[MOPO] HELP

2005-02-08 Thread John Sears

Does anyone have any knowledge of these 2
posters:  Voodoo Village, and Ice Antics.  I can't find anything on
Voodoo Village, it appears to be 50's or early 60's, is narrated by Burgess
Meredith, and may be a documentary.
Ice Antics is a short film that came out in 1939,
would like to determine the value.

Any help, hints, suggestions
appreciated.

[MOPO] HELP--AGAIN!

2004-08-18 Thread Judith Weaver
If you've never had a problem with eBay or Paypal, please delete this now.  I have a MAJOR problem with Paypal.  No identity theft--oh, no, it's even worse than that.  They don't believe I'm ME, and I can't prove it to them!!  If anyone can help, I'll be eternally grateful.  Here's the story:
I could write a book--a horror story.  I don't blame you if you don't believe any of it.  If I read it in a book, I probably wouldn't believe it either and say "That could NEVER happen!"  But it is happening--to me.

I was gone for so long on an unexpected and extended business trip and owed for so many auctions that when I got back (night of Aug 12), I went to my office on Aug 13 (Friday the 13th!  Yikes!!!) and paid for a bunch of auctions via Paypal--60+ items.  Then on Monday, Aug 16, I paid for a bunch more.  I was trying to do it in a hurry because people (like Jim Dietz) had been kindly and patiently waiting for so long and I wanted to get their money to them ASAP. Then on Tues, I got to work and found an email from Paypal that they had put a Hold on my account and cancelled all the payments I had made because of the "unusual activity" in my a!
ccount  (It's not unusual for me to pay my bills, but try telling that to Paypal!) In addition, their emails to all the sellers said that payment for the auction may have been made with "fraudulent funds"(!)  and they were canceling the payments!!!  I have gotten emails from people calling me thief, crook, deadbeat, fraud, and worse things.  Unfortunately, everybody is not nice like Jim who just asked what's going on.

I have been in touch with Paypal via email for 2 days now and keep sending them emails asking what they want from me, what do I have to do, etc. They have a system whereby you send in an email and they will call you on the phone to prove you are you.  But they wouldn't call me because I am long distance (international)!  Instead, they have sent me a letter with some kind of code in it and when I receive it, I must email that code back to Paypal. This proves I'm me.  How it proves I am the one who actually made all those auction payments, I don't know.  But this could take 7-10 days to accomplish and have!
this matter cleared and my Paypal account taken off Hold.  One email even said it could take up to 30 days! I called them long distance from Jerusalem and spent an hour trying to convince some poor guy who is just a clerk, I guess, that I am me.  He was pleasant and sympathetic, but said it will take several days AT THE VERY LEAST for them to sort it out.  He put all the info in the computer under my account hoping it would help.  Meantime, they didn't just put a Hold on the payments--they cancelled them completely.  So if and when they DO let me have my $1,000+ back, it willbe up to me to determine which sellers did and which did not receive their money. Can you imagine the recordkeeping

This is a case where I am actually the one using the account and there is NO fraud involved whatsoever. But can you imagine how difficult it is to prove you are you when you are a long distance away from the US?  It's almost impossible  I don't know what to do until I can get Paypal to lift the Hold on my account.  I have sent emails to sellers telling them I would like to complete the transaction.  I want the items!!  But I fully understand if they are fed up and want to cancel the transaction, re-list the item, giv!
e me bad feedback, send me nasty letters, etc.  (An interesting side point is that all of that money I sent in payments that were then cancelled is not being returned to my bank account.  Oh, no--It is sitting in my Paypal account. It's well over a thousand dollars.  If they did this same thing with 100,000 people with accounts out of the millions of accounts they have, that would be over $1,000,000 dollars sitting in their Paypal accounts instead of being with the buyer or seller.  Interesting.)

I have spent two full workdays working on this problem.  I just don't know what else to do and am ready to give up.  Please advise if you have any ideas that would help.  I'll agree to almost anything including that I fling myself off the highest building.  (If I didn't know better, I'd think this was some kind of bizarre Alfred Hitchcock modern-day movie plot!)  Thanks for any advice.  Best regards, Judith Weaver

Re: [MOPO] help

2009-01-21 Thread Patrick Michael Tupy

Surely, Sue, he meant Beverly Hills and Arkansas.

What I find most interesting is that among his complaints about
'bullshit' and spam,
he ends his insult including plea for "Help" by adding his own B.S.
spam in his post script:

"ps. If you would like to join a free membership to
Posterfix and get an exclusive video each month on care and
collecting posters, go to www.posterfix.com and sign up. Its free!"

