Many large corporations with proprietary software will not upgrade
since their software (for things like maintenance scheduling, parts
ordering, and personnel management) will NOT run on Vista or Win 7.
It took the company I consult for until three years ago to upgrade
from Win 2000, I don't anticipate a migration to Win 7 any time soon.

I thought OSX ran 32b except for apps running in cocoa or whatever it's
called? Isn't one of the big features of snow leopard a 64b kernel?

According to Redmond Magazine today, M$ will allow buyers of "higher end"

Windows 7: You Can
Go Back
When Vista came out, many new users clamored for the right to move back to
XP. Unfortunately, going back wasn't always easy and wasn't usually free.
With that lesson in mind, Microsoft
just announced
that new Windows 7 customers will have a year-and-a-half to move back down
to XP or even Vista (however, the plan only applies to high-end versions
of Windows 7).

While this is a nice gesture, I think downgraders will be few and far
between -- maybe just those who depend on that random app that Windows 7
chokes on. What would make you want or need to go back to XP? And would
there ever be a reason to move from Windows 7 to Vista? Answers readily

Now that I think about this it sounds bogus. We were using HP desktops
downgraded to XP a year ago that had SATA drives in them.

Have you low level formatted the drive and started from scratch?

Get a Mac and run whatever Windows operating system you want XP, Vista,
etc., using BootCamp or a virtual machine like Parallels or Virtual Box (free!)

I just set up XP under BootCamp on the youngest's 17" C2D iMac, as his XBox is
in the shop and he had some Windows games he wanted to play.

2009-06-20 Thread E M
I'm pretty much a computer idiot. This is my second pc, a HP running
Vista. All before were Macs. It's been a real pain trying to pull stuff
off the old PC, granded, it is OLD. I'm thinking, next comp, to go back to
something like an iMac 24", maybe run something like Ubunto or XT for a
second very occasional OS, and keep the drive pretty much empty and free.
I'll keep most of my stuff on external drives, and just by more of them as
needed as they're so cheap, and makes going between comps easy in the
future.

Re: [MBZ] OT Win 7 FWIW

2009-06-20 Thread LarryT

OK, here's what happened -

I have tried everything. Formated a new HD (after trying the old HD), but
Win did not recognize *either* drive present. I used the both drives in an
ext enclosure without problem. Did a full format and tried again - same
problem. checked the BIOS instructions and there is *no* switch for OS - no
mention of anything OS related. I did a LOT of research while
looking...hoping it would be that easy.

Toshiba is no help at all. I went to Intel to find the proper HD Driver and
then used nLite to integrate the driver into my XP install discs. Still did
not recognize the HD - same problem, no change.. Maybe Intel gave me the
wrong driver? Anything is possible.

I am slowly getting used to using Vista - it is slow and cumbersome - "used
to" is not the same as "liking it".

I'm beginning to think I have what Dave Walton referred to << non-standard
drive controller, you are screwed
until they come out with drivers for XP.>> Why would they develop drivers
for XP? MS doesn't even support it anymore.

It's a Toshiba Qosmio F45 Laptop. It's not a bad machine - 500GB HD and 2
GB RAM but Vista is like an anchor around its neck.

Part of the problem is MS wrote the backdate to XP specifically hard to do.
When drivers are needed you must press F6 (no problem so far) but then you
must install the HD Drivers from a *floppy* drive. How many people have
floppy drives? A USB will not work nor will a CD. Only a floppy.

Tell me MS didn't do that on purpose? They are so friggin arragant that
they decide what OS I must use - no matter what I want. Then they put
roadblocks up to prevent using what I'm happy with, and educated on.

Just found out yesterday Vista Ultimate is not compatible with my full
versions of Roxio or Nero! 2 more programs (that were not cheap) I would
have to buy *new* versions of if I wanted to be where I was before buying
this POS.

As I work to get my Acer (with XP) back up to speed after being repaired, I
plan to save all of my stuff, wipe the disc and install Vista to it's "out
of box" state - then sell it on eBay. Maybe this won't be a total loss.
Luckily I can use my SATA ext. enclosure to cut/copy/paste anything needed
to my Acer. The biggest problem is the SATA 50GB HD will not fit in my
Acer - it has ATA conns. I can use it as an ext storage device but that's it
for now.

Next time I need a laptop I will look at Macs as suggested - as long as they
run Win PC software or have an equivilent. I refuse to buy new SW just
because a sw designer adds some bells and whisltles. Especially after
spending hours reading a manual that looks like a dictionary. Don't need to
go thru that pain again.

Not even going to consider Win7 next year - too irritated with the way I was
treated - no matter how good it is supposed to be.

Thx for letting me vent .

Now that I think about this it sounds bogus. We were using HP desktops

Have you low level formatted the drive and started from scratch?

That seems strange to me as my 3 year old Dell desktop has

not being compatible with XP or driver problems?

Microsoft has extended support for XP to sometime in 2014 last I checked.
A USB floppy will work so that you can load drivers via F6 when
booting the XP install CD - unless their USB controller is
non-standard as well.
DeepBurner.com has free burning software that will replace some of the
functionality of Nero.
I suspect Vista will be orphaned like Win98-ME was. Unfortunately
Microsoft has said there will be no upgrade path from XP to Win7. Go
figure.

