Some brands of progressive lens can be had with a transition corridor as tall as 18mm. OmniLux is 22mm. Progressives are like no-line trifocals. Most of the induced astigmatism (swim) on the sides is due to the two spots where the transition is somewhat abrupt. OmniLux is a continuous (but not linear) transition from 20 to 1 foot. You still get the bad areas on the sides but they aren't riddled with astigmatism. The good zone on a progressive is hourglass shaped, with the top part (full distance vision) as wide as the lens, the bottom part (reading zone) much narrower, and the good zone at intermediate range is practically a pinpoint. The good zone with OmniLux is funnel shaped. Again you have a full width 20' zone, and then it gets narrower as you get down towards the bottom of the lens. I have what I was told, ten years ago, was a very aggressive form of AMD. Aggressive in that there was no evidence of it in an exam then at the next exam it was like, whoa! I’ve been taking the generic/Costco version of the Presservision and I look at the grid on the fridge every morning for about 10 years and things are going well. Yeah now that I think more about it, my friend who was complaining about it could have had the surgery covered, but implanting corrective lenses was the part that was not covered, as that was considered "cosmetic." He had the droopy eyelids too, and got those fixed. The eye doctor prescribed Preservision vitamins to see if that arrests the AMD in 6 months. I have Rxs for lenses to correct the diplopia. I will try Costco. It was mainly due to aging, as expected. I see her once a year, and for the past 3-4 years my prescription has barely changed, mainly refinements to my distance vision. I’ve worn progressives from the start, and have learned that it’s important to have “tall” lenses so that the transition isn’t too “quick,” for lack of a better description. When “thin” styles were all the rage I tried a set and quickly realized these would not work for me. That latest pair of glasses I ordered and returned to Zennie has disappeared into a black hole. The operations were a success, but the planned result was what the surgeon thought the patient should want, not what the patient actually wanted. My new optometrist said "I hate when they play God". I want perfect binocular vision, and if I have to wear reading glasses, so be it. My wife has had cataract surgery, isn't really happy with the result, but it's better than it was. Medicare A took care of 80% and our supplemental insurance covered that last 20%. The Dr declared it medically necessary, so no issue. There was a cocktail of eye drops they recommended that wasn't covered because we don't have part D, but it was ~ $70 - no problem. In several situations I see better than she does now, but the Dr wants me to get the cataracts out - but then he's the surgeon as well. I think I'll find an ophthalmologist who doesn't do the surgery for a second opinion. Not quite true. Medicare Parts A & B cover the diagnosis and treatment of cataracts when it has been deemed “medically necessary.” That’s the catch. In other words, you’ve probably got to be close to legally blind before you qualify. Shirley had cataract surgery on both eyes. Her experience was no doubt complicated by her long-term Type 1 diabetes and by an irritated and uncooperative retinologist for her second eye. After the cataract surgery, the back sides of her lens capsules clouded and caused her to be unable to see well. She ended up having laser surgery where they made X cuts in the back sides of the lens capsules, which caused the points of the cut portions to curl back out of the way so she could see again. All that considered, the cataract surgery was helpful for her. Yeah, while I was scrolling through the various values for my script I saw at the end of the ranges there were some serious upcharges. Never noticed that before. And I’ve rarely gone for coatings, as I’m not convinced they’re worth it other than for UV and glare. The “blue light from computers” stuff is silly. Mitch, I just did mine on their website up and to the upload of my Rx, and it was only another $10 for the Omnilux over “regular” progressives. I’m going to wait to find out what the determination is on my glasses with Zenni that are being “reviewed” before I do anything, but I will check into these. I just went there to try to price my lenses, and got hung up at "upload my Rx", wouldn't let me select material and coatings to get the price until I upload. Will try again when I'm ready to order. If the price comes out too high I'll contact them and ask them to price-match BestNewGlasses.com. Zenni has long been the standard for Chinese opticians. One of the youtube optometrists said he's gotten it right from Zenni all but once, when it was wrong frame, wrong Rx, and he assumed it was somebody else's order. Costco has a great guarantee, and prices are about 10% higher than Zenni with a real fitting by a real optician. I just re-joined Costco Sunday so I could order PAL, computer and sunglasses, getting $50/pr off the 2nd and 3rd set. But the Costco optician I talked to was a bit hesitant to fit progressives to a strong Rx 60 year old who had never tried progressives. Then I remembered reading that optiboards thread on OmniLux and started an email discussion with the Quest rep who responded to that thread. The big drawback to Costco is the good lenses are all PAL and single vision, and their in-store frame selection is limited, at least in my size. Their bifocal and trifocal mostly aren't even available for my Rx, and they're all CR-39 and polycarbonate, both of which would be thicker than coke bottles if their lab were willing to produce them. The web site I want to get the OmniLux lenses from tells me to mail the frames to the same address as the guy I'm talking to from Quest, which invented OmniLux. Keep us posted, at least I’m interested. Our eye doctor was a neighbor lady who always did a great job for us. I got my eyes checked right before we left FL and then orderd some new glasses from Zenni, who I have used in the past and been happy with. When I got my new glasses (progressive lenses as always) off the new prescription, the very top part of the lens where I would be using distance vision was out of focus more thna about 8-10 feet away and farther. I ordered two pairs, and both were that way.
