Re: [mythtv-users] This is dumb

2005-08-22 Thread todd Bailey
actually, after dropping the database, re-initializing it (mc.sql) and
restarting the backend, I was able to watch live tv for several minutes
before manually exiting.

I'll keep an eye on this and if(when) it happens again see if there is
any db corruption happening. I plan to make a copy of the database
tables and start comparing old versus new.

You can set LogEnabled in your database to 1 for that backend

Pretty sure it's an option that's turned off by default, and you have to
enable it via mythfrontend.

[mythtv-users] MythGame

2005-08-22 Thread Marty Ravell
I've just upgraded to ivtv 0.3.7h in an attempt to get MythGame going but
seem to be having some problems.

XMame is installed and I can launch it from the command line (output is on X
using the framebuffer of my PVR-350). Seems to run fine although the window
size is small (I'm sure there is a setting somewhere I can tweak). It gets
about 37 fps depending upon the game.

I've gone through the "Utilities/Setup -> Setup -> Media Settings -> Game
Settings" and entered in all the appropriate paths.

When I go to "Media Library -> Play Games" I can see the games that I have
in the ROMS directory (these are all zip files and I am assuming that I do
not need to unzip them).

When I try to select an actual game to play I get a brief flash of a blue
Myth 'dialog box' (sometimes with the text 'Loading Game' briefly visible
but NO game starts.

Any ideas?

Marty

Every function works on the mythweb page except backend logs. When I

idea what I could do to fix this? Is it a privellege thing, or a
misplaced file thing? I am running Fedora Core 4.

Have you actually turned ON the db logging in mythbackend?

The option was tossed in rather hurridly to mythweb, so it shows up even
if the option is disabled in mythbackend.

[mythtv-users] Double wammy - Mythweb Backend logs & Xebian XBOX Mythtv front end question

2005-08-22 Thread David Bennett
Thanks for all of your help. Thanks to everyone I now have a
functional system...
now just to iron out a few bugs:

(1) Xebian Xbox MythTV front end

This probably applies to Debian as a whole, but here goes. I want to
add a SMB share to my bootup sequence. Because of a space in the
windows directory it doesn't want to go into the fstab. I can run an
smbmount on the command line, but i would like this to be automated. I
am a linux retard and can't find something equivalent to an
autoexec.bat for linux. I have heard a lot of talk about rc.local but
Xebian has rc.directories which are full of scripts. I just need this
one smbmount command run on bootup.. any ideas? (i tried adding it to
the fluxstartup.sh but it just doesnt mount)... thanks!

(2) MythWeb backend logs

Every function works on the mythweb page except backend logs. When I
click on that I see only \\. Are logs not available viz mythweb? Any
idea what I could do to fix this? Is it a privellege thing, or a
misplaced file thing? I am running Fedora Core 4.

Finally, i dont suppose anyone has a tip for upgrading my system? i
believe i saw an apt-get update command somewhere and i will probably
look it up one of these days, but in the meantime if someone has a
command or two that should result in a failsafe upgrade, i would be
grateful.

sincerely,

Re: [mythtv-users] 350 Tv Out vs. Nvidia 5200

2005-08-22 Thread todd Bailey
I would expect the tv out quality (s-video) to be approx. the same
However the pvr-350 has hardware to encode the signal back to whatever
tv standard you have defined for it. The NV card uses software for this
process, unless you have a on-board hardware encoder for tv out.

Re: [mythtv-users] This is dumb

2005-08-22 Thread todd Bailey
Yes I know the feeling, Clueless in Seattle... Staring ME!

Yes I get to watch live tv! all 10 seconds of it.
It's almost like a buffer is getting filled or something.

a troubleshooting section suggested to recompile the exe with debugging
enabled to see more error diagnosis. Something to do another day or
later this week. C or C++ is not a programming language that I am all
the strong on so it will be another challenge to tackle.

another clue is this error

ASSERT: "i <= nodes" in /usr/lib/qt-3.3/include/qvaluelist.h (373)

which the code that reports the error reads...
.
.
.
template
Q_INLINE_TEMPLATES Q_TYPENAME QValueListPrivate::NodePtr
QValueListPrivate::at( size_type i ) const
{
Q_ASSERT( i <= nodes );
NodePtr p = node->next;
for( size_type x = 0; x < i; ++x )
p = p->next;
return p;
}
.
.
.

ON a whim I am going to drop and recreate the myth database and see if
it's something I mangaled while configuring the system.

as far as getting ivtv drivers to load, My modprobe file is very similar
to yours. I'll have to read up on the structure and how the system used
this file to gain a better understanding as to why the drivers are not
getting properly loaded at boot time.

