Of course this is all useless to the O.P. because you
didn't include a link to a HOWTO.

pkg_add looping bug

2010-04-19 Thread Luis Useche
(Sorry if you received this email before with the wrong FROM address)

Hi Guys,

Today I decided to give -current a try and probably find some bugs. I hit my
first bug when I was updating my packages. For some reason, pkg_add start
consuming full CPU and there was no progress. I re-ran pkg_add with -v with
the hope to find the problem. I could track the bug until pkg_add:1069.

Below you can find the (long) output I was able to get. At the end pkg_add
continously loop between the packages: glib2, fam, exo, and desktop-file-utils.

I also was able to check that the @todo2 array is always increasing.

Any help will be appreciated,
Luis.

There are a bunch of assumptions here that are wrong.

Small tasks are the most fun to do because they satisfy the instant
gratification needs all of us have. I won't give you my list of the
"fun and easy stuff", I want to keep it to myself. The lists that are
published will contain "dull, heavy and not very important" tasks. The
kind that gets you burned out the quickest.

Also, todo lists have been published in the past leading to either no
reaction whatsoever or a bunch of people offering help and vampiring
the energy from whoever published the list without leading to any code
committed. It's easy to become slightly bitter about the whole thing
after spending hundreds of hours helping people who then don't follow
through when they realize that it actually requires work.

I have a Kingston, it has behaved very erratically (and currently lost its

I've done no research into this, but a similar problem is there. I found
formatting it would work for a few days (but didn't want to try harder than
that for just a USB drive).

So, um, this sounds like a done thing. You've got a server that

As I saw a commit to trunk(4), upgraded to the latest snapshot.

kern.version=OpenBSD 4.7-current (GENERIC.MP) #188: Sat Apr 17 16:12:03 MDT 2010

the config has changed, but only real interfaces were changed (em[01]
-> bnx[01]). I had to do this due to other requirements.

A small improvement is, double MASTER state doesn't happen any more.
Still, both nodes can only enter either MASTER-MASTER or BACKUP-BACKUP state.
Failover works, IP balancing doesn't.

sudo - protected directory

2010-04-19 Thread Frank Bax
The first example in 'man sudo' shows how to list files in a protected
directory:

sudo ls /usr/local/protected

I am not sure how I would search the contents of files found in such a
directory, for example:

$ sudo ls -l /var/spool/mqueue/
total 8
-rw---  1 root  wheel  2031 Apr 17 02:54 dfo3H6qkaT024430
-rw---  1 root  wheel   936 Apr 19 18:22 qfo3H6qkaT024430
$ sudo grep . /var/spool/mqueue/

How do I get some output from this grep command?

Add your custom /etc/security file to a file called site46.tgz and it
will exist at install time. :-)

This is an ugly hack (and one that I'll have to keep performing with

I guess this would encourage people to code, usually the first step is
the hardest after you code some stuff you can can usually walk by

For example, Claudio once said that not needing a route for multicast

todo-list could speed things up IMHO.

I also know he (as every developer) is busy with more important

developers more time to focus on the big/important issues.

No, I'm not trolling, just an idea.

You are going to get a negative response. Which is too bad.

We all have to start somewhere.
OpenBSD kernel plus userland plus ports is a really big playing field.
It is also a very big field of different skills of many kinds.

I have seen "Stop your whining and submit a patch!" a few hundred times
at least on this list.

I recently "whined" about something I saw as broken, trying to be
helpful. When that wasn't enough, I spent several hours figuring out
what was needed in two ports to get their man pages and also figured out
that their perldocs were also broken. It was harder than I thought, but
I learned many little pieces of information. I was able to submit a
patch for each one, and was able to get a fix upstream on another, my
patch was used upstream.

Pretty small potatoes, but I did it because I "knew" something was
broken. Us newbies NEED to know what is broken AND is at our level to
learn how to fix. I needed more help submitting a correct diff than with
fixing the actual problem. I did not need anyone to help me patch!

todo-list could speed things up IMHO.

I also know he (as every developer) is busy with more important
things, so "publishing" these small tasks would also give the
developers more time to focus on the big/important issues.

No, I'm not trolling, just an idea.

