I'm NOT a distro hater. I'm a hater of people who suggest that switching distributions will magically make everything better (okay, and maybe a slight bit more hateful when the suggestion is Gentoo). If you're very close, there's probably a lot less work to do if you stick with whatever distribution you're using. If a Gentoo user was extremely close to having a completely working system, i.e., *exactly* like the case you present, I would NOT suggest switching to FC just to try to fix that. About all you need is an appropriate kernel and kernel modules and you're there, so why reinstall everything on a mostly functional system? I myself have been running Gentoo/Myth for a little while now. Initially, I was impressed with the ease of install of Myth on Gentoo (I'd tried FC before Gentoo, but there was some issue with AMD64 and apt-get). Yes, apt doesn't work on multiarch (i386/x86_64 mix) systems like FC unless you remove ALL the i386 bits. You have to use yum or smart instead. Known issue. I'm running on a RHEL4 x86_64 box now without any problems, just used yum instead (well, and up2date w/an RHN account...). Now, however, I am unhappy with Gentoo. I have been trying for weeks to upgrade my kernel so that I can use my new pchdtv3000 card - with no luck. Piece o' cake. :-) So, here's the challenge (all distros welcome). Get my already-working-but-can't-move-forward machine working. I want something like apt-get or ebuilds for the majority of my needs (I don't mind building cvs where it makes sense). I want my pvr350 to continue working, my pchdtv3000 to start. I'd like to leverage my cpu's 63-bit arch, where possible. Stay with Gentoo, you're way too close to nuke it. I have tried SuSE 9.1/9.2, FC3 and Gentoo and only Gentoo has worked (this system is working, I just can't seem to upgrade it!!!). No Debian? :-) Again, all distros welecome - who's up to the task? If I had the time, I would shell into your Gentoo install right now and hook you up. :-) Seriously, all you need to do is start with a clean kernel, patch the latest DVB code in on top of it, enable it, build it, and you're pretty much there. Previous setup was running 2 instances of LIRC - the i2c driver for Hauppauge PVR card, and lirc_serial for a transmitter to control a cable TV box. I have now (finally and after much despair thinking it would never work!) soldered up a combined serial port receiver/transmitter, and wish to control both of these devices on one serial port (my system only has one). However, after releasing the serial port via setserial, I can modprobe one of the drivers, but as soon as I try and modprobe the second, it (unsurprisingly) tells me the port is in use, and the modprobe fails. What I am after is the magic config line(s) to make them both play together. Both instances have different major-numbers, and both load fine on their own, and the devices are detected. Getting them both the work on the same port is causing me nightmares! The LIRC docs say it will work as long as different major numbers are used, but nothing about the COM port setup. Anyone have a good plan / source / suggestion for a good IR extender? (Application: Frontend not in bedroom, TV and IR reciever in bedroom. I've tried several of the integrated video/audio/IR senders with the same result. I get great video (have a sub 2gig product, a 2.4gig product, and a 5.8ghz product), but the IR lights seem to stay on solid and broadcast all kinds of noise which makes it impossible to use a remote. Upon looking closer at the video senders, none of them send IR over the same frequency / channel as the video/audio. They all use a 2nd set of xmitters in some low band, where I still get interfered with. My house is Cat6 wired so I'm tempted to find some way to just carry the IR directly. Thoughts? What are others doing? I'd rather not spend $2-300 on some high end setup to just carry IR 75 feet. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

You can set both to the same with Use GUI size for TV playback, but from what I see you can't set explicit values for both. If you untick the 'use gui size for tv playback' then tv will be full screen, based on what your current video mode is. Unless you've got rid of your G550 already, then presumably you are running in 720x480 resolution and you'll get the effect you want. That's how I do it with mine (but for PAL). Alternatively, on the page after the one with that option there's 'Separate video modes for GUI TV playback'. If you tick that you get lots of whizzy options for controlling video mode based on video input. It does however need XRandR, and is a no go on the G550 tv-out (which is a shame). Apparently the 1920x1088 mode is decoded fine, while the 1920x1080 doesn't. Interesting that you have a video that's 1080 lines high. Here in the US all the 1080i content that we have is actually 1088 lines, with the bottom 8 lines defined to be blank. MythTV actually has special code that sets the output to 1080 lines if it is given a 1088-line video, to avoid a black band at the bottom, and avoid scaling when outputting to a 1080-line display. The macroblocks in the ATSC MPEG stream are 16 pixels high, which is an integer divisor of 1088 but not 1080. A 1080-line video would imply that the macroblocks are 8 (or 4; unlikely) pixels high. I can see this breaking a decoder or being beyond the capability of some system. As far as I can see from other discussions about the ProSieben HD stream, it's really 1088 high, so the macro-blocks are 16 pixels, but it seems to tell the resolution is 1920x1080. Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Re: Re: VGA to Component on WEGA
