Please let me clarify something... I'm NOT a distro hater. I'm a hater of
people who suggest that switching distributions will magically make
everything better (okay, and maybe a slight bit more hateful when the
suggestion is Gentoo). If you're very close, there's probably a lot less work
to do if you stick with whatever distribution you're using.

If a Gentoo user was extremely close to having a completely working system,
i.e., *exactly* like the case you present, I would NOT suggest switching to
FC just to try to fix that. About all you need is an appropriate kernel and
kernel modules and you're there, so why reinstall everything on a mostly
 functional system?

  I myself have been running
Gentoo/Myth for a little while now. Initially, I was impressed with
the ease of install of Myth on Gentoo (I'd tried FC before Gentoo, but
there was some issue with AMD64 and apt-get).

Yes, apt doesn't work on multiarch (i386/x86_64 mix) systems like FC unless
you remove ALL the i386 bits. You have to use yum or smart instead. Known
issue. I'm running on a RHEL4 x86_64 box now without any problems, just used
yum instead (well, and up2date w/an RHN account...).

Now, however, I am unhappy with Gentoo. I have been trying for weeks
to upgrade my kernel so that I can use my new pchdtv3000 card - with
  no luck.

 Piece o' cake. :-)

So, here's the challenge (all distros welcome). Get my
  already-working-but-can't-move-forward machine working. I want
something like apt-get or ebuilds for the majority of my needs (I
don't mind building cvs where it makes sense). I want my pvr350 to
continue working, my pchdtv3000 to start. I'd like to leverage my
  cpu's 63-bit arch, where possible.

Stay with Gentoo, you're way too close to nuke it.

I have tried SuSE 9.1/9.2, FC3 and Gentoo and only Gentoo has worked
(this system is working, I just can't seem to upgrade it!!!).

 No Debian? :-)

Again, all distros welecome - who's up to the task?

If I had the time, I would shell into your Gentoo install right now and hook
 you up. :-)

Seriously, all you need to do is start with a clean kernel, patch the latest
DVB code in on top of it, enable it, build it, and you're pretty much there.
Works for me anyhow (across multiple distros, I run several, not just FC).

 1. Move to a newer kernel. I had some strangeness with 2.6.9 / 2.6.10
 along the way with IO (air2pc / pvr-250 / 4-drive raid5) and moving to
2.6.11 cured almost all of them.

 2. Check your IRQ's. lspci -v and check for things sharing the same
IRQ. When you're faciing an IO problem sharing can become a big issue.
This was another key for me in removing IO problems.

 3. What's the RAM clock on your machine? Is it 133 or 200? Should be

[mythtv-users] Big help request for getting 2 LIRC drivers (Rx/Tx) to share COM port

2005-05-20 Thread Nick
Previous setup was running 2 instances of LIRC - the i2c driver for
Hauppauge PVR card, and lirc_serial for a transmitter to control a
cable TV box.

I have now (finally and after much despair thinking it would never
work!) soldered up a combined serial port receiver/transmitter, and
wish to control both of these devices on one serial port (my system
only has one). However, after releasing the serial port via setserial,
I can modprobe one of the drivers, but as soon as I try and modprobe
the second, it (unsurprisingly) tells me the port is in use, and the
modprobe fails.

What I am after is the magic config line(s) to make them both play
together. Both instances have different major-numbers, and both load
fine on their own, and the devices are detected. Getting them both the
work on the same port is causing me nightmares! The LIRC docs say it
will work as long as different major numbers are used, but nothing
about the COM port setup.

Thanks to anyone who can help out here,

2005-05-20 Thread Blammo
Anyone have a good plan / source / suggestion for a good IR extender?

(Application: Frontend not in bedroom, TV and IR reciever in bedroom.
Make S.O. very happy)

I've tried several off the shelf products, and I seem to have waay too
much interference to get them working. I've tried several of the
integrated video/audio/IR senders with the same result. I get great
video (have a sub 2gig product, a 2.4gig product, and a 5.8ghz
product), but the IR lights seem to stay on solid and broadcast all
kinds of noise which makes it impossible to use a remote.

Upon looking closer at the video senders, none of them send IR over
the same frequency / channel as the video/audio. They all use a 2nd
set of xmitters in some low band, where I still get interfered with.

My house is Cat6 wired so I'm tempted to find some way to just carry
the IR directly.

Thoughts? What are others doing? I'd rather not spend $2-300 on some
high end setup to just carry IR 75 feet.

without an offset to avoid vertical scaling so that the interlacing

for TV playback, but from what I see you can't set explicit values
 for both.

If you untick the 'use gui size for tv playback' then tv will be full
screen, based on what your current video mode is. Unless you've got rid of
your G550 already, then presumably you are running in 720x480 resolution
and you'll get the effect you want. That's how I do it with mine (but for
PAL).

