[mythtv-users] videomenu.xml - ??
I'm trying to get the music-videos-shuffle thing working. I googled around a bit, and settled on the add-an-option-to-videomenu.xml solution that's been mentioned here before. I've run into a slight problem, though -- I've been poking around for weeks and I can't find that menu anywhere on my frontend. I'm running a recent 0.17, and I can't find my "shuffle music videos" button, nor can I find a menu that looks like videomenu.xml -- at least, I can't find the "video manager" button that's also listed in videomenu. Was this file deprecated? Am I doing something totally wrong? Where should I see a new option show up? And what's the "video manager"? I can see all my videos in mythvideo, but I've tried pushing "menu" in browse, list, and gallery modes and no dice. I could put it in library.xml, but it seems like the sort of thing that should be in the video system somewhere rather than wandering around on its own. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

I used the script mentioned above so everything should be about the same. Here is what I did to stop the menu from poping up when using the xbox remote. The lirc configuration file for the remote for Xebian wide is at /etc/lirc/lircmd.conf What I did in their was comment everything out with the "#" at the beginning of each line. I did leave one line not commented out which was the left arrow. The reason I did that was so I could make the screen-saver go away with the remote. Now when not in mythtv you will not be able to use the remote to control anything except move the pointer to the left. Example: #MOVE_N * UP #MOVE_E * RIGHT #MOVE_S * DOWN MOVE_W * LEFT Also the config files for lirc within mythtv is at /home/live/.mythtv/lircrc In this file I made the SKIP- and SKIP+ equal to the Q and Z key so I could use those keys to skip the commercial cut points. They weren't configured like that after I install, they were the only 2 keys not assigned. Example: # Seek to previous commercial cut point begin prog = mythtv button = SKIP- repeat = 4 config = Q end # Seek to next commercial cut point begin prog = mythtv button = SKIP+ repeat = 4 config = Z end You should be able to see what to do once you open those files. Re: [mythtv-users] Alternative to Zap2It?
Well, thank you, Mr. Negativity. I admit, it's not that useful for long-term scheduling, because it is only 24 hours in advance. However, there might be other short term information within the stream that could be used. If they put out the current time of day in the signal, then it might be a more accurate time than NTP - even with NTP running, I have to record an extra minute before and after my desired show because of the clock difference. Perhaps it could be used as a way of updating the listings that come from Zap2It, due to last minute lineup changes. For instance, if a baseball game is scheduled for three and a half hours, but it's a pitchers' dual, and only lasts two and a half hours, then the networks fill in that extra space with something. Maybe the listing will be updated, and the TV viewer would know about it. If there's information on the current show in that stream, maybe MythTV could use it. I've seen several times where Zap2It had the wrong program description. Those are just three of the uses I can think of, off the top of my head. And please don't say, "submit a patch, then", because: A) I'm not interested in this feature right now (though if what was in the stream was documented somewhere, and it was in my local viewing area, I might be), and B) I'm sick of hearing you say it in such a rude way (mostly on the dev list). -- Joe --- Donavan Stanley <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > On 4/20/05, Joe Votour <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Short answer - it's not going to work right now. > > Of course the big question would be "why on earth > would you want this?". > ___ > mythtv-users mailing list > mythtv-users@mythtv.org > http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users > __ Do You Yahoo!? I seem to recall reading that OpenGL support is a compile option (I think some readers were trying to get OpenGL vsync support), so it may be missing from your current installation. Perhaps a recompilation of myth/mythgallery may solve this problem? As glxgears runs, your system obviously has a working OpenGL layer, so it could be that Myth doesn't have it compiled in which is then causing MythGallery to fail. Re: [mythtv-users] Alternative to Zap2It?
