[MMouse]: riverfest in noho!!!

2000-09-23 Thread Matt Evanosky

hey is anyone else going to riverfest in northampton mass, on sunday...???

you don't know about riverfest?

its going to be all day show at the 3 county fairgrounds from 12-8pm on
sunday 9.24.00

who's gonna be there?

this is where the excitement comes in .
juliana hatfield- she rocks like yr mom
ben harper- he's actually pretty cool
sonic youth- at home in western mass, they left the cityscene, come sprawl
on the lawn w/ the kids
and hold yr baggy pants, sleater-kinney

that's right, f**kin sleater- f**kin kinney
you only wish yr sister was as cool as these women... at least i did, if i
had a sister...

thats pretty much it, i think theres other stuff, but news on the show has
been pretty low-key... i think mainly because modest played

[MMouse]: value and savings!!!

2000-08-28 Thread Matt Evanosky

hey list boys and girls!!!

does anyone here know about www.swapit.com ??

its like this online used record store, where you can get rid of yr crap!!!
and the best part is there is no postage on anything you send to them...

their prices for buybacks are pretty fair, no worse than most real life
stores, and no snotty guy looking down his nose at yr cherished copy of the
first new edition cd, signed by bobby brown or biv and devoe...

anyway, its kinda cool, but the sucky thing is , there are not too many
records available to shop from, with yr credits... i have been hard pressed
to find anything really even remotely must-have...

this is why i beg of you to at least check it out... you get some kind of
credit just for signing up... like 10 bucks or something...

if it sucks, you can take turns spanking me like the naughty boy that i
am...

easy to deal with and I have no idea if we'll get to do the other two
records. Stayed tuned to our website for further info.

Re: [MMouse]: RE: M&A Vinyl??etc

2000-06-16 Thread Matt

>Other giveaways to the cheapness are how they always use the
>same standard labels on the records and also lack of gatefold albums

The Black Heart Procession 3 Song recording has a nice picture on the side
that has no music.
but, it's the only non-standard graphic I have ever seen on an Up LP.

My main complaint lately with vinyl is definitely the packaging. Lack of
gatefold, and/or lyric/info sheet is definitely crumby.

I really do miss the days when records came with posters/lyric sheets/phone
books/kitchen sinks/etc
Not that there are not some great packagings out there..
Award for best packaging ever has to go to Godspeed You Black Emperor's
f#a#(infinity)
that thing comes with a PACKAGE.flat candian penny, flyers for shows,
cryptic writings, prints of locomotive engines, etc

ah pretty pictures to look at !!!

and whats the deal with the moon and antarctica being priced at
$17.99even the swell indie record shops are selling it for this price.
i'll buy it tho, as i've already downloaded all the songs from napster and
burned them on cd months ago...just wish there was more incentive to buy
the lp other than supporting the band, etc.

vinyl packages are like boxes of cereal. they should excite us to rip open
the box/sleeve and delve in for the special prizes but even cereal has
gone downhill. nowadays you have to collect 50 proofs of purchase and mail
them to whomever to redeem whatever is probably out of stock anyway.

argh

The albums preceding 'Emergency & I' (which are 'The Dismemberment Plan is
terrified' and '!') are mandatory listening for anyone following the modern
era of rock n roll. However, during the time period between ...terrified and
emergency, something magical happend..travis learned to sing !! it
really shows on Emergencycompare standout trax from 'terrified' suchas,
ice of boston, doing the standstill...with anything from emergency, and you
cannot get the same level of pure sincerity. Emergency & I is one of the
most profound albums to come out in the past few years and it will be a
major influence on any significant musician to emerge in the near future. it
seems the d-plan get lumped into the 'emo' category by default. They play
with alot of the bands associated with emo... as already pointed out, but
they cannot definitively be classified as emo. I would go so far as to say
they are in a genre completely of their own making. Songs like 'The City'
with its keyboards swelling into valhalla, and that drum breaking yr back as
you swing yr body in motion with the tingling guitar. And to see them live,
dancing, moving those hips to every pulse pounding beat. travis beckoning
for some brave soul to come up front and breakdance.ah, dear god, is
there a better band on the planet ? Bringing influences as far ranged as hip
hop to classic r&b to, dare i say, prog rock, the d-plan meld the sincerity
and enthusiam of life into their music and it shows. how can one deny the
power of the d-plan ?!