Alternatively, on the page after the one with that option there's
'Separate video modes for GUI TV playback'. If you tick that you get
lots of whizzy options for controlling video mode based on video input. It
does however need XRandR, and is a no go on the G550 tv-out (which is a
shame).

Cheers,

Martin.

Interesting that you have a video that's 1080 lines high. Here in the
US all the 1080i content that we have is actually 1088 lines, with the
bottom 8 lines defined to be blank. MythTV actually has special code
that sets the output to 1080 lines if it is given a 1088-line video, to
avoid a black band at the bottom, and avoid scaling when outputting to a
 1080-line display.

The macroblocks in the ATSC MPEG stream are 16 pixels high, which is an
integer divisor of 1088 but not 1080. A 1080-line video would imply
that the macroblocks are 8 (or 4; unlikely) pixels high. I can see this
breaking a decoder or being beyond the capability of some system.

As far as I can see from other discussions about the ProSieben HD stream,
it's really 1088 high, so the macro-blocks are 16 pixels, but it seems to
tell the resolution is 1920x1080. Maybe that's even more confusing.

DVB-s channels were tuned, Cable (PVR-250) channels were added

If only DVB-s channels are added, everything works perfectly, but
as soon as I add a channel to the other tuner... the added channels are
not there.

The funniest thing is that PIP works! I just cannot change channels.

I tried to press tuner source change, but nothing. The programme
guide shows all channels, but only the ones binded to the DVB-s can be
selected.

Maybe I'm missing something maybe its not me.

Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Re: Re: VGA to Component on WEGA

2005-05-20 Thread Cory Papenfuss
You can conceivably get the component to work, but it doesn't buy
you a whole lot for 480i. Basically, you'll get potentially *slightly*
more luminance resolution. The chroma is the real benefit to component
over s-vid. That just means you can do more vivid colors, and have higher
spatial color resolution. It's measurably better, but probably not
WOW-factor better.
I am just looking for *any* solution. It doesn't have to be component,
but the S-Video output on my card is completely unacceptable so I do not
consider it an option.
OK. I guess I could clarify that. *GOOD* S-vid isn't that much
worse than component. Unfortunately, many of the cards with tvout have
such sucky quality that it's unusable. The homebrew hardware I built to
do s-vid from VGA gives results essentially the same as the component
adapter... just modulated as NTSC. I have long since given up on TVOUT
from video cards for quality reasons.

[mythtv-users] stuttering playback with MythTV EPIA-M/networked

2005-05-20 Thread Thomas Aeby
Hi,

I am trying to use MythTV in a configuration where the backend is
running on a central media server and playback goes via network on
mythfrontend running on an VIA EPIA based box.

Unfortunately playback on the VIA based box is stuttering, thus it plays
well for half a second or so, then stops for 1/3 second (video and
sound), then plays for another half a second, stutters again ...

Don't take 0.5 second and 1/3 second for exact figures ...

What I have already thought about:

  - Problems on the capturing side:
I can watch TV on the media server without any problems, so the
backend side does not seem to be the problem.

  - Performance problems / failing MPEG hardware decoder (XvMC)
I think this is not the problem since I have another box (Pentium
III/700 without any hardware accelerated video) - when I try to
watch TV on this second box I just get a very poor framerate all
over the time but no stuttering like described. So I assume XvMC
is basically online since without XvMC playback would rather
resemble that of the other slow box.

  - network problems
In order to make sure network is not the problem I tried various
ring buffer sizes ... and I even tried starting TV, unplug the
network and see what happens: It keeps playing *and*stuttering*
for another few seconds (buffer) and then stops. So it seems that
the stuttering is not caused by network problems since the buffer
seems to be full and the problem does not go away during playback
from buffer only.

  - any other idea

Many thanks in advance for any hints!

Best regards,
Tom

[mythtv-users] Realtime priority and kernel RLimits patch

2005-05-20 Thread Doug Larrick
I am happy to report that, with kernel 2.6.12-rc4 and the proper version
of PAM installed and configured, there is now a way for a normal user
process to gain realtime scheduling w/o having to be SUID root.
Mythfrontend's current realtime scheduling capabilities are able to use
this new capability. It should also allow people running FC3 to work
properly, where before mythfrontend SUID root did not result in realtime
priority.

See http://www.steamballoon.com/wiki/Rlimits and
http://lwn.net/Articles/134460/ for background.

2005-05-20 Thread stan

Hi

I have an Epia box which did something similar. The stuttering was
accompanied by load of prebuffering pause messages from mythfrontend.

This is what I did to correct the stuttering:

1. Run mythfrontend as root or suid mythfrontend.
2. Run mythfrontend with nice -15 or so. eg nice -n -15 mythfrontend

Hope this helps.

