You will get what you pay for. I bought a $40 ball joint tool set, bent the C-clamp on the first real job we tried (replacing W126 ball joints, a royal pain). I just spent $180 on a Specialty Products ball joint tool set that looked identical, but this time the clamp stayed true even though we really pulled on it. A friend of mine bought an AC vacuum pump from them, then spent the rest of the day looking for the oil for it. Nice pump, but no vacuum pump oil in the store, no sign that it was necessary, the whole thing was a pain. It's worked well for me so far, though I only use it on my own cars, maybe a couple of times a year tops. In a shop environment where it would see frequent use it may not be a good choice. I have never tried their hand tools, though. I'm hoping they are at least a step above Wal-Mart tools, but if they are not at least it's not a lot of money ventured. I'm guessing for moderate-to-low torque applications they will be fine for my purposes. I bought a crapsman metric set with combination wrenches and 3/8 and 1/2" drive sockets in the 70s. I have never complained about the sockets. In fact I still recommend buying a crapsman 1 1/16" deep socket for injector holder R&R. The combination wrenches, however, were another story. The box ends have such a thick wall that they won't fit many places. A far cry from the older tools my dad had. I just happened to look at the current crop of crapsman wrenches at Kmart today. The crapsman stuff is still thick walled, but they had another line, that is highly polished to look like Snappy's overpriced stuff. Those had a nice looking box; WAY thinner than the crapsman set. If you make your living with your tools, then buy Mac or SK or Snappy or any good brand. If you are like me and only work on cars as needed, then the HF stuff is very well suited. I have been unsuccessful getting snears to replace any "Lifetime Guaranteed" tool for the past 30 years. Every time I took something back to HF, it was replaced without drama. I think I have taken back only 2 things, and one was a corded drill that burned out within a year. I did not buy the extended warranty. I still have some crapsman junk that should be exchanged if anyone wants to volunteer to try. I now use mostly all Master Mechanic (True Value) and HF tools. The MM are good tools, and they have been good about replacement of broken things. You will get what you pay for. I never believed I got the quality I paid for with crapsman tools. With a few exceptions, I have gotten what I paid for, or more from HF. Re: [MBZ] First experiment with HF tools
Some of the HF stuff seems OK, I bought a set of long combo wrenches to get up in some spaces on my house addition where I was setting some lag bolts and nuts, they seem nicely balanced, well-polished, and did the job. I have some other kinda specialty stuff I got from them (some "star" sockets, not sure what they are called, like reverse torx). With HF stuff I try to stay away from stuff with more than one moving part, but I did get a vac pump (it had oil) and a recip saw for $20, which I have used quite a bit and I am surprised it has performed well. But for $20 I have low expectations so a disappointment would not be disappointing. All that said, the Lowes Kobalt stuff is pretty nice, I think better than sears. I went over to Sears the other day for like the first time in 2 years to get some staples for my 30yo stapler, and all the tools were no longer in those display cases. I was surprised. And the guy there was very helpful, almost too much so. --R On 9/18/11 4:30 PM, Dieselhead wrote: I bought a crapsman metric set with combination wrenches and 3/8 and 1/2" drive sockets in the 70s. Re: [MBZ] First experiment with HF tools
Every tool is different but I've had some EXCELLENT luck there. For regular combination wrenches there is no better deal on the market than HF's 9 piece set. So far I haven't broken a wrench or in fact damaged one in any way. To get the caliper bolts off my MBs I put the wrench on the caliper bolt and then raise the other end with my floor jack. Occasionally the wrench slips off with a *SPROING* but mostly it just takes the bolt out... Compare to Craftsman at 2x the price, the Craftsman are not polished and just don't feel as good in the hand. I've also got a couple sets of HF sockets, the only complaint I have is the laser etching can be kind of hard to read. Otherwise again I've never hurt one or had it round a bolt. -Curt Date: Sun, 18 Sep 2011 15:31:09 -0400 From: Allan Streib To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: [MBZ] First experiment with HF tools Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii I just ordered this from HF: http://www.harborfreight.com/7-piece-38-drive-metric-long-reach-hex-bit-socket-set-67890.html My last customer service experience at Sears was so bad that I'm going to try something different. Re: [MBZ] First experiment with HF tools
10mm 6 point is hardly a "special socket". Pro mechanics use 6-point unless the bolt or nut is a 12-point. I don't like the Craftsman combination wrenches either. Craftsman sockets are okay until you have some slip off the nut or bolt and their ratchets are junk. Snap On tools cost more, but fit better, work better, and feel better in the hand. Re: [MBZ] First experiment with HF tools