The MPEG-2 standard does allow for "information" frames, which contain things like guide/program information. However, the exact format might differ from cable operator to cable operator (in the U.S. anyway, it seems that Europe has better standards for this kind of thing). Your VCR likely doesn't understand MPEG-2 though, so it's probably getting the information from the VBI. I don't think that MythTV has support for this, and AFAIK, the Hauppauge hardware cards (PVR-x50) have limited VBI support in the driver at this point (although with the newer releases, that may have changed). Robin, Have you considered compiling the kernel and/or the required software like ALSA, LIRC and ivtv, or you do want to only use Synaptic? I am quite happily running 2.6.10 with ALSA 1.0.8m LIRC 0.7.0 and ivtv 0.2.0-rc3f with no problems. You could download the new kernel via Synaptic, and then manually install the troika yourself which is very straightforward. When I first installed MythTV on a dedicated PVR before Christmas, I wanted to use the flexibility of apt-get to easily get the components I needed, but as kernels get released frequently and certain hardware needs patching (such as DVB in my case) I decided to go down the compilation route. Now everything can be setup as relates to your own system which can offer more performance and also can remove unwanted options. I used apt-get to install myth-0.16 in the first instance, and this magically pulled in all the dependencies too, which was incredibly useful. However, I am hoping that when I next install a new version, it will be from source or CVS, to facilitate getting new patches and features. I will continue to use FC2 for the forseeable future, now that my system is stable finally and everything seems to be working, so if you are willing to spend a little while like I did getting to grips with compiling, I'd say it's well worth it. [mythtv-users] FC2 kernel problems
Hi, I am currently running a stable MythTV .18 install on FC2 kernel 2.6.9-1.11 I wanted to upgrade my nvidia drivers to the latest 7174 version. Through synaptic, the only kernel it shows for nvidia drivers in FC2 is 2.6.10-1.770 (and 771). So I considered upgrading to this kernel, but I can't find it. I can find a 2.6.10-2.1 kernel but there are none of the required Myth packages (ivtv, lirc, etc) available other than alsa No matter what FC2 kernel I look at, I can't find one that has both the kernel and all the required modules available. Am I missing something here or is it becoming a necessity to upgrade to FC3? I'd prefer not to have to go FC3 if FC2 will continue to be supported for a while as the FC3 upgrade seems way more involved. [mythtv-users] multiple audio tracks on digital TV
In the Boston area, I receive two audio tracks on WGBXDT (PBS, "43-1"). The problem is that the "default" audio track is the wrong one. I think it belongs to a different 43-x subchannel or something. I have to manually hit "+" to get to the right audio track. The problem is that when I record something on that channel, I also record the wrong audio track. Is there a way to set this up so that I get the correct audio track when I tune to this channel? I've fixed up my zap2it subscription to also download 44-2,44-3,44-4 but that hasn't fixed anything (but now I can see where the audio track is supposed to be). --Rob ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
[mythtv-users] Alternative to Zap2It?