Radius Auth and Insecurity Outputs

2010-04-19 Thread Andrew Klettke

Hello all,

I'm having a (cosmetic) problem with a couple of OpenBSD boxes that are
using RADIUS authentication.

When I install the OS, I create a local user with local authentication.
After the box's network config is all done, I then change the login
class of the user to so I can use RADIUS, by modifying
/etc/master.passwd with `vipw', so it looks like this:

(removed):*:1000:10:radius:0:0::/home/(removed):/bin/ksh

The problem then occurs when /etc/security runs, as it gives the
following output:

Checking the /etc/master.passwd file:
Login (removed) is off but still has a valid shell and alternate access files in
 home directory are still readable.

This login is being used successfully with RADIUS, all is working as
expected, I just want to get rid of this error. Any input?

Re: can't do suitable block in firewall

2010-04-19 Thread Leonardo Carneiro - Veltrac
I use the Openfire xmpp server. But adding new contacts via a msn
gateway is a real headache. I'm thinking about moving to ejabberd.
Anyway, what i really need right now is to setup the selective redirect
to the msn so some users go through the msn-proxy, some just go, and the
rest just don't go :)

running usbdrvctrl under 'ktrace -i' and examining kdump output
might give some clues.

one possibility is that you may need more than just ugen0.00;
try ugen0.*.

last time I tried a usbhid-ups I had 'port = auto'. not sure if
that's required but you could try it.

To a new-comer like myself, that seems like an excellent idea. I know
developers are busy and synchronous meetings would be tough, but if it were
possible, asynchronous mentoring using a TODO list would be nice.
 (Definitely a big wish though... :-) ).

What arch are you using?

What do:

$ which cvs
$ ldd `which cvs`

show?

What do ktrace cvs/kdump show?

Re: Source Overview

2010-04-19 Thread Christiano F. Haesbaert
I know this has been discussed before, yet I call for your attention.

This post seems like a genuine attempt on getting pointers on starting
hacking in OpenBsd. I remember doing the same a while ago.

How about having a very simple per-developer(or project) wish-list/todo-list ?

I guess this would encourage people to code, usually the first step is
the hardest after you code some stuff you can can usually walk by
yourself.

For example, Claudio once said that not needing a route for multicast
addresses would be nice, but that's somewhere on the mailing lists
archives so very few people are aware of that, having it explicit in a
todo-list could speed things up IMHO.

I also know he (as every developer) is busy with more important
things, so "publishing" these small tasks would also give the
developers more time to focus on the big/important issues.

No, I'm not trolling, just an idea.

Otto,

thanks for the heads up... I got confused. It didn't occur to me
that that might be coming from the server itself...
Why would someone see an error message from the server like that? Is
that normal behavior?

Sorry for the noise...

Yes, it is normal for cvs not to distinguish between client and server
generated errors. No, this is not a normal cvs server setup. Better
send a message to the maintainer of that machine.

Hi Lars and others. I already have a XMPP server on my network, and it
replaces MSN in almost every task, but the gateway features does not
work 100% yet (at least in the server that i use). For this, i still
need MSN for some tasks, which is the point of the rules i'm trying to
setup.

Tks again

If lld says cvs is pulling in libc 53.1, my guess would be you're
looking at an error message from the cvs server. And indeed, I'm
getting the same error for anoncvs.usa.openbsd.org. Try another
anoncvs server.

Your machine is fine; the problem is on anoncvs.usa.openbsd.org.
Indeed, that message is sent from the remote cvs server. Use a
different anoncvs server for now.

I have pulled install47.iso from the main site (ftp.openbsd.org) twice
today, and received the same issue. Both times... I deleted the first
.iso, and then re-downloaded it.

In my case, I did a fresh install of the 17 April snapshot, so there isn't
any contamination with older installed versions. Again, I haven't had the
chance to track this down further.

can't do suitable block in firewall

2010-04-19 Thread Leonardo Carneiro - Veltrac
Hi everyone. I'm trying to get some control of the MSN protocol in my
network.

My OpenBSD firewall has 4 interfaces: 2 lan, 1 wan and 1 dmz.

What i'm trying to do is:

1. Allow some hosts to use MSN;
2. Redirect the MSN connections of some hosts from the LAN interfaces to
a MSN proxy in the DMZ interface;
3. Block the rest.