I finally bought an SK ratchet on Amazon as I was so tired of my Crapsman 1/2" locking up and not ratcheting or slipping into the wrong direction. Though it was 2x the price the SK is 4x the tool of the Crapsman and a real joy to use. I finally used my ring pliers (forget the real name) to pull the ratchet out of the Crapsman unit. Realized immediately that there wasn't any grease in there... It must have been oiled at one point but theres no trace of that now. I have all 3 common sizes, 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" all with the same problem. I'm now experimenting with what to use to lube them properly, the 1/4" got some heavy gun oil. 3/8" got some white lithium grease and the 1/2" got regular grease from the grease gun. It'll be interesting to see what happens when it gets cold out... -Curt Date: Sun, 18 Sep 2011 15:30:04 -0500 From: Dieselhead <126die...@gmail.com> To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] First experiment with HF tools Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" ; format="flowed" I bought a crapsman metric set with combination wrenches and 3/8 and 1/2" drive sockets in the 70s. S-K used to be found in good hardware stores in independent FLAPS. Since the walmartization of autoparts, they are close to unobtanium locally. IF they are as good as they used to be, they as good as anything Snappy ever ripped someone off for. If you can find a S-K rachet from the 60s, it is probably the best you will ever find. Brian Toscano wrote: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SK_Hand_Tools "In 1985 SK became part of Facom Tools." So that's why I started noticing warranty trouble in the spring of 1986. Just minor stuff, the girl at the hardware store, instead of handing me a new tool, spent ten minutes looking the tool up in her warranty book and inspecting it for 'signs of abuse which would negate warranty' before handing me a new tool. I said 'my warranty paperwork from ten years ago says 'unconditional lifetime warranty', she said 'if I don't go by the new book we won't be reimbursed' and I said 'so long, S-K'. I have bought a S-K flare nut wrench since then, after paying too much at a FLAPS for a 'Made in USA' Cal-Van that never would have passed Harbor Freight's quality control. Charging S-K level prices for tools that are uglier than Craftsman on the outside is one thing, when the tool is too ugly to use on the surfaces that grab the fastener, it's unacceptable, so Cal-Van earned a spot on my 'avoid for life' list over 20 years ago over that little $11 line wrench. Well, it wasn't really 'warranty trouble', as my entire 1/4" S-K set was in mint condition, but if it were scratched up, the hardware store would have been afraid to accept broken items. My parts manager wanted a 10mm wrench to install a battery she'd sold, so I gave her my S-K 1/4" driver with a 10mm socket on it, figuring there was no way she could damage brass battery screws with that. She told me the handle slipped when she gave it back. Yes, a 135lb girl had turned the plastic screwdriver handle hard enough to spin it on the shank, with her bare hands, and the hardware clerk was somewhat paranoid about exchanging it, although she did eventually decide there was nothing S-K could blame me for. Just the idea that my 'unconditional lifetime warranty' had suddenly beome unconditional after ten years meant it was another 8-10 years before my next S-K purchase. My experience is that I can embarrass the Sears people into honoring the warranty. If you stand at the checkout and repeat "Do you mean that the Craftsman warranty is just bullshit?" when a customer is there to pay up it will pay them to give you a new tool. That being said, some of the HF tools are perfectly serviceable. My general rule with them is that their Taiwanese tools are generally better than the ChiCom ones. Their Pitman arm puller is total crap. I would suspect any similar tools are also crap, break on first attempted use. Sockets and breaker bars are very good. Re: [MBZ] First experiment with HF tools
HF has honored everything I have ever taken back, including socket that split that I clearly drove on with a sledge hammer. Not only that but you can HAGGLE an extended warranty on everything that doesnt have a life time warranty. -Rolf On 09/18/2011 03:31 PM, Allan Streib wrote: I just ordered this from HF: http://www.harborfreight.com/7-piece-38-drive-metric-long-reach-hex-bit-socket-set-67890.html My last customer service experience at Sears was so bad that I'm going to try something different. I've almost always bought Craftsman tools, even though I think their quality has declined over the years. The last tool I wanted to buy (a stubby 3/8" ratchet handle) was in a locked rack. So I had to wait for over half an hour for the ONE slow-as-molasses, dim-witted salesperson in the tools dept. to finish helping the two people who were there before me. I've never tried HF hand tools before, but for the price and ease of online ordering, I'm going to give them a chance.
