I knew it, and I told you this would happen.  Some people just
simply cannot refuse trying to get the last word in.  Obviously JR
is one of those people.

For the love of God, please let's MOVE ON!
I feel as though I've been getting my ass kicked by Mike Tyson
here.  And he just WON'T STOP!  Cursing, pleas for sanity,
nothing is working!!

You already cued the death rattle sound effects.can we get along
with the actual death?  Can we please, please make this the
absolute LAST post on the subject? If we can't have peace in Iraq, can
we at least get peace on a movie poster list for crying out loud?

Do you get my point?

Please?

This is making Baby Jesus cry.

Re: [MOPO] Best Universal Horror Classic poster?

2006-09-20 Thread Ron Moore
Okay, so in all honesty I have had way more than my
share in great poster finds over the years- but I've
really hit the roads over the last 30 years to find
them. One of the first finds included both style
Pinocchio one sheets from 1940 for 50 cents each!
Along with 3 Superman serial one sheets- I had to
cough up a bit more for those. But for the best find
of all... Sue will like this one!

Back in 1992 I tracked down a rumor regarding an
original Mummy one sheet. Now, I didn't really believe
it was real until the guy who knew about it told me
that next to Karloff's image the poster said, "It
Comes to Life!" Well, you coulda knocked me over when
he said that. It took me another 6 months to finally
locate it and when I did... well I was expecting to
see the regular Mummy one sheet- you know, the one you
always see pictures of. The one Borst owns that's in
his book Graven Images! But when I went to this guys
house, there on his living room wall was the other
style Mummy one sheet! The one no one in our hobby had
seen before. For once, my usually stoic poker face
slipped! The owner would not even discuss selling it.
So, I asked where did it come from.

I really had to dig into this mystery and it went all
the way back to 1959 when the poster was located in a
small town outside of Chicago. Apparently there were
lots and lots of posters stacked inside of a junk
dealers barn. Out of that find- a gentleman had kept
2 She Done Him Wrong one sheets, a Ladies They Talk
About one sheet, and (Hey Doug Taylor- here's where it
came from ) an original All Quiet On the Western Front
one sheet! I was able to acquire them all. What
happened to the rest of the stacks of posters, I was
never able to find out. oh well

After another agonizing 6 months, the owner of the
Mummy one sheet finally let me buy it off of him. It
was one of the best days in my entire poster
collecting life. The happiness was short term though.
I was inundated by phone calls from auction houses,
people offering me cash in briefcases, calls from
people I didn't even know- and they knew where I
lived! The calls were coming in 3 to 5 times a day. It
got to where I would walk by the poster, hanging
magnificently on my wall, and I just couldn't stand to
look at it anymore. After 6 months of harrassment, I
sold it. So much for what could be one of the
greatest, if not the greatest, posters in our hobby!

There have been lots of more finds since then. I love
the hunt!

2006-09-20 Thread jbirddouglass
I made a run on a couple of book stores in Hollywood when I was on
vacation with my parents back in 1966. I went to see Malcolm Willits at
Willits Books, and I stopped by the Cherokee Bookstore. Both stores let
me go crazy looking through all their stuff. I had exactly $25 to spend,
and walked away with a one sheet from THE DEVIL COMMANDS, three mint
lobbies from ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, a rolled half sheet
from SCREAMING SKULL, and several assorted AIP lobbies & pressbooks. It
was a very happy day in my warped little adolescence. (Wish I had all
that stuff now.it'd be a very happy day in my warped middle age...)

Bride of Frankenstein window card for $5,000

Re: [MOPO] New Poster Filing and Viewing Cabinet

2006-09-20 Thread Dale Dilts

They have a 36x48 which will work for
people that buy quads as well. Problem I see is the cost. Even if they store 3
times the amount of a flat file, it costs 8 times what I paid for my 3 stack
flat file cabinets. How they can justify that kind of money for the amount of
materials used is beyond me.

Phillip,

I have.

We have one of these at work. It's even from the EASI FILE company.
It's full of 7.5-minute geologic quadangle maps
and mineral resource summaries. It works
great. However, the dimensions are wrong for posters. It only goes
across 24 inches -- don't think one sheets would fit.

However, a larger one...

Re: [MOPO] Best Poster Find!!

2006-09-20 Thread Evan Zweifel
I don't think what you paid for the piece has anything to do with "Best"!

I've been collecting Cary Grant posters for years, and every time I get to buy
one that I've never owned, I consider that a great find! Regardless of price or
rarity.

