suggestion needed about du command run on PHP
Hi, I would like to run a du command to find out how many bytes of each databases is consuming under PHP+ Apache. But, the problem is I am not able to count the bytes of the databases in MySQL, because the user and group is set to MySQL. On the other hand, My Web server is running on user nobody and group nobody. So, What suggestion will you give me in order to count the bytes of each database is consuming using apache + PHP. Should I change the apache's user and group to mysql or Should I make the mysql database world readable. Any Suggestions is helpful. Re: Newbie win 2000 install question
Hello, I just ran into some problems with the mysql setup on win2000. I start mysql as a service. If you go into your control panel->administrative tools->services, you can start mysql. One more thing (if you didn't see it a couple days ago when I posted it): If you have problems inserting/deleting when you start mysql as a service, here is the fix that I use. In the administrative tools->services control panel. Select the mysql service, right click, and select properties. Select the "Log On" tab. Select Log on as: This account (and select the account you are logged in as using the browse button). Hope this helps, Brent At 08:09 PM 4/29/2001 , you wrote: >Did you install mysql as a service? Replication question -
Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone could help me/or has come across the following problem: It's to do with replication - Scenario: We have a publisher/subscriber as the same server. Using MERGE replication with 2 subscribers. The publisher database is our co-operate database with many records being deleted/inserted/updated. The subscriber database is very rarely changed. When doing a merge I get the following error messages in the conflict viewer. [Type of errors below] The row was inserted at 'PNT_DB1.mwrcdb' but could not be inserted at 'nec_4.mwrcdb'. INSERT statement conflicted with TABLE FOREIGN KEY constraint 'trs_emp_activity_fk1'. The conflict occurred in database 'mwrcdb', table 'trs_tsheet_header'. This row no longer exists in '[dbo].[trs_emp_activity]'. The row was inserted at 'PNT_DB1.mwrcdb' but could not be inserted at 'nec_4.mwrcdb'. INSERT statement conflicted with COLUMN FOREIGN KEY constraint 'trs_emp_activity_detail_fk1'. The conflict occurred in database 'mwrcdb', table 'trs_emp_activity', column 'emp_activity_id'. This row no longer exists in '[dbo].[trs_emp_activity_detail]'. For some strange reason - the conflicting records were deleted from PNT_DB1 which was the central database. Non of the these records would have been changed in the subscribers. Changes to these tables would only have come from the Publisher database. We are running SQL Server 7.0 SP3, on NT 4.0 SP5 - subscribers are running SQL Server Desktop SP3, Win 2000 prof SP1 Any help would much be appreciated. MERGE Tables
Hi, I have already posted this message but I got no reply I am really stuck on this topic - if anybody knows anything help would be greatly appreciated. I have only just joined this list today any help would be greatly appreciated. I have implemented the new MERGE table feature as part of my new install on version 3.23. I am finding a few small problems with usage of this functionality as follows. There are 4 identical tables namely asic_cache1, asic_cache2, asic_cache3, asic_cache4. Each table is structured identically as follows: field_index int(11)PRI DEFAULT 0 subject varchar(16)PRI search_type varchar(8) PRI segmentchar(3) grp_code int(11) DEFAULT 0 field_nr int(11) DEFAULT 0 value text DEFAULT NULL segment_header int(1) DEFAULT 0 record_nr int(11) DEFAULT 0 There is one index on each table and that is the primary key (subject, search_type, field_index). Each table contains approximately 20 000 000 rows. Hence my reason for using merge :) The merge table created is called asic_cache. It has exactly the same structure as above except there are no keys what so ever. My understanding is that there is no need for keys on the merge table as the table handler uses the keys on each individual table when doing the lookups. The keys on each table are of type ref. Here's the interesting part: I performed the following query and got a result in 0.2 secs approx. Qry = select * from asic_cache where subject = '10920411' and search_type = 'CE C' limit 10. When I run the following query without the limit clause mysql appears to go into a tail spin and the process runs on my linux machine for over 5 minutes! Qry = select * from asic_cache where subject = '10920411' and search_type = 'CE C'. I am guessing that it is doing a full table scan on each of the four table but I'm not sure and if so why? Thirdly, the following query has the same effect as above and blows the time of the query over 5 mintues. Qry = select * from asic_cache where subject = '10920411' and search_type = 'CE C' order by subject, search_type, field_index. Looking at the mysql doco on merge tables on one hand it says there is no need for indexes on the merge table itself but in the example in the doco it uses a key? This has got me really confused and I'm not sure if this is contributing to the above issues. Has anyone got any ideas on the matter?? RE: Ordinary users can crash mysql server
