[mythtv-users] mythbackend dies after specifying recording profiles

2005-05-03 Thread eckzow
I'm using a Winfast 2000 Expert tv tuner card. I've used it in my
AMD64 box, versions 0.16 through 0.18, never had a hitch. Now I've
placed it into a PIII box that I'm going to try to dedicate.
Unfortunately I've got it all set up, but when I go to watch Live TV,
the backend up and dies. Here's a log with "-v all" -- this occured
in version 0.18, I blew away my install and put in 0.16 and still have
the problem. This log is from 0.16 while I recompile 0.18...

seconds, followed by the main menu again. If I try to go back to Live

I'm in Brisbane, Australia and did this a couple of weeks ago. This
may hurt a little.

Start here:
http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php

I also referenced Jani Talikka's guide:
http://www.users.on.net/~jani/dvico-mythtv.html

I used bits and pieces from Jarod's, Jani's and even Martin Smith's
guide (the one you have already found). Jani compiles a custom kernel
and uses card-specific drivers, which I didn't want to do. I mostly
stuck to Jarod's guide as it seemed to have the general stuff covered,
but make sure you read all 3 before starting.

The biggest thing in Jarod's guide that was wrong for me was the
kernel choice. I spent at least a day bashing my head against the
wall to work this stuff out, so here goes:

1) Instead of the _FC3 version listed in that guide, use the
"rhfc3.at" version. This currently means sticking to 2.6.10 - in step
6 use this command:
apt-get install kernel=2.6.10-1.770_14.rhfc3.at

The reason for this is that _FC3 doesn't include the cx88-dvb module,
apparently the Fedora Core guys don't think it's fully stable yet.
However, even after installing the correct package you will find that
cx88-blackbird loads instead of cx88-dvb; this is because the
"kmodule" command still returns the wrong thing.

I couldn't find any way to stop it doing that that so I ended up
hacking rc.sysinit (not recommended).

2) In section 10, under "DVB capture cards" follow Jani Talikka's
guide, that has most of it covered.

Section 5.3 of Jani's guide has info about the LinuxTV apps you need
for your original question. Finding a list of frequencies to give the
"scan" program is a pain, but google should give them to you
eventually.

3) The LinuxTV page for this card has links to kernel patches, but
they are already loaded in the kernel I recommended:
http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/Kworld_V-Stream_Xpert_DTV

You will note there is no lirc information for this card's remote yet.
I couldn't get it working either.

4) run the "scan" program, and keep the channels.conf it produces.
Take note of each station's unique settings (everything except the
last 3 numbers, there will be a number of lines for each station where
only those numbers differ; one for each channel found).

5) Tuning the channels into MythTV is all kinds of fun. I ended up
using the mythtvsetup channel editor to enter 5 sets of frequency
information (everything you wrote down in step 4) for each of the 5
stations available to me, each of which located 3-5 channels. The
scan can take anywhere up to 30 seconds per frequency set.

Step 4&5 probably don't need to be that complicated; you may be able
to get a list of frequencies and let MythTV auto-detect everything
else. Didn't work for me though.

If you manage to get it working without going insane consider yourself lucky :)

Actually what I use is the FC3/update kernel (2.6.11-1.14_FC3) with the
following additional packages:-
  * bttv-kmdl-2.6.11-1.14_FC3
  * video4linux-kmdl-2.6.11-1.14_FC3
  * ivtv-kmdl-2.6.11-1.14_FC3
  * saa7134-kmdl-2.6.11-1.14_FC3
  * cx88-kmdl-2.6.11-1.14_FC3

You may not need the ivtv (I have a Hauppauge PVR-350 in the box as
well), but I think all the others are necessary.

I didn't need any loading hacks for this card (I do for the ivtv ones).

This basically just worked for me entering only the base frequency of
the DVB mux - which I got from the BBC website or the DVB tools config
files (one per transmitter set).

Can't vouch for the sanity in this case.

I also didn't use the K-World remote and driver - the remote is horrid
anyway so getting it working seems pointless.

10.0.0.2 is my mythbox IP adress. I guess this is something in the code

I guess MythPhone is trying to grab port 5060 and listen for messages, but
you have Asterisk running on the same box and that has already grabbed 5060.
Hence the "Failed to bind..." message.
Within the MythPhone configuration, change the port number from 5060 to
something else like 5070. Should fix your issues.

Yep, that did the trick.
Changed my sip extention to use port 5061 in the asterisk config and
changed mythphone to use that same port and it works!! I can now call my

that... 8-)

I can set mythtv audio to
use ALSA:dmix-digital and mythmusic works also. Brilliant.

Thanx people for your help.

[mythtv-users] Ditched the Epia and bought a Aopen XCu be with Nforce 2 chipset - best move ever!

2005-05-03 Thread Barker Thomas

I was running a frontend and backend on an EPIA m10k for the
last 8 months or so. It was ok, a little slow and always a pain to compile,
transcode, get the h/w mpeg2 decoder working. I finally gave in the other day
and decided to move for an easier faster life.