As for making my day -- offer me a nice U.S. 1 sheet, in reasonable condition
for just about any 1930s Grant title (or 1946 Notorious for that matter), for a
reasonable price, and you could participate in my "Best Poster Find" of this
year!

I have probably
overpaid for most of my posters, since they’ve been acquired in the
ebay-age.  I don’t have any of the great finds at an antique store
or garage sale.

My best find is
something that’s not too expensive and probably not too rare but I haven’t
seen another one.  I bought an advertising campaign piece for the
Incredible Shrinking Man.
It’s the size of a one sheet but was designed to be unfolded one fold at
a time.  There’s different advertising at each fold similar to what
you would find in a press book.  The full one sheet image is a black
background with the red line maze as seen in some of the advertising.  I
love it.

Mrs. Miniver, US OS, Style C

Many of you may
know that this is a very difficult poster to find.  It’s not highly
coveted, except by AA collectors, but it is damn hard to find.  The only
one I had ever come across was in the Gunnard Nelson auction.  Like an
idiot, I passed on it there (although I did get many great items).

I had been
trying to complete my collection of AA winning US OS’s for 10 years and
had been down to Wings, Cavalcade, Cimarron,
Grand Hotel and Mrs. Miniver forever.

I finally
stumbled on a new listing for the poster on ebay in 2001.  It had a
starting price of $50 and no bids.  I contacted the seller who said she owned
a junk shop in south NJ and had the poster hanging in her shop with a $50 price
tag for years.  She finally decided to try ebay.  I made a deal with
her to buy-it-now for $100.

Now, thankfully,
I’m down to only needing Wings, Cavalcade and Cimarron.

appreciate you coming in this late in the game when the mood on the list has so obviously shifted against what I was trying to do (not fight with Susan and ask her to behave in a civilized way).I mean, just for fun, humor me and take a close look at what Scott really said and did with his official "Friendly Reminder". I quote:"Personal attacks of any kind will not be tolerated. This includesname-calling, innuendo, insults or gossip.(calling someone a "hooked trout" or asking someone to "sheath their claws"fall into the personal attack category)"Please note that he deliberately *edited* Susan's original phrase, which was to call me "a FUCKING hooked trout." Now, Scott is a smart guy. This no accident. He consciously neutered her comment to make it sound far less offense than it really was. In addition, please note that out of all the text in my original message to Susan, he picked the single
"worst-sounding" phrase and quoted that -- but he edited that as well. Immediately after my suggestion to "sheath your claws" I wrote the word "Peace" in my original message. Scott deliberately left that word out of his official message to make my comment look worse than it was. That's deceptive manipulation of public opinion on a scale that Donnie Sullivan never even dreamed of!But even if grant this manipulation, why did nobody ask "Scott, how come calling someone a fucking hooked trout is the same thing as suggesting that someone sheath their claws? Isn't one a personal insult and the other a suggestion on how to behave in civilized company?"Do you see my problem here? Scott has just elevated himself to a level of moderator duplicity that puts him *above* Donnie Sullivan as far as I'm concerned. And he did it because he sensed that all the touchy-feely Susan fans would revolt if he booted her off
for violating the rules. He did it for the same reason Donnie Sullivan stabbed me in the back and booted me off Style B -- to keep his numbers up and pacify the vocal Susan Brigade. So let's not kid ourselves... she got away with it, um, scot free. Susan and the Style Bees are now in the conscious process of converting MOPO into their own image, and Scott is cooperating with it... encouraging it.I wish those who try stand against this trend good luck, but I've already committed hari-kari on MOPO over this. Consider me one toasty, immolated monk as far as MOPO is concerned. After what I've said the last couple days I'll never have any credibility on that list again.Obviously, I did make a terrible mistake. I kept silent when Susan first attacked me -- I should have defended myself the very first day, but I didn't think a flame war would be good for the list, so I didn't. So Susan "won" the moment Scott posted
his "Friendly Reminder" and blamed me as much as her for the "flame-a-thon" -- even though I had said nothing in reply to her 5 flame messages -- because the rest of the list bought his prouncement simply because he's the Moderator. So now I end up looking like the asshole who is trying to keep the debate going simply because I waited for him to enforce his rules -- and so I was forced to belatedly defend myself at the end of the sequence, when everyone just wants it to be over. But I had to refute her lies, PJ -- you and some others knew they were lies, but there are a lot of new people on MOPO who had no way of knowing she was lying. But seriously, Dude, it's too late for... save yourself! [MOPO] POSTER FINDS

2006-09-20 Thread OneSheet

Three quick stories the younger collectors might enjoy.

