[MMouse]: Philadelphia show (05/22).
This was my first time seeing Modest Mouse and it was fucking amazing. It was sold out and seemed to last over two hours. The setlist is as follows and is *not* in order, except for the encore which is right on. I'm literally going through the Modest Mouse discography and typing out the songs they played as I see them; Broke Whenever I Breathe Out (Positive/Negative) Dramamine Breakthrough Custom Concern All Night Diner Doin' The Cockroach Trailer Trash Trucker's Atlas Polar Opposites Neverending Math Equation 3rd Planet A Different City Alone Down There Paper Thin Walls What People Are Made Of Encore (this is in accurate order): Grey Ice Water Cowboy Dan (extended version) Tundra/Desert Although I have no other Modest Mouse shows to compare this to, it seemed great to me. The sound was off for the first quarter of the show (the volume was oddly low), but everything got smoothed out fine. The band seemed in high spirits. Etc. Very fun. As I was walking out the door, I saw a girl that looked familiar, and I asked her if she was on the Hot Modest Mouse Girls page. She laughed, said she was, her friend said "you're famous!" I just checked out the page and it turned out to be Barbie. Wasn't expecting that. Barbie, if you're reading this, sorry if I caused an awkward moment! I couldn't stop myself from asking. A more detailed account is likely on its way. I'm tired and there's really not much more to say about it except that I had a fantastic time. - Matt

It's weird...when i saw modest mouse, i didn't even notice Isaac's lisp until one of my friend's pointed it out. I used to always notice it on the albums, especially teeth like god's shoeshine, but i guess that, after a while, i just got so used to it that it was no longer a speech impediment. -matt

In my experience when someone says this about a musician or group of musicians it is because the person is not familiar with the genre of music. I know that its true with me. For a long time I thought that all hip-hop music sounded the same but now I realize that my prejudice against hip-hop was just my own unfamiliarity with the music. It might also have to do with the fact that Califone's music is more about subtlety than Modest Mouse's music is. Tyler

i'll jump in and just say that while their song 'the city' is one of my *FAVORITE* songs out there right now, i'm kinda lukewarm about the rest of their stuff. but, eh, i've only listened to the rest of that cd a couple of times. maybe it'll grow on me, as was the case with modest mouse. are any of their other cd's listen-worthy? The albums preceding 'Emergency I' (which are 'The Dismemberment Plan is terrified' and '!') are mandatory listening for anyone following the modern era of rock n roll. However, during the time period between ...terrified and emergency, something magical happend..travis learned to sing !! it really shows on Emergencycompare standout trax from 'terrified' suchas, ice of boston, doing the standstill...with anything from emergency, and you cannot get the same level of pure sincerity. Emergency I is one of the most profound albums to come out in the past few years and it will be a major influence on any significant musician to emerge in the near future. it seems the d-plan get lumped into the 'emo' category by default. They play with alot of the bands associated with emo... as already pointed out, but they cannot definitively be classified as emo. I would go so far as to say they are in a genre completely of their own making. Songs like 'The City' with its keyboards swelling into valhalla, and that drum breaking yr back as you swing yr body in motion with the tingling guitar. And to see them live, dancing, moving those hips to every pulse pounding beat. travis beckoning for some brave soul to come up front and breakdance.ah, dear god, is there a better band on the planet ? Bringing influences as far ranged as hip hop to classic rb to, dare i say, prog rock, the d-plan meld the sincerity and enthusiam of life into their music and it shows. how can one deny the power of the d-plan ?! ok ok the music is very good, and different, but the vocal harmonies and what not, they all had nearly the same feeling. The philly show was definitely an experience, and it seems like every show I go to, the new guy playing guitar fucks up a song. I have only two questions, 1) how could you not sing along to trailer trash(which it seemed 90% of the audience wasn't doing) and 2) How could you not dance during cowboy dan(which it also seemed like 90% of the audience wasn't doing). Modest mouse was great, the crowd was really boring. That version of cowboy dan they played was by far the high point of the show, completely blew me away. I could barely make out the crazy guitar parts in tundra/desert, and there was no awww shit to anchor me. There was one part of the show, where issac was flooded with blue light, and sort of turned his back to the audience...I saw one kid up front snap a shot of him..that would be an awesome picture. I have never seen a crowd so afraid to touch one another. Mark anticipatory causation is resperatory. Blieb immer locker. PS..I am sorry to those in front who got hit by that would be crowd surfer, he asked and I obliged...it seemed like a good thing to do at the time.

Just to build the momentum a bit more... I've seen the Plan 3 times on this tour and every show was fucking rad; from the now-famous sold out show at the middle-east in Boston (probably one of the 3 best shows I've ever seen) to their show at the Skinny in Portland, Maine (playing for a crowd of about 10 people) they rocked the Casbah and split the diff. Travis is totally nuts; he has this look in his eyes when he's performing that makes Isaac Brock look postively boring in comparison. Add to that the fact that D-Plan crowds are the coolest around and Eric is one of the nicest band members you could meet (perhaps second only to the mighty Robert Nastanovich) and you have the makings of the most vital act in music today. If your looking for a reason why more indie rock boys and girls don't hook up, there it is. Boys and Girls need to dance, that's like an essential part of the mating process, especially in big loud places where the normal forms of communication aren't terribly effective. Everywhere people were dancing at the show there were huge gaps on either side of them..for a sold out show that was the *least* crowded I have ever seen the tla, with perhaps the exception of a tkk show I saw there however many years ago. id like to think that singing/musical expression makes everything better...like if you are singing you wont stutter...but im sure theres some explanation like with the air flow..but look at TOM HARRELL..hes a trumpet player...and his schizophrenic...and when he plays hes totally normal and has no problem with it...and his schizophrenia supposedly makes him able to play better...or purer they say. oh well. on a not very related note...i think davey from promise ring would make a better lisping side kick than travis.

If I had heard your shrill femme-chords shrieking out "talking shit" one more time I'd have had an aneurysm. - Matt i was about to have an aneurysm, too. that screaming was really obnoxious and it was obvious isaac was at least somewhat pissed about it. i've seen him make asses out of people like that before, so i guess he was just being nice that night. as far as pretty sunset is concerned, you can cry and scream all you want, but isaac said in early 1997 that he would never play it because he doesn't know it anymore. he said in lancaster that he's halfway through re-learning it, but until then, people don't have to be rude about it. the philly show was amazing...the longest set i've ever seen them play. mr. ferrari was a nice touch. i know some people on this list were talking about ticketmaster being a rip-off...i had a ticket that i got through ticketmaster that i ended up not needing for the show. the ticket was $11 and i sold it to a guy on the street who didn't believe that i paid $18.80 for it. so he only gave me 15. whatever, i took what i could get, but i was mad that he was so bitchy to me when i was doing him a favor by giving him a ticket. that's all for now, hezi Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