I kind of asked this question before but most likely not phrased properly... My VCR gets it programming guide directly from the cable feed. Once the quality degraded, it continued to be degraded for subsequent recordings, for all channels and recording profiles. A reboot would solve the issue for another day or three. I believe the issue was that the PVR-250 was overheating. I can no longer prove it, though. I am using an MSI Hermes 845GV case, and the way the slots are laid out, when the box is horizontal, the heat-producing components on the PVR-250 were underneath the card and not well ventilated. I moved the card to the upper slot to give it more space between the card and the motherboard, and re-oriented the case vertically with the card at the top. I also put a small fan above the card itself, to help pull warm air out of the case and away from the card. I haven't had this problem since. However, I also abandoned my bug-ridden SuSE / Xfree86 installation and moved to a problem-free Gentoo / Xorg-X11 installation within a few days of re-orientation, so I can't state with absolute certainty that it was a heat issue. It's certainly worth looking into, though. If it's due to heat, then shutting the machine down for 15 minutes or so, and then recording a program or watching TV should let you know. Although it's odd that this would happen after 3 months of good results, unless you lost some cooling fan(s) in the case, or the ambient temperature rose drastically. As far as cable interference, any problem that would yield a noticeably distorted picture from the PVR-250, would probably be noticeable on your TV as well when watching direct. You can always try swapping the cable segments between your TV and the PVR-250, as well. Another possibility is interference from another internal device - have you added any hardware to the box? [mythtv-users] [solved] HDTV performance in 0.18
My particular problem was (apparently) that AGP was actually disabled. Without checking /proc/drivers/nvidia/agp/status there was nothing else to indicate this; X diligently did its thing and didn't log a single warning or error related to AGP, regardless of the NvAGP setting. I spent some time troubleshooting my module settings, but now the AGP-related modules are being loaded properly on boot again. I can now render HD without using XvMC, with about 5-10% idle. This has (so far) been more stable. Thanks to everyone who made suggestions. Only minor open questions remain... I still don't know what you should put on the "./configure" line to compile optimally for athlon-xp. The manual is ambiguous/out-of-date. On Mon, 18 Apr 2005, Brandon Beattie wrote: MythTV is often compiled with no support for MMX or anything more than pentium pro optimization. If you didn't enable processor specific optimization and mmx, and opengl when doing a ./configure then this could have the bad effect. (Caveat: this is rendering to 800x600 24-bit S-Video on an fx5200.) XV and OpenGL work, renderaccel is true, AGP functional, and by the way, xine can play HDTV with Xv no problem. I'm using libmpeg2 and suid/realtime, and the system can just _barely_ handle it without deinterlacing. It's pegged at 95% CPU, and still drops occasional frames. If I turn on deinterlacing, then it's real bad, dropping frames every few seconds. As before, toggling libmpeg, realtime, and opengl appear to have zero effect on performance, despite log output from the frontend suggesting they're working. I keep finding references to people who are doing HDTV with 2100's and 2400's and so forth. I wonder what the difference is - rendering to a different screen resolution or color depth perhaps? Saving grace is that in 0.18 XvMC finally works, almost. I still get ugly flicker and stutter from the OSD, and so far am averaging about 1 hard-lock (reboot required) per day... [mythtv-users] Recording Quality [0.16]
I first installed MythTV 0.16 in Jan 2005. It worked perfectly and I was smug and content. I didn't tweak the box any beyond the parameters of Jarod's basic install instructions on the principle that if it ain't broke don't fix it. For three months all was good. Then on April 13 the video and audio quality began to degrade. Old shows still play flawlessly, but newly recorded shows tend to flash, chirp loudly and have intermittant blockiness. Since then I have made adjustments to the recording profiles bit rates based on archival information in this list. I have tightened my cable connection with a wrench. [mythtv-users] no OpenGL transitions in mythgallery