I shall be ebaying my old epia very soon I think.

For £150 I got a nforce 2 aopen xcube, dvd 16x dual layer
writer and a sempron 2600, I used my old hard drive (120gb) and old mem (512).
200W power supply also so still no worries with leaving it on 24/7.

The cube itself has onboard audio and geforce mx 4 etc..
After installing FC3 from scratch and and setting up ATRPMS and getting
mythtv-suite. A few configurations and a mysql source all is back to normal.
And so much faster and smoother than ever before.

I did try using XVMC acceleration for displaying live tv,
but disliked the fact things were in B/W and also it seemed very sketching,
kinda streaking with white lines, so I turned that off. CPU usage without XvMc
is laughable anyhow so makes no odds.

I must say im impressed with the dvd rip facility, wish you
could specify lower bit rates though.

One thing I wish we could sort out, is burning files to dvd.

I see mythburn and nuv2burn (or some similar name) made a
good start, but haven't got too far yet. Would be nice to see.

Many thanx

Tom

[mythtv-users] apt-get errors //yum is the solution?

2005-05-03 Thread iwan
?

Hi,

I am expieriencing troubles with atp-get
and I was reading a few posts here.
1 of the solutions where:
-
You must edit your /etc/apt/sources.list. The entry for
freshrpms.net is no longer correct. You need to add us5 to the front of
the address
-
That did not work for
me.

Anyway I used yum to update my system and
that worked...
is this the correct way to do
this?

In this guide:
http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php
They use allot of atp-get commands ...and I am kind of stuck at the
moment.
Is there a way to replace the "apt-get commands" by "yum
commands"?

Thanks,

Thanks Doug. I think we are making some progress now :-)
It looks like we're exposing a bug in the kde3.2.x version of KCmdLineArgs
to me. I use 3.3.0 and 3.3.1 and it works fine.

I changed the call to KCmdLineArgs::init because the old call kept
producing a compiler warning about 'init' is deprecated or something
similar.

Because I can't reproduce the problem here it is not possible for me to
debug it.
If you have the time there is a few things you could try to track the
problem
down.

Its a long shot but I wonder if the compiler is getting confused about
which
init call to use. Though I can't see how that could be.

Could you try changing it to this and try again.:-
KCmdLineArgs::init(argc, argv, "mythbrowser", "mythbrowser", usage, version,
false);

That should remove any ambiguity about which call to use for the compiler.

Another thing I noticed looking at the code is the order in which the
arguments are
parsed and the creation of the KApplication object looks back to front to
me.
Move 'KApplication a(argc, argv)' to just after
'KCmdLineArgs::addCmdLineOptions(options)'
and before KCmdLineArgs * args = KCmdLineArgs::parsedArgs();
so it looks something like this:-

KCmdLineArgs::init(argc, argv, "mythbrowser", "mythbrowser", usage, version,
false);
KCmdLineArgs::addCmdLineOptions(options);
KApplication a(argc, argv);
KCmdLineArgs *args = KCmdLineArgs::parsedArgs();

That looks more like the example code in the KDE docs. In fact I don't think
we need to pass the arguments to KApplication at all and just replace
KApplication a(argc, argv) with KApplication a;

Thanks for your time.

Paul

that is no problem. (I hope)

[mythtv-users] Media MVP in the UK

2005-05-03 Thread dave
Hi,
I am interested in using a Hauppage Media MVP as a frontend for
viewing streams from DVB-T based myth backend. A couple of
questions:

   (1) Can anyone confirm it is possible to view DVB-T streams recorded
as TS? (I understand they are mpeg2 but have a .nuv extension.)

   (2) I have seen on this list there are two types of MVP available and
the one "with the yellow dot" is the correct one to get. However the
UK Hauppage site doesn't show this model, neither do most of the UK
vendors. Can anyone explain the exact model needed in the UK?
(Hauppage do seem to have a habit of changing what is inside the box
and calling it the same name, eg Nova-T!)

Thanks,
Dave

errors, as well as when I press the Menu (M) button in MythVideo.
I read in the Docs that illegal instructions are usually from incorrect
CPU specs in the configure but was supposed to be fixed in 0.18.
Anyone had similar problems?

Try this:

lspci -v | less

This will list lots of information about all the pci devices in your computer,
which should include the sound card. The "| less" part of the command pipes
the output through "less," which will let you view it one page at a time,
scroll up and down, etc. Look for anything that says "audio."

Try this also:

lsmod | less

This will list all the loaded modules, which should include your sound driver.

Thanks Doug. I think we are making some progress now :-) It looks like
we're exposing a bug in the kde3.2.x version of KCmdLineArgs to me. I
use 3.3.0 and 3.3.1 and it works fine.

I changed the call to KCmdLineArgs::init because the old call kept
producing a compiler warning about 'init' is deprecated or something
similar.

Because I can't reproduce the problem here it is not possible for me to
debug it.
If you have the time there is a few things you could try to track the
problem down.