[mythtv-users] Closed captioning support

2005-05-20 Thread Bryan Lockwood

Hi there,

I hope its not presumptuous to ask can anyone
provide definitive information on what hardware and driver combinations do/dont
support Closed Captioning (both when streaming live TV and when watching pre
recorded video)? Ive done a lot of googling on the subject, and ended up
with a mishmash of sort-of-conflicting information!

To kick things off, I created a matrix, with lots of
unknowns, at http://www.mythtv.info/moin.cgi/CaptureCardMatrix
. Ill be happy to maintain it based on whatever I learn from the list, but
anyone should feel free to edit it; thats the wiki spirit!

Im very much looking forward to getting my MythTV
setup (0.18, ivtv 0.3.4u, pvr250) off the workbench and into the livingroom, but
my ears, they dont work so good! So CC is a must here. I wouldnt
mind buying a different tuner card (would love to try that pvr500 with dual
tuners!), or even donating a few bucks to the coder who can make this work.
But, without this information Id be shooting in the dark.

Thanks,

Bryan Lockwood

Re: [mythtv-users] OT: IR wired extenders

2005-05-20 Thread PAUL WILLIAMSON
Blammo [EMAIL PROTECTED] 05/20/05 4:13 AM
Anyone have a good plan / source / suggestion for a good IR
extender?

Sure. I've got plenty of suggestions ;-)

(Application: Frontend not in bedroom, TV and IR reciever in
 bedroom. Make S.O. very happy)

Fairly typical issue. I had the same thing for a while. Although now
I've
got a frontend in a cabinet about 8' from my TV and ended up needing
an IR extender.

I've tried several off the shelf products, and I seem to have way
too much interference to get them working. I've tried several of
the integrated video/audio/IR senders with the same result. I get
 great video (have a sub 2gig product, a 2.4gig product, and a
5.8ghz product), but the IR lights seem to stay on solid and
broadcast all kinds of noise which makes it impossible to use a
 remote.

Is there anything special about your situation? i.e. - is your TV
flat panel or plasma that is touchy to Infrared interference?

Upon looking closer at the video senders, none of them send IR
over the same frequency / channel as the video/audio. They all
use a 2nd set of xmitters in some low band, where I still get
 interfered with.

IR works fine over cat 5/6 without modification. Just get an
IR receiver (like this one:

http://www.smarthome.com/8130br.html

The tabletop IR sensor - 8110. Black and unobtrusive.

My house is Cat6 wired so I'm tempted to find some way to
 just carry the IR directly.

Yep, that's what I do.

Re: [mythtv-users] Jarod - Here's Your Chance (AKA - Distro Cage Match)

2005-05-20 Thread Jeff Simpson
Now, however, I am unhappy with Gentoo. I have been trying for weeks
to upgrade my kernel so that I can use my new pchdtv3000 card - with
   no luck.

What kernel are you currently running, what kernel are you trying to
upgrade to, and what problem does it have?

Also - are you trying to use the TV out on the 350? If not, your
problem gets a lot less difficult, as you don't need to deal with
framebuffer junk

So, here's the challenge (all distros welcome). Get my
   already-working-but-can't-move-forward machine working. I want
something like apt-get or ebuilds for the majority of my needs (I
don't mind building cvs where it makes sense). I want my pvr350 to
continue working, my pchdtv3000 to start. I'd like to leverage my
   cpu's 63-bit arch, where possible.

I'm not so sure. I think my hardware may be causing the issue (nVidia
all over the place and amd64 to boot). I'd be inclined to agree with
you (not messing with a working system), except the fact of the matter
 is - this system can't grow. I cannot get a pchdtv3000 working b/c I
can't upgrade the kernel. So, I'll put it back to you - who can make
myth box work (better than it does, with more H/W) and without me
having to install tons o' packages (just try catching all the
 mythmusic dependancies)?

What requirements are there on mythmusic that you aren't meeting? I
imagine they are just slight issues with use flags, and maybe the
faad2 issue of the missing header file. Other than that, I think I
have 0.18-r2 working with no hitches on gentoo (not 64 bit, though)

[mythtv-users] HD-3000 - Debian modprobe.conf Equivalent?

2005-05-20 Thread Patrick Kirchner

Hello,

I'm preparing my

Ascript that
comes with the HD-3000 software adds the necessary lines tothe
modprobe.conf file, but Debian doesn't use that file.

I am
hopingthat a Debian user out there could share with me the Debian
equivalent to these lines in a normal modprobe.conf file.

install cx88-atsc

cx88-dvb /sbin/modprobe cx8800;/sbin/modprobe --ignore-install
cx88-dvbinstall btcx-risc /sbin/modprobe tuner;/sbin/modprobe
--ignore-install btcx-risc
Past experience
tells meI can't simplystick those three lines into
/etc/modprobe.d/alias and expect it to work, but maybe I'm
wrong?