Yeah, I asked for that. And after watching him post links to his
self-agrandizing youtube vids, aren't his complaints a bit like the

horsesh*t calling the bullsh*t crap?

Buh-bye,

Patrick

Now Richard, I'd have to say that he's more of a 'practicing' AH

believe he still has some potential to 'grow' into an even bigger

he becomes 'complete.'

He did, and stayed long enough to successfully establish he's a

So, OK! 2009 IS going to be a great year! We are off to a fabulous

I put that poster in the closet until next Xmas; it needs more love

I'll try again. I'm just thrilled I got it back at all and was quite

Yes, none of it makes any sense to me.
He's a poster restorer that takes time and trouble to alienate a large
network of potential customers.
Because really film posters are beneath him, and he'd rather be
restoring Alphonse Mucha posters etc
But then that also must be beneath him, because actually he's a fine
artist who can demand $5k-30k per painting.
Surely, given the amount of complex rewiring he needs and the high
cost of psychiatry, he'd be spending all his valuable time knocking
out his twee, chocolate box daubs.
Beginning to have terrible foreboding regarding his potential for
future happiness.

PS: If Bruce is spam, then at least it's honest to goodness crazy,

finding anyone capable of linen-backing a 6 sheet and framing it for me.

[MOPO] Help needed please.

2005-03-02 Thread dianademail-lastmo
Hi all.
A family member who earns his living on ebay has been shut down by ebay because, when he moved recently, he did not update his address and phone number...a process which innocently got lost in the shuffle of the relocation (not many miles from the previous home). In any event, he was surprised to wake up and find all auctions cancelled, and his account terminated.

Any idea how this happened? We are assuming that someone must have applied for contact information and got the outdated phone number. Well, in any event, he needs to get up and running again and  is in desperate need of the super-secret ebay telephone number (the one where someone actually answers the phone and helps you!!) .

This ebay phone number has been posted on this site before. Will you please offer it again?

Thanks - Diana and Morrie

p.s. if you happen to have surmised who this seller is, and were bidding on the auctions which were shut down, dont give up. He will be up and running again as soon as this mess is straightened out.

Hi Judith,

Unfortunately the level of credit card fraud on the
internet has become so high and the fraudsters have become so skilled at
stealing total and perfect identities that most credit card companies and
internet sites now rely heavily on spending patterns to differentiate between
genuine and fraudulent transactions.

This is a powerful technique, but as you have
discovered it does have a weakness, genuine people don't always act predictably
and a spending pattern is not gospel !!

Most good credit card companies solve this problem
by telephoning the card holder to clarify the situation.

Problem here is that Paypal is being a cheapskate
and does not want to make an international call  ( eventhough for most
corporates the call charges are the same as national calls !)

My only suggestion would be to pay your sellers
directly with your credit card instead of going through Paypal. If the sellers
don't take credit cards, the other strategy is to reduce your reliance on Paypal
by signing up with a number of other online payment systems.

  If you've never had a
problem with eBay or Paypal, please delete this now.  I have a MAJOR

that.  They don't believe I'm ME, and I can't prove
it to them!!  If anyone can help, I'll be eternally grateful.
  Here's the story:
  I could write a book--a
horror story.  I don't blame you
if you don't believe any of it.
If I read it in a book, I probably wouldn't believe it either and say
"That could NEVER happen!"  But it
  is happening--to me.

I was gone for so long on an
unexpected and extended business trip and owed for so many auctions that
when I got back (night of Aug 12), I went to my office on Aug 13 (Friday the
13th!  Yikes!!!) and paid for a
bunch of auctions via Paypal--60+ items.
Then on Monday, Aug 16, I paid for a bunch more.  I was trying to do it in a hurry
because people (like Jim Dietz) had been kindly and patiently waiting for
so long and I wanted to get their money to them ASAP. Then on Tues, I got to
work and found an email from Paypal that they had put a Hold on my account and
cancelled all the payments I had made because of the "unusual activity" in my

and they were canceling the payments!!!  I have gotten emails from people
calling me thief, crook, deadbeat, fraud, and worse things.  Unfortunately, everybody is not nice

I have been in touch with
Paypal via email for 2 days now and keep sending them emails asking what they
want from me, what do I have to do, etc. They have a system whereby you send
in an email and they will call you on the phone to prove you are you.  But they wouldn't call me because I am

Since paypal is owned by Ebay, perhaps one of the Ebay chat rooms or community message boards might be a good place to vent and ask for advice. Occasionally someone from ebay reads the postings and comments and/or provides a solution. This sounds like a real nightmare; I am so sorry this has happened to you. Good Luck.