Those programs are widely available free on the net - search "OpenSource" &
you will likely be amazed at how many programs are available. From a
lookalike MS Office Suite to Access, Design Programs (like AutoCadd) and
others.

OpenSource is proving very popular -- it's updated from time to time and
will always be free. I'm becoming more & more of a fan as my MS Office97
Pro Suite becomes less functional due to other hardware/software issues.
But one of the IT people at work gave me a copy and I figured I'd get all I
could from it before I had to learn something new.

But I learned on Office 97 and am happy working with it for the time being.

Good idea - glad you found it -

2009-06-20 Thread Russ Williams

Larry,

Try installing the hard drive in your external enclosure. Then hook it up
to the lappy and boot up your XP CD see if it sees the hard drive.
If it does then do the install. External drive enclosures have their own
SATA
controller. If you are LUCKY and this works then reinstall the hard
drive into

lappy.
Now your second round of head bashing will come.
Did Toshiba write XP drivers for that system? If not you are going to
have a lot

more FUN. Vista Drivers WILL NOT work on XP.

BTW there are USB Floppy Drives out there. The last one I bought was 30
bucks.

I used the above method on a Gateway lappy that had the same problem you
have

been running into. The Gateway did have the XP drivers so it was fairly easy
after the OS was installed.

Good Luck
Russ W. (I HATE VISTA too)

Not really, but you can re-partition it and create a new file system.

Low level formatting has been a thing of the past for at least 20
years now. All modern drives have one surface used as a servo signal
for the heads to locate the tracks -- that head cannot write to the
disk.

Any chance a slipstreamed SP3 CD would install to it?

The symptoms are different than what I've been getting with my 1TB drive.
I installed SP1 onto the drive (it formatted to 127GB), then upgraded XP to SP3,
and used Linux to redo the partitions. I then tried to use my factory restore
disk to install Vista on another partition, but instead of asking me which
partition, it just threw out the partition table, reformatted, and installed.
Say goodbye to the XP installation, and even the partition that XP was installed
on.

I fixed the partitions again after the Vista install, but XP SP1 can't install
because it doesn't recognize the disk as partitioned.
Today I slipstreamed a XP-SP3 CD. Hopefully I can install THAT on a blank
partition of my 1TB drive tomorrow.

Yeah, factory restore disks make it "just like it came from the factory,"
which isn't what you want.

What does "slipstreaming" a CD mean?

FWIW, when I got a second disk for my work Dell laptop and wanted to have
the main disk as Linux and the second one (in a removable drive bay) as
WinXP, I had to shut the computer down, take the computer apart, remove
the first disk, install the second disk, boot the computer and install XP
on the second disk, shut the computer down, swap disks, put the second
disk in the removable drive bay, plug it in, and reboot the computer (to
Linux). M$ doesn't make it easy or play well with others.

Problem is that the older OS must be installed first for a dual boot
system using 2 M$ os's. That means you need a "real" Wissta install cd.

One possible workaround is with wista installed, run a linux install
cd and do the partitition stuff then install XP from within the linux
install utility. Red hat used to let you do that in the NT4/2000
days. Maybe some of the linux wizzkids can chime in and give current details.

Slipstreaming can be used to add any patch to an XP/2003/2008
install, and presumably Wissta. It is a good tool to know

2009-06-21 Thread LarryT

Hi Russ,
Thanks for the help! I'll give it a try. But I think the problem you
mention about having the proper HD Driver is something I have yet to
conquer. Toshiba's website says they do *not* provide HD Drivers - they
then direct people to the motherboard maker (Intel for me) to find a driver.
I followed the instructions at Intel and downloaded the driver they say is
the correct one. XP didn't communicate with the HD though. So, either the
driver provided did not work for XP as advertised or they gave me the wrong
driver.

I'm trying to remember if I tried to install XP in the Ext Encl - I've
tried so many things they all blend together after a while. But it's no big
deal to try again. Either XP will see the HD in the encl and allow
installation or it won't. I find it odd that the ext encl has appropriate
drivers for the HD but the lappy cannot use them! I guess there's more
involved. Also, the ext encl (made by BlackX - which is very nice) has a
pressing need for drivers - intel probably didn't forsee a need for XP
drivers thinking all would love Vista! Ot they were told by MS to go in that
direction. LOL - that would be typical of MS operations - ie to put as
many roadblocks in place as possible..

Maybe I'll spring for a USB floppy - I have tons of floppies and no way
to read them except in my desktop - Hmm $30 eh? Hard drives cost less than
that! Haha!

Oh well, at least you've given me something to consider - much more than
the Microsoft Techies can do - they seem to see what I'd like to try and
then say, "Yeah, try that." The MS technical dept is not very impressive. I
guess the Indian Universities didn't teach MS technical assistance. ;-\

Take care -

Larry,

Try installing the hard drive in your external enclosure. Then hook it up
to the lappy and boot up your XP CD see if it sees the hard drive.
If it does then do the install. External drive enclosures have their own
SATA
controller. If you are LUCKY and this works then reinstall the hard drive
into

lappy.
Now your second round of head bashing will come.
Did Toshiba write XP drivers for that system? If not you are going to have
a lot

more FUN. Vista Drivers WILL NOT work on XP.

