2012-06-06 Thread Kendra Carroll
Does anyone know a state that has done an exceptional job at unpacking the
ELA standards for elementary school? Thanks for sharing!

Re: [MOSAIC] conflicting assessments

2012-03-15 Thread Kendra Carroll
Beth, how does the child perform when asked to make words with the tiles
during that part of the Fundations lesson? Could it be that she is
having trouble relating the visual of the letter to the sound? When she
is reading a text, does she rely more on picture clues and making the
text makes sense OR does she sound out most of her words? I have seen
students that cannot decode/encode in isolation but can read text. It
is due to the fact that they are using many strategies when reading a
text.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a source of short leveled fiction pieces to
use for guided reading?  Currently our GR room only has novels in it.  I teach
6th grade and am looking for levels T-Z.

Re: [MOSAIC] fountas & Pinnell BAS

2012-01-25 Thread Kendra Carroll
"We currently have 2-3 per grade (with 5-6 teachers). We are discovering
that

isn't enough. We really need one per teacher, since we do our running

records at pretty much the same time (beginning/middle/end of year, and
as

needed for some kids)." (Melissa)

I agree with Melissa. We have at one school 2 teachers sharing a kit
which is more manageable but at another school 4 teachers share, and it
is very hard to coordinate.

If teachers are comfortable with running records, I think the transition
will not be hard for them but training would still be a must. The level
of questioning offered in the retell aligns with the Common Core
Standards and are great thinking questions that allow the teacher to
probe the student's thinking.

Good luck on your endeavor!

Kendra

Re: [MOSAIC] Question...formative and summative in second grade?

2011-12-25 Thread Kendra Carroll
Our grading system is based on proficiency so we use information from formative
assessments to give grades; however, there is a summative at the end of the
year and end of quarter assessments. Of course, we hope that this information
aligns but realize that students have bad days just like we do. Therefore, they
are not penalized if they do.

Re: [MOSAIC] need evaluative tool for kindergartners and firstgraders

2010-04-13 Thread Kendra Carroll
Does anyone know of a good progress monitor probe for comprehension for grades
3-6? We tried and dismissed the AIMS MAZE -- it may be predictive, but doesn't
match any instruction. We need something that can be given every couple of
weeks, that will give a general comp score. What do others do for RTI data
for comp?

You may want to look at the RTI book put out by Gretchen Owocki. It is from
Heinemann. Also, have you considered the Fountas and Pinnell benchmark kits?

Re: [MOSAIC] Pacing Guide for Strategies

2010-03-24 Thread Kendra Carroll
Sue, I believe that with all students you first start a study about
metacognition then move into the other strategies. Debbie Miller
suggests in her book teaching each strategy for about 6 weeks. For
your k's, there are a couple of great books for them: Starting with
Comprehension and The Literate Kindergarten. Our system does a
strategy a month. Good luck with your endeavor.

[MOSAIC] Strategies Across Grade Levels

2009-12-14 Thread Kendra Carroll
Good Morning! As a teacher coach, I have been questioning how strategy
lesson should look different across K-5. In our system, we take a
strategy a month to focus on. The teachers that I work with and I have
started a discussion about how we should be doing different lessons at
each grade level. Have any of you addressed this in your schools and
what did it look like? Are there any resources out there for us to use?
Thanks so much:-)

Re: [MOSAIC] departmentalization

2009-02-12 Thread Kendra Carroll

I've been reading/skimming many of the posts this morning. I feel strongly
about doing what is best for kids and consider myself a whole langauge teacher.
However, I also realize that what works for one does not always work for all,
departmentalization included. Last year we did it successfully in second grade.
We were actually able to group our children better heterogeneously and meet
their needs accordingly. Students were in three groups and moved in the same
groups. One teacher taught math, one word skills and two teachers took a group
and did teacher directed and small fexible group instruction. Our students
loved it and we found that their skills increased.