Re: [MOPO] Help, please.....

2004-08-30 Thread J R

Judith,

I'm afraid that as far as I can tell, there is no comparable
alternative to PayPal, which is to say, one that is essentially "free" for the
person making the payment to use. Other services such as BidPay by Western Union
are basically just a way of sending a money-order via your computer and paying
for it with your credit card -- and they charge the person who is sending the
money (and it's pretty steep, $5.00 per transaction and higher).

See, the problem is that to do what PayPal does, you have to
essentially set yourself up as an internet bank -- so you can accept credit
cards and process payment transfers back-and-forth. It's very costly to start up
such a system now -- and you would be competing head to head with PayPal, which
means you would almost certainly fail. Particularly now that PayPal is part of
eBay. This is like owning the car dealership and the only bank in town for eBay
-- they've got both the sales and the financing market cornered. The chances of
anyone being able to break the monopoly at this point are very slim
indeed.

It's possible that one of the big international banks like American Express
or Citibank could decide to go into the electronic payment business as an
expansion of their existing services. A company like that with a huge existing
customer base would be about the only ones who could compete with PayPal and
bring the weight of their own high-end networks to bear on the situation. So
far, none of them have shown any interest in doing so.

Besides, any operation that allowed you to use your credit card
to fund those electronic payments would have to have the same
"security" procedure in place that you ran into on PayPal. The credit card
companies require it. They insist on "pattern detection" by their card
processors now. So any other service would have reached the same conclusion --
that when you suddenly paid 50 or 60 people in the same 24-hour period that such
activity was a violation of your "normal transaction pattern" and put a hold of
the payments. Of course, they might do a better job about contacting you and
quickly verifying that the payments were authorized. And then they might do
done a better job of contacting the sellers whose payments had been halted and
re-instate them with an explanation that you had done nothing wrong -- or maybe
not. Genuine customer service and support has become a thing of the past -- even
at companies which were once justifiably famous for their prompt, professional
and personal service like American Express used to be.

I'm afraid this is the cyberspace world we're stuck with now. Another good
reason to only do things on the computer that you can't do in person in real
life. I pity those who do *everything* via the computer now, just because they
have been deluded into believing it is "more convenient".

Is there an alternative to Paypal?  I'm not even a seller
so I don't have topay their fees (which I understand are high).  But
as a buyer, I am fed up.Because I made so many payments in one day, they
considered this "unusualactivity" and cancelled all the payments.
I'm all for security but not theway they do it.  Paypal then
proceeded to send an email to all sellersexplaining why they cancelled the
payment.  The explanation?  The paymentswere made with what were
ilkely "fraudulent funds".  No other explanation. One woman emailed me
that she wouldn't sell to me again as she didn't wantto be involved with
money-laundering rings.  Why couldn't they say simplythere was a
problem with the payer's account and therefore they werecancelling the
payments?  Oh, no, too simple, and not enough of
atrouble-making/insulting statement.  Then they kept roughly $1,400
of mymoney in my Paypal account (couldn't be returned to my bank account
fromwhence it came, according to them) and put a Hold on my account for 2
weeksbefore I could use any of it.  As a result, I have 4-5 negative
feedbackswhich I do not deserve.  I asked eBay to remove them since
Paypal was thecause, but you wouldn't like to lay some real money on
whether they will orwon't, would you?  So I'm looking for an
alternative.  Admittedly it's quiteconvenient to pay online.
But is there another company like them?  Thanksso much!  Best to

[MOPO] Help identifying a poster

2022-09-16 Thread Colin Hunter
My fellow MOPO-listas,

I recently acquired a real mixed bag of movie posters at a local estate
auction. There are some nice pieces such as a rolled R82 Raiders of the Lost
Ark 1-sheet and a linen-backed R48 Saboteur 1-sheet, but there are also some
virtually worthless examples such as a Brand of Fear (1949) 1S and a 6 Black
Horses (1962) 1S. There’s a Pulp Fiction 1S which has tragically been stored
extremely badly and I suspect nobody would want in its now sorry state.

While I decide what to do with them, I’d like to figure out if a poster which
has been stored rolled in a cardboard tube and got wet at some point is worth
rescuing. The water damage has caused all the paper at one end to fuse
together, but before I discard it I’d like to know what it is in the unlikely
event it’s worth the expense of a restorer's time. All I can see from the
unstuck paper portion are the words “For those who have never see” on one line
and “and those who have never forgo” on the next line. The letters are in
black, and the background appears to be a monochrome image but the visible area
I makes it too small to identify. I’ve put up a photo at
if anyone wants to take a look.