This is how i'm trying to achieve:

# msn proxy redirect
rdr on $lan1_iface proto tcp from $msn-redirect to any port 1863 ->
$proxy
rdr on $lan1_iface proto tcp from $msn-redirect to any port
25000:3 -> $proxy
# msn filter
pass out quick on $inet_iface inet proto tcp from $msn-redirect to
$proxy port 1863 keep state
pass out quick on $inet_iface inet proto tcp from $msn-allowed1 to
any port 1863 keep state
pass out quick on $inet_iface inet proto tcp from $msn-allowed2 to
any port 1863 keep state
pass out quick on $inet_iface inet proto tcp from $proxy to any port
1863 keep state
block out on $inet_iface inet proto tcp from any to any port 1863

All hosts but the $proxy are in the $lan1_iface, the $proxy host is in
the DMZ. I'm doing NAT in the $inet_iface (wan interface).

The thing is that this is not working. Any host can connect to the MSN.
If I switch "block out on" for "block out quick on", then no one, even
the allowed ones, can connect. What i'm doing wrong?

Tks in advance, and sorry for my poor english.

I can vouch for the same behavior. I installed the 17 April snapshot
omitting game47.tgz. Attempted to download source via AnonCVS & got the
same error. ldd shows that cvs expects libc.so.53.1 (which is in
/usr/lib...), but I didn't chase down who is expecting libc.so.51.0.
Another snapshot was released late last night, but I haven't had the time
yet to see if the same behavior persists.

The problem is the libc your cvs binary is looking for, not the
libraries you have.

Either you installed the wrong base tarball or aren't running the cvs
binary you expect.

Try upgrading to the same snapshot again.

# mixerctl inputs.mix_source=micyes, very quiet

# mixerctl inputs.mix_source=mic2   no sound
inputs.mix_source:  -> mic2
# mixerctl inputs.mix_source=dac-6:7no sound
inputs.mix_source:  -> dac-6:7

Their is nothing plugged into the line-in. Eventually, I need the line-in to
work.

Thanks for any help!

How Do you Tell the OpenBSD Installer to install to a logical partition?

Same as to install to a primary partition - make sure the partition exists
and is of type A6, don't tell the installer you want to use the entire disk
and it'll handle most of the rest.

Reset USB device

2010-04-19 Thread Peter Van Overschelde
Hello,

I don't know if this is the right list to post my question to, but i'm going
to give it a try.

My problem is as follows:

At work I'm working on a project involving a 3G USB stick.
Now, the USB stick (ZTE MF 626) wasn't recognized by the umsm driver, but
after searching
on mailing lists and google, I found that the stick can be recognized by
patching the umsm source file.
So I patched the umsm source file (basicly adding the USB ID of the modem).

All that works perfectly, I can make connection and such, but sometimes, the
USB stick "dies"
No connection anymore, and it's not even showing up in the list when running
usbdevs.

My question is:
Is it possible to reset the USB stick or bus (I think that could fix it) or
is there any other way I can solve this problem
without any manual intervention or rebooting?

Kind regards,

Peter

Very nice!

It was not "Of course" to me since I vagely recall some BSD's MBR could
boot from extended partitions so that could have been how you did it,
but have heard stories about Windows restoring MBRs it does not recognize.
And you might have used Grub in some interesting way...

But yes, EacyBSD and Vista bootloader was my first guess,
and now it is confirmed.

Again, very nice and thank you for sharing!

I did most of the partitioning in Windows, setting up a primary partition

Either the NetBSD or OpenBSD media can then be used to edit the partition

Another Option. Assuming a i386 or amd64 PC:

1. Put another hard drive into the computer.
2. Go into the BIOS and make the new hard drive have higher priority.
3. Boot the computer and install OpenBSD onto the new hard drive (Run
dmesg to be sure you're doing the right thing)
4. When you want to go back into the other OS, change the drive priority
in the BIOS and reboot.

Not pretty, but it works and keeps drives separate and no fooling with
grub, partitions, Windows boot loader, etc.

I do this or slip in a GAG CD and don't save to hard drive for computers
that I rarely use Windows on.