Re: [mythtv-users] This is dumb

I have the exact same problem, with a system I'm building for my dad. I
have to force a 'depmod -a' and a 'modprobe ivtv' in /etc/rc.d/rc.local
to load the driver. I trashed the FC4 (2.6.12-1_1398_FC4) install
(sorry, I forgot to save the logs), but here's the start of the
modprobe.conf I've written for the PVR-150MCE (model 1042, tuner 47)

alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
alias tveeprom tveeprom-ivtv
alias tuner tuner-ivtv
alias msp3400 msp3400-ivtv

My modules in /lib/modules are recent (HcwMakoA.ROM and HcwFalcn.rom
symlinked to ivtv-fw-enc.bin shows version 02050032)

Without the manual load
I don't get any device created in /dev/video?
I get blank when I do "/bin/dmesg |grep Initialized"

When I load the drivers manually or through '/etc/rc.d/rc.local', I can
'cat' some video and sound, change the channel on the tuner with
'ptune-ui.pl' and change some card parameters with '/usr/bin/ivtvctl'.
But, when I try to watch some live TV in MythTV, I get channel 4 for 10
seconds; I can't change channels and I get throwned out of Live TV
because of an unspecified error.

I should say that this card was in my production box (running the most
recent Myth software from ATRpms, and 2.6.11-1_1372_FC3) until yesterday
and was running strong, day in, day out.

So, count me in as part of the clueless class of 2005 ;)

[mythtv-users] XvMC output not working

2005-08-22 Thread T.P. Reitzel
I, too, really need XvMC working. Currently, I'm using an el cheapo ATI
Wonder VE for my tuner. I know. I know. ;) I'm also using an el cheapo
PC, 1.2 GHz Celeron, with no AGP. My videocard is an nVidia GeForce FX
5200 PCI. My audio card is a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. MPlayer 1.0 pre 7
plays MPEG streams quite nicely through nVidia's libXvMCNVIDIA. The CPU
utilization hovers around 30% for a DVD through MPlayer. As far as
MythTV, I tried v 0.81.1 which didn't really work with the
aforementioned setup and XvMC. I had constant lockups. As far as SVN
pulled last night, MythTV still has constant lockups with XvMC. However,
XvMC through nVidia's libXvMCNVIDIA interface seems to actually work
now. The video stream rarely hesitates at all during playback, but the
lockups continue. I notice that the video stream plays for about a
couple of minutes before hardlocking the PC. I can see hear the audio
stream, but the PC requires a hard reboot. The process never fails. I've
tried various combinations in the Playback options for the TV Settings,
but the result is the same - lockup. Am I overlooking some setting or
are the lockups due to an incomplete implementation of XvMC in MythTv or
nVidia's driver?

Re: [mythtv-users] No video playback - LiveTV or recordings (hints pls!)

2005-08-22 Thread Andrew Codrington
Update for those hanging on the edge of their seats...

The "no video" issue was related to xorg.conf settings. Tweaked settings based
on some samples
google found for me and things improved.

Video works now, but faces are blue...
Color is fine for the X display, it's just video that's wrong - both mythtv and
mplayer have the
same color problem.

For what it's worth, I'm using an ATI RADEON 9200SE with fglrx driver
6.8.0-8.8.25-0ubuntu11.
Any recommendations towards trying GATOS driver? I have no monitor attached to
this machine, I run
X (and mythtv) on the TV-out.

Still getting complaints about ALSA support not compiled in but /dev/dsp seems
to work smoothly,
as long as I'm not using "-v all" settings for mythbackend and mythfrontend.
With the verbose
settings audio gets choppy. I'll leave that battle until I get color sorted out.

It's been so long since I've done it, and I don't have access to my

modprobe.conf (as I suggested earlier). You might want to try that,
you may not want to.
I'm done with this, since I'll be in classes/working until Thursday.

Re: [mythtv-users] one problem after another

2005-08-22 Thread todd Bailey
No problem,

this is an ongoing project of mine.

someday it will replace a windows box that I use for multimedia.
perhaps one of the problems I have is that I want it to be able to
support multiple uses. e.g. office apps, web server, email server,
database dev, other dev, and multimedia (audio and video). It's
possible that I just have too much apps installed and they are colliding
with one another.

I've done several installs and each time get closer to having a working
installation. I also take notes on what needs to be done.

Re: [mythtv-users] one problem after another

2005-08-22 Thread Erik Pettersen
I'm curious: what are your hardware specs and whatnot? Is your mythtv
client and server on the same machine (it sorta looks like it)?