Its a long shot but I wonder if the compiler is getting confused about
which init call to use. Though I can't see how that could be.

Could you try changing it to this and try again.:-
KCmdLineArgs::init(argc, argv, "mythbrowser", "mythbrowser", usage,
version, false);

That should remove any ambiguity about which call to use for the
compiler.

Another thing I noticed looking at the code is the order in which the
arguments are parsed and the creation of the KApplication object looks
back to front to me.
Move 'KApplication a(argc, argv)' to just after
'KCmdLineArgs::addCmdLineOptions(options)'
and before KCmdLineArgs * args = KCmdLineArgs::parsedArgs(); so it looks
something like this:-

KCmdLineArgs::init(argc, argv, "mythbrowser", "mythbrowser", usage,
version, false); KCmdLineArgs::addCmdLineOptions(options);
KApplication a(argc, argv);
KCmdLineArgs *args = KCmdLineArgs::parsedArgs();

That looks more like the example code in the KDE docs. In fact I don't
think we need to pass the arguments to KApplication at all and just
replace KApplication a(argc, argv) with KApplication a;

Thanks for your time.

Paul

[mythtv-users] Mythstream (not mythstreamtv)

2005-05-03 Thread Morrison, Kerry E.
Hi all,
I decided to install mythstream over the weekend and it didn't work out well. I
install all the prerequisites, qmake. make, make install. It compiles just
fine. Oh yeah, I changed the mythtv path. I checked and the plugin is where it
belongs. I edited the 3 .xml files and triple checked them. I've tried various
themes. Mythstream just doesn't show up. In my searching around I found a .diff
from April. Do I need to apply it? Does the plugin just not work with 0.18? The
post wasn't real specific. Here's what I have. Debian unstable, mythtv-0.18,
release from source. Plugins are mythdvd, mythmusic, mythvideo, mythweather and
mythphone. Also mythweb and mythstreamtv. I apologize up front if the answer
has been posted, I just can't seem to find much info on this plugin.

[mythtv-users] Re: Ditched the Epia and bought a Aopen XCu be with Nforce 2 chipset - best move ever!

2005-05-03 Thread Micah.Wedemeyer
Before everyone else jumps in saying "You shouldn't have given up..."
let me just say, I did the same thing and got the same results.

I went from an Epia MII-10k to a mATX nForce-3 board w/ a Sempron 2600,
and I am much happier as well. Like you said, all the extra horsepower
means that XvMC is easy to ignore. I still use my PVR-250 to record
into MPEG-2, but I then transcode down to MPEG-4. I set the original
recording bitrate super-high to get the maximum quality on original
recording, then transcode down to much lower settings. I end up with a
slightly better picture than just watching the cable directly through
the TV, and a _MUCH_ better picture than I ever saw on the Epia, with or
without XvMC. I still get the odd prebuffering pause, but not nearly as
bad as before. Plus, if I ever decide to take the HDTV dive, there's a
possibility, assuming I can get Nvidia's XvMC working.

Too bad that right after I made the switch, my HDD died on me. I'm
eagerly awaiting the replacement so I can get back to exploring all the
neat stuff that a stable, high-horsepower platform can offer!

Micah

P.S. Even though I failed with my Epia, I still would like to thank all
the people at the Unichrome project for all their help and hard work.
Without their support, I probably would have smashed my Epia to pieces,
instead of giving up peacefully and selling it off.

Wouldn't it make more sense for MythTv to act as an extension of your

I bought a new signal booster, that claims to be 'Digital Ready'. I'm
getting a marginally better signal level (0x3a3a), and Fifth Gear did
record OK this week, hopefully that was what the problem was, thanks for

Are you using the rpms from ATrpms? As far as I can tell, they're not
compiled with OpenGL support. If you want it, you'll need to recompile
from the srpms and pass in additional options with the --with flag (I
haven't done this myself with the rpms, so I'm not sure what the options
are). You may need to "rpm -ivh" the ...src.rpm file and check the spec
file in /usr/src/redhat/SPECS to figure out the options & syntax. I
don't think Axel documented the options in the package info (yet.
Hopefully soon...).

Hope this helps...

R5A18 hasn't been released yet. :) the current KnoppMyth version is
R5A15.1. i don't know if there are any plans for KnoppMyth to support
the XBox, but that's always a possibility. since R5A18 is at least

As far as I'm aware, this is still true. You can get them in the $2500 range,

Did you already try the sound troubleshooting page of the mythtv
documentation? Specifically, run xawtv with the sound muted and aplay
/dev/dsp. You should hear the sound with a slight delay. If you do,
then I'm afraid your problem is beyond my limited knowledge. If not,
then make sure you have line out from your tv card connected to line
in on your sound card. Then use the mixer to mute line in and set it
as the recording source.

When I had a similar problem and had tried all of the above, someone
suggested to me to run alsaconf to reset modprobe.conf. This worked
for me.

Do you have more than one display attached ?