So, anybody know what this is?

Thanks.

2010-02-09 Thread Kevin Conway
In an ideal world, that would be the ideal scenario. But, let's face it, the
collectibles business is all about finding hidden treasures. And, most of the
time the most desirable "goods" are in the hands of less known sellers who were
the recipients of the "old lady's attic" or were at the right place and the
right time to discover a BOX of UNUSED Help Posters. Hence, all too often the
luxury of our favorite or well known dealer is not in the equation.

Interesting logic, Channing. I just wonder, how do the 'qualified
dealers' get hold of any new material? Not sure if I'm 'qualified',
but I sure am a dealer and I'm buying stuff all the time.

Now I can't travel the world and personally pick up any poster I buy

[MOPO] Help Mopoers, Need Advice

2008-05-24 Thread Patrick Michael Tupy
I have about 10 posters on display at a home I own with my family
which we rent out periodically. Is anyone aware of a good way to
secure them to the wall to inhibit
the theft of the posters? The renters leave a deposit so that is
deterrent, but I'd like to take some precautions if possible as my
brothers and sisters are concerned
that something could happen to them. I could just remove them,
however, several renters have actually mentioned that the posters
were the deciding factor in
choosing our beach house over others. They are mostly 'beachy' or
tropical in nature so I'd rather leave them there if possible.

Also, I've heard that specific insurance for artwork has gone up
recently. Does anyone know of the best way to insure posters?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much,

Patrick

[MOPO] MOPO HELP Disney OT

I could use a little help.

We recently purchased a 1938 yearbook from Palmyra, New Jersey. In it are
characters (drawings) from Snow White and on the first page the Statement
" Use of the Walt Disney Characters by special permission of Walt Disney
Productions LTD all right reserved. Is this something that Disney did that
early? Did he charge the schools for the use or did he put it out there to
publicize his films?

Thanks in advance for any help.

  Help needed please.
  Hi all.
A family member who earns his living on ebay has been shut down by ebay
because, when he moved recently, he did not update his address and phone
number...a process which innocently got lost in the shuffle of the relocation
(not many miles from the previous home). In any event, he was surprised to
wake up and find all auctions cancelled, and his account terminated.

Any idea how this happened? We are assuming that someone must have
applied for contact information and got the outdated phone number. Well, in
any event, he needs to get up and running again and  is in desperate need
of the super-secret ebay telephone number (the one where someone actually
answers the phone and helps you!!) .

This ebay phone number has been posted on this site before. Will you
  please offer it again?

  Thanks - Diana and Morrie

p.s. if you happen to have surmised who this seller is, and were bidding
on the auctions which were shut down, dont give up. He will be up and running
again as soon as this mess is straightened out.

Diana and Morrie,

Wow. eBay is completely unable to shut down the hundreds of obviously fake
sellers fronting clearly bogus auctions blatantly designed to rip people off --
but they are Johnny-on-the-spot and have no problem shutting down a legitimate
seller who just doesn't happen to update the contact information as quickly as
they would have liked. Unbelievable how well that organization runs itself. I'm
sure you have all of our sympathies and best wishes for a speedy recovery
from this latest attack of eBay random-itis.

[MOPO] Help -- I'm a rock!

2005-07-16 Thread MoPo Bid
Y'all,

Apparently Hurricane Dennis did some subtle damage to my personal DSL service
and none of my numerous messages to MOPO for the *past week* made it through to
the list -- but since I didn't receive any "bounce notices" I only just now
realized it when I checked the archives. So, I am sending this message using
the MoviePosterBid.com sever tucked away in its bunker in central Kansas to see
if I can get a message to MOPO this way.

One of the messages that didn't get to you last week was the announcement that
we are staging a big "Sci-Fi, Monsters & Horror Auction" theme event in the
first week of August -- and that for the first time ever at MPB we have a
PREVIEW CATALOG that you can look at right now to get a peek at some of the
fine theme-related posters which will be up for auction in just about two weeks.

To view the PREVIEW CATALOG, go to http://www.MoviePosterBid.com and click on
the banner with Robbie the Robot that appears at the top of the Home Page.
Lot's of good stuff!

Of course, anyone with posters to sell on this theme can join in -- if you
don't know how, just email JR at [EMAIL PROTECTED] for details.

Man, I hope this message gets through to you folks. I'm beginning to feel like
an AOL user (sorry, Henry... :)

[MOPO] Help: Glossy lobby cards?

2006-03-22 Thread Dave Rosen

Hi, all:

I have a question related to some lobbies I just
picked up.