Hello, sorry if I ask this again, I already posted it months ago but it's still not solved. I can't use "OpenGL transitions" from within mythgallery, as well as I can't use the GL visualizations from within mythmusic. It says "no opengl available" (or just crashes). I have an up-to-date FC2 mythbox. I do use apt-get, I always have the latest stable packages, kernel and kernel modules. I re-executed all the instructions on Jarod's guide many times. I can run glxgears (as well as any other OpenGL program) in hw accelerated mode both as mythtv user and root. I already tried to suid mytht[front|back]end. You have to follow the diskless client guides you can find on the internet, except for the part where you load the kernel. Because you can load the kernel from your CF card. And that's the only thing you have to put on that card. And maybe grub or lilo as a bootloader. You can tell the kernel where it can find it's root filesystem with this parameter: nfsroot=192.168.7.14:/export/nfs You have to put this in your lilo or grub config. My initial attempts at down-res'ing the HD shows gives a glacially slow 4 fps using mencoder compared to the SD shows running at 27 fps (under msmpegv2). Of course, openDivx/mpeg4 compresses at >50 fps on SD , I just like the ease of moving shows between windows/linux without adding codecs. Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Rebuild source rpms HOWTO
Axel, I'm on atrpms-devel already. :) I was going to have something ready last night, but I got interrupted, so it will likely be by this weekend. The only motivation that I had for recompiling 0.17 from the SRPMS was to enable OpenGL vsync, which was disabled by default in 0.17. If 0.18 ships with it enabled by default, then I won't be rebuilding. Therefore, there aren't really any changes that I would be resubmitting. However, one thing that I might look into would be a patch similar to how XvMC works in the ATrpms builds - it's available in the default RPM, but ships disabled. That would be great for OpenGL vsync, I think - no more recompiling to enable/disable it. The only catch is that it would require some database work I'm sure (to add in the extra entry for saving the state). If I get the chance (maybe not, since stuff at the job is picking up now - I have to give them my best software :) ), I'll look into it. For now though, I'll try to get a coherent guide to building the RPMs up on my website sometime this week. -- Joe --- Axel Thimm <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > On Tue, Apr 19, 2005 at 06:37:10PM -0700, Jarod > Wilson wrote: > > On Tuesday 19 April 2005 18:22, Joe Votour wrote: > > > > The required macros have been posted on the > atrpms-devel list a > > > > few times. > > [...] > > > Yes, in fact, I pulled down the macros from one > of > > > your postings on atrpms-devel. Re: [mythtv-users] PVR-250 is hot! hot! hot!
IMO your pushing things too much for the long term health of your system. I suggest picking up a quiet fan from directron.com or something like that and adding one. You could possibly run it on +12 - +5 = 7V from the power supply by going between the 12 and 5 volt leads to keep it quieter. I'd also be curious about your hdd temperature. Bake a hard drive for a few months and it tends to hurry the RMA requirement.. Still you may be perfectly ok, it just seems chancy to me with a poor ventillation case, with both the fast GPU and PVR card in the long term. 64C isn't really ideal for the CPU either. A very good heat sink with some proper thermal transfer compound may helpa little there.. Good luck. That never seems to work properly for me. After doing the store, it would work fine until I rebooted, and I'd have to reload alsamixer and reset a couple switches before the sound would work. I've found by leaving dmix open all the time in the background, the settings seem to survive a reboot without any problems. Not sure why this is, 'aslactl store/restore' worked fine when I was running FC2. If you want to save your alsamixer settings run "alsactl store" after they are set, and add "alsactl restore" somewhere in your startup scripts after the alsa modules and sound card drivers are loaded, and it will restore your previous settings. -Chris On 4/20/05, Micah Wedemeyer <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > I'm currently stuck at the sound part of Jarod's guide. [mythtv-users] PVR-250 is hot! hot! hot!
Hi, My Myth box has extremely poor ventilation, and subsequently, runs very hot. I wanted it to be extra quiet, so I shut off all the rear exhaust fans except the PSU fan. The PSU fan is pretty slow; I've reduced fan speed (with a FanMate) for the CPU fan, and I let the GPU (Geforce4 Ti4200) go full speed. All in all, pretty quiet. As for temps, it's another story. I don't have lm_sensors working (something about their eeprom module causing issues with ivtv's tveeprom). However, my case has some temp sensors. The heatsink on the CPU is about 64C, and the internal case temp is up there as well. However, I think this is still within spec (AMD Sempron), so I'm fine with it. I might undervolt the CPU a little, to see if that would help. Anyways, I don't care about temps as long as it's not causing problems. My cause for concern, however, is the PVR-250. It has no fan on it, and it is getting much hotter than anything else in the case. I taped a temp sensor on the back of the card, and it routinely gets up to 74C. I can't find any specs on the operating range for it. Has anyone had any problems with their PVR-250 overheating? What are the symptoms. [mythtv-users] Setting a recording profie for firewire capture device
