I agree.  Even as a Republican, I DON'T want this here.  PLEASE don't feed the
troll!

Democrats and Obama supporters, as much as I know you want to, please don't
feel the need to reply.  MOPO doesn't need another flame war.

I think anyone who does this here should get one warning.  Do it again, and you
get kicked off.

  promising future,
would you be more likely or less likely to go to work for a

We have become such suckers for words that politicians can

Barack Obama seems determined to repeat every disastrous
  mistake of the 1930s,
at home and abroad. He has already repeated Herbert

raising taxes on high income earners, FDR’s policy of
  trying to

  policy of seeking
dialogues with hostile nations while downplaying the

It has long been said that uncertainty is the hardest thing

Perhaps the scariest aspect of our times is how many people

Barack Obama’s favorable reception during his tour in

since Neville Chamberlain returned from Munich in 1938,

[MOPO] Fw: Re: [MOPO] Is Ebay using the GOP Presidential race and Sarah Palin to promote itself?

2008-09-05 Thread Victor Medina
I don't think Ebay is trying all that hard, and let's be honest, they
don't have to.  Ebay, for better or worse, has worked itself in the pop
culture lexicon.  People don't say sell it or auction it anymore -
they say ebay it.

I don't believe Palin is trying to
mislead anyone.  She hasn't said she sold it on ebay - she has always
said she put it on ebay.  The press and the public I think took the
next step and assumed it sold.  Whether or not it sold really isn't the
point.  Even if you don't agree with her politics, any politician who
cuts government pork like she's clipping coupons has to be admired.
Besides, if she could sell the jet on MoviePosterBid, I think she
would, since there are no listing fees!

Message

This is so weird, I just have to ask the
question: Is Ebay so desperate that it is trying to promote itself through the
GOP Presidential race? No doubt everyone knows by now that former CEO Meg
Whitman was previously an advisor to Mitt Romney's failed presidential
campaign and is now one of John McCain's chief advisors being one of the
several
people he indicated he most admired and sought professional advice from. Well,
Sarah Palin has mentioned several times now in her stump speech in which she
lists all her accomplishments as Governor of Alaska that
he successfully auctioned off on Ebay the luxury Alaskan state jet
bought by the previous government for use by her office.  Turns out
that's not true. After going unsold for months, the jet was put in the
hands of Turbo North Aviation, an Anchorage aircraft broker, which put an
asking price of $2.45 million on the nearly $2.7 million jet. It was
ultimately sold privately to an Alaskan business man for $2.1 million,
$31,000 of which went to Turbo Aviation as a sales commission. Why is Sarah
Palin lying about an Ebay connection? It doesn't diminish whatever
accomplishment she achieved in selling an Alaskan state jet but it strangely
propels Ebay into the headlines and promotes it as an effective selling tool in
the public's eyes. I find this very puzzling. Does anybody else?

No, Phil - the clip was used to satirize a statement of Obama's making
it sound like he, Obama, was promising to stop the tides himself,
miraculously. You'd have to be following the campaign here to
understand. And it was a web ad, not a TV ad, and included other
in-jokes. A more recent web Ad - The One II - reprised the parting
of
the Red Sea clip - in this case leading to a shot of Obama body-surfing
during his recent Hawaii vacation - and added Yul Brynner as well.

Here's a link to the McCain ads on Youtube - The One and the One II -
which will go down in history, regardless of the outcome of the
election.

http://www.youtube.com/user/johnmccaindotcom?ob=4

There was a third web ad - Fan Club - whose original version
concluded
with Wayne and Garth doing their I'm not worthy genuflection.
Mike
Myers objected, and the clip was removed. Another ad somewhat in the
same vein - Celeb, at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHXYsw_ZDXg - got a
lot of notice for comparing Obama to Paris and Britney as an empty
celebrity. I'm not sure, however, that anyone who hasn't been
following
the election fairly closely, in particular the messianic overtones of
the Obama campaign, will get them, especially the two One ads.

Running on Empty was a reference to energy policy, in particular
the
Democrats' resistance to new drilling for oil.

Don't know about any infringement with the usage of film clips, but
McCain has continued to use music without permission from several
artists including Jackson Browne who is suing his campaign for $75,000

for using his song Runnin' On Empty in one of his t.v. ads

None of my searches are working either. All I get are ebay stores Buy It Now
listings. I hate eBay. I. Hate. eBay.