These points are all well considered, but the point is that I operate under the assumption that the bad guys out there already have this information, and that only legit people don't have it becuse they do not operate in those circles. And yes, if you are operating a service on the internet, you should be expected to act immediately on such news. There are too many out there ready to exploit holes in systems to the detriment of the entire internet. In essence as a sytem administrator you have to be ready to either a) act immediately or b) take your chances during the time you don't act. I see ful ldisclosure as a big heads up and I think it is more valuable than the downside of letting more bad people know of the problem, as, I noted, I see the black hats as already having the knowledge. I know it is an imprefect world, and , legitimately, the way most routers are set up, monday will be just fine for locking down the bug, bug I'm glad I know... But your points are well taken, I am just more pessimistic about the state of knowledge in the cracker community. Re: New filter
I know Sasha has been involved with the email police for awhile. I gotta tell ya, my opinion is negative. Sure, I understand the dynamics. Unwanted emails are intrusive. They waste bandwidth. They squander resources. Those type arguments, however, do not justify the intrusion the security squad impose on the innocents, in the name of protection and security. Freedom comes with a price tag, and one I would prefer to pay, as opposed to living in a controlled atmosphere, where freedoms dissipate in the name of security. Freedom is more valuable than security. Now, sure, there must be some security in life. But, there must also be a reasonable balance. And every security measure can be defeated, which eventually leads to tighter, stricter security. And did you ever notice, we never get asked we get told? This is email. It's not a bomb on a plane. Choices exist for a digest, or a newsgroup. Freedom has a price. I am more than willing to pay it. Just my opinion. RE: Ordinary users can crash mysql server
Hi Chris, You should not forget those users who depend greatly on the tech support (patches) of the manufacturer. Given your expertise and knowledge you might be able to protect yourself, but not everybody is (as a matter of fact even Gustavo said he isn't). In addition, to make things worse, today is Sunday, and given the usual working hours in most countries, there's a very small chance that someone from AB Konsulting has read this. On the other hand, quite a number of hobby vandals, who spend their free days looking for holes, might have found a nice new toy to play with, and Gustavo even provided the "how-to" . I agree with you on the first point: If this is a known bug, it has to be part of the "known-bug-list" and given it's severity, be stated clearly on the MySQL web site. Crashed server applications often bear the risk of allowing a hacker to execute his own code, thus making such a bug really dangerous, especially for web applications. Your third point is a bit optimistic... Are you really prepared to react immediately to all known or unknown security risks? If you have 10.000 users using your application on a daily basis, or if you have 100 sites running with it, every modification of a core component of your databases requires good planning and careful handling. On a production server you usually don't have the freedom to experiment a lot with your home-made patches. Don't get me wrong, I am not at all opposed to disclosure. This is what makes programs like MySQL, Linux etc. so powerful and more secure than closed-source software. Remember the problems with Interbase, or Hotmail (even better!) or the countless problems on Microsoft programs. It's indispensable to search for bugs, but again, give the manufacturer at least a chance to look into a matter before giving hackers a doorway to crash your machine and worse steal or destroy your data. Max connections on Freebsd
Hi, Is there someone who incremented the max_connection value to something above 100 (200) (300) on Freebsd 4.2? I had problems with mysql on freebsd 4.0, hooked up after some days without any good reason :). Some people told me thread libraries on freebsd 4.0 suck a bit. So I wonder if 4.2's thread libraries are stable enough to handle 200 concurrent threads?!. Bom dia, Gustavo, I am not in a position to comment nor to verify your warning. However, I am pretty annoyed by the way you make it public to the world. Unless I missed something here, but when someone discovers a security hole in any program, it's common standard to contact the manufacturer immediately, directly and offlist and give him a chance to comment and/or release a patch within a reasonable timeframe. If then, after a couple of weeks, you didn't get any response from the manfacturer, you should go public. I don't know if you did that, if you did I apologize and ask to ignore this message. Help! Replication MySQL <-> MS SQL Server 7