It's 1970 and I'm living in Cleveland, Ohio, and trying to find original Charlie Chaplin paper.  There were few movie memorabilia shops in 1970, so I write to them, and then try writing to the antique stores in the big cities.  After a number of weeks I received a letter back from a NYC antique shop which had unfolded half-sheets on Chaplin's GOLD RUSH (1925) and THE CIRCUS (1928).  However, the shop had two other rolled half-sheets, and since they didn't deal in posters, they would only sell all four posters as a group.  There was ARABIAN KNIGHTS (1931), and THE TRESPASSER (1929), with Gloria Swanson.  I had no interest at all in the two non-Chaplin posters, but I was determined to get THE GOLD RUSH and THE CIRCUS.  So I bit the bullet and paid the $120 for all four half-sheets.

Buster Keaton collectors know how difficult it is to find lobby cards from his silent shorts and features.  Again, in 1971, I wrote all the memorabilia stores and antique shops hoping to find some Keaton paper.  No response after no response, until Collector's Bookshop in Hollywood, sent me a letter, saying they "ONLY" had the following, and then described 12 Keaton cards, including TITLE cards to CONVICT 13, ONE WEEK, THE PALEFACE, and THE PLAYHOUSE.  The title cards were $12.50 each, and the scene cards were $10.00.  I bought them all.  I still have the original correspondence (as well as the cards and posters) regarding the purchase of the Keaton lobby cards, and the Chaplin half-sheets.

In recent years I made a surprising purchase from a well known dealer.  I purchased a scene card from HIS WEDDING NIGHT (1917), a Roscoe Arbuckle short, for $175, which I felt was a fair price for an Arbuckle card.  However, the dealer obviously didn't recognize a very clear image of Buster Keaton, front and center, in DRAG!  I've always felt a bit badly that I didn't tell the dealer that the "woman" depicted was Keaton.  But on the other hand, it's not my responsibility to educate dealers.  He was no novice.  He had decades of experience.  Plus I really wanted that card!

[MOPO] Best Universal Horror Classic poster

2006-09-20 Thread Steven Yafet

A great topic, Sue.

I love The Mummy one sheet; can't stop looking at the image so that
would definitely be one of my picks. My other choice is The Raven
insert. Not that I own it myself, but it's exquisite. If anyone wants
to sell me one on a very long term installment plan, I could make some
wall space available for it.

Not that it was in your question, but The Werewolf of London one sheet
is one of the most beautiful pieces of movie paper from a film that is
not on my top ten (or even my top 100) list.

That must hurt; thinking about what might have been with the Dracula
one sheet. I know what you mean, though, it used to be difficult for
me to come up with enough change to buy Famous Monsters. There were
two lobby cards that I could have had fifteen years ago that were $900
apiece. At the time, there was no way and now there's no way to get
them for that!

Re: [MOPO] Best poster find.....

2006-09-20 Thread P Molitor
Since it's really not fair to call purchases from 20 years ago "steals" ("brilliant moves" would be a better term imnsho) I'll take a couple from the last two years on e**y.     First is an original 1 sheet for "The Pace That Kills" (lurid nekkid ladies in a martini glass) that was woefully mis-described with absolutely no key words that would have showed up in *any* searches other than by title.  It was a mess and had to be restored but well worth it for the <$25 paid initially.  Sellerdude was a real character and was apparently raising funds "to buy a gun - don't ask..."  Needless to say I didn't!     Second was more recent, an original German "window card" for the 1934 Brigitte Helm UFA sci-fi film "Gold".  Paid a lot (for me) but was ready to go MUCH higher.  Snuck through the cracks as all the usual f*rs were apparently AWOL.  As close to an
original German "Metropolis" as I'm likely to get.     --Peter

[MOPO] Since I started all this Poster Find "Stuff"

2006-09-20 Thread Eric Melanson
OK..true story!!

My wife, at best, tolerates my poster hobby. It could be because she
has precious few wall spaces she can decorate that don't have posters
up. She is a collector of nothing, nada.

So to redeem myself, I had to make a run to the Salvation Army thrift
store a few years ago with bags of our outgrown clothes from the kids,
who were at that age where they went through clothes faster than water
since they grew like weeds. After feeling like a mule hauling bag after
bag to the donation box, I go in dutifully to get my receipt signed.
While waiting, I spy a box just in eyesight saying ..$2.00 each...and I
see rolled posters coming out. So I fish through this box of rolled and
folded posters, and I almost pee my pants. I walk away with 18 posters
for $36among them

Folded "On Golden Pond" pre-academy awards
Advanced "Raging Bull"
Rolled Chinatown and last but not least..

A rolled Dayglo Fantasia poster.$2 for each!!!