If so, then this is what caught me. The frontend would run at the resolution
of my primary display, and not the display it was actually running on.
Somewhere there's a setting for selecting which xinerama screen to use,
change this to 0 for the primary, 1 for the secondary, etc.

Aside from the bandwidth implications, it shouldn't be that
difficult, I wouldn't think. The fastest bandwidth of standard HDTV is
1080i, which is 1920x1080x30 = 62.2Mpixels/s. At 8bits/Y, 4bits/Pb,
4bits/Pr, that's 2 bytes/pixel, or 124MBps... roughly 1 gigabit/s for the
RAW video. Pretty ugly to deal with that way.

Are they planning to do some rudimentary (or non-rudimentary like
MPEG[24]) compression on it in an FPGA or something? I would think that
NUV or RTJPEG could cut it down by 10:1 pretty easily if it could be coded
up tight enough to deal with.

Other issues that will be a problem are jitter on the sync
signals. You'll probably need to get ahold of the standards for the
signal... I believe EIA 770.2 for SDTV and EDTV, and EIA 770.3 for
tri-level sync of HDTV.

[mythtv-users] PVR-350 Decoder Waiting For Pause -- Solved

2005-05-03 Thread Andrew Kreps
I just wanted to send out an update on the PVR-350 Decoder Waited too
long for pause error I was getting when jumping around in a stream
quickly (i.e. commercial skipping or replay). I updated to ivtv
3.3.3z last night which advertised a fix for that particular error. I
turned the auto commercial skipping back on, and used it with no
lockups for a couple of hours. It's the first time I've used MythTV
the way it was intended, and I no longer have to use edit mode to skip
the commercials! I just wanted to share, because I know a few people
out there have had this problem.

FYI, as of the time of this writing, ivtv 3.3.4 has been released that
contains a fix for the decoder fix that fixed me. So, while I haven't
tried it, I'd recommend the latest version.

Iwan,

If you have ALSA installed and you can hear sound, you can use the
following commands to get more detailed info on your sound setup:

To see which rpms you have installed for ALSA:

/bin/rpm -qa |grep alsa |sort

To see which drivers/modules are currently in use:

/sbin/lsmod |grep snd

To see which version of ALSA is installed:

cat /proc/asound/version

The /proc/asound tree has much useful info about your sound devices.

To see which hardware ALSA devices are configured:

aplay -l

To see which devices and aliases you can use for sound:

aplay -L

You may need to configure ALSA OSS emulation if you are using a
capture device which needs it, otherwise, ensure your mixer settings
are suitable (can use alsamixer from the console) and give it a whirl.

[mythtv-users] Weird frontend window shifting problem after upgrading to .18

2005-05-03 Thread Matt Mencel
This started happening right after I upgraded to .18 this weekend. I did an
'apt-get update' so it updated a lot more than just MythTV...but it's very
strange...

I'm running X across my PVR-350 to the TV screen. When first bootup the
MythTV frontend menu window is centered and normal on the TV. Go to watch
TV or one of the recorded shows, then exit back to the menu. The frontend
menu has shifted down and to the right slightly. Do this 4 or 5 times and
the frontend window is nearly half off the screen so we have to grab the
window with the mouse and drag it back to the upper left corner of the
screen.

Rinse and repeat...

Has anyone else run into this problem? Any ideas what might be causing it
or how to stop this from occurring?

Thanks,
Matt

Jim,

Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that you
will always need to use the NUV utilities to get the videos into a
format that is playable in a dvd player. I don't believe that the PVR
350 itself correctly insert VOBU's where it should, and the utilities
take care of that. The combination of nuvexport and mpeg2cut (and its
associated utilities) work quite well. The whole process of converting
a one-hour video from Myth to burning a DVD takes about 5 minutes for
me. I believe that I use MPEG2-PS as the default encoding as well.

Hope that helps!

I found some problems with snipping commercials using avidemux2's
automated functions when used in conjunction with mpeg2cut. The script
that is being used for some reason just doesn't work. I did find a
workaround in terms of script commands that would work instead.

I wrote a little perl script to generate the new avidemux2 cut script
and use it in mpeg2cut. Using this, I can cut commercials from

[mythtv-users] Just getting started

2005-05-03 Thread Pane, Chris

I am in the process of putting together a mythTV box.

I want to use a PVR350 for MPEG Decode when I playback
Movies (MPEG 3). I also want to preserver the AC3 encoded soundtrack (DTS/Dolby
Digital), and pass it through to my Receiver (For Decode).

From what I have figured out so far, I need to split the
MPEG 2 Stream first, before it gets to the MPEG Decode on the PVR 350, then
route that stream to the onboard digital audio out on my motherboard.

My question is, does myth support this? If so, any tips as
to where to start to get this to work. I am not interested in the audio out on
the PVR 350 (Since it is only 2 channels).

So in the end, I want to be able to do Movie Playback, with
AC3 Soundtrack via Myth.