I can see how this would not work for all groups. Like others have said, you
would need to look at your children, your teachers and your plan- Good Luck:)

Thanks so much to all who said I needed this book. I just got my copy

Hi Kendra - Boy, do I feel like an idiot now! I hope you didn't spend much

Re: [MOSAIC] kindergarten

2008-07-04 Thread Kendra Carroll

Lori, thank you for breaking your no work until July rule. I am going to be
teaching K for the first time next year and have been wanting to post but
didn't know what to say. Your post and all those who have responded are giving
me a direction in which to start my summer reading. I have a few questions.

1. You said that you "have been SLOWLY trying to break out of the "letter of
the week" system that my team uses". Our teachers have always used this model
but I didn't want to. We have the fundations program by Wilson. I have not
looked at it that much for K. My thinking was to use a reading/writing workshop
model and incorporate this into it. How have you tried to not do a letter a
week?

2. I too taught first grade for 3 years and 2nd grade last year. I have never
taught K. What advice would you and others give me?

3. I have veteran teachers in my county that think K can't learn reading
comprehension strategies. Do you start these at the beginning like you did in
1st after introducing certain fundamentals of reading workshop. I know that
with K you have to build knowledge of print concepts and books. I have used
Debbie Miller's book in the past to guide my reading comprehension instruction.
I am also currently reading To Understand.

Thanks for helping me,
Kendra

Re: [MOSAIC] OT First or second grade?

2008-04-30 Thread Kendra Carroll
I taught first for 3 years and then moved to second. Here's my take on it.
First grade is teaching children the logistics of reading. They are like
sponges but need lots of nurturing and support. In second grade, they are more
independent. They need reinforcement in comprehension since decoding skills are
strengthened in first. Personally, I miss my babies. I miss the music I did
with my first graders and supporting beginning readers. So I would have to say
that it depends on what you like. Search your heart and see what it is you
like in teaching. Second grade may be your perfect fit. For me, I can wait to
get back to first or K.

Good Luck,

I am one of the lucky ones. I work in a school where every teacher (K-5)
has an interactive whiteboard, each grade level has their own cart of
laptops (except for fourth and fifth graders who each have their own
personal laptop that they keep with them all day), and a fully equipped
computer lab. Each classroom has at least two desktop computers and every
teacher has their own personal laptop. Each grade level has their own
digital camera and camcorder. Every teacher has an iPod. Every teacher
K-3 has a palm pilot. We have a full time technology facilitator that is
there for technical issues and also plans projects with each grade level
and does inclusion to teach computer skills. We have weekly technology
staff development. We are required to use Edutest and a online
prescriptive learning program to assess and tutor the kids. I feel in
fourth and fifth grade (I teach fourth), technology has been an essential
tool for planning and implementing instruction the past few years. I'm
not sure if there is any correlation but the school's test scores have
continued to rise each year we have been adding new technology (one more
year and we're out of school improvement!). However, one thing is for
sure-the students have been more engaged and excited about learning now
than were before we brought the technology in and each year their computer
and problem solving skills become greater. I am still amazed at the
student who refuses to read a book or do any "traditional" school work but
whose eyes light up and produces the most spectacular multimedia
presentation when put in front of a computer! I would love to hear other
people's thoughts on this!

Renee,
This is one of the main reasons I don't "panic" when some of my student score
poorly on exams. I'm an early childhood educator first (I thought pre-k for 20
years before becoming a 2nd grade teacher) and ALL my training for 4-5 year
olds helped me understand the 7-8 year old. They are in the same developmental
stage!! I teach very differently than many of my colleagues. However, I must
say that the age "range" for this pre-operational period (Piaget) is 2-8 and so
I see many light bulbs going off all year long. But when they don't for a
particular child, I just look at the learning that comes before and work on
that. I experienced this ten-fold in 1st grade. They are so young and can only
make the connections they are developmentally ready for. But, who listens???

Re: [MOSAIC] Help!

