Diesel. I couldn't find where they had a more specific pricing that didn't

Re: [MBZ] Craig's New Ride -- StopStart

2014-11-13 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
Speaking of electrics and such, I noticed a coupla weeks ago sitting at
a stop light next to a GLK that the motor was shutting off, then
starting again when the car moved. The driver kept creeping forward so
the car must have stopped and started 4 or 5 times while sitting there.
That surprised me. Then last week I was at a light next to a new S and
same thing, the engine stopped and started. With both cars it was very
quick to start, barely a turn of the crank it seemed. Is this the new
fuel-savings method Benz have implemented? Must be killer on the starter
and battery. Wonder what those cost to replace?

My acquaintance said that their battery was not covered under warranty, which
was one of the motivations for dumping it.

They bought it new, I know that much.

I'm curious how you arrive at this conclusion. I've been keeping tabs on
"new" car prices (fallback if the van fails and I don't have Wilton's SDL
reliable), all base MSRP for 2015s off manufacturer web sites:
TDI Jetta: can't find a price with the TDI, didn't look too hard
TDI Jetta Wagon: 26565
TDI Passat: 33585

Prius 2: 24200
...three middle models...
Prius 5: 30005

The back seat on the Jetta is really too small for all the children, so I
was mostly looking at the Passat until I saw the price for the TDI
upgrade. Also, diesel here is consistently between 60c and 90c more
expensive here than regular. Personally I'd rather have a Camry hybrid
(26790 (vs 22970 for non-hybrid)), but the Prius family is really not a bad
deal given the market.

Now, why we can't import baby diesels like they have in India I don't quite
understand, but given the family situation it's really a moot point for me
anyway. :)

Tim

To be honest, if I were a few years younger I would probably have bought a used
Jetta diesel or even driven my '83 300D on long trips and repaired them myself
if they broke down, but at my age I wanted a car that got 40+ mpg on the
highway, had an extended warranty, a large number of dealers nationwide, and a
very good repair record. Also, since the car will mostly be used locally, the
50+ mpg/city of the Prius made it the best choice.
If a person is lucky enough to have more money than time left to spend it when
they retire, the price of their car is not the most important factor.
There are some things I don't like about the Prius (their seats might as well
have been made of wooden boards), and the drivers space is cramped.
Since the resale price for clean Prius' is one of the highest, I might wind up
with a different car entirely.

Not if the price of diesel up there is a dollar more per gallon like it is down
here fairly often. Besides that VWs break down a lot oftener than Prius'. I've
searched the 'net and can't find a DIY Prius list that describes anywhere near
the range of repairs that the usual VW or Mercedes list does. Find me a Prius
DIY list that compares to this one and I'll save my 300D for you until spring.
Might even drive it up there and meet you at my BILs farm in SE Pennsylvania.

G: Friend has been happy with a Volt for several years. Since it's a plug-in he
gets very low cost-per-mile and he's had no repairs after 50K miles.
On road trips he gets mpg in the low 40's.

G: Son has a Ford Fusion hybrid that got 37 mpg at 70 mph on trip from
Nashville to Orlando. When I drove it, the mpg pattern on the display was
similar to the mpg pattern on the Prius. It probably get something less than a
Prius locally since it's a heavier car. At 100K+ miles he has some sort of
noise the mechanics can't identify, so he's waiting until he buys the next set
of tires; tires being a common cause for such noises.

G: Nearly all speed limits in this county are 45 mph, so I drive around at 50

When I was in college, there was an old Diamond T for sale at the
shevey dealer. $1700 Paint was not as nice, but it was very clean
burning and complete. At the time, I wanted to convert a moving van
trailer to a "mobile home" and then have a tractor to move it around
or drive in the rain. (BMW R75 for fair weather)

Talked seriously with a friend about going into business, but could
not run interstate because neither of us were 21 at the time.

Yup, they certainly must be!

It really is pretty, except for the blacked-out areas on the doors (they
should have used the green color).

The article says, "Engine isn’t mentioned, but these were powered by a
variety of gas and diesel inline sixes and V8s."

But the craigslist ad says, "fuel : gas."

It's a little far from me, and I'd be concerned about parts availability.
I've seen much newer tractors much closer for about the same price. (I do
recall one of those listed as 800,000+ miles.)

Driving a Prius into a Starbuck's drive through. Can't get any more

Would love to see a Jeremy Clarkson run over a priapism in a unimog.

I'd buy this just to mess with the herd of Prius drivers at the local
Starbucks drive through.