Is this live tv only that does it? or can you schedule a recording and
play it back later?

It's easy to miss something in the guide.
Why don't you copy and paste a snippet of your modprobe.conf file,
IIRC, he advises placing the ivtv loading at the top of the file.

Interesting point,

I'm just following Jared Wilson's guide to installing myth.
So if there is something that needs to be done but isn't contained in
that doc then yes, the drivers for the prv-250 and/or ivtv isn't being
loaded. I am still relatively new to Linux, even though I've been using
it for several years. So sorry for any dumb questions and my
frustration on this.

Thanks for the Hint, I'll track this down and see what I come up with.

Bandaid approach?
You've never said that you're loading ivtv in your modprobe.conf file.
Maybe you're not loading it, as Isaac indicated.
The commands you are citing are the commands to manually load ivtv.

my point exactly,

I was just wondering if this is sop.

It would appear to me that one only needs to run depmod -a and modprobe
ivtv just one time to create and store the configuration.

however, I don't have any problems forcing the issue with a bandaid
approach...

I'm trying to do a mythfilldatabase and the datastream starts and a 5 to
15
seconds later the transfer stops with no further progress.
Eventually it errors with a connection timeout and restarts. This has
been
going on for a few days so I was wondering if I forgot a network setting
or
are others having similar problems getting updated listings?

I have a wonderful working MythTV Setup, Lirc is great, TV Capture is

What I want to do is send commands to MythTV from a command line,
preferably identical commands to those by Lirc………..quick google search
didn’t reveal a solution, so I thought I’d ask here.

Consider the following scenario:

Ssh into the box:

- change channel to 50

- exit

Any ideas?

I've played around with using xtrap to send keystrokes to the Myth
window, but found that it's really difficult to do much of use (other
than change channel or adjust volume--which are really only useful when
I'm in the room watching the TV) because of the prompts and the assumed
visual feedback (even for changing the channel, it's hard to tell if
you're on the right channel without seeing what's on).

For example, I have a jumppoint for Manage Videos (to add new videos),
but when I send the keystroke using xtrap, Myth will often prompt
whether I want to delete some recordings. Since I can't see the screen,
I don't know if/how many prompts there will be.

Also, I have a jumppoint for MythStream (not MythStreamTV), but if I
send the keystroke for it, I then have to send the keystroke for select
so it selects and plays the first stream listed. If I want a different
stream, I have to know how many down/right arrow keys to send.

Likewise, when I want to back out of something, I have to know how many
Escape keys to send (and this often varies depending on how I entered
the current mode--i.e. using a jumppoint means one Escape and going
through the menus may mean 3 or 4.

Probably MythWifi ( http://studwww.ugent.be/~aveys/mythwifi/ ) is the
closest thing you'll find right now.

[mythtv-users] Re: Picture size on TV

2005-08-22 Thread Brad
Answered my own question. I found an option in myth settings that
starts the picture in 16:9 Zoom mode which fills my 4:3 PAL TV o.k.

I guess this doesn't help with burning DVD's though as the initial
picture is still the same size.

has to be able to go 75 feet though walls and work all of the time. Do
you think this unit will do that?

it claims to do up to 100', but i assume thats open air. i got it to
work consistently from about 50' through a couple walls, but i didnt
test very hard at longer distances.

In my experience, the Remote Wonder is acceptable, but not an ideal
remote (although, I have to admit that I haven't given up on it--I'm
just trying to tweak it to make it ideal).

To get the best range, you should
   a) get a USB extension to get the receiver far away from your case
(metal) and electronics (interference). (A 6 -foot extension is
probably perfect, but the store only had a 10 foot extension, so that's
what I'm using--even though that may be more than the max cable length
for reliable USB connections. It seems to work fine when testing with
the remote close to the receiver.)
   b) use LIRC > 0.7.0pre5+ and specify a channel bitmask. This will
likely force you to "learn" the remote commands yourself, but it's worth
the effort.

And, although I can't confirm it, it seems that the signal is strongest
on the sides of the remote, so if I point the remote at the receiver,
it's less reliable than if I turn the remote 90 degrees.

My next test will be to try to figure out the frequency it's using (for
the channel I've specified) and create a quarter-, half-, and/or
full-wave antenna to see if that improves range/reliability.

I can sometimes use the remote from other rooms, but not too reliably.
My house has steel studs, so that might affect it. Also, I find that if
the remote is too close to my couch--which is full of metal springs and
things--it seems to "absorb" the signal. (The receiver is only about 6
feet away from the couch, but the remote works better from another room
25 feet away than it does when the remote is right next to the couch, so
I basically have to pick up the remote to make it work when I'm watching
TV.)