That's why I'm using Movie Poster Bid and eBid.net more and more. For non
poster auctions and sales, I really recommend eBid.net. Sure, there isn't as
much traffic, but it is a great site, free listings, and well organized. It
deserves to succeed and I am listing my non-poster auctions there hoping it
will catch on with more folks.

that recently eBay has been pushing the automatic re-list option (so that they

possible). I guess this is because folks aren't using the GTC (Good 'Til

else is having this problem, too.

Hard to tell on Day One if it is working, but didn't eBay run a listing fee
sale last week? Kind of makes you wonder if they were trying to head off any
drop by getting folks to start auctions early that might carry over, especially
if they relist. At least, that's what I would have done!

[MOPO] increasing MOPO membership

2008-02-18 Thread Victor Medina
If we are really looking into finding new members, I'd like to make an offer.
I am organizing a small collectibles show in Dallas in April, and we would love
to have some poster dealers. In addition, we have a meeting room that can be
used for a MOPO meeting and poster discussion. If someone would like to run
the meeting, you are welcome to do so (I am not really enough of an expert to
do it). I really miss the movie paper shows that used to be here - and while I
can't reproduce them, we can do something small. If there are any dealers in
the Dallas area who want to participate, tables are $15, so it won't cost you
much at all. While you may not sell your Breakfast at Tiffany's OS, you will
probably sell more modern, low dollar stuff. My show website is below, and
feel free to email me with questions. If nothing else, it may be a chance for
Dallas MOPO collectors to meet!

to share our most personal struggles with people around the world, and know
that although most of us do not know you or have never met you, we share your
pain and offer our prayers, condolences and best wishes.

I know it is hard to see how someone like Britney Spears - or sadly now, her
sister - can seem have children at will, yet eager parents seem to struggle in
the same situation. It is easy to ask why you. I believe that everything,
even painful situations, happens for a reason, and God never gives us more than
we can handle. What tests us today makes us stronger for tomorrow. I know
that given time, the sorrow you feel now will be replaced by joyful memories,
like having to build bicycles with training wheels on Christmas eve and
debating the authenticity of minty white inserts with your kids. :)

I pray the Lord will give you both comfort in this time and remind you of the
faith that endures and strengthens in times of grief.

too many PowerSellers make it to 10 years) and giving some great prizes to my
29,000+ customers.

That got me thinking. Who among us here on MoPo has had their eBay ID (the one
they bid with OR sell with) the longest? I will give whoever posts on this
thread with the oldest eBay ID (by one week from now) a free set of all 27 of
my in-print full-color movie poster books (a $529.96 retail value), AND I will
give at another set to one person who posts their anniversary date here (no
matter how new or old). I will draw that person at random, and if lots of
people reply to this thread with their anniversary dates, I will give SEVERAL
sets!

These sets of books are great for anyone who likes old movies, but even if you
don't, you can put them on eBay and sell them yourself, or you can give them
away as stocking stuffers, or whatever. Why am I doing this? Just tonight I
sold enough ($152,000+) to make 2007 my record selling year ever, and I thought
I would share my joy with some of you here!

Just put down your eBay ID and the date (month, day, and year) your ID was
first registered with eBay (no use trying to fib, since it is easily checked)
and post it to MoPo.

[MOPO] Superbad OR Supergood?

2007-08-29 Thread Victor Medina
I agree that too many movies today are pushing the envelope to extreme levels
and we as consumers are not being given advance warning as to how out there
some of the movies are. In the case of Hostel, you know what you're getting,
but in the case of Superbad the advertising does not hint as to how extereme it
gets. Too bad, as the film is funny, but young kids have no business seeing
and hearing some of what they put out. Worse yet, I see way too many kids at
R-rated films that irresponsible parents bring along.

I know many are afraid to say anything to avoid being labeled as a prude or
some sort of censorship supporter. I was very disappointed when I took my
young nephew to see Transformers, only to have a drawn out joke about
masterbation inserted in the middle. It was out of left field and totally
unnecessary, considering how many sub-10 year olds went to see this movie based
on a toy. Michael Bay should have been more responsible, but then again it is
Michael Bay.

Re: [MOPO] Off-Topic: Politics and Posters (EBAY's Meg Whitman and Republican Nominee Mitt Romney) NY Times Article of 1/9/2007

2007-01-10 Thread Victor Medina
I'm no fan of ebay nor would I support Romney's bid as a voter, but I admire
anyone who sticks by their personal beliefs to support a candidate that is not
the media darling of the moment (hello, Barack). Whitman is no fool,
supporting Romney wil bring criticism, yet she sticks to her guns. That takes
cojones.