You can conceivably get the component to work, but it doesn't buy you a whole lot for 480i. Basically, you'll get potentially *slightly* more luminance resolution. The chroma is the real benefit to component over s-vid. That just means you can do more vivid colors, and have higher spatial color resolution. It's measurably better, but probably not WOW-factor better. I am just looking for *any* solution. It doesn't have to be component, but the S-Video output on my card is completely unacceptable so I do not consider it an option. OK. I guess I could clarify that. *GOOD* S-vid isn't that much worse than component. Unfortunately, many of the cards with tvout have such sucky quality that it's unusable. The homebrew hardware I built to do s-vid from VGA gives results essentially the same as the component adapter... just modulated as NTSC. [mythtv-users] stuttering playback with MythTV EPIA-M/networked
Hi, I am trying to use MythTV in a configuration where the backend is running on a central media server and playback goes via network on mythfrontend running on an VIA EPIA based box. Unfortunately playback on the VIA based box is stuttering, thus it plays well for half a second or so, then stops for 1/3 second (video and sound), then plays for another half a second, stutters again ... Don't take 0.5 second and 1/3 second for exact figures ... What I have already thought about: - Problems on the capturing side: I can watch TV on the media server without any problems, so the backend side does not seem to be the problem. - Performance problems / failing MPEG hardware decoder (XvMC) I think this is not the problem since I have another box (Pentium III/700 without any hardware accelerated video) - when I try to watch TV on this second box I just get a very poor framerate all over the time but no stuttering like described. So I assume XvMC is basically online since without XvMC playback would rather resemble that of the other slow box. - network problems In order to make sure network is not the problem I tried various ring buffer sizes ... and I even tried starting TV, unplug the network and see what happens: It keeps playing *and*stuttering* for another few seconds (buffer) and then stops. So it seems that the stuttering is not caused by network problems since the buffer seems to be full and the problem does not go away during playback from buffer only. - any other idea Many thanks in advance for any hints! I am happy to report that, with kernel 2.6.12-rc4 and the proper version of PAM installed and configured, there is now a way for a normal user process to gain realtime scheduling w/o having to be SUID root. Mythfrontend's current realtime scheduling capabilities are able to use this new capability. It should also allow people running FC3 to work properly, where before mythfrontend SUID root did not result in realtime priority. See http://www.steamballoon.com/wiki/Rlimits and http://lwn.net/Articles/134460/ for background. -Doug signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
Re: [mythtv-users] stuttering playback with MythTV EPIA-M/networked
Hi I have an Epia box which did something similar. The stuttering was accompanied by load of prebuffering pause messages from mythfrontend. This is what I did to correct the stuttering: 1. Run mythfrontend as root or suid mythfrontend. 2. Run mythfrontend with nice -15 or so. eg nice -n -15 mythfrontend Hope this helps. Stephen Hi, I am trying to use MythTV in a configuration where the backend is running on a central media server and playback goes via network on mythfrontend running on an VIA EPIA based box. [mythtv-users] Closed captioning support
Hi there, I hope its not presumptuous to ask can anyone provide definitive information on what hardware and driver combinations do/dont support Closed Captioning (both when streaming live TV and when watching pre recorded video)? Ive done a lot of googling on the subject, and ended up with a mishmash of sort-of-conflicting information! To kick things off, I created a matrix, with lots of unknowns, at http://www.mythtv.info/moin.cgi/CaptureCardMatrix . Ill be happy to maintain it based on whatever I learn from the list, but anyone should feel free to edit it; thats the wiki spirit! Im very much looking forward to getting my MythTV setup (0.18, ivtv 0.3.4u, pvr250) off the workbench and into the livingroom, but my ears, they dont work so good! So CC is a must here. I wouldnt mind buying a