son, have i got a story for you,
as far as indie cred goes, eddie v. has a little, and at least tries to do
the right thing...remember when their last big-ass tour came round, they has
lots of medium to small types bands play with them, most notably the
mudhoney

and then while everyone is thinking about that, remember on the eMpTV
unplugged show with the pearl jam, towards the end when eddie climbs up on
the stool and scrawls FUGAZI on his arm, you know why, cause he's
punkrawkthats why

i am sure , its more about big business, and epic and all that, but

interestingit brings up the S word --no, not sassy, i mean sell-out...in
this forum, the way i see it is, and by the way, i may be paraphrasing a
bit from something i think i read in an interview once, so anyhoo i
think if hank rollins wants to do a nortel commersh or a photo for the
gap...then fineif he believes in the product then super...but more
importantly, if he makes X dollars doing something for the man, and then
puts that money into his publishing or record label to release something
really left of center, how is that wrong?
mr. rollins puts out a wide line of books as well as records from many
diverse artists and authors, you can't think that he makes that much money
from rollins band or the residuals from the chase

anyway, if superchunk wants to do a british knights jingle or looper gets
used on the x-games promo, look at it as them being able to pay for their
art, instead of having to scrape by and suffer...

the beauty of low is the sheer simplicity of the sounds. to remix the low
seems to be an exercise in futilitylow is as near perfect at what they
do as any band right now...are they better than mogwai? no, i have a hard
time with turning music into a competition, they are both good at their
"sound".
the mogwai remix records are great because of the varied approaches to their
songs..i mean come on, hood ,3rd eye foundation, alec empire, arab strap ,
all remixing yr record, one could do much worse...

loud/extremely quiet/too f-ing loud, they actually are traders in sound and
noise...this brings up the noise for noise's sake argument, but hey...

demise of the indie world because built to spill or elliot smith gets played

1999-08-09 Thread Matt Evanosky

actually, its really not farfetched at all
andy richter is quite the newyork scenester...he interviewed pavement a few
months back for some online zine...he hangs w/ the upright citizens brigade
on the comedy central, and they like the indie rock too. superchunk song
was played last week, and one of the cast had a blues explosion shirt on and
one had a yo la tengo shirt on...
conan gets quite a few of the indier bands on..
aside but still on the subject, anyone ever see chumbawumba on leno
show...corporate white oppressor, they all had shirts with crazy slogans
like government sucks / socialism now... i dont remember them all, but it
was kinda surreal..they played on the view once too, i think...

[MMouse]: stupid conan show

1999-08-07 Thread Matt Evanosky

stupid me, i watched it friday night in hopes of seeing greatness by way of
the mouse or something else, considering it was indie rock week on conan

instead i saw train

not happy, that's me

[MMouse]: random thought #45

1999-08-04 Thread Matt Evanosky

so i am sitting here thinking, and a don caballero song comes on the
radiowho is the more powerful machine?

helmet or don caballero???
before you answer indy rock style and say don cab, think for a bit
i am talking early helmet, you know amrep helmet and for this thought the
meantime record as well, not the jazzy cocktail helmet that gave us betty.
i mean seriously ,who is stronger? don cab is all about motion and
strength. they remind me of a precision german auto, with funny song titles
to boot. helmet , very powerful in their own right...rhythms as if
programmed by a drum machine, chugga-chugga riffs and they are quite
photogenic

not mouse related, but i think very timely for summertime thinking...