Re: [MOPO] Best Universal Horror Classic poster?

2006-09-20 Thread Phil Edwards Cinemarts
As THE MUMMY was the only one of the Universal horror classics not
banned from Australian TV in the 50s and 60s, it was the one that I saw
first - ahead of DRACULA, FRANKENSTEIN and assorted sons, daughters and
brides...

Having been long in the thrall of the musty history of ancient Egypt,
THE MUMMY made a special impact on and along with SON OF FRANKENSTEIN
(the first in the Frankenstein films I saw on the big screen in
1965... in a decaying picture palace (since restored) it has
remained my favourite. Maybe it's that influence from the past (although
I like the Universal sequels even if they lack the style and atmosphere
of the Karloff original) and I'm a big fan of Hammer's 1959 remake, but
the original MUMMY one sheet would certainly be the one to have for this
dinosaur.

Susan Heim wrote:
The Mummy lobby card was a great find. I had someone offer me the

at that time, he could have been asking for $35 million and it
wouldn't have been different. The guy explained to me that it would
probably be worth quite a bit more in the future, and I agreed, but
$3500 was almost 3 years rent to me in those days. He offered to go
down to $3000. I told him he could go down to $300 and I still
couldn't afford it. If I had only known, I would have borrowed from
everyone I knew to buy it. I always hoped that guy never sold it and
still has it to this day. You could see how much he loved the poster
and hated to have to sell it.

New question...Graphically, The Mummy and The Invisible Man
one sheet are my favorite of the Universal Horror Classic one sheets.
How about everyone else?

Hi,

I've been collecting and dealing in movie posters for close to

30 years. Sometimes it amazes not only how much angry diatribe has
taken over MoPo, but it seems as if certain members ,who act as if
they have all the right answers, are so often wrong. ie: a 40x60
has ALWAYS been a 40x60---never in my years of collecting have I
head it referred to as a "2 Sheet". There have been other
examples as well. Hey, I know some of you definitely aren't so
keen to any insight I might have, but, jeez, don't certain "high
level" individuals on this list (however they might be viewed as
such) have something better to do than spend hours bitching and
complaining about this person and that person. Lines upon lines

I just thought of another one but, it's not a poster. I bought a press kit for the Cinerama release of It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. It's made out of heavy cardbord and made to look like a briefcase. Not all the folders inside of it are filled with stuff though. I bought it before EBAY started up. I paid a lot for it - $225 or $325 - I forget. So, it's probably not worth that much but, it has a lot of cool stuff related to the movie.Roland LatailleCinerama web site:http://www.cinerama.topcities.com

Re: [MOPO] Best Universal Horror Classic poster?

2006-09-20 Thread Susan Heim

The Mummy lobby card was a great find. I had someone offer me the original
one sheet for Dracula back in 1982 or 1983 for $3500. Well, at that
time, he could have been asking for $35 million and it wouldn't have been
different. The guy explained to me that it would probably be worth quite a bit
more in the future, and I agreed, but $3500 was almost 3 years rent to me in
those days. He offered to go down to $3000. I told him he could go down to $300
and I still couldn't afford it. If I had only known, I would have borrowed from
everyone I knew to buy it. I always hoped that guy never sold it and still has
it to this day. You could see how much he loved the poster and hated to have to
sell it.

New question...Graphically, The Mummy and The Invisible Man one
sheet are my favorite of the Universal Horror Classic one sheets. How about
everyone else?

[MOPO] New Poster Filing and Viewing Cabinet

2006-09-20 Thread kainbach

This does appear to be the best storage and viewing system I have ever seen before. It is really amazing. See the link below. You can store two times 1250 one sheet posters. Does anyone else seen this system in action? It does appear much better than the flat filing system because easily view any of your one sheets immediately. It does appear the best system.

[MOPO] Enough.

2006-09-20 Thread Scott Burns

I am sending this message  to
MoPo deliberately. This is to be my final word on the subject--
Scott

JR:

I have had enough.

Please stop now. I am not in cahoots with
Susan or Style-B. I edited her comment because I don't like to see the word FUCK
on this list. While I don't personally find it offensive, I know a few others
do.

There is no conspiracy, despite your efforts
to find one.

I'm disappointed you can't understand
that if you'd just ignored Susan's post (on Frank Santos) none of this would
have happened. I realize now how hard it is (if not impossible) for you to
simply delete a post that upsets you. She did not attack you *personally* in
that post, although once you opened up the gates and brought up your
"history" she fired away. I wish she had exercised restraint. I asked her
to do so in the future and she said she would (this exchange was private between
Susan and I).