OK. This is what happens: Almost always the remote doesn't work, but from time

Is there any other aways of using the pvr-350 remote with other receivers?
I don't know if the problem is in the ivtv drivers (right now I'm using the

Re: [mythtv-users] Help, PVR-350 TV Out doesn't work

2005-08-22 Thread Michael T. Dean

Gera Makarov wrote:

At this stage I've only been trying to output live tv from 350 but the
intention was to run X through it. I did enable 350 hardware decoding
in mythfrontend but it didn't do anything.

Just to make sure you know what to expect--turning on "enable 350
hardware decoding" will not cause the Myth GUI to show on the PVR-350
output. Instead, it will cause recordings and LiveTV to be decoded
using the PVR-350's hardware decoder (regardless of where your Myth GUI
is shown). To get the Myth GUI on the TV, you'll have to set up X to
use the ivtv framebuffer for output. Your X config specifies the
open-source driver for an NVIDIA video card, so the GUI will not appear
on the PVR-350's output.

I was able to get sound
trhough 350 from the following test:

# /usr/bin/ivtvfbctl /dev/fb0 -noglobalalpha -localalpha
# dd if=/dev/video0 of=/dev/video16 bs=64k

but there were diagonal lines that didn't let see the picture. I can't
even get sound now (can't remember what I did to change it).

You're still seeing the framebuffer. The proper syntax for the
ivtvfbctl command is:

ivtvfbctl /dev/fb0 -globalalpha -nolocalalpha -alpha 0

Unfortunately, almost every post on the 'net gets it wrong. Usually
recommending something like:

ivtvfbctl /dev/fb0 -alpha -on -globalalpha -nolocalalpha

Interestingly enough, that command works, also, but only by "accident."
The -alpha option requires a value for alpha from 0 (transparent) to 255
(opaque) and uses the first "word" after "-alpha" That word happens to
be "-on" (which is supposed to mean "turn on the framebuffer"--a command
that's never required, so it doesn't hurt that it's ignored), but it's
not a numeric value "-alpha" expects, so "-alpha" goes with its default
of 0.

Note, also, that there's no reason to issue the ivtvfbctl command unless
you're trying to test things out without Myth. Myth issues the
appropriate commands to the PVR card to set the proper mode for the
framebuffer--however, it's possible that the framebuffer alpha could get
set wrong if you are outputting video over the PVR-350 output and puttng
the GUI on the video card (although I've never tried it to see what
happens)...

Is lircd running?

I'm running an ATI USB remote wonder on SuSE 9.3 and the Hauppauge
remote on SuSE 9.2 via a PVR-250. Both have no issues. The PVR-250 is
on my backend and I even have the new dual driver lirc running a serial
blaster to my cable box.

First of all you won't be needing the bttv drivers.

What you need is the DVB kernel drivers...

Recent 2.6 kernels (gentoo-sources) at least have the source for them
but you'll probably have to compile the kernel yourself...

Good luck!

Re: [mythtv-users] PVR-150 purchasing questions.

2005-08-22 Thread Erik Pettersen
The MCE version of the pvr150 is pretty much driver compatible with
the "retail" flavor.

Obviously you won't get a remote or IR blaster that comes with the
retail package, but you'll get RCA audio inputs as opposed to 1/8th
inch stereo mini jack and the inclusion of an FM tuner (mythtv guru's
is the pvr150MCE's FM tuner supported in linux/myth?) with the MCE
flavor (as well as the cheaper price.

Yes. They advertise NBC, CBS, ABC, USA, Comedy Central, etc as
well as premium channels like HBO, Showtime, Starz, etc. It's
not intrusive, you'd have an empty file if it did not include
the promotional information for the TV networks and stations.

There is a common misconception that if someone wants to get
listings then the evil corporations will try to take them away.
However, this misses the bigger picture that TV listings are how
the stations promote their shows and they are desperate to get
this information to you. No one asked for Data Direct. Tribune
Media Service initiated the project to offload the scraping
traffic to their websites. As a bonus, they get targeted
demographic information and a captive survey audience for free.

Re: [mythtv-users] How do I get decent quality SVideo output? (Using PVR-150 and Geforce4 MX)

2005-08-22 Thread Erik Pettersen
well granted it would be different, but you complained about what I
presume to be pixelation/blockiness type artifacts, which *could* be
your processor struggling to keep up with decoding or there could be
some horrible recording artifact from snowy analog cable.