different tuner card (would love to try that pvr500 with dual tuners!), or even donating a few bucks to the coder who can make this work. I've got plenty of suggestions ;-) (Application: Frontend not in bedroom, TV and IR reciever in bedroom. Make S.O. very happy) Fairly typical issue. I had the same thing for a while. Although now I've got a frontend in a cabinet about 8' from my TV and ended up needing an IR extender. I've tried several off the shelf products, and I seem to have way too much interference to get them working. I've tried several of the integrated video/audio/IR senders with the same result. I get great video (have a sub 2gig product, a 2.4gig product, and a 5.8ghz product), but the IR lights seem to stay on solid and broadcast all kinds of noise which makes it impossible to use a remote. Is there anything special about your situation? i.e. - is your TV flat panel or plasma that is touchy to Infrared interference? Upon looking closer at the video senders, none of them send IR over the same frequency / channel as the video/audio. They all use a 2nd set of xmitters in some low band, where I still get interfered with. IR works fine over cat 5/6 without modification. Re: [mythtv-users] Jarod - Here's Your Chance (AKA - Distro Cage Match)
Now, however, I am unhappy with Gentoo. I have been trying for weeks to upgrade my kernel so that I can use my new pchdtv3000 card - with no luck. What kernel are you currently running, what kernel are you trying to upgrade to, and what problem does it have? Also - are you trying to use the TV out on the 350? If not, your problem gets a lot less difficult, as you don't need to deal with framebuffer junk So, here's the challenge (all distros welcome). I'm not so sure. I think my hardware may be causing the issue (nVidia all over the place and amd64 to boot). I'd be inclined to agree with you (not messing with a working system), except the fact of the matter is - this system can't grow. I cannot get a pchdtv3000 working b/c I can't upgrade the kernel. So, I'll put it back to you - who can make myth box work (better than it does, with more H/W) and without me having to install tons o' packages (just try catching all the mythmusic dependancies)? What requirements are there on mythmusic that you aren't meeting? I imagine they are just slight issues with use flags, and maybe the faad2 issue of the missing header file. Hi. I have a similar problem; I have an IR blaster for controlling my satellite box, and a RadioShack [Canada] (InterTan labelled) ir extender for watching satellite upstairs. It seems that the IR extender merely converts the RF in the frequency that it operates on back into IR (I'm not a radio geek -- sorry if I got this wrong).. because pointing a camera at the IR extender verifies that most of the time it is blasting out IR noise, which interferes with both my original satellite remote and the IR blaster for Myth. My 'solution' was to position the IR extender box (the part that blasts the extended signal out at the satellite receiver) in such a way that the interference is greatly dimished (pointing a webcam/camcorder at the box will show you when it is putting out IR), and using a coathanger to create a (very ugly) stand to hand the ir dongle off of about 8cm from the actual receiver, so to reduce the effect of light background noise. Works okay most of the time.. Something that -might- work for you is another sort of IR extender I saw at RadioShack [Canada; they only share a name, so you won't necessarily find the product in the States].. it somehow works by substituting one of the batteries for a small RF transmitter (+ watchbatteries), and placing an IR dongle on the IR reciever port of the device you are extending (mythbox in your case?). Both downstairs and in your bedroom the device will work via RF instead of IR, so it could work.. mine was a bit flaky though. DVB comes with kernels 2.6.12rc4 or something like that (or newer). Check the pchdtv.com website for details. V4L drivers will slowly die, but are the way to go if you have an old kernel (2.6.9 or thereabouts), but you will have to patch the kernel yourself. MythTV support for DVB is less polished than with V4L (at least in my experience) in terms of matching up the scanned channels with your zap2it account (which I guess only matters if you're in USA), etc. Does it matter if I'm also going to be using an ATI TV Wonder bt878 card? I don't know how the 9A60 does his thing, but it should work. The main caveat is getting a video card that can do: -interlaced output -low-frequency output (480i is 1/2 VGA speed) The later nvidias (440ish and up) seem to do interlacing. Have you ever heard of any signal incompatibility issues with Panasonic TVs using component inputs? I've got a Key Digital VGA-Component converter in use with a Panasonic 36PD30 (standard def). It does progressive input and I can get rock solid pictures at 576p, 576i, 480p etc but it flashes its input identifier in the corner, as if it thinks there's a problem with the signal somewhere. If I use my DVD player's component out, there's no such problem with the picture. [mythtv-users] Mythgame joystick hang and other issues