I amstill
having problems wrapping my brain around the modprobe.d method and would greatly
appreciate some knowledgeable insight regarding the changes needed for HD-3000
support.

Hmh, sorry for not including all that info from the start. It's an
ME600 (256MB / CF-Card silicon disc), MythTV is 0.18.1 (on debian,

(I used binary packages from http://www.csd.uwo.ca/~mfgalizi/debian).

Ok, that's a good thing to try. I have not tried MiniMyth and KnoppMyth

pvr250) off the workbench and into the livingroom, but my ears, they don't
 work
so good! So CC is a must here.

I've filled in some of the information I know.

To answer your question, there isn't really much of anything you can
do yet to get working CC in prerecorded and live programming. (get a
VCR or DVD recorder0

A bttv based card will pass out a VBI stream that MythTV can decode
during Live TV, but it is not (AFAIK) recorded by Myth.

CC support does not entirely work in IVTV -- if it did, it would be
irrelevant whether or not Myth supports it if you have a PVR-350
because if you set IVTV to include the CC data in the MPEG datastream,
and set the decoder part to pass it back out, you can enable CC on
your TV and it will come through.

However, as I said, it still doesn't quite work and you will just get
a scrambled mess.

I would say a PVR-350 is your best bet, when (if?) IVTV gets the
closed captioning issues sorted out.

I'm extremely fond of the grey/black (with curvy underside) Hauppauge
remote -- it seems almost tailor-made for Myth. I'm not sure if you
can buy it separately..

My main problems with it is that it has buttons on it that would be
very useful, but because of the way MythTV behaves (can't map discrete
actions to buttons, only keystrokes) I can't really use all the
buttons, like, say the 'Videos' and 'Pictures' buttons, to do anything

Re: [mythtv-users] stuttering playback with MythTV EPIA-M/networked

2005-05-20 Thread Andrew Wilson
My guess is that you're doing software mpeg decode for some reason. I
got smooth playback in software by going into setup/tv/playback and
disable deinterlacing. Treat this as a diagnostic step rather than a
solution :-)

If you're getting smooth playback in this scenario, then you need to
figure out why you're not using the hw assistance. - I assume you've
enabled it in the setup!

Also, what does top report - if it's at 0% idle during playback and
there's no other processes hogging the CPU, then you're definitely not
using hw assist.

hope this helps

MiniMyth uses hardware decoding. Version 0.18.1.0rc2 uses Ivor's

supports hardware decoding both the CLE266 and CN400 based motherboards.

Hi. I have a similar problem; I have an IR blaster for controlling
my satellite box, and a RadioShack [Canada] (InterTan labelled) ir
extender for watching satellite upstairs. It seems that the IR
extender merely converts the RF in the frequency that it operates on
back into IR (I'm not a radio geek -- sorry if I got this wrong)..
because pointing a camera at the IR extender verifies that most of the
time it is blasting out IR noise, which interferes with both my
original satellite remote and the IR blaster for Myth.

My 'solution' was to position the IR extender box (the part that
blasts the extended signal out at the satellite receiver) in such a
way that the interference is greatly dimished (pointing a
webcam/camcorder at the box will show you when it is putting out IR),
and using a coathanger to create a (very ugly) stand to hand the ir
dongle off of about 8cm from the actual receiver, so to reduce the
effect of light background noise.

Works okay most of the time..

Something that -might- work for you is another sort of IR extender I
saw at RadioShack [Canada; they only share a name, so you won't
necessarily find the product in the States].. it somehow works by
substituting one of the batteries for a small RF transmitter (+
watchbatteries), and placing an IR dongle on the IR reciever port of
the device you are extending (mythbox in your case?). Both downstairs
and in your bedroom the device will work via RF instead of IR, so it
could work.. mine was a bit flaky though. (and it still interfered
with my ir blaster so it wasn't appropriate for my setup) YMMV.

DVB comes with kernels 2.6.12rc4 or something like that (or newer).
Check the pchdtv.com website for details.

V4L drivers will slowly die, but are the way to go if you have an
old kernel (2.6.9 or thereabouts), but you will have to patch the
kernel yourself.

MythTV support for DVB is less polished than with V4L (at least in my
experience) in terms of matching up the scanned channels with your
zap2it account (which I guess only matters if you're in USA), etc.