Thanks

-Chris

Chris,

I think the only way to have this work (not sure though completely,
kind of a hunch) would be to use mplayer configured with ivtv output
support. This way maybe you can decode the video through the 350, and
still be able to send the audio to the SPDIF for AC3 decoding
externally.

As far as I can tell, mythtv itself, or the ivtv driver, cannot split
the streams and have one go to the 350 and the other to the soundcard.
Enabling 350 output in mythtv itself is purely for livetv and playback
of material and not for the other components like mythvideo. I think
the initial Hauppauge raison d'etre of the 350 is to decode the mpeg2
video/2-ch audio it encodes with its on-board encoder (but it also
works well with UK DVB-T which does not have 2ch audio). Having it
work in these other ways is not something supported as yet AFAIK.

What is there to document? The plugins have no build options and
mythtv's build options are quite self-explaining (or do
--without-alsa, --with-directfb etc. need more expanations???)

I'm wondering if your LCD is a Syntax Olevia? I've got one that is
1280x768, but the manual doesn't give any hints to what would be
appropriate modeline. I've not found one elsewhere. Can you share
with me your xorg.conf? or just the modeline? I've got a XP1700+
machine, pvr-500 with nvidia quadro 380xgl. Running myth 0.18 to lcd
via DVI at 800x600 or 1024x768, the playback isn't quite what my
pvr-350 can do. CNN ticker movement isn't smooth and a text a little
jagged...

or maybe I need a newer card that can help with mpeg2 decoding? not
100% sure if the quadro 380xgl does that, I used to use it for quad
buffered stereo with shutter glasses... Seems that it should be more
than enough to play the 720x480 from my pvr-xxx's... Other places to
look to optimize mythtv setup with nvidia card for SDTV? I googled
all morning, found a few threads, one 70 posts long that got
sidetracked early and not much really definitive, so I'm open to
pointers to a guide.

Would like to try to get DVI to work as should be superior to
pvr-350... and doesn't give me overscan loss of edge of desktop when
not viewing mythtv. is the consensus that the 380xgl should work, or
should I just try a FX5200, which seems overkill for SDTV? Thanks,

My recommendation is to buy at least one card now. The ATSC spec is
fixed, and if the flag rule sticks, the current cards will be the
only ones you can get (in the U.S.) that can give you the high-def
digital signal for all channels. If there are any PCI cards at all
post-flag, they'll have to be "compliant" and "robust against user
modification" -- which means not giving your general-purpose PC (a
non-compliant device) the full digital signal for flagged broadcasts.

The current cards ignore the flag and will continue to do so.
And, out of interests, how will this "Broadcast flag" affect us
Canadians (For whom the flag is not an issue). Should I still be
stockpiling HDTV cards now?
I'm not sure whether anyone will be making cards for the Canada
market. There's also a push from the U.S. to give you folks a
broadcast flag too.

But yeah, indirectly, the question was answered - mythweb is exactly

So it's going to be 2 years before you buy an HDTV? If you're a
pessimist, buy a card now and put it on a shelf. The pcHDTV card is
$170. For me, that's too much to spend on something that's just going to
be gathering dust for 2 years. If you're an optimist, figure that people
won't let something as odious as the BFlag stand for 2 years and wait
until it's struck down and better technology comes along. You never
know, the PVR software in 2 years could run best on computers without
(or with a limited number of) circa-2005 PCI slots.

I agree, that's what I would have expected out of native lirc support.

As far as I know, that's one of two major limitations in the MythTV lirc

Of course. Do something like:

 Allow from all

Satisfy any

this way all files require password except somefile.php. You can figure

The preferred method is to put access control in the main
configuration files instead of htaccess. You would only use htaccess
if you don't have access to the main files.

To do what you want, check out the Files directive.

I have plenty of schedules where one show records immediately after
the other and I get them both with no problems (both on the same
channel as well as on different channels). Are you sure that the first
show ends at 10:00pm (say) and the second begins at 10:00pm? For
example, ABC "Alias" actually starts one minute late and ends two
minutes "late", presumably to intentionally cause conflicts with shows
on other network channels ...

Yes, you can enter both positive and negative numbers in the "start

Do we have any idea of the implication of the broadcast flag for the

is it up to the individual channels and programs (and their sponsors)
to decide what programming has the BF turned on? Of course, the

Interesting question. It was my understanding that the copyright owner,
not the broadcast network themselves (unless they own the particular

Since they both sync to different sources (one is a timeserver out on

What is there to document? The plugins have no build options and
mythtv's build options are quite self-explaining (or do
--without-alsa, --with-directfb etc. need more expanations???)

This is fine for you and me, who know how to extract and look at the
spec file, but for a newbie who just wants to recompile with specific
options, I think it would be nicer for them if they could just "rpm -qpi
.src.rpm" and have the description field print out the
available --with and --without options along with a brief description of
their function. Then the user could recompile with "rpmbuild --rebuild
<--with-or-without-options> .src.rpm". That way (s)he never
has to install the rpm, nor know where the spec file resides & how to
look at it. I use it 'cause I can never remember if the packager put
the package together using "--with-alsa" or "--without-alsa", etc. And
you may set your defaults one way and another packager may set them
differently.