Hi, I was setting up Myth with a firewire capture card, and was wondering whether it is necessary tos et up any recording profile stuff. (the steps here are from memory, so may not be 100% right) If you go into the recording profiles, and select the firewire input, it takes you to a blank screen. However, if you press 'Select' again, you go to the usual profile setup screen. Should I be setting things up there? That's where you change settings like the capture size etc. The initial blank screen discourages me from doing anything, but since it's possible to set things, I thought I'd ask. Any thoughts? Regards, Peter PS In the course of my messing around, I discovered that you need to uncheck the 'AC3 passthrough' toggle before you can get sound to work when capturing via firewire. David and John, You can use projectX to demux the video and audio then use transcode on the video, then avimerge to remux them: my transcode parameters are as follows (two pass for best quality lowest file size) transcode --nice +10 -y ffmpeg -F mpeg4 -Z 640x,fast *** *** optionally, --export_asr [23] (2=4:3 3=16:9) -w (bitrate) -R [123] (multi-pass, single pass, etc) -I [34] (deinterlacing) Here is what I would do for 1920x1080i 1) use projectx to demux and fix out of order packets (resulting in *.mpv *.ac3) 2) use transcode to transcode the video down first pass: transcode --nice +10 -y ffmpeg -F mpeg4 -Z 640x,fast -I 4 --export_asr 3 -R 1 -w 2000 -i filename.mpv -o /dev/null second pass: transcode --nice +10 -y ffmpeg -F mpeg4 -Z 640x,fast -I 4 --export_asr 3 -R 2 -w 2000 -i filename.mpv -o outputfile.nosound.avi 3) use avimerge to multiplex the ac3 back into the avi avimerge -i filename.ac3 outputfile.nosound.avi -o outputfile.avi Then I move the file over to my videos directory for MythVideo to playback (using mplayer). Ways to speed up the transcoding process: 1) don't deinterlace (delinterlace on playback using mplayer -vf pp=lb) 2) do single pass, and bump the bitrate up 3) don't resize (if disk space is the issue, you can just re-encode to MPEG4 HD at about 5k bitrate.) -- John Sturgeon <>< http://www.sturgeonfamily.com/mythtv.php ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

[mythtv-users] HDTV Playback Questions
I have a few odd problem that I haven not been able to figure out while watching HDTV. I searched the archive, but nothing seemed to match. So if these have already been answered, I apoligize. Incase any of this helps: I am running myth 0.17, using Knoppmyth R5A12, and using pcHDTV-3000 for OTA HDTV, a Celeron 2.4 Ghz, Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 and a nVidia FX 5200. The first problem concerns the way the recorded program shows up on my screen. When I watch a program recorded on NBC, WB, or CBS, The image dosen't display properly on the screen. The picture is shifted to the right, and about 1/3 of the picture is cut off. Just to be clear, I am not talking about overscan. For example, if [-XXX-] is what is supposed to be displayed on my screen , and [ ] is my screen, I end up with this displayed: [ -XX]X- I can use the manual zoom option to move the picture around until it is watchable, but it is not exactly convienant. I think it might have something to do with the fact that these stations bordcast in 1080i and because I use DVI, I can only display 720p. The second problem involves "noise" in the picture or sound channels missing. For example, If I recorded Scrubs, and then immediatly after and on the same channel, another episode of Scrubs, The first one will come out fine, but the second one will have Matrix-styled green and grey blocks that randomly scroll through the screen and eventually making it unwatchable. For an example of the audio problem, I recorded The Office last night, and while the picture was fine, half way through the opening credits, the audio became distorted. If I turned the volume WAY up, I could hear the background noise, (people typing, and phones ringing, etc) but no dialog. Then Immediatly afterwards I recorded Medium flawlessly. I'm stumped. Any help or inputs would be appreciated. -Mat ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
Re: [mythtv-users] Request info from working M10K frontend.