Does it matter if I'm also going to be using an ATI TV Wonder bt878

Probably, but I can't help you here; I only have HD-3000 cards in my

Most likely, yes. There could be bi-level/tri-level sync issues

bi-level. I don't know how the 9A60 does his thing, but it should
work. The main caveat is getting a video card that can do:
-interlaced output
-low-frequency output (480i is 1/2 VGA speed)

The later nvidias (440ish and up) seem to do interlacing.
Have you ever heard of any signal incompatibility issues with Panasonic

I've got a Key Digital VGA-Component converter in use with a Panasonic

signal somewhere. If I use my DVD player's component out, there's no
such problem with the picture.

I tried messing around with the polarity of the sync signals, but it

So I decided to go ahead and get mythgame up and running. I followed
the MythgameHowTo at mythtv.info, and I've run into some issues. At
present, I'm only trying to run xmame against one rom, and it hangs
whenever I attempt to do so.
I've run mythfrontend from a terminal window, and grabbed the output
of the command that does not seem to be working. I'm not at the
mythbox now, or I would post it, if someone thinks it might be
necessary, I'll be happy to repost. Anywho, when run from cli in
another terminal, it fails with an error about -joystick 4 (maybe it's
-joy 4) being an invalid argument.
When I run the command with -joystick 0,1, or 2, it works fine.
-joystick 3 fails just as 4 does.

Where can I tell mythgame to use a different joystick?

Perhaps this is an issue because I don't have a joystick at all. At
present, I'd be happy to be able to use the keyboard. However, I do
have a couple of cheap USB gamepads, and would love to be able to use
these with xmame, although I'm not sure if this is possible. From the
HowTo, it looks like these can be setup for snes games. The HowTo is
pretty good, but there just isn't enough there for me to understand
the logistics of the thing. I haven't been able to find much other
documentation, perhaps there are some READMEs in the source?

Any suggestions on detailed docs for mythgame setup?

Re: [mythtv-users] stuttering playback with MythTV EPIA-M/networked

2005-05-20 Thread Michael Carland

Hi,
I am trying to use MythTV in a configuration where the backend is
running on a central media server and playback goes via network on
mythfrontend running on an VIA EPIA based box.
Unfortunately playback on the VIA based box is stuttering, thus it
plays
well for half a second or so, then stops for 1/3 second (video and
sound), then plays for another half a second, stutters again ...
I am using an M10K. I have had a series of video stuttering problems,
which I have mostly worked through. The one you describe is the like
first one that I had.

In my case, I was still setting up, and experimenting, and had not yet
set up the audio out yet. I had installed for ALSA, but my settings
where still for /dev/dsp, which I got a warning about every time I
started playing something. The video would pause just as you described,
until I went in and changed my audio options to use ALSA, at which time
both the audio worked, and that type of video stuttering stopped.

Also, what type of tuner are you using? Another source of stuttering
was the ivtv driver, which doesn't quite support VBI yet (sounds like
it is getting very close, but definitely didn't when I was having the
problem). When I ran the mythtv setup, and turned VBI to NONE for my
ivtv cards, all but the slightest stuttering was gone.

The only stuttering I have left happens for about 15 seconds every half
hour or so. The CPU is normally 80% idle during playback, but during
this time it is only 10% idle. It lasts for such a short time, and the
the stuttering is so light, I haven't taken the time to really dig into
the problem.

Hope that's what you're running into, it's an easy fix.

[mythtv-users] Cutlist to ProjectX format?

2005-05-20 Thread Jonathan Markevich
There was a lot of talk about using ProjectX a while back, and I am
pleased with the way it is working. THe only thing missing, is to get
it to use the Myth cutlists. I guess the basis is that I don't
understand what units the cutlists are stored in...

In any case, I did this, with lots of bash man checking (I'm a newb to
bash scripting, please point me in the right direction if there's a
better what to do this):

---
#!/bin/sh

infile=$1
mysqluser='mythtv'
mysqlpass='mythtv'

# I want to use pretty links, so...
if [ -L $infile ]; then
infile=$( basename $( readlink $1 ))
fi

# Strip stuff out of the filename
channel=$( echo $infile | cut --delimiter=_ -f 1 )
starttime=$( echo $infile | cut --delimiter=_ -f 2 )
endtime=$( echo $infile | cut --delimiter=_ -f 3 | cut --delimiter=_
-f 1 | cut --delimiter=. -f 1 )

#echo (0) use BytePos. for cuts cutlist.txt
#echo (1) use GOP number for cuts cutlist.txt
echo (2) use Frame number for cuts cutlist.txt
#echo (3) use PTS for cuts cutlist.txt
#echo (4) use Timecode for cuts cutlist.txt

mysql -u$mysqluser -p$mysqlpass mythconverg -s -B --exec select
IFNULL(recorded.cutlist,'') from recorded where recorded.chanid=$channel
and recorded.starttime=$starttime and recorded.endtime=$endtime;
cutlist.txt

sed -e s/\\\n/\n/g cutlist.txt | sed -e s/ - /\n/ cutlist2.txt
---

Now if I load that cutlist into ProjectX, it really doesn't look right
(everything is red/cut out). I'm running through a project right now to
make sure...