Matthias Saou over at FreshRPMS does this with most of his source RPMS
and I find it very useful. But its only a suggestion from a user to
take or leave as you see fit.

BTW, _shouldn't_ the plugins have build options (since the plugins
themselves do, such as OpenGL, festival, etc.)?

Re: [mythtv-users] PVR-250 - Approximately 2GB/Hr.?

2005-05-03 Thread Joe Votour
Actually, MythTV does have "canned" settings for the
recording profiles for MPEG-2. I believe that they
are 4.5Mbps minimum, 6Mbps maximum, with a 480x480
capture resolution.

The minimum and maximum values are what the sliders
(for bitrate) and the boxes (for the resolution) will
allow. On the capture resolution, it is up to 720x480
(or 576 for PAL), for the bitrate, I'm not sure, but I
think that the PVR-250 will support up to 15Mbps (I
have successfully captured this high outside of
MythTV), just using "cat /dev/video0 > test.mpg".

Are you sure that you were setting the correct
profiles? By default, the "Default" profile is used
for nearly everything, and you must set the MPEG-2
recording profiles, not the RTJPEG ones.

I have a PVR-500 (and a PVR-250), so I set my profiles
(all of them) to 720x480, but I don't recall the
bitrate. I can't remember if I'm using the default,
or if I increased the bitrate. But I definitely
changed the capture resolution.

This card looks to me to be a generic bt878 card with an FPGA in place of the
tuner to
affect the component interface. I thought about doing this.

True, the bt878 won't do HD, but the CX23883 does.

The advantage to doing this would be the ability to use existing drivers.
MythTV would
recognize it as an HD3000 that can't change channels...

Anyone want to butcher his HD3000?

This is getting way off topic. I should probably take it to the AVSForum...

Hm, I tend to think that someone who wants to rebuild from source
(what rebuilding a src.rpm is) should be able to find the specfile and
look into it. As trivial as rebuilding can be, if you start to do so,
it means you have a good reason, and that you need to check why the
standard build isn't adequate.

I don't disagree, suggestions are better backed up with patches, though ;)

Perhaps, if the aim is to still support old distros, but I don't know
whether that is wanted under mythtv. I'm more for removing
unnesseccary options, e.g. options that no user will ever sanely have
to change. At the very end this seems to be used by less than 1% of
mythtv users.

Re: [mythtv-users] component video capture cards

2005-05-03 Thread Brad Templeton

There are a number of tricks to make it possible. For example, doing
720p at 30fps or 24fps is much more manageable, and is actually perfect
for certain shot on film shows and movies.

Taking 1080i and reducing it to 1280 x 540 at 30fps is also a good first
step. The 1280 because that's the native res of many tvs today, the 540
for trivial deinterlace and cutting the load down.

Then you can try to do some rtjpeg or mjpeg to get it down small enough
to write to hard disk reliably. You would probably want to get
below 20 megabytes/second (160mbits) which seems doable with those
compressions done with some existing chips and perhaps an fpga.

Then you would expect a second pass by the computer to convert to mp4.

One Canadian company, ATI, makes an HD tuner card, but last I checked
they did not have linux drivers nor, oddly, plans to sell it in Canada.

HD broadcast adoption in Canada has been slower due to the lack of the

RE: [mythtv-users] XBOX - remotes

2005-05-03 Thread a M
Just so that I'm on the bandwagon with everyone. Buy an Xbox remote only for
the dongle and IR receiver, use the Xbox remote if you want or use another
generic remote with a "Power" and "Volume" controls compatible with RCA
universal codes.

The last question is will LIRC recognize this automatically or does it need
to be modified?

patslists at gmail could you elaborate a little on this:
"I have added additional codes beyond the xbox built-ins using LIRC and a
JP1
remote control (RadioShack 2116 from memory)."

Thanks for the input.
p.s. patslist at gmail, you don't happen to have any invites do you for
g-mail???

[mythtv-users] Third Attempt At Installing MythTV

2005-05-03 Thread Drew Tomlinson
I'm trying to build a MythTV box. I've been using FreeBSD for around 4
years but I have no experience with Linux. So my first attempt was to
build Myth on FreeBSD but there were lots of problems and eventually I
gave up. Since MythTV was written for Linux I thought I might have an
easier time just using Linux.

I started with Knoppmyth but couldn't get the CD to boot on my system.
Lurking here and seeing the success others were having with Fedora and
Jarod Wilson's guide prompted me to give that a try. But unfortunately,
I have a Promise 150 SATA controller in my system. Attached to this
card is a PATA (regular IDE) drive. However the sata_promise driver
doesn't support the PATA interface on this card. Only the SATA
interfaces.