2007-10-04 Thread Kendra Carroll
Christina,
I heard a great report on NPR a few years ago. It told about a school in
Chicago that each year got more people on board until the whole school was in
agreement. I think this allows teachers not to feel pressured to starting
something new- which can be so intimidating. Therefore, you might use the
model of something similar to what Keene and Zimmerman did when they were first
learning about reading strategies. I think it would be important to allow
teachers to understand how they do it in their own reading. Also, you want
them to understand that this is not just another "fad" in education. I would
also think you would want to try not to present in too much of a lecture mode.
Teachers I know are more responsive to a different model of being taught-just
like our students:) Good luck and hope my rambling makes sense.

currently isn't even the position in my school, so i'd be the first) and I

I am the ONLY one who is fluent, even familiar in the comprehension
strategies as well as all the other amazing books out there including

very well prepared. I have to plan a year long staff development plan,
with an introductory presentation of the readers workshop model, and a
different strategy each month. I'd like to provide the teachers with
sample lessons, anchor charts, and videos of my own teaching. I remember
reading on this email group of someone having to do the same thing and I'd

Melissa,

I always devoted the first 3 weeks of school to a study of metacognition and
saturating my class in strategy talk. I basically wanted them to realize that
this class was different from other classes/teachers they might have had and
that the important thing in here was their thinking. We talked about justifying
our thoughts, having evidence, and the different types of thinking
(connections, questions, inferences, etc.). There are some great lessons on the
tools page about helping kids listen to their metacognitive voice, their
"little me" that sits on their shoulder while they read and makes comments. I
spent a brief week discussing each of the comp. strategies, then after the 3
weeks was up and I'd "set the stage" so to speak, I backed up and we worked on
connections and schema for 4-6 weeks. I spent about that much time on each of
the strategies, so I really just got another unit on questioning done before
Christmas break

Sydney,

It is always proper protocol to jump in on a discussion on a listserv.
That's what the listserv is for. :-)

You ask an interesting question. If I had to put MOT in a "category" I
would say it leans more toward the Whole Language perspective. This is
why I am generally surprised to see recommendations for the University
of Oregon materials, which to my knowledge are more Direct Instruction
oriented and which are heavily touted by the Reading First people, who
do not support Whole Language practices and have been known to actually
criticize them. From what I have read and from my experience, I don't
think Ellin Keene and/or MOT would be on the Reading First evaluators'
short list.

Other people may feel differently. However, right now there is an
investigation of Reading First going on in Washington, D.C. You don't
hear about it much in the news, and what you DO hear is very
simplistic. But there are horror stories out there regarding the
Reading First program, although for some districts it has worked very
well, or at least that's what they say.

Glad you are planning to do some reading on your own. :-)

[MOSAIC] Wilson Reading Program/Fundations

2007-03-22 Thread Kendra Carroll
Our staff has been going through training this week on these programs. Can
anybody tell me if and how one uses these in a whole language approach? I
just attended the Heinemann Institute with Ellin Keene in December. I agree
with her in the 50/50 approach between word level and comprehension. I know
that kids need a systematic approach to phonics. It just seemed that this
program teaches kids that decoding is reading. Am I wrong? Thanks for
helping!

Ellin is coming to Hershey PA July 11-12. This is an awesome 2 day event. I
highly recommend
it Right now Heinemann is offering some discounts if you register early.
I am including a link
to help you.

[MOSAIC] Literacy Support Group

2007-02-12 Thread Kendra Carroll
Hi everyone! I am new to Listserve. I am a first grade teacher who works at a
school where a few
of us are trying to use comprehension strategies. Many of us are wanting to
learn more. We
realize the support must come from within because many of those in higher up
position want to
go in different directions. My question is this: how are teachers in your
school meeting together
to discuss ideas? What works and what doesn't work? We have thought about
meeting at a local
coffee shop once or twice a month. What format would you use to discuss: book,
questions, etc?
Any suggestions would be most helpful. Thanks