So I decided to go ahead and get mythgame up and running. I followed the MythgameHowTo at mythtv.info, and I've run into some issues. At present, I'm only trying to run xmame against one rom, and it hangs whenever I attempt to do so. I've run mythfrontend from a terminal window, and grabbed the output of the command that does not seem to be working. I'm not at the mythbox now, or I would post it, if someone thinks it might be necessary, I'll be happy to repost. Anywho, when run from cli in another terminal, it fails with an error about -joystick 4 (maybe it's -joy 4) being an invalid argument. When I run the command with -joystick 0,1, or 2, it works fine. -joystick 3 fails just as 4 does. Where can I tell mythgame to use a different joystick? Perhaps this is an issue because I don't have a joystick at all. At present, I'd be happy to be able to use the keyboard. However, I do have a couple of cheap USB gamepads, and would love to be able to use these with xmame, although I'm not sure if this is possible. From the HowTo, it looks like these can be setup for snes games. The HowTo is pretty good, but there just isn't enough there for me to understand the logistics of the thing. I haven't been able to find much other documentation, perhaps there are some READMEs in the source? I am using an M10K. I have had a series of video stuttering problems, which I have mostly worked through. The one you describe is the like first one that I had. In my case, I was still setting up, and experimenting, and had not yet set up the audio out yet. I had installed for ALSA, but my settings where still for /dev/dsp, which I got a warning about every time I started playing something. The video would pause just as you described, until I went in and changed my audio options to use ALSA, at which time both the audio worked, and that type of video stuttering stopped. Also, what type of tuner are you using? Another source of stuttering was the ivtv driver, which doesn't quite support VBI yet (sounds like it is getting very close, but definitely didn't when I was having the problem). When I ran the mythtv setup, and turned VBI to NONE for my ivtv cards, all but the slightest stuttering was gone. The only stuttering I have left happens for about 15 seconds every half hour or so. The CPU is normally 80% idle during playback, but during this time it is only 10% idle. It lasts for such a short time, and the the stuttering is so light, I haven't taken the time to really dig into the problem. [mythtv-users] mythtv newbie needs help: ATI TV-wonder and bad visual quality
hi all, I just started playing around with mythtv using my spare computer parts. I got everything working but suffer from bad visual quality. I also have an audio-related problem. I need your help. First of all, here is my setup: Asus A7S8X-MX (Sis chipset with onboard video 741GX) - Using X.org sis driver with Xv extension enabled - onboard sound is SoundMax, AC'97 driver ATI TV-wonder (BT878) - co-axial cable (TV) input - internally I used a cdrom audio cable to connect the TV-audio output to the AUX audio input of the SoundMax Suse 9.2 I'm watching/using MythTV on computer monitor. First off, I installed MythTV 0.18 using the RPMs from: http://folk.uio.no/oeysteio/apt/suse/ I proceeded with mythtv-setup, using V4L as the video source. After getting the channels setup (NTSC, us-cable), I can watch TV. However, 1) I only get black and white TV images. The on-screen caption generated by MythTV is in colour, 2) colour-aside, the quality of the image is just plain bad. A lot of noise and flickers. However, if I connect the co-axial cable to a regular TV, the images on TV is very sharp 3) I also have audio sync problem. So this weekend I'm just going to run another cat5 wire, and build a serial IR reciever, like the one here: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=1365880 I'll just keep all the components in my living room, and just run the cat5 wire down to the serial port on my frontend. Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Re: Re: Re: VGA to Component on WEGA
I have re-read my post for brain farts but haven't found any. I did *not* say/mean that component is worse than s-vid. I said that s-vid is worse than component, but not necessarily by much. What I was trying to emphasize is that the tvout of most video cards (that I've used, anyway) tends to blow chunks. The quality of the s-vid out of these cards is often much worse than broadcast *composite*. They generally suffer from horizontal, vertical, deinterlacing, and other temporal scaling artifacts and loss of resolution. If you have *good* quality s-video signal, the luminance bandwidth can be arbitrarily good, and the chroma bandwidth can be pretty decent (although still modulated on the color subcarrier). I don't know what the bandwidth filtering specs are for standard Y/C (s-vid)... maybe there aren't any. All YPbPr