Googling suggested that to get this support, I needed to patch the
sources with libata-devel and rebuild my own kernel. Lot's of googling
later and I've built and installed a custom kernel. Seems to boot fine
and the PATA drive is now recognized! :) But now, other packaged
modules such as the nvidia and ivtv drivers in Jarod Wilson's guide
don't work. :( I suspect this is because they were packaged for the
default kernel and not the custom one I built?

It appears I need to learn a whole lot more about Linux and how to build
what I need from source. Am I on the right track? Can anyone suggest
some good newbie guides to this stuff? I find snippets googling but
have been unable to turn up any complete guides.

Thanks,
Drew

nvidia and ivtv are very easy, nvidia just download
the version you want (probably 7174) so wget
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-7174/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run
and then as root sh
./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run
It'll do everything for you, build and install the
kernel module and the xorg driver/libs.
For ivtv just download what you need, I have a old
freestyle so I would use wget
http://www.ivtv.tv/releases/ivtv-0.2/ivtv-0.2.0-rc3j.tgz
tar xzf ivtv-0.2.0-rc3j.tgz; cd
ivtv-0.2.0-rc3j/driver; make; make install; cd
../utils; make make install
Hope this make sense, trying to get the kids ready for
bed.
I had to create some devices in /etc/udev/devices for
the nvidia stuff and had to set up an file to load
modules before mythbackend starts, basically modprobe
ivtv

I"m looking for a simple recording status light. I know a lot of work
has gone into this before but if i remember correctly it ended up as a

ever written to toggle an external light? I'm thinking scroll lock or
something but i'm not sure.Any suggestions or if someone could

[mythtv-users] Xorg over Hauppauge PVR-350 tv-out woes

2005-05-03 Thread Jason Scott Musits
Well I have ben working on getting Xorg's output through my Hauppauge
PVR-350's tv-out for quite a while now and I am VERY stuck. So I
thought I would consult the experts. The problem I am having is Xorg's
output is split into four quadrants. The upper left and right quadrants
are Xorg's output but the color is all messed up (the hue and saturation
are screwy, color is purple and green). The bottom left and right
quadrants are just blank.

First off, I will outline what I have working properly and some system
specs.

1) The PVR-350 encodes video fine.
2) MythTV works flawlessly via normal Xorg output to my monitor.
3) MythTV outputs video via the PVR-350's tv-out to a TV flawlessly.

I am running Gentoo Liux with kernel 2.6.11.

# uname -a
Linux reba 2.6.11-gentoo-r6 #1 Mon May 2 21:16:02 AST 2005 i686 Pentium
III (Coppermine) GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

# lspci
:01:09.0 Multimedia video controller: Internext Compression Inc
iTVC15 MPEG-2 Encoder (rev 01)

The PVR-350's tv-out is identified as /dev/fb0.

I am using the ivtv-0.2.0_rc3-4 ebuild (ivtv-0.2.0-rc3j) and the
mythtv-0.16 ebuild (mythtv-0.16).

Here are the relevant lines from my xorg.conf

The following register switches were recommended in another post but
they did not fix anything for me.

ivtvctl -j reg=0x6c,val=0xfa -d /dev/video16
ivtvctl -j reg=0x2d,val=0x38 -d /dev/video16

Well I think that's all I have. If anyone needs more info about
something please let me know, I'll gladly post it. Thanks in advance
for your help and I'm sorry about making such a long post.

Peace

Re: [mythtv-users] NFS Mounted Partitions and AutoExpire

2005-05-03 Thread Craig Read
Doug Heimburger wrote:
Hi:
I'm running into an interesting issue with AutoExpire that's causing
me to lose many more shows than I would have expected, including some
very recent shows.
I have two backends, with the master backend having Tuner 1 and a
second backend with Tuner 2. The second backend NFS mounts /myth from
the master backend, resulting in both machines using the same
directory to store data.
The AutoExpire is set to 10 GB. It appears that what is happening is
that AutoExpire is running on both backends, but only deleting old
things from that particular backend. Since 99% of the recordings are
made by Tuner 1, this means that things recorded by Tuner 2 are being
dropped very quickly (before I have a chance to watch them).
Some logs from Tuner 1:
2005-01-13 17:30:53 Running AutoExpire: Want 10 Gigs free but only have 9.
2005-01-13 17:30:53 AutoExpiring: The Simpsons Wed Dec 15 18:00:00
2004 1110 MBytes
Meanwhile, on Tuner 2:
2005-01-12 22:26:26 Running AutoExpire: Want 10 Gigs free but only have 9.
2005-01-12 22:26:26 AutoExpiring: 24 Mon Jan 10 20:00:00 2005 MBytes
Note that Tuner 1 is removing things that are almost a month ago, but
Tuner 2 is removing items that are less than two days old. Tragically,
this caused me to lose three of the first four hours of 24.
Is there something I can change in the configuration to cause Myth to
realize these two machines are working on a common drive, and that
thus the AutoExpire process should work across them?
Thanks.
Doug
I don't think there is a way to make Myth realize that both machines are
using a common drive. I've in fact had shows deleted when the log files
were filled up with error information. The drive ran out of space, so
Myth went deleting files on the myth partition (a totally separate
partition).