Whitman has an impressive resume, from Princeton to Harvard to Disney to
ebay, I googled it and she really is a business role model for men and women
obviously. She's supported both Republicans and Democrats over the years, so
there must be something to Romney if she supports him.

I'm sure non-Republicans hate the idea of ebay fees going to Romney (although
the reality is 98% of your money goes to someone else like an ebay employee,
stickholder, or vendor), Republicans feel that way every time they go to a
movie made by a liberal Democrat. And it just isn't money. When I heard Benn
Affleck was marrying Jennifer Garner, I let out a Darth Vader NOOO!

Have a good day everyone and stay warm,

Romney's hi-tech fundraising campaign for the Republican candidacy for
President in 2008:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/09/us/politics/09romney.html

If you take a look, EBAY Chief Executive Meg Whitman was working the
phones for the former Governor and is quoted in the article. The
reason I was distressed by this fact is that as an EBAY buyer and
seller, I have paid a fair share of fees toward the bottom line of the
company over the last 10 years. Much of all fees incurred eventually
end up in the bank accounts of the company's highly-paid Executive
officers. Meg Whitman is a voracious supporter of Mitt Romney,
unarguably the Republican positioned to the far right on the political
spectrum. Make no mistake, he is a right wing, Mormon, religious,
extremist candidate, not a centrist or moderate. So, inadvertently, I
am finding myself in the position of supporting Governor Romney in his
run for the candidacy via my contributions to Ms. Whitman's salary.

I realize that Meg Whitman has a right as a citizen (and within Federal
donation guidelines) to support any candidate she choses. However, I
do question the judgment of the company and of the Executives on board
in allowing her to so openly and flagrantly support such a candidate.
It's not really the money, in this instance, but rather her influence
and persuasiveness. Meg Whitman is a very powerful person, undoubtedly
one of the most significant business leaders in the world.

I question her judgment in this matter. Anyone have any thoughts on
this or am I just spinning my wheels by bringing it up here? My sense
is that many members of the so-called EBAY community would never
consider supporting such a candidate, inadvertently or otherwise.

[MOPO] Ebay, Google, how about Yahoo auctions?

2005-10-26 Thread Victor Medina
I'm not surprised Google is making a try at auctions, but if Yahoo can't make a dent in ebay's momentum, who can?

I've bought and sold using Yahoo auctions and I love it, no fees, user friendly, my only concern is that it doesn't have as many users as ebay. You would think with no listing fees and auto relist sellers would be lining up, and some are, but not enough. I wonder if Google could do any better while they charge fees. They will have to do some innovative marketing and tie ins to make it work.

[MOPO] Dump ebay...use MOPOBID and epier.com instead

2005-04-08 Thread Victor Medina
I too am sick of ebay - and not just because of how they mess with a good customer like Bruce - and while it will take time for me to totally divorce myself from ebay, I do have new options.

Of course, MOPOBID should be everyone's destination for movie paper, but I also suggest www.epier.comfor non-movie paper items. It's basically an ebay clone, only listing is free. They also automatically relist if an item doesn't sell, and youcan post lots of pictures for FREE. It isn't perfect, it doesn't yet have the selection or traffic of ebay, but with time and support it will get there.

Just a suggestion,

Vic

Re: [MOPO] What Did We Do To Deserve This? LONG!!!

2004-11-21 Thread Victor Medina
To the long suffering Scott, and the rest of MOPO,

I think I am one of the majority of MOPO folks who aren't regular posters but yet we enjoy MOPO for what it is, even with the flare ups. I want to say you have my full support and don't lose one bit of sleep over this person. I doubt he's in the majority at Style B.

I think I, like most, don't find ourselves cursing at the computer over a MOPO post. THAT should tell you something about the kind of person he is. Sure, I've been tempted to respond to some things that have been said here, but I've learned it's better to step away from the computer and not take it so personal. MOPO is an escape for me, a diversion, for some it's part of their job I realize that, but if you can't hack it, leave, but at least be mature enough not to whine about it to someone else.

Scott, you've got a tough job being a shepherd to this flock. I for one want to say thanks. Have a good Thanksgiving,

Vic