does for 480i over Y/C is not modulate the chroma on the subcarrier. The biggest improvement is from composite to Y/C, since the luma and chroma don't share the same spectrum and can thus be allocated a higher bandwidth and less interference with each other. -Cory On Fri, 20 May 2005, Neil wrote: OK. I have long since given up on TVOUT from video cards for quality reasons. Hi Cory, I totally disagree that component is worse than svideo. Below is the order of quality from good to best: 1. composite(1 video and LR audio channels in RCA interface) 2. s-video (looks like a PS2) 3. rgbhv 4. component(YPbPr in RCA interface) 5. dvi I think you really meant composite. It's true that s-vid is better than composite. I really can't see any difference between 3, 4 and 5. Quality of the 3 are awesome most especially in HDTV. Re: [mythtv-users] OT: NUV player for windows (MPEG4 transcoded)
I think you missed my point. There are two ways to generate mpeg4 files in Myth. You can generate them as the result of transcoding, or if you have a raw capture card (e.g., bt878), Myth can encode it directly to mpeg4. I think those are actually the same. bt878 is just a raw framegrabber, iirc, and myth transcodes it to mpeg4 as it's recording. I guess it's not technically transcoding, but I believe it's the same process that does it. The other way it can make mpeg4 is to transcode from mpeg2 (also within myth and the mythtranscode process) There is another way to get files like that, and it's using nuvexport, but that's a separate thing entirely (that one does make AVI) But what are 3ivx and dsMyth? I'm looking for a way to convert files trancoded into mpeg4 into standard .avi files without re-encoding them. 3ivx is an mpeg4 decoder for windows, and dsMyth is a filter that allows windows to read the nuv-style container. Basically in a nutshell, it allows any standard windows movie player to read an NUV file from myth (I tried WMP and bsPlayer so far, they work pretty well). I think the only way to put the movie into an avi container is to transcode it, unfortunately. I'd like to see a way to have automatic conversion to avi instead of nuv, but I don't know how important it is - most people record and watch movies in myth directly OR use nuvexport to save particular recordings to files. - Jeff ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users

Re: [mythtv-users] OT: NUV player for windows (MPEG4 transcoded)
Very nice. That does seem to work. I tried ffdshow instead of 3vix, and that works too - with any player that uses the dshow filters too. Also, it looks like vlc (http://www.videolan.org) will play the nuv files as well - I don't think it needs the 3vix/ffdshow codecs or the dsmythtv stuff. Ok, my Use flags, for some reason, lacked mythtv. When I added it and re-emerged mplayer, it works. Re: [mythtv-users] OT: NUV player for windows (MPEG4 transcoded)
On Windows, the dsMyth stuff will convert a .nuv to a .avi without trans-coding. The resulting .avi seems fine, though I've not tried it on a LARGE file. On linux, I'm still looking. Nuvexport is the closest I've found, but, as mentioned, it does seem to always want to trans-code. -- EC On Fri, 2005-05-20 at 13:53 -0400, Preston Crow wrote: On Fri, 2005-05-20 at 13:47, Jeff Simpson wrote: At one time, there was a difference between nuv files that were recorded in MPEG-4 from a capture card and nuv files that were transcoded from MPEG-2. Now they both work thanks to 3ivx and dsMyth I think you missed my point. There are two ways to generate mpeg4 files in Myth. You can generate them as the result of transcoding, or if you have a raw capture card (e.g., bt878), Myth can encode it directly to mpeg4. But what are 3ivx and dsMyth? Re: [mythtv-users] mythtv ringbuffer errors
Using Fedora Core 2. MythTV 18 I have one of these Roslyn cards as well. I have not gotten it to work with the current version of Myth. I have had some success with the tvtime. You will need the current version of the cx88 drivers + firmware for the card, extracted from the Windows drivers to get the MPEG encoder working. The endocoder outputs to /dev/video1. www.plutohome.com has a version of the cx88 blackbird drivers that are supposed to have IVTV wrappers so MythTV will have minimal support. I have not gotten them to work as yet and I don't know what cards they have tested with.. Also, there is no sound support as yet for this card. If you need more help let me know. The more people working on this card the quicker it will work with MythTV. Re: [mythtv-users] Closed captioning support
A bttv based card will pass out a VBI stream that MythTV can decode during Live TV, but it is not (AFAIK) recorded by Myth. My master slave backend contains the ATI TV Wonder PCI (which I believe has a bt878) and decodes CCs properly during both LiveTV AND in recordings as well. This means that Myth does indeed recording the CC data into the .nuv file. ___ mythtv-users mailing list mythtv-users@mythtv.org http://mythtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mythtv-users