For computers that need to regularly use two or more, GAG is reasonably
convenient when installed onto hard drive.

I haven't tried it on Vista or Win 7. DOn't really plan on ever having
those unless they come pre-installed on a new or used computer.

If you're going to take /that/ approach, I would suggest a trayless SATA
caddy from someone like Icy Dock (be careful - some of their products are
garbage, but I can attest that the trayless, fanless SATA caddy is not).

You can easily swap the drives in and out without faffing with BIOSes.

I use precisely that method for swapping in test systems.

First, I want to be clear that I'm not complaining about this, just
informing. I'm as excited as most to see this progress with ACPI.

Second, as I say above, one of the processors is in 98-100% interrupt
state after the machine resumes. However, that's only while X is
running. When I leave X it drops to around 40% and returns to ~100%
when I start X again.

Thanks!

Does it? This is my setup:

Interesting...

What MBR do you have that can select to boot from one of two
bootable partitions? Or do you use the Windows bootloader
to boot OpenBSD? Or is it GRUB at 7138/0/1?

I would be interested in some more details...

Of course I boot using the Vista bootloader and easybcd to edit the
configuration, which saves a lot
of headache. The important thing is it can be done.

Interesting...

What MBR do you have that can select to boot from one of two
bootable partitions? Or do you use the Windows bootloader
to boot OpenBSD? Or is it GRUB at 7138/0/1?

I would be interested in some more details...

2010-04-19 Thread Jens Teglhus Møller
Hi (sorry for top posting)

Beeing totally clueless about this except having played a bit with some
other usb toys recently (separate thread about that) i would say that ugen
is not uhid, if the driver expects an uhid device it will probably not
work with ugen.

Best regards Jens

Problem using nut/usbhid-ups driver

2010-04-19 Thread Jon Sjöstedt
Hello all!

I have a brand new APC Smart-UPS 750 that I want to use with my OpenBSD-box.

So far I have:
* Installed the nut package nut-2.2.1p0 using pkg_add
* Added user _ups to the daemon group
* changed group for /dev/ugen0.00 to daemon (was wheel)
* Created this ups.conf file:
[ups-closetmonster]
driver = usbhid-ups
port = /dev/ugen0.00
desc = "UPS APC Smart-UPS 750 for server closetmonster"

When I try to start the usbhid-ups driver, it always fails:

$ sudo usbhid-ups - -a ups-closetmonster
Network UPS Tools: 0.29 USB communication driver - core 0.32 ()

debug level is '4'
upsdrv_initups...
No appropriate HID device found
No matching HID UPS found

Any ideas appreciated!

Some details:

$ dmesg | grep ugen0
ugen0 at uhub3 port 1 "American Power Conversion Smart-UPS 750
FW:651.18.I USB FW:7.4" rev 1.10/0.06 addr 2

$ usbdevs -vd
Controller /dev/usb0:
addr 1: high speed, self powered, config 1, EHCI root hub(0x),
NEC(0x1033), rev 1.00
  uhub0
 port 1 powered
 port 2 powered
 port 3 powered
 port 4 powered
 port 5 powered
Controller /dev/usb1:
addr 1: full speed, self powered, config 1, OHCI root hub(0x),
NEC(0x1033), rev 1.00
  uhub1
 port 1 powered
 port 2 powered
 port 3 powered
Controller /dev/usb2:
addr 1: full speed, self powered, config 1, OHCI root hub(0x),
NEC(0x1033), rev 1.00
  uhub2
 port 1 powered
 port 2 powered
Controller /dev/usb3:
addr 1: full speed, self powered, config 1, UHCI root hub(0x),

Time slices are also used on non-real time systems, like OpenBSD.

Many scheduling algorithms use the fact if a timeslice has been used
up (as opposed to not used up because a process entered a state waiting
for some event like user input to happen) as an indication to decide
if the process is cpu bound or IO/user (interactive) bound.

That information is used (indirectly) the pick the next process to
schedule, how that information is used is a matter of policy, there is
no general rule to decide what is the best scheduling method. But
often batch processes get a lower priority, to favor interactive
processes.

There is a load of information on this available. Scheduling
algorithms are well-studied. I suggest you take a book on OS design
and study that.
