PS or SLS fluid, or antifreeze leak under the hood that
emits a noxious smell when the engine warms up. The odor is somehow
drawn into the air intake. This seems unlikely because the rubber
gasket (seal) running across the top of the firewall is intact.

2) the air picks up the odor after encountering the WARM heat
exchanger. How exactly does the heat exchanger work anyway?

The smell of antifreeze is quite distinctive, sweet, not "burnt" to my
mind but perhaps you might think so. Remove the coolant tank cap (with
a COLD engine) and take a whiff. Is that the smell?

Either the one that takes the coolant to the heater core(s) or the one
that takes the coolant from the heater core(s), or, if the valve(s) are
inside, one of the hoses connected to it (them).

You will smell a tiny leak - not enough to visibly drop the level in the
tank, or run enough to see inside the car.
What then? Either put up with the smell until it does get really bad, or
replace the leaking part - hose or heater core.

Just for grins, are you sure your HVAC drains aren't clogged? I'd describe
that smell more like a swamp (vs charring) but clogged drains are common and
they do cause a smell.

You will smell a tiny leak - not enough to visibly drop the level in
the
tank, or run enough to see inside the car.
What then? Either put up with the smell until it does get really bad,
or
replace the leaking part - hose or heater core.

Re: [MBZ] W123 1985 300TD ACC (heating system) 101

2012-04-23 Thread Scott Ritchey
Makes perfect sense to me: pressure test it. If you don't have one, you
should be able to borrow a cooling system pressure tester from AutoZone,
etc. Typically, they charge you for the tool and then refund your money
when you return it. I found this particular tool so useful I kept it, but
then I had three 20+ year old cars at the time.

Pressure test the system. Find out if it holds pressure. If not, then it
is leaking somewhere.

Stick some pine tree mirror decorations down in the vents, or you can go
the full ME cabbie route and get the gold crown with various scents to
set in the middle of the dash. There are also some little cans they
sell at El Mercado de Wal that have a gel sort of scent in them, and
they last for a coupla months.

Well, the smell came back on a trip this afternoon when I stopped at a
light. I popped the hood and there was nothing going on - no leaks,
burning smell, or any indication of trouble. So it appears that the
smell is being generated inside the system once fresh air has entered
the car through the intake.

Excellent suggestions - thanks. As a palliative I emptied half a can
of Lysol into the air intakes and ran the defroster until the cabin
smelled like faux lavender perfume. This probably won't solve my
problem but could buy me some time.

It's common for engine compartment smoke to leak out the
trailing edge of the hood and get sucked in by the cabin air
intake.

Maybe not a crack, but there are a lot of intentional holes -

Guck on heater core cooking off? You're definitely sure it
does not smell like hot antifreeze?

1) Where is the intake for the outside air?

Grille under the wipers. Is your hood lid seal intact?

3) Could oil somehow have been interspered inside the vent system,
which might cause a burning smell to emanate when warm air passes
through the interior duct work? If so, how could that be addressed?

Disassembly and cleaning? Would be nasty.

4) Could there be a crack in the firewall that allows engine smells to
pass inside the car (doubtful)

Hole can rust behind battery.

typical of so many W123 diesels -but when I pop the hood I cannot
detect the same sooty smell that emanates from the air ducts.

The first onset of the smell seems t start after the engine is warmed

2012-04-20 Thread Scott Ritchey
1. If memory serves, the intake is the grillwork between the back of the
hood and the windscreen.
2. The blower uses a fair amount of power and could have hot spots, such
bearings.
4. Holes in the firewall under the battery shelf are common.

I believe this ACC system has a temp switch on the engine that inhibits all
heat functions (except defrost) until the coolant reaches about 100 degrees
F, as I recall.

I'm not sure what s sooty smell is.