Is anyone doing this already?

Thanks.

OK. I guess I could clarify that. *GOOD* S-vid isn't that much
worse than component. Unfortunately, many of the cards with tvout have
such sucky quality that it's unusable. The homebrew hardware I built to

Hi Cory,

I totally disagree that component is worse than svideo. Below is the order
of quality from good to best:

1. composite(1 video and LR audio channels in RCA interface)
2. s-video (looks like a PS2)
3. rgbhv
4. component(YPbPr in RCA interface)
5. dvi

I think you really meant composite. It's true that s-vid is better than
composite. I really can't see any difference between 3, 4 and 5. Quality of
the 3 are awesome most especially in HDTV.

[mythtv-users] mythtv newbie needs help: ATI TV-wonder and bad visual quality

2005-05-20 Thread Elvis Chen
hi all,
I just started playing around with mythtv using my spare computer parts. I
got everything working but suffer from bad visual quality. I also have an
audio-related problem. I need your help.

First of all, here is my setup:
Asus A7S8X-MX (Sis chipset with onboard video 741GX)
- Using X.org sis driver with Xv extension enabled
- onboard sound is SoundMax, AC'97 driver
ATI TV-wonder (BT878)
- co-axial cable (TV) input
- internally I used a cdrom audio cable to connect the TV-audio output
to
the AUX audio input of the SoundMax
Suse 9.2
I'm watching/using MythTV on computer monitor.

First off, I installed MythTV 0.18 using the RPMs from:
http://folk.uio.no/oeysteio/apt/suse/
I proceeded with mythtv-setup, using V4L as the video source. After getting
the channels setup (NTSC, us-cable), I can watch TV. However,

1) I only get black and white TV images. The on-screen caption generated by
MythTV is in colour,
2) colour-aside, the quality of the image is just plain bad. A lot of noise
and flickers. However, if I connect the co-axial cable to a regular TV, the
images on TV is very sharp
3) I also have audio sync problem. I played with kmix: if I mute the aux
input and enable recording on aux channel (as the FAQ suggested), I
actually don't hear anything at all.
4) lastly, the MythTV screen is too big for my monitor: looks like it isn't
getting the screen geometry right and I lose about 1/5 of the mythtv screen.
So most of the time the buttons (say, during mythtv-setup) are not
visible.

Any help is very much appreciated. I have attached the dmesg portion
regarding bttv below.

 Hi

I've been using using MythTV for a couple of months now.
Great application!!. Thanks to all the developers and to Jarod for the
 excellent HOWTO.

I've just started trying to use MythPhone and I'm having a
 problem opening
 the audio output ALSA:digital.
 Snip of output from Mythfrontend:

SIP Registered to fwd.pulver.com for 3600s
  XMLParse::LoadTheme(): Can't open:
  /usr/share/mythtv/themes/MythCenter/phone-ui.xml
  XMLParse::LoadTheme(): Using default theme file
  Cannot open device ALSA:digital
Could not open ALSA:digital to play tone
  Cannot open device ALSA:digital

It works OK if I select the std audio device /dev/dsp (I have to use
 headphones).
Mythphone is correctly using the webcam and its internal microphone.

I using FC3, with v18.0. with audio output via onboard optical
 spdif to a
 home theatre amp.
This works well for music, live-tv, recordings and xine dvd playback etc.
I use a slightly modified version of Mike Dean's ALSA digital .asoundrc
 definition from http://www.mythtv.info/moin.cgi/DigitalSoundHowTo

 Does anyone have any ideas?

Try nuvexport --transcode, maybe it's a ffmpeg issue

Even with a wired receiver, I wouldn't say your results are guaranteed.
I have a Niles IR sensor running on some cat 5 plugged into my amp (a HK
325, which fortunately has IR in/out which kept my cost quite fairly
low). This config works great to control VCR, satellite, etc. but does
not work hardly at all to control MythTV since my IR reciever (a
USB-UIRT2) does not like the signals it gets from the IR vlaster that is
plugged into my amp's output jack.

So this weekend I'm just going to run another cat5 wire, and build a
serial IR reciever, like the one here:
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=1365880
I'll just keep all the components in my living room, and just run the
cat5 wire down to the serial port on my frontend. I think this will
hopefully work better.

This is cost effective, but not sure if that's exactly what you're
wanting to do, but at least just be aware you may/may not have good
results with even a higher end repeater network.

Re: [mythtv-users] mythtv newbie needs help: ATI TV-wonder and bad visual quality

I can't help... I can say i've had the same issues with that card under

itself works fine under windows

--John
hi all,
I just started playing around with mythtv using my spare computer
parts. I got everything working but suffer from bad visual quality.
I also have an audio-related problem. I need your help.