I can not for the life of me understand why
you can't just delete something that ticks you off. I do it all the
time.

This mess is just ridiculous and I'm sorry
to see that it has destroyed what e-relationship we had. You are reading WAY too
much in my "Friendly Reminder" post. Obviously my attempt at diplomacy failed.

This incident has become intolerable and I
find your lack of respect for me offensive. It takes a lot to push me over the
limit, but I have been pushed to that point. Now you've even dug up Donnie
Sullivan who hasn't been a member of MoPo for over 2 years and has nothing
whatsoever to do with this. This is beyond bizarre.

The only person to blame for your loss of
credibility is yourself.

Scott
MoPo List Owner (NOT Moderator--posts to
MoPo are NOT pre-approved).

My apologies to all of you for having to
suffer through this mess.

[MOPO] Best Poster Fiend? publicly asking JR to calm down

  PJ,

I'm writing you about this privately because I want to let you know I
appreciate you coming in this late in the game when the mood on the list has
so obviously shifted against what I was trying to do (not fight with Susan and
ask her to behave in a civilized way).

I mean, just for fun, humor me and take a close look at what
Scott really said and did with his official "Friendly Reminder". I
quote:

"Personal attacks of any kind will not be tolerated. This
includesname-calling, innuendo, insults or gossip.(calling someone
a "hooked trout" or asking someone to "sheath their claws"fall into the
  personal attack category)"

Please note that he deliberately *edited* Susan's original phrase, which
was to call me "a FUCKING hooked trout." Now, Scott is a smart guy. This no
accident.  He consciously neutered her comment to make it sound far
less offense than it really was. In addition, please note that out of all the
text in my original message to Susan, he picked the single "worst-sounding"
phrase and quoted that -- but he edited that as well. Immediately
after my suggestion to "sheath your claws" I wrote the word "Peace" in my
original message. Scott deliberately left that word out of his
official message to make my comment look worse than it was.

That's deceptive manipulation of public opinion on a scale that
Donnie Sullivan never even dreamed of!

But even if grant this manipulation, why did nobody ask "Scott, how
come calling someone a fucking hooked trout is the same thing as
suggesting that someone sheath their claws? Isn't one a personal insult and
the other a suggestion on how to behave in civilized company?"

Do you see my problem here? Scott has just elevated himself to a level of
moderator duplicity that puts him *above* Donnie Sullivan as far as I'm
  concerned.

And he did it because he sensed that all the touchy-feely Susan fans
would revolt if he booted her off for violating the rules. He did it for the
same reason Donnie Sullivan stabbed me in the back and booted me off Style B
-- to keep his numbers up and pacify the vocal Susan Brigade.

So let's not kid ourselves... she got away with it, um, scot free. Susan
and the Style Bees are now in the conscious process of converting MOPO into
their own image, and Scott is cooperating with it... encouraging
it.

I wish those who try stand against this trend good luck, but I've already
committed hari-kari on MOPO over this. Consider me one toasty, immolated monk
as far as MOPO is concerned. After what I've said the last couple days I'll
never have any credibility on that list again.

Obviously, I did make a terrible mistake. I kept silent when Susan
first attacked me -- I should have defended myself the very first day,
but I didn't think a flame war would be good for the list, so I

Re: [MOPO] Best poster find.....

2006-09-20 Thread Dave Rosen

My "best find" kinda fits in that category, Phil -
ie: something of rarity and interest but also with a particular personal
appeal.

Five years ago I bought two lobbies for the 1922
Canadian silent The Man From Glengarry. Why? Because the film was based on a
best-selling novel by a local author and because I live in Glengarry
County, where the film was set.

In the time since, I've discovered that the film is
lost and there appears to be - so far as I can tell though I'll keep
looking - no other paper extant.

The cards cost me $10 for the pair on eBay and I
have no idea of what their "real" monetary value might be. I just like
'em.

Sometimes the "best" poster find doesn't relate
to dollar value at all. Finding a bargain (i.e. a valuable poster at a cheap
price) has never compared - for me at least - finding something of rarity and
interest, or a piece that has some sort of particular personal appeal.
Sometimes the two go together. They don't always have to.

Jesus Christ!!! Will we ever get off this fucking subject?  No wonder people are leaving this board.

I am close to unsubscribing from this list because of the hundreds of personal, spiteful, back and forth petty emails that are being sent.  And this list has been up for how long?  I'm surprised it has lasted a full year with all the crap I've had to endure coming into my inbox.