I acquired three cards from Underwater, the
RKO/Howard Hughes/Jane Russell scuba movie. Oddly (to me anyway), these cards
are printed on glossy paper, as opposed to the matte cardstock I'm accustomed
to. Since these are the first cards I've handled for this film, I was wondering
whether this was how they were originally issued.

Or were they originally issued as normal and then
re-issued as glossies? Or are these from a later re-release? Or what? I don't
think they're repros as they show some age and wear. But they are un-numbered
and there is no NSS info on them. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

[MOPO] Help with new seller!

2009-03-16 Thread Carlos Mantica
Dear Sirs

I consider myself a new mopo seller since I haven’t done it in a long time
(At least ten years!).

I live in Nicaragua and used to collect, buy and sell movie posters.

I started selling through my friend Mahyab Moayeri and found, here in
Nicaragua, a poor, old guy, almost blind, who used to be a projectionist
since the 50’s, who sold me his poster collection. He had, at a wooden
shack that he considered his home, a treasure trove of movie posters.
Perhaps more than five hundred classics including Breakfast at Tiffanys,
Psycho, and many many others.

I sold the crème of the crop trough Mahtab a few years back, but there were
so many that I never got a chance to see them all. I just KNOW that I still
have quite a few good ones. They are still in storage. At least I know that
most are from the 50’s and 60’s.

The problem is that MOST of the very valuable ones are in very bad
condition, mostly separated at the seams and panels and ragged at the edges
because they were stored at a wooden storage place with dirt floor. Also, he
wrote in the back of a lot os his posters of his. Of course, I also have
other posters which I got from the distributors’ warehouses as well, but no
real vintage classics there.

I want to find somebody interested in helping me sell these posters and
perhaps restore some of them (Or at least ONLY linenback them so they don’t
deteriorate further).

One of these days I decided to take some time and start sorting out the good
titles. I posted some in the email below to mopo that you might have seen.

Please, please help me appraise the real valuable pieces among these and if
anybody wants to be my partner, maybe we could get some cash out of my
collection. I also have lots of Mexican lobby cards and posters, Italian,
Chinese kung fu movies (In Chinese), and even some plastic posters from the
60’s and 70’s Also a few presskits.

Let me know if anyone is interested or willing to help. I will keep posting
my pieces little by little, unless someone has a website where I could list
them.

Respectfully

My fellow MOPO-listas,

1-sheet, but there are also some virtually worthless examples such as
a Brand of Fear (1949) 1S and a 6 Black Horses (1962) 1S. There’s a
Pulp Fiction 1S which has tragically been stored extremely badly and I
suspect nobody would want in its now sorry state.

While I decide what to do with them, I’d like to figure out if a
poster which has been stored rolled in a cardboard tube and got wet at
some point is worth rescuing. The water damage has caused all the
paper at one end to fuse together, but before I discard it I’d like to
know what it is in the unlikely event it’s worth the expense of a
restorer's time. All I can see from the unstuck paper portion are the
words “For those who have never see” on one line and “and those who
have never forgo” on the next line. The letters are in black, and the
background appears to be a monochrome image but the visible area I
makes it too small to identify. I’ve put up a photo at
 if anyone wants to
take a look.

So, anybody know what this is?

Thanks.

Thanks for the identification. A R80 Midnight Cowboy is definitely not worth
the expense of restoration to unfuse the stuck paper. Fortunately, most of the
other posters in the lot are in much better shape.

I knew somebody on MOPO would have the answer, and so quickly, too.

Thanks again

Re: [MOPO] Help identifying a poster

2022-09-17 Thread Colin Hunter
Thanks for the useful information on how to remove the water damage, but Fred's
identification of the poster as an R80 Midnight Cowboy means it's the end of
the road for this 1S. The entire right side to around 4” is fused due to bad
storage and a restorer’s charge to unstick it is far more than the poster is
worth.

Still, I’ll remember your ironing trick for the future so at least I’ve learned
something from the experience!

  Patrick

Maybe Vera Miles and Peter van Eyck. If so the film is Tarzan's Hidden

Re: [MOPO] Help wanted identifying still

2014-03-01 Thread JOHN REID Vintage Movie Memorabilia
Hi Rich and Phil
Thanks for the quick reply. I agree that it must be Robert Beatty. The thing
that confused me is that there seems to be stills with two different Production
Codes for Lost Safari. One lot has TL12 and the other set has E55-12.

Has anyone ever come across stills from the same movie with different
production codes?

Regards
John

Re: [MOPO] Help wanted identifying still

Thanks very much. I was in fact, thinking that the code on the still was
referencing the first of Gordon Scott's Tarzan films. Much better eyes than
mine out there.