First of all, here is my setup:
Asus A7S8X-MX (Sis chipset with onboard video 741GX)
- Using X.org sis driver with Xv extension enabled
- onboard sound is SoundMax, AC'97 driver
ATI TV-wonder (BT878)
- co-axial cable (TV) input
- internally I used a cdrom audio cable to connect the TV-audio
output to
the AUX audio input of the SoundMax
Suse 9.2
I'm watching/using MythTV on computer monitor.

First off, I installed MythTV 0.18 using the RPMs from:
http://folk.uio.no/oeysteio/apt/suse/
I proceeded with mythtv-setup, using V4L as the video source. After
getting the channels setup (NTSC, us-cable), I can watch TV. However,

1) I only get black and white TV images. The on-screen caption
generated by MythTV is in colour,
2) colour-aside, the quality of the image is just plain bad. A lot of
noise and flickers. However, if I connect the co-axial cable to a
regular TV, the images on TV is very sharp
3) I also have audio sync problem. I played with kmix: if I mute the
aux input and enable recording on aux channel (as the FAQ
suggested), I actually don't hear anything at all.
4) lastly, the MythTV screen is too big for my monitor: looks like it
isn't getting the screen geometry right and I lose about 1/5 of the
mythtv screen. So most of the time the buttons (say, during
mythtv-setup) are not visible.

Any help is very much appreciated. I have attached the dmesg portion
regarding bttv below.

Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Re: Re: Re: VGA to Component on WEGA

2005-05-20 Thread Cory Papenfuss
I have re-read my post for brain farts but haven't found any. I
did *not* say/mean that component is worse than s-vid. I said that s-vid
is worse than component, but not necessarily by much. What I was trying
to emphasize is that the tvout of most video cards (that I've used,
anyway) tends to blow chunks. The quality of the s-vid out of these cards
is often much worse than broadcast *composite*. They generally
suffer from horizontal, vertical, deinterlacing, and other temporal
scaling artifacts and loss of resolution.

If you have *good* quality s-video signal, the luminance bandwidth
can be arbitrarily good, and the chroma bandwidth can be pretty decent
(although still modulated on the color subcarrier). I don't know what the
bandwidth filtering specs are for standard Y/C (s-vid)... maybe there
aren't any. All YPbPr does for 480i over Y/C is not modulate the chroma
on the subcarrier. The biggest improvement is from composite to Y/C,
since the luma and chroma don't share the same spectrum and can thus be
allocated a higher bandwidth and less interference with each other.

-Cory
On Fri, 20 May 2005, Neil wrote:
OK. I guess I could clarify that. *GOOD* S-vid isn't that much worse than
component. Unfortunately, many of the cards with tvout have such sucky
quality that it's unusable. The homebrew hardware I built to do s-vid from
VGA gives results essentially the same as the component adapter... just
modulated as NTSC. I have long since given up on TVOUT from video cards for
quality reasons.
Hi Cory,
I totally disagree that component is worse than svideo. Below is the order of
quality from good to best:
1. composite(1 video and LR audio channels in RCA interface)
2. s-video (looks like a PS2)
3. rgbhv
4. component(YPbPr in RCA interface)
5. dvi
I think you really meant composite. It's true that s-vid is better than
composite. I really can't see any difference between 3, 4 and 5. Quality of
the 3 are awesome most especially in HDTV.
Here is a good reference:

in Myth. You can generate them as the result of transcoding, or if you

 mpeg4.

I think those are actually the same. bt878 is just a raw framegrabber,
iirc, and myth transcodes it to mpeg4 as it's recording. I guess it's
not technically transcoding, but I believe it's the same process
that does it. The other way it can make mpeg4 is to transcode from
mpeg2 (also within myth and the mythtranscode process)

There is another way to get files like that, and it's using nuvexport,
but that's a separate thing entirely (that one does make AVI)

But what are 3ivx and dsMyth? I'm looking for a way to convert files
trancoded into mpeg4 into standard .avi files without re-encoding them.

3ivx is an mpeg4 decoder for windows, and dsMyth is a filter that
allows windows to read the nuv-style container. Basically in a
nutshell, it allows any standard windows movie player to read an NUV
file from myth (I tried WMP and bsPlayer so far, they work pretty
well). I think the only way to put the movie into an avi container is
to transcode it, unfortunately. I'd like to see a way to have
automatic conversion to avi instead of nuv, but I don't know how
important it is - most people record and watch movies in myth directly
OR use nuvexport to save particular recordings to files.