JR, Susan, and anyone else begging to join in the circus - grow up and shut the fuck up!  I don't care who wants to get the last word in.  JR, if you're going to stop posting and read archives, then get the hell out of here and do it, STOP POSTING.  If only your death rattle were real...somehow I have a feeling you'll post yet again.

And yes, I had to resort to this level of verbiage because of the children on this board obviously have not responded to any kind of logical, reasonable approach.
Sick of it all,

PJ,

I'm writing you about this privately because I want to let you know I
appreciate you coming in this late in the game when the mood on the list has
so obviously shifted against what I was trying to do (not fight with Susan
and ask her to behave in a civilized way).

I mean, just for fun, humor me and take a close look at what Scott really
said and did with his official "Friendly Reminder". I quote:

"Personal attacks of any kind will not be tolerated. This includes
name-calling, innuendo, insults or gossip.

(calling someone a "hooked trout" or asking someone to "sheath their claws"
fall into the personal attack category)"

Please note that he deliberately *edited* Susan's original phrase, which was
to call me "a FUCKING hooked trout." Now, Scott is a smart guy. This no
accident. He consciously neutered her comment to make it sound far less
offense than it really was. In addition, please note that out of all the

their own image, and Scott is cooperating with it... encouraging it.

Pretty wise guy, that Moderator of ours. He wasn't going to allow Mo Po
to relive another "low point of Mo Po's existence" as he himself
tagged it a few years ago. Can anyone blame him? Back then I bet his
finger was "on the button" to end the MoPo forum once and for all. It was
  MoPo's Bay of Pigs.

Had Scott not stepped in when he did I'm sure there would of been dozens

STORM! STORM THE OLSENSTEIN CASTLE!! KILL THE SHE-BEAST!" with
dozens of equally passionate "Susan For President! JR SHOULD BE
NEUTERED! SLOWLY!" retorts from the other side. Back and forth. Back
and Forth. Until what? We all turned to butter, perhaps?

It would have been entertaining as hell, but got us, as a group, no
  where.

So. Susan is back on MoPo. Let's deal with it. Welcome her with open
arms. Hurricane Susan, whose sustained winds and storm surge could flatten
Miami. Prepare for it. Read the warning flags, stock up, and be prepared
to evacuate. Those are the steps you take. You don't leave the country,
  dude.

Susan is right at home at Style B and NS4GE, especially when she's with
the other "wimmin'" over there. Things can be pretty entertaining (and nasty),
for sure. Over there Susan is like watching DEADWOOD with six-pack and a
few rowdy friends. But when she starts dropping F Bombs on MoPo it
doesn't seem right. It's like watching DEADWOOD with your Mother and Dad in
the room. There are some things you just dont say with parents around. For
instance, "Hey C**ksu**er, Pass the F***ing
chips!"  would qualify as something one would not say with
a parents in the room, but something that could accidently slip out while
  watching DEADWOOD.

Susan can make Al Swearengen blush. If she wants to. She's our
Calamity Jane. That's a compliment, btw. A Point of Pride for her and
for us. And it appears she's trying hard to "be at home" and playing
nice-nice on MoPo, too. I like that.

I'm surprised you haven't recognized the BEST POSTER FIND thread for what
it is: a positive step forward. I'll say that again, this time in
  bold with italics, and underlined:
a positive step forward. As ON TOPIC as

between poster collectors. It's an attempt to move on, and QUICKLY, to better
things. And it's working. Who ever started it was/is genius.

2006-09-20 Thread Joseph Bonelli
Hi from Joe B in NOLA.     I think my best "find" was running across a lobby card from 1935 on Ebay one day about four years ago.  I paid $35.00 and, though I don't know the exact worth, I suspect it was a real bargain.     The picture is the 1935 Max Rheinhard'd "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and on the card are film-debuting Olivia de Havilland and already-scene-stealing Mickey Rooney.  It's a great card!!     A couple of years back de Havilland was present at the Oscars to lend some real star-power and class in introducing past winners.  Afterwards she and Rooney were reunited backstage.  Both told press it was the first time they had seen each other since the Shakespeare film over 60 years before.     And they say Hollywood is a "small world."     Joe B.

2006-09-20 Thread Susan Heim

Thank you Doug and I agree with you wholeheartedly.  At it's best,
this group is a collector's dream and I thank Scott for realizing it for us
all.  Even though I had known of many of the people on this group before
through their ad listings, etc., I have gotten to know many of them more
personally through the group. I occasionally find something I need on the group
also. I just recently bought a poster from Kirby. I owned the original of Roman
Holiday, but had always really liked the later rerelease and he had one.
In addition, it is always fun to hear other collector's stories of acquisitions
or what they continue to look for. I feel a kindred spirit with many. For years,
friends would say to me, "gee I didn't know what to get you for a gift" (this
was back when posters were cheap and all my friends knew I collected posters). I
would think "da", "have a look at my walls." They never took the poster thing
seriously. They do now!!  It is good to know you also and, even though, you
are near completion of your collection, it is always fun to hear or see what you
picked up lately. Take care and happy collecting to all.