I'm trying to eliminate possibilities to narrow down the issue. Even
if you drag the file over to another more robust machine on your
network, and play it back on a PC monitor hopefully you can
tell/verify (less the interlacing) if it exhibits the same undesirable
features you're seeing on your TV via myth.

If you do that you'll know it's not the encoding/recording.

Next, (and here you'll have to forgive me lords of the myth as I know
precious little about how mythtv handles playback or how to tweak it)
I'd close down myth front end and fire up mplayer or xine or vlc on
the 1ghz box and try the different playback options to see if it
helps.

I'm not sure what to do after you've found a combination that works for you...

I have a geforce4mx 420 in my test knoppmyth box (XP 1700) and was
playing around with playing back HD streams from the HD-3000 card
outside of mythtv. Unfortunately I'm not sure what settings worked
best for me (although increasing buffers helped alot)... because it
was like -vo xv worked in one (mplayer?) and -vo xvmc worked in the
other (xine?) but not vice versa... I picked up a geforce fx5200 to
play with as it has more robust media accelleration than the geforce4,
and want to see how that goes =) One OT question: with the 7174
nvidia drivers if you close out from X to terminal single user mode do
you get all black with green random ANSI looking blocks, or is that
just me?

Sorry for the slightly half baked advice, I think the basic approach
is right to narrow things down, but I start to lose it when you'd need
to be specific about how to adjust playback settings in mythtv/linux.
In windows world, I'd just say "install the nvidia pure video decoder
trial" and see how that goes =P

2005-08-22 Thread Lee

Oh for crying out loud think laterally...

Download a bootable win98 iso with included CD drivers...
Burn it and boot the mythbox with it...
Take the disk out and burn it again with the flash util and the flash
bin file (you may need 10MB juck file to pad out the CD)

Stick it back in the mythbox and run the flash util and reflash the bios...

My MythTV box needs the BIOS updated. This can only be done from
Windows, or a Windows 98 boot disk. My MythTV Box doesn't have a floppy
drive. (They are ugly and hold next to nothing.) So I got the win98SE
boot iso from
http://www.allbootdisks.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=42&func=selectfolder&filecatid=10

Using nothing but Linux I must modify the iso to add 2 files and then
burn. I have 1 CD-RW to do this with. I've tried for HOURS to find a
solution!!! How can this be this hard?

iso9660 filesystem is readonly, so you will need to regenerate the iso.
You can still do this step to access the files for rebuilding it. (Note
the type is iso9660 not iso)

So mount the iso, and copy all the files out of the iso into a prototype
directory where you make your changes. Something like rsync -a ./src/
./dst/ would do the trick.

(Also, if the ISO contains multiple sections (like a
bootable floppy portion which gets mapped to A:, and a
hard drive-like portion that gets mapped to somewhere
else, well, I definitely don't know how to deal with
that).

The iso is probably a floppy emulated cd. See if one of the files in the
iso is a floppy image. If you can't find it, just download a boot floppy
from one of the bootdisk sites, and place it inside the prototype
directory where you are making changes.

Then rebuild the iso:

mkisofs -b ./path_inside_cdproto_dir/bootfloppy.img \
-o bootcd.iso ./cdproto_dir/

Burn that.

try mounting the ISO using the loopback device,
something like (the directory /mnt/iso must exist

You'll need to be root to do this. After you unmount
the ISO, your changes should be in the ISO image,
ready to burn.

The only thing, is that I don't know if this preserves
the El Torito boot information. I would guess it's
part of the ISO, but I don't know how that's laid out.

(Also, if the ISO contains multiple sections (like a

[mythtv-users] Question on bttv parameters

In most of the documentation I have read, it states that you must

How do I know what my card/tuner type is?

I have a Hauppauge DVB-S card and figured that the card type must be

Related question, if I would have 2 different cards in my system, how
would I pass the different numbers to the bttv module?

Hope my questions are clear.

Ha! Ain't that a coincidence! I had to do the same thing and it was the
easiest thing. I used different instructions though:

http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/

You'll need a windows2000/xp to create a bootable iso. Don't know if that
works for you.

Then, log in as your user and test the remote using irw. If you're

or has bad permissions.

My MythTV box needs the BIOS updated. This can only be done from
Windows, or a Windows 98 boot disk. My MythTV Box doesn't have a floppy
drive. (They are ugly and hold next to nothing.) So I got the win98SE
boot iso from
http://www.allbootdisks.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=42&func=selectfolder&filecatid=10

Using nothing but Linux I must modify the iso to add 2 files and then
burn. I have 1 CD-RW to do this with. I've tried for HOURS to find a
solution!!! How can this be this hard?