/lib/modules/2.6.11-1.14_FC3/updates/drivers/media/video/tveeprom.ko

and the same for the other three files you mention. depmod -ae but
modprobe cx88-dvb still says cx88_dvb: disagrees about version of
symbol cx22702_attach in dmesg. rebooted, try again same deal. i guess
i could go the other way and remove the updates kernel modules and see
what happens with just the v4l ones in place?

I notice I am on ivtv-0.3.4a-85.rhfc3.at, maybe that is the problem?
Or, I could build from scratch, would be straightforward to do that,
just seems drastic given the problem, since everything else works
great.

Using Fedora Core 2. MythTV 18

I have one of these Roslyn cards as well. I have not gotten it to
work with the current version of Myth. I have had some success with
the tvtime. You will need the current version of the cx88 drivers +
firmware for the card, extracted from the Windows drivers to get the
MPEG encoder working. The endocoder outputs to /dev/video1.
www.plutohome.com has a version of the cx88 blackbird drivers that are
supposed to have IVTV wrappers so MythTV will have minimal support. I
have not gotten them to work as yet and I don't know what cards they
have tested with.. Also, there is no sound support as yet for this
card.

If you need more help let me know. The more people working on this
card the quicker it will work with MythTV.

on movies... then again, I skip more often on movies, so that may not
be a helpful data point. The file was right around 2GB.

There is a script out there called findtvcardoptions.sh that you can
use. It will cycle through all the possible tuner settings for the
bt8x8-based cards and display the result using xawtv. Once you find
the one that works, it will insert the appropriate lines into your
/etc/modprobe.conf file.

Unforunately, I can't see to find the URL for the file.

Hmm, I'm running a Gentoo box on an Asus Nforce motherboard with all that stuff, Ithink.

Email me off-line and I can return my config if you like.

I would think that the best way to fix it would be to go with thelatest kernel and start debugging those problems one at a time.
I get the feeling that if you can't get them all to play nicely justin the kernel, changing the distribution won't change that - in fact,I imagine you're better off staying where you are since you can try as
many different kernel revisions/patches as you want without having toworry about finding an appropriate binary package for ivtv, sinceyou'd be compiling it anyway. - Jeff--email me if you want a gmail invite, I have some invites

On Windows, the dsMyth stuff will convert a .nuv to a .avi without
trans-coding. The resulting .avi seems fine, though I've not tried it
on a LARGE file. On linux, I'm still looking. Nuvexport is the closest
I've found, but, as mentioned, it does seem to always want to
trans-code.

Shouldn't you be able to just use:
mencoder ${FILENAME}.nuv -oac copy -ovc copy -o ${FILENAME}.avi
which copies the audio and video streams from the NuppelVideo container
into an AVI container without any transcoding.

I am a big fan of putting my TV shows on DVDs. Is there a way to have
MythTV just capture straight MPEG2 and not transcode to MPEG4? I think
MPEG2 should be good enough compression and sure would make it easier
for me to quickly author DVDs.

[mythtv-users] downres HD recording in mpeg2 and convert DD5.1 to mp3 ?

2005-05-20 Thread Mudit Wahal
Hi,

I'd like to downres the HD recording to a lower bitrate (say 4mbps)
and still keep mpeg2, and also convert from AC3 sound to mp3. I've
several episodes of Yugioh/Pokemon/etc which I'd like to keep them in
dvd like mpeg2 quality and save space at the same time.

I'll be using hauppage media mvp box as a frontend, that only
understands mpeg2 in probably mp3 sound. It cant decode AC3. And
definitely it can't process HD bit rate files.

Thanks

[mythtv-users] HD broadcast: 720p channel (ABC) -wierd green line on right side of the screen

2005-05-20 Thread Mudit Wahal
Hi,

I recorded LOST on ABC on wednesday. When I play it on my monitors, I
see a green line at the right side of the screen. I played at the
backend monitor and also on a windows box using vlc-http streaming.

The green line is present in the entire episode. Anyway to fix it ?
May be some offset/trimming while recording/playing ? Will record more
ABC HD stuff and see if its present only with 720/ABC. I think fox is
also coming in 720p, will record fox and watch that too.

Thanks

That's what it does by default if you have a card that captures in
mpeg2. The transcoding is an extra (optional) step on top of that.

[mythtv-users] New LxM services... am I missing something?

2005-05-20 Thread Josh Dalcher

I just upgraded to 0.18.1 and am using the new LxM

somehow... is this a plugin that I need to get, or it is included in
0.18.1? It appears all of my apt packages are upgraded to the newest
version, so am I missing something here?

Thanks for the help!

Nope, the mythmoviestimes plugin just hasn't been packaged yet. I'll try to
work on that early next week, if Axel doesn't beat me to it. Alternatively,
you can grab it out of cvs and try building/installing it against what you've
got, just be wary of paths...