If one tuner is used more than the other (most likely tuner 1), I would
configure auto-expire on that, and not on tuner 2. Unless both tuners
are recording all the time (which your scenario indicates that's not the
case), then tuner 1 will have a much greater chance of removing the
oldest show (as it's recording more often).

Another option could be to set each one's auto-expire period
differently. ie. Tuner 1 may check at a more frequent interval than
Tuner 2 (probably in line with the proportion of how many shows they
record each). That way, you will auto-expire shows on Tuner 2 when auto
expiring on Tuner 1 doesn't free up the required space (which could
happen over time if Tuner 1 is always doing the expiring).

Re: [mythtv-users] updated nsmn tv_grab_au

2005-05-03 Thread Michael Smith
G'day Aussies,
Well, I've finally got my mythbox up and running and found all sorts of
issues with the NMSN tv_grab_au script I posted last month. Attached is
a comprehensive update, which can also be downloaded here:

In brief, features/changes include:
(*) multiple service options; e.g. download a list of chosen channels
from both free-to-air for your region and foxtel/optus listings.
(*) Configuration files for limiting details pages to just a set of
particular channels/titles (specified by a list of strings/regexps like
"Doctor Who", "Simpsons", "S.*T.*N.*G") or everything except for some
list of channels/titles (e.g., "News", "Danoz", "Shopping",
"news.sbs.com.au"). See comments at top of script.
(*) Improved start/stop time processing - I get no errors/conflicts due
to programs crossing midnight anymore (there were serious problems here,
hopefully now fully resolved).
(*) Retries for page requests added again and better error handling in
case of failures (continue to grab data rather than just die).
This one is working flawlessly (AFAIK) in my mythbox (I only download 7
guide pages and 14 details pages per clean run which takes about 1
minute). I'll start thinking about caching fixed details for generic
programs (news, etc).
Cheers,
Michael.

Jason,

Assuming the ivtv and ivtv-fb modules are loading properly, try the
following (from my known working xorg.conf for ivtv 0.2.0-rc3f) and
see if anything improves:

Amend the Device section in xorg.conf to the following:

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Haupauge PVR-350"
   Driver "ivtvdev"
   Option "fbdev" "/dev/fb0"
   BusID "1:9:0"
EndSection

and your Screen section to the following:

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "Haupauge Screen"
   Device "Haupauge PVR-350"
   Monitor "Television"
   DefaultDepth24
   Subsection "Display"
   Depth 24
   FbBpp 32
   Modes "720x480"
   EndSubsection
EndSection

I'm sure the ivtvdev driver need to be setup for 24bit colour, and
that the options of the ivtv driver are fbdev, and not ivtvdev in this
version.

Please also post the relevant /var/log/Xorg.0.log and
/var/log/messages sections to see where the card is failing to
initialise properly. (in message, there is an obvious ivtv
initialisation log)

[mythtv-users] Someone PLEASE help. No OpenGL Transistions in Mythgallery

2005-05-03 Thread Chad Delatte
Alright, I still have nothing. reinstalled
mythplugins, verified all nvidia files and nvidia
related opengl libraries where there and the proper
version. Is this another one of those things that is
just suppose to work? I think i have a wrong file
version somewhere. Also, now after running ldconfig
Gears doesn't even make it to a black screen. It's
kinda sorta half of my left over myth screen and half
of the gears blank screen. I also changed color depth
so that may be causing it. I'm running at 800x600.
WHat does this depend on me having to make this work?
I also verified that glx was loading and my agp driver
is working.

Has anyone in ACT been able to skip commercials when recording shows?
I have the skip commercials switch turned on, but all my recordings include

[mythtv-users] weird skipping and pixelation on xbox

2005-05-03 Thread Stephen Atkins
Hello all. I upgraded my xbox and my AMD2500+ (512 megs, 120 gig HD, 100mb
network, tcpid nfs, kernel 2.4.25 for sata support and a PVR-250 and 150mce) to
version .17 a couple of weeks ago. What happens is when I'm playing back an
hour or longer show on the xbox at around the 45 to 50 min mark if I use the
jump forward or back it seems to get confused as to where it is in the stream.
If I leave it along it works fine. It doesn't happen on 30 min show. I'm just
wondering if anyone else has had this problem and would an upgrade to .18 solve
it? I will probably upgrade this weekend anyway but I just want to know if
this is a known problem.

Chad,

Does the output of glxinfo or your X.org.log mention any OpenGL
related problems? I'd suggest trying to keep all variables constant
and changing only one at at time to see its effect on the system.
Running [EMAIL PROTECTED] should be OK. I suppose their could be a problem
with your OpenGL libraries if ldconfig stopped things from working.

Also, you could post your xorg.conf in case fellow NV users spot
something amiss in it.

Can't offer much else, but recognise the pain.