Re: [mythtv-users] How do I get decent quality SVideo output? (Using PVR-150 and Geforce4 MX)

2005-08-22 Thread David Peeters
It's a 1Ghz P3.

I really have no other way to play back the file unfortunately as I
only have the single TV and the playback on a non-interlaced monitor
would look different anyways.

When I use XvMC, the OSD goes black and white and flickers badly.
Using XV picture controls only changes the contrast/hue... don't they?
I'm not sure what you mean by overlay.

What are the permissions on /dev/lircd ? Make sure all has rw
permission, or make an a group, add the user to that group, chgrp
/dev/lircd, and give the group rw permissions.

IIRC there was discussio of an option in the ivtv X driver to restrict
the 'view' onto the framebuffer display or something. This essentially
gave X a screen that was smaller than the framebuffer but fitted onto
the non-overscanned part of the display.

Try the ivtv lists.

This approach won't work with nvidia. I think Myth would need to put the
OSD into a bounding box. Of course *that* would work for both nvidia and
ivtv.
It would be nice to have an xv 'window' that was bigger than the osd
'window' so the video can extend past the visible boundary and into the
overscan whilst the osd is fully on screen.
I have the xv window/overscan set so the video touches the edges but
this leaves small black bars where there's no overscan and the
adjustment isn't as flexible as a monitor (nvidia's driver has no h/v
shift or h/v scale - just 'bigger' or 'smaller')

Hi Dave,

I was thinking along these lines quite a while ago. I
setup a server pushing the video out from the computer
to a radio-shack RF modulator (tunable, $60 for the
modulator I believe) and piped back into my RG6
distribution tree.

I did have several issues.
1. Time Warner was pushing a very noisy signal into

was around channel 84 or something like that.
don't remember the frequency). That let in my

signals
on any channel > 84.
2. Video out quality varied by TV. For some reason I

never could get it to work well, unless I rebooted
/restarted X with a TV physically connected to the
computer. Then I could swap RF modulator and TV
and everything would work. If I didn't do that
then I had a ton of problems. Also older TV's
had some issues with the signal. I swear my old
sony kept thinking it was getting B&W PAL and not
color NTSC.
3. Sound volume was really low. This was soo
annoying. I ended up trying to re-encode video
files to up the vol., but got a lot of distortion.
this was what broke my "back".
4. Used the ATI remote wonder (rf) for control.
worked great, except when the microwave was on
then I had to go through some gyrations to get
something to happen. Did have occasional issues
with sticking keys, etc... never did figure out
why.

The sound issue drove me to just dropping a front-end
in on my living room.

In your case you might be able to address the above
issues. I'd think though you'd need a seperate video
card for each "channel" you want to broadcast. You'd
also need a seperate RF modulator for each of those
channels. All in all probably fairly do-able. As
far as the remote goes, I recall reading somewhere
that
you could tell the ATI remote-wonder to work broadcast
on a different frequency. Perhaps you could setup
something like that where you change the remote to
a specific frequency to control your various channels.

Let me know if you have any questions... I helped a
buddy try a similar setup so I can dig up the part
numbers. He cheated and bought some filter from one
of
the home automation companys to filter out the cable
company noise. Not sure if he's still using it or
broke down and just went with a front-end machine.

[mythtv-users] Quickie Question

2005-08-22 Thread David Ellis

I have a wonderful working MythTV Setup, Lirc is great, TV
Capture is Great, even HDTV is great.

What I want to do is send commands to MythTV from a command
line, preferably identical commands to those by Lirc………..quick
google search didn’t reveal a solution, so I thought I’d ask here.

Consider the following scenario:

Ssh into the box:

-
change channel to 50

-
exit

Any ideas?

[mythtv-users] noob remote question

2005-08-22 Thread Robert D. Mathews
I have slogged through many how-to's and with wilsons guide and have
gotten myself a working mythtv setup. happage 150, fedora core3 etc. I
know i may be missing something in the doc's, but everything works with
the exception of the remote. this too will work so long as i am logged
in as root. Is there some way to get the frontend to start as root while
logged in as user? will i always have to be logged in as root to get
this to function?

[mythtv-users] NOVA-T Hauppauge testing to see if my card is working

2005-08-22 Thread Stephen Kitchener
Hi,

I would like to able to see if my card is working before I get into the full
mythtv install process, so I tried to install the modules as described in
various howto's and documents that I have found, but I have not been able to
get the frontend installed or get the device entries added to /dev/ or /udev
as Ithink my machine has. I am running Mandrake 10.1 and I think that it is
udev, someone will correct me I am sure..