The company I work for is MS SQL Server mad - they use it as the core for one of their software products and pretty much all of their operation is based around it - sad isn't it?! ;o) Anyway, they now want a website with online ordering etc. and of course they want it to be linked via MS-SQL to their stock ordering and accounts systems. I only code for Linux when it comes to websites (WinNT/2K is just for offices as far as I'm concerned) so I usually use PHP/Perl and MySQL. The setup will be: MS-SQL server in warehouse (stock control) MS-SQL server in office (accounts) MySQL on web server (orders) The so-called 'Technical' Director wants any orders from the website to reduce the stock levels on the DB in the warehouse, and all of this to replicate with the DB in the office. Any ideas how I can do this? I know SybaseCT and FreeTDS enables PHP to connect to MS-SQL Servers, but do they do replication? I've also heard IBM have a UNIX<->NT database linking package, but I don't know what this is called. I don't need real-time replication, probably a 15mins (or nightly?) cron job would do, or maybe even just a table containing changes to the online database that would somehow apply those changes to the offline DB's..? Manipulators is (the only) section 5.1 in the on-line version, whereas it is section 5.66 (!) in the downloadable manual. As far as I can see the downloadable manual is fine, but the on-line version is - unless my proxy hasn't updated in 6 months - not. > -Original Message- > From: Sinisa Milivojevic [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: 29 April 2001 14:32 > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: RE: Problems with MySQL++ > > > Sander Pilon writes: > > > > > > It is fine and complete will all chapters and in all formats. > > > > > > > This page used to have lots of cool documentation... > > > > http://www.mysql.com/documentation/mysql++/5_Class.html > > > > > > > > Yes, and there two versions of manual. SSL, mysql, update
As far as I know, 'update' is a reserved word and you should quote it with reversed quotes (you know they are on my keyboard near '1'). I hope it helps. RE: newbie unable to connect to mysql
Your question IS for this list, as far as it concerns MySQL. I do understand it like this, and I think many people think this way here. Many of us strated here with 'stupid' questions. These lists are a great thing, I think, it's like a bread for newbies, and a way to join also advanced users.. and anybody can take use of these information exchanges. Otherwise would have been much more difficult to get such a broad spread of knowledge and experience. Thanx to the MySQL team, also! They are doing a great job! And is for free!.. Regarding to your question: you must identify what is the user and group name (mysql? on RH7) of your mysqld, then issue a command like chgrp yourgrp -R mysql_dir ( ? chgrp mysql -R /usr/share/mysql ) if you don't know where your mysql directories are, issue: find / -name mysql it simply does not have enough permissions to write there. try it on all your mysql directories. Daniel BI > I hope this question isn't too elementary for this list. I am brand new to > mysql. Working off redhat linux 7.0. I run "safe_mysql &" I get a message > saying it is connecting and then a message "mySql daemon ended." When I run > "./bin/mysqladmin create testDB" I get the following message: > > ..."connect to server at 'localhost' failed > error: can't connect to local mySql server through > socket '/tmp/mysql.sock(111)'" > > What am I doing wrong? indexing
i'm makin a search engine the table looks like this - --- | number | name | keywords | description | url | rank | --- query's are made to against keywords, and description which are a blob's. I want to index both of them but i don't know if i should use php index function to create the index or make one myself which could look like this - word | site | - site would contain the number's of the row which have the queryed word in their keyword or description. can some tell which way is faster or is there no difference and can someone tell me a better way if there is any and also any possible idea's on the php script required to ran a query for words thanks _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. - Before posting, please check: http://www.mysql.com/manual.php (the manual) http://lists.mysql.com/ (the list archive) To request this thread, e-mail <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, e-mail <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Trouble unsubscribing? Hi, I am trying to compile Apache with PHP4/MySQL support. PHP4 compiles/installs fine, but when I compile Apache with PHP4/MySQL support, I get an error when linking the MySQL shared library libmysqlclient.a. It does not tell you for sure that it will use them all: http://www.mysql.com/doc/E/X/EXPLAIN.html Have you tried running an OPTIMIZE TABLE to see if that helps?