Thanks to everyone for the replies. I'm going to try installing knoppmyth, and upgrading it to .18, since that is what the backend is now, and I had the same problem with .17. Since Jon has it working, and his interrupts look the same as mine, I can stop going down that path. I did try a pci nic, and it had a different interrupt than the video, but that did not solve the problem. Bummer. I sat squinting at the "-v all" logs into the wee hours last night, and came up with this puzzling thought: I assume the capture card has to capture at the rate the video source is clocked at, and in my case, the audio is sampled at 48kHz. On the front end, the video is written in sync with vertical retrace, and I assume the audio is written in sync with the video according to timing info in the stream. My question is, what happens if the video source rate is slightly slower, or the because of my video modeline, the output is slightly faster, than the standard. Or forget the standard, what if the source is slightly slower than the sink. I know the standard sets the display rate, but no two clocks are identical. In the case of live tv, would the ringbuffer slowly be drained, causing the pauses when it runs out? Or is myth able to compensate somehow? How about the audio, what happens if the frontends clock is slightly faster than the backend, is myth able to adjust the audio output rate, or does the audio buffer drain, causing pauses? What I see in the logs is a REQUEST_BLOCK _RI immediately after every Read(). At first the time of the Read() after the request is very short, but then bumps up to a slightly larger number. At this point, the audio buffer is slowing falling behind, until it runs out and pauses. When it restarts, there is a brief period of fast responses from the backend, but it then falls back to the old rate, the audio buffer again falling behind. I'm going to try and graph the response times, the audio buffer size, and the pauses, and see if I still see that pattern, now that I've had some sleep. What do these drivers provide? Do they provide mpeg2 decoding on chip? Or is it just 3d acceleration? Does it replace the need for viaxvmc? [mythtv-users] Re: Zap2it Labs not delivering any listings today
I just noticed that mythfilldatabase is not pulling any listing for today or tomorrow. The size of the data file is quite small (35k -vs- 145k normally). My account is still active and correct (just checked it) and the site shows programming on its web interface so I am assuming that they are having problems with the data service. Anyone else seeing this? Bill I've noticed the same thing. According to my backend status report in MythWeb, I'm now down to 10 days of programming, instead of the normal 11 or 12. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Here's at least a few of them: KOMO (ABC) - 104 KING (NBC) - 105 KIRO (CBS) - 107 KCTS (PBS) - 109 KTWB (WB) - 110 KCPQ (FOX) - 113 KONG - 116 There are actually multiple KCTS channels (I think 108 and like 112 are other KCTS feeds), and I may be forgetting some others. Basically, just add 100 to whatever the analog cable variant is for any of Seattle's channels, save KSTW (UPN), which Comcast doesn't yet carry (and *just* started showing up OTA around Seattle). -- Jarod Wilson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Got a question? If irw exits immediately and lircd terminates at the same time, check your syslog (/var/log/messages) for indications of your lirc is compiled to use it. I had this problem using the rpm for lirc on atrpms using lirc_serial. I went back to my cvs checkout of lirc because of it. My syslog said something about /dev/lirc not being present. Seemed like a problem with the modules… I hope this helps. -- cyth ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
[mythtv-users] Booting from CF, everything else over NFS
> Well, I'm booting from CF and mounting /usr and the MythVideo library > over nfs, but streaming actual TV playback. I've got an 8MB CF and a CF to IDE adapter. I've got a machine currently running FC3, and it's noisy. I can't pxeboot the machine, and I'd like to get the hard drive out of there for noise reasons. Is it just a matter of doing a fdisk / mkfs on the CF device, copying over /boot, copying the contents of the existing drive over to the NFS server and changing /etc/fstab to have the mount point of / to be over NFS? ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
Re: [mythtv-users] Mythfrontend kills LIRCD process.
Have you tried [re]starting lircd after the frontend starts up? What happens then? If that works, I would then look at restarting lircd, quitting the frontend and starting the frontend to see if it is repeatable.