Anyway her is what I have done,

I found on one document that I needed to have dvb-ttpci-01.fw installed
in /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware and another site said that I needed to have
dvb-fe-tda10045.fw and yet another said that I needed tda1004x.mc, so I am a
little confused as to what I need to have in /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware.

However, when I run these commands as described on
http://www.ethics-gradient.net/myth/mythdvb2.html

modprobe v4l1-compat
modprobe v4l2-common
modprobe video-buf
modprobe dvb-core
modprobe tda1004x
modprobe saa7146
modprobe saa7146_vv
modprobe ttpci-eeprom
modprobe budget
modprobe budget-ci

and look in dmesg for the results, I get half the answer expected, ie
saa7146: register extension 'budget dvb'.
PCI: Found IRQ 3 for device :00:0b.0
PCI: Sharing IRQ 3 with :00:0c.0
saa7146: found saa7146 @ mem f8bde000 (revision 1, irq 3) (0x13c2,0x1005).
DVB: registering new adapter (TT-Budget/WinTV-NOVA-T PCI).
TT-Budget/WinTV-NOVA-T PCI adapter 0 has MAC addr = 00:d0:5c:21:82:cd

However I don't get the line saying that the front end was installed or
detected.

What can I do to rectify this please ?? Am I missing modules that I need to
install ??

I am running Mandrake 10.1 with a 2.6 kernel and I am using a Hauppauge Nova-t
card that "lspci -v" gives as a result this..

00:0b.0 Multimedia controller: Philips Semiconductors SAA7146 (rev 01)
Subsystem: Technotrend Systemtechnik GmbH Technotrend-Budget /
Hauppauge WinTV-NOVA-T DVB card
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 3
Memory at ed80 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512]

I have tried to run kaffine, I realise that this isn't a kaffine list but at
least it will give me an idication of the card working or not. I reports that
if can't find the dev device, is that because the front-end isn't being
initialised ??

Any help appriciated...Any more info required, please ask.

Thanks

Not all of them. I have DirecTV and they don't provide the PPV
listings for us (even though they have them) because DTV has asked
them not to. That's not a complaint, just a clarification.

>Is there is no cost of this service?

The only cost is a survey that you have to take every three
months. I think it's a pretty good trade-off for the amount of
information we get in return.

>I have heard that Zap2it includes some kind of advertising with the

That might be the survey. If they include any advertising it's so
unobtrusive that I have never seen it.

That is true. Zap2It is free, but you have to fill out a survey, and
you can only subscribe to a 3 month service, which you must renew to
keep getting the listings. There is an alternative service available
for a fee (http://www.lxmsuite.com/). It still uses Zap2It, but it
avoids having to fill out surveys.

I don't think there is any advertising - if there is, I have no clue

[mythtv-users] OT: Bonus Cornoation Street on CBC (not in program guide)

2005-08-22 Thread Sean Healy
This is off topic, but I've seen that some of you depend on MythTV to
record Cornoation Street on CBC, so I thought I would advise.

CBC is running extra episodes this week due to their labour dispute.
Zap2It does not have the updated schedule. You need to manually
schedule the bonus episodes. The schedule is available from CBC's web
site.

It looks like they will be running episodes every day this week except
Thursday from 7pm-8pm. And on Thursday, there is a Coronation Street
special from 6:30-7pm followed by a regular episode.

The Sunday repeats are doubled to accommodate the changes.

Cheers,
Sean.

The extra header came with mine too.  I ordered it from newegg just 2
weeks ago.

The only thing the 2x150 solution offers (ignoring the IR blaster
issue.) that the 500 can't is receiving two different RF feeds.  eg:
analog cable on one, terrestrial antennae on the other.  But this is
not your need if you are talking about cable boxes.  You will certainly
want to use the extra header for the S-Video input.  (If you are
limited by a SFF design, you can Dremel the guts of the header into
your case.)

Re: [mythtv-users] Card recommendation request and cable question.

2005-08-22 Thread todd Bailey
In addition to the below items,

Another interesting approach would be to use a dedicated video port for
myth output. This could either be (s)vga, svideo, composite from a aux
port from a video card that offers multiple outputs.

I find this configuration more flexible as I can login to the primary
screen using a standard computer monitor and when desired watch tv off
of the secondary port which I have connected to a hd projector.