BTW there are USB Floppy Drives out there. The last one I bought was 30
bucks.

I used the above method on a Gateway lappy that had the same problem you
have
been running into. The Gateway did have the XP drivers so it was fairly
easy

after the OS was installed.

Good Luck
Russ W. (I HATE VISTA too)

LarryT wrote:

OK, here's what happened -

I have tried everything. Formated a new HD (after trying the old HD),
but Win did not recognize *either* drive present. I used the both
drives in an ext enclosure without problem. Did a full format and tried
again - same problem. checked the BIOS instructions and there is *no*
switch for OS - no mention of anything OS related. I did a LOT of
research while looking...hoping it would be that easy.

Toshiba is no help at all. I went to Intel to find the proper HD Driver
and then used nLite to integrate the driver into my XP install discs.
Still did not recognize the HD - same problem, no change.. Maybe Intel
gave me the wrong driver? Anything is possible.

I am slowly getting used to using Vista - it is slow and cumbersome -
"used to" is not the same as "liking it".

I'm beginning to think I have what Dave Walton referred to <<
non-standard drive controller, you are screwed
until they come out with drivers for XP.>> Why would they develop
drivers for XP? MS doesn't even support it anymore.

It's a Toshiba Qosmio F45 Laptop. It's not a bad machine - 500GB HD and
2 GB RAM but Vista is like an anchor around its neck.

Part of the problem is MS wrote the backdate to XP specifically hard to
do. When drivers are needed you must press F6 (no problem so far) but
then you must install the HD Drivers from a *floppy* drive. How many
people have floppy drives? A USB will not work nor will a CD. Only a
floppy.

2 more programs (that were not cheap) I would
have to buy *new* versions of if I wanted to be where I was before buying
this POS.

As I work to get my Acer (with XP) back up to speed after being repaired,

By using software such as nLite (www.nlite.com) the installation disc (XP

the new files are integrated with the installation files. Then the contents

Great idea, so thanks again to you and Wilton. Wonder if I can drop all the
old HDs from my Macs into the external, and dump the mp3 movies from those

done here today, and transfer them to the new Mac, then onto an external
drive.

That link was what saved me, Larry. It seems you can't slipstream XP install
files unless you are running the computer in XP. I believe there's a way to boot
in command mode from an XP install disk, but you'd need to compile the
slipstream on a hard drive that the XP disk can recognize. I just booted up on
my old XP hard drive and integrated SP3 on that drive.

Microsoft products don't read Mac. The trick is to get an empty
external drive and dump the Mac data onto a PC formated drive (Drive
Utility will format an external drive with either FAT32 or whatever
the new extended format is). Your Mac should happily copy files onto
the disk (or, if they are small enough, onto a flash drive -- just
leave it in PC format). You should then be able to copy from the
external drive onto the PC.

Thanks Peter. Problem is, some of these Mac's are now so old, using USB on
some of them is a problem, that's why I was just pulling the howl HD and
sticking them in an external drive to load into the newer comp. Once I have
everything in one place and sorted, I'll then dump it all onto an exteral TB
drive or something for easy use with this or future comps. I then plan a
big comp cleanout!! lol

If you want to use XP you need XP drivers for ALL your hardware. You're right
they probably won't develop drivers for XP but that is NOT Microsoft's fault. I
really hate how you keep trying to put this on Microsoft. Its Toshiba's fault
for not using a standard drive controller.

When XP came out floppy drives were still pretty common. My HP nw8000 laptop

You've got that one backwards, Roxio and Nero don't support VISTA. This is no

The Toshiba Laptop I bought in late march has Vista Ultimate.  I have been
trying to install my copy of XP Home wince early April when I decided the
"improvements' MS made when creating Vista made it impossible for me to live
with Vista.  Since then I have been progresively moved up the Help Chain
getting more and more experienced (and less and less knowledgable)
"experts".  None seem to know how to install XP onto a SATA Hard drive -
even the *new* 500GB HD I bought specifically for this purpose.

Hey Larry,

Just wanted to say, tried the suggesting you and Wilton used, to swap
files

from and old HD over to my new pc. Was a snap. Stuck the drive from the
old pc running Win 98 into an external, plugged it into my newish Vista
machine, and few mins later, all done. I spent hours messing with memory
sticks, trying to find drivers for old 1.0 USB connects, etc.

Great idea, so thanks again to you and Wilton. Wonder if I can drop all
the

old HDs from my Macs into the external, and dump the mp3 movies from those
drives, onto a pc machine? One way to find out. lol

 Can I skip slipstreaming SP1&2?

As far as I know, if you download the full SP3, which was 200+MB, and
slipstream it to an install disk, the result is a full install disk with
all

updates through SP3.

I don't know about nLite, I think that software automated the slipstream
process or most of it. I just did it manually with the instructions
here.

After I send this, I'm going to disconnect my existing XP and Vista
drives, and try to install the slipstreamed XP on my new 1TB disk.