Best poster find that comes right off the top of my head.  Mint "Shock Waves" for $15.  $12 Foxy Brown and $35 3 sheet to Varan.  There were a few others, but these stand out most.

Not saying this was my absolute "Best Find", but I was extremely happy to
have purchased an absolutely gorgeous, stone litho, 3SH from the silent 1926
movie, The Cohens and the Kellys, in NM condition.

Bought it in 2004 on our own MPB, from our own Abe, for $160 !! Not sure
what its worth but I'm sure not too many survived, and I was willing to pay
much more.

One of my best finds was a silent one sheet for EVANGELINE (1919), an
early film of Raoul Walsh, based on the Longfellow poem. This was in an
obscure auction up north somewhere about seven or eight years ago. It
wasn't that it was such an immediately appreciable bargain, but it was
fantastically beautiful, and will sell for a good profit someday. And
really deserves the moniker RARE, the most overworked word in
movieposterdom.

Easy. WRITTEN ON THE WIND, Universal-International, one sheet for
$10.

Okay, not in the best shape, I know, but come on! 10 bucks?

Howdy JR,

I agree with you ... life ain't fair, never has been,
doubtful it will ever be.

My grandpa had a saying for something like this ...

If you are ever looking for a helping hand ...
guaranteed to be by your side ... one that you can
count on 100% of the time ... look down at the end of
your wrist.

OK.

Ready?

Wipe it off.

Move on.

I think all the truly best finds have been
well documented and salt rubbed into every collectors open wound.

Any buy you get at half of market value
today is a find, whether it is a $5 poster of a $500,000 poster. Ebay has
opened the eyes of every joe six-pack, whether it be the hot wheels their mom
bought 25 years ago or the poster stapled to their dads garage wall.

[MOPO] Poster finds

2006-09-20 Thread Aaron Bates

In the late 80's at a poster show in
Chicago I found a beautiful copy of a cinerama roadshow Mad,Mad World 1sh
for $25.  In the mid-90's I found some 40x60's on all of the original Star
Wars films in a closet of a theater that was being sold.  A group of us
picked it over- with permission.  That day I also grabbed up inserts and
halfs for a number of late 60's-80's titles.    I also
bought a window card for Point Blank for $3 at an antique store.

Re: [MOPO] MOST OVERPRICED......................

2006-09-20 Thread Bob Brooks

Most overpriced?...  Hmmm.  I've been pretty lucky (or smart) and
haven't really taken a bath on any of the posters I've purchased (well, not yet
anyways, knock on wood).  I guess staying far away from the major auction
houses (and certain eBay auctions) has served me well...

However, I do remember thinking I was paying too much for this one, but I
really wanted it (typically, I stick with mostly one sheets):

http://www.damnthe.com/movie_posters/from_here_to_eternity_special_quad.jpg

But, then again, that was years ago and I can't remember seeing one on the
market since...  And, it wasn't that much more than a one sheet, so I
probably didn't come out too badly...

Cheers,Bob

[MOPO] Best Poster Fiend? publicly asking JR to calm down

2006-09-20 Thread Ron Wisberg
I was really enjoying the Best Poster Find messages, noticed Susan posted with something very positive, and then saw JR in my in box.      For a second my heart thought, wow, maybe the two really can live in peace. WRONG. JR hijacked one of the most positive threads I've seen in months and attempted to take it back to his own personal agenda.     SO WHAT THAT SCOTT DIDN'T HANDLE THINGS WITH THE JR SEAL OF APPROVAL!     Sorry JR, Susan Olsen seems very willing to let it go and talk about posters, can't you? I would rather talk about posters than I would whatever BADblood exists between you two. Let's drop who pounced first, let's forget public or private insults, let's get on with it. Are we keeping score as to who posted more negatives in 24-hours? Sorry, I stopped trying to keep score in life some time age.     Frankly, I really enjoy talking or engaging in
friendly debate with you, but it's time to let this go. Susan shouldn't be in some sort of "cooler" and you shouldn't be reading archives instead of e-mails. You've only hurt yourselves with these unneccesary "punishments."     I don't see a long lasting olive branch between the two of you. But I do see two people that know a lot about movies and posters and I want both to post and to make others feel welcome. Is that too much to wish for? Ron

Re: [MOPO] Best poster find.....

