Re: [MBZ] Speedtest.net Mobile Result

2012-06-07 Thread Curt Raymond
A couple years ago my phone would quit every time it rained, strangely my DSL
modem worked all the time.
Verizon scheduled a guy for the next day but I caught a lucky break and they
sent him out that same day.
He saw that the connector box at my house was very old and decided to run a new
wire. When he got up to the pole he said "Heres your problem!" and tossed down
the cable for me to see, there was about 1/2" of insulation missing and the
water would run across the two wires. I don't know why the DSL would still work
but that sure explained why the phone quit.

He put on a new box and helped me run about 3 feet of wire into the house as
the old brittle phone wires kept breaking as we tracked into the house...

Do you have buried service, overhead drop, or utility poles with your service
buried? I had the same problem and there was a nick in the wire's insulation at
the pole. Customer service was of NO help, until I looked on the web site and
got the VP's email addy. I told him if my service didn't get fixed, I was going
to switch to cable. I got an apology email, the region managers cell number,
and it was repaired within two hours. Complaining works, if you bitch
tactfully, and to the right person.

LTO5 is something like 1.6 TB/ tape, and it wouldn't be too hard to fit 1000 of
'em in a decent sized station wagon, like say a 300TD (obligatory MB content)
and you can make DC-NYC in 4-5 hours...

That's about 8.9e5 MBytes/second (8.9e6 Mbits/sec)

But one heck of a large BDP (bandwidth delay product)

After about 4 weeks of flakey DSL recently, I finally got our ISP and
CenturyLink (was Qwest) our DSL provider on a conference call. I called
CenturyLink's DSL service number and then asked for a State-side
technician. Once I got the fellow, I asked to have our ISP on the call,
too. He called them and then we proceeded to check things. I have three
Cisco 678 DSL modems and had swapped the active one out the day before,
so he was satisfied it wasn't a modem problem.

After running speed tests, he agreed it was a line problem and dispatched
a technician for the following day. If the problem was in my wiring, I
would owe them an $85.00 service call. If the problem was in their
wiring, I would not.

Since I put a Corning splitter in the customer interface box and had a
home-run cable directly to an RJ-12 connector into which our modem was
plugged, I was fairly certain it was not my problem.

The technician eventually found the problem was the connection between
the main cable and our house drop up on the pole by the street. He said
he touched one of the wires and the joint fell apart in his hands. He
fixed the connection and things have been good since.

I had Verizon for years and never was able to get mine fixed. Frontier took
over their land line service and everything changed for the better. Native
English speaking customer service, corporate emails posted on their web site,
etc.

Sounds like the initial short-out was dealt with by the pump-out, but the
water that wicked back up the lines is finally causing them to corrode away
to nothing.

Be sure to isolate it as a line issue first, by unhooking everything else
after the phone drop, putting modem as first device.

That may mean a long phone cord out to the box as a check.

I know Verizon will try to prove the problem is in your house wiring, since
then they don't have to fix it.

We have Dish Network for TV service, which as I understand it has a
lot in common technically with satellite Internet service. The Dish
receiver gets unhappy whenever there is heavy rain, snow, clay
pigeons, flying saucers, or basically anything fairly solid in the air
between the dish and the satellite.

I used to tell people that FedEx had near unlimited bandwidth, and was
in many cases faster than any network. They looked at me like I was
some kind of weirdo. They might have been right about that aspect, but
I was right about FedEx.

Ping on my speed test results is all over the map. You can always run a
few pings to live sites, especially if there is a data center in your area.

You would notice this kind of lag if you used VOIP regularly, it's like one
of the television announcers and the remote reporter: it works, but you
tend to interrupt each other when you want to switch sides.

Tim

The "ping number" is called latency. With satellite, latency is
always very high because of the very long trip to the satellite
and back. A geosync. orbit is about 22,000 miles up, so a round
trip is over 44,000 miles - approx the same as two complete
circles around the planet on the surface. This results in a
delay of about 238 milliseconds just for the round trip.

This latency is the bane of geosynchronous satellite service -
but sometimes it's worth it.

With latency that high the best you can do is to try to keep the pipe at less