2006-09-20 Thread Shelly Whitworth-King
Now that's fantastic to hear.. a fellow MOPO member offering a Richardson
Studio piece to someone who will TRULY appreciate it. That's why I love
these groups. I have no doubt that the same would happen on NSFGE or
B-Style.

It's these acts / transactions that show just one of the positive aspects of
being in the group.

Personally, I think I'm still waiting for that BEST POSTER FIND but I'm ever
hopeful.

So true...mine would probably be (thanks to a great MOPO member) an aussie
daybill for The Way Of All Flesh, a gorgeous Richardson Studio piece. I
didn't even know it existed, until I was offered the poster, and now it's
one of my favourite posters.

Sometimes the "best" poster find doesn't relate to dollar value at all.
Finding a bargain (i.e. a valuable poster at a cheap price) has never
compared - for me at least - finding something of rarity and interest, or a
piece that has some sort of particular personal appeal. Sometimes the two
go together. They don't always have to.

The Wonderful World of The Brothers Grimm roadshow Cinerama version
poster. Sorry Kirby - it's not for sale! The only Cinerama version poster I
have seen for this movie. I guess all the collectors are holding on to
them.

[MOPO] Best Poster Fiend?

2006-09-20 Thread JR
I meant what I said about not posting to MOPO for the time being... but people
keep sending me private messages (of all kinds) and since, like everyone else,
I want this to be over, I really don't want to keep writing about it privately.
So, let me try to address the private questions and suggestions -- both those
which were well-intentioned and those which were less than friendly. I'll keep
it short this time:

Do any of you really think it was Susan Olson's childish little taunts that
really bothered me... even a little? No way. I've been flamed by real pros. She
doesn't even qualify as a talented amateur. That's why I simply ignored her.
What hurt was Scott not only failing to support his rules, or even publicly
reprimand Susan, but actually deciding to lump me in with her on equal terms in
his publicly-posted "friendly reminder" in such a way as to indicate that I was
as much responsible for Susan's freak-out as she was. Other people on this list
seemed to think this was somehow a "fair" thing to do... you know, it's good
form to publicly chastise "both sides" -- except, people, there was only ONE
side, since I had said *nothing* while Susan ranted on, message after message!

In effect, Scott publicly rebuked me for *not* engaging in a shouting match
with her!

Read that sentence again. Am I the only one who sees something wrong with that
picture?

Then there was the fact while she was ranting on and on that *none* of the
long-timers or Big Wheels on MOPO stepped up to the plate (either then or
during the next 3 days) to even offer her a mild rebuke -- even through she
kept sending post after post to the group, flooding MOPO with her rants while I
sat silently, not saying a word. I'm not saying anyone should publicly have
said "You're right, JR" -- but, aside from Andrea, there was not even one
single public comment along the lines of "Susan, this is not appropriate
behavior" or "We really don't appreciate this kind of language on MOPO, Susan"
Not one! Not even any expression of "Why are you flooding MOPO with these
messages... this isn't good for the list... why don't you just drop it?"

Interesting to note, however, that after I finally sent my ONE and ONLY
response on the whole mess that there were plenty of people who did say exactly
that to me -- both publicly and privately. Everyone has no trouble asking me
"Why don't you just let it drop, JR... talking about this isn't good for the
list..." But no one said anything like that to Susan when she was going on and
on in her attacks. What's up with that double standard?

This blatant hypocrisy on both Scott's part and MOPO as a group has disgusted
me and left me with a bad taste in my mouth that I have found hard to wash
away, no matter how many beers I drink or what angle I try to look at the
situation from. Perhaps I actually owe Susan a word of thanks for showing me
that I've been wasting my time here all these years? There's no doubt in my
mind that if she had been attacking Kirby the way she was me... or Freeman...
or Sue Heim... or even Bruce... with 5 consecutive, vicious, foul-mouthed and
abusive public messages in 24 hours... that there would have been plenty of
people publicly expressing their disapproval. But since she was attacking me,
no one but Andrea felt moved to say one damn thing about her behavior publicly.

So, let's me make it clear folks: Those were the things that tore it for me
with MOPO -- not Susan's pitiful little school yard insults. It was getting
hung out to dry by Scott and the rest of the "community" when all I did was
refuse to engage her in a public shouting match -- that is what soured me on
MOPO. So... for now I'm done with it and the whole bad joke called the "movie
poster community"... probably for good... only time will tell.

OK, folks... move along with your Fabulous Poster Find chat... Nothing on-topic
to see here