And with a powerful enough computer and video card(s) you can
effectively multitask.

someone please tell me the easiest way to get a viewable video signal

did you try 0.3.7g... I'm betting it is because your tuners aren't
detecting correctly. I never had these problems on Debian but somebody
I know had tried knoppmyth and had the exact same issues you are
talking about. He gave me access where I tried to build 0.3.7c and I
couldn't get it detecting the tuners right either. It seemed like
something was wrong with tveeprom.ko which didn't make much sense since
building it exactly the same way on debian vs knoppmyth produces 2
entirely different results Debian works, knoppmyth doesn't detect
tuners right with a rebuild tveeprom.ko..

And for future reference, people will be able to tell you whats wrong
quicker if you post the relivent info from 'dmesg' and post your
configurations.

Wow, thanks again to all of you who have offered so
much support.  I really am blown away by how well the O.S.S. concept
works.

I actually had a very encouraging victory this weekend.  My wife made
the mistake of going to bed early on Friday.  This means she will be
asleep when I go to bed, so "why should I go sooner versus later?"
Come 1am I had followed Todd Ignasiak's advice & URL's and got
/dev/video0 to deliver video to both mplayer and MythTV's "Watch Live
TV"

I should have went to bed then.

But, I did notice that the video seemed to be stretched wide and 25% of
the right half was out of view.  Since the instructions I was following
used ivtv 0.3.2s I decided to try 0.3.7f (the latest as of then)  I
lost all I had gained.  I was up until 5am trying to get it to work
again.  So, now I must start over with 0.3.2s to see if I can get back
where I was. Can I use symlinks for the ivtv installs?

Right now I have the following symlinks:
/lib/modules/misc/tuner.ko -> modules/2.6.11.9-chw-2/ivtv/tuner.ko
/lib/modules/ivtv-fw-enc.bin -> HcwFalcn.rom

1st, is there a problem with using either of those?  (specifically the
first one.)
2nd, I would like to symlink every file that gets installed by
/usr/src/ivtv-x/driver/make install & /usr/src/ivtv-x/driver/make
install to it's destination, so that I could easily test different
versions of the driver by only calling a "make", and then symlinking /lib/modules/... to /usr/src/ivtv-current/...
and symlinking /usr/src/ivtv-current/ to /usr/src/ivtv-x/.
Is that clear?  Can that be done?  (I'm wondering if the kernel will
follow these nested links.)  What files do I need to link? (is there a
way for me to find that out from the Makefile2.6?)

Please no RTFMing.  I did actually open the file
/usr/src/ivtv-0.3.7f/driver/Makefile2.6 and saw the following sections
"all:", "install: all", "clean:", "reload:", and "unload:". The section
"install:all" seems to "find" msp3400.ko, tuner.ko, tda9887.ko, &
tveeprom.ko in the /lib/modules/x/kernel directory and warn you of
conflicts, but I cannot find where it actually copies those files to
their destinations.

Please advise.

I'm changing the title of this thread, since I just went in a whole new
direction.

[mythtv-users] Multiple Video Out - Anyone? or Stop Asking...

2005-08-22 Thread Dave

Anyone have thoughts
on this, or am I nuts and should quit asking?

Here is my
Goal.I would like to output three different signals to a "Video
Modulator" (Down the road, more likely via baluns over Cat5e to increase the
quality). In the video modulator scenario, I would then assign a
different "unused" channel to each signal, and distribute it over the same RG6
that carries my cable TV signal.I was hoping via bluetooth or seperate
IR codes, I could control that particular channels/monitors MythTV
"session".ex. I could have a universal remote that
Aux1 would control MythTV on Channel
1 Aux2 would control MythTV on Channel 2
and Aux3 would control MythTV on Channel 3I
could then have any three TV's controlled and displaying different content
depending on the Channel Chosen and the matching Aux selected on the
remote. There would be no "client" per se as one box is distributing all
3 signals.Dave

Re: [mythtv-users] Card recommendation request and cable question.

2005-08-22 Thread Zak

You have several options for the video:
1. Get a VGA->component/composite/S-Video converter (e.g., Audio
Authority).

2. Purchase a video card with S-Video out.
3. Purchase a capture card with S-Video out (e.g., PVR-350).
4. Purchase a TV w/ DVI or VGA inputs.

For the sound, yes, you need to pass audio to your TV or stereo. You
can simply use the line-out from your sound card, or you can configure
S/PDIF if your sound card (and stereo) supports it.

Re: [mythtv-users] Happauge PVR-500 Linux Support Feedback

2005-08-22 Thread Roel Gielen

Hi

Last week I had the same question about the difference between the
500MCE and the 500 (without the MCE).
I mailed the dutch Haupauge technical support about my question (was to
lazy to search around with google).

They say, the MCE version is exactly the same as the "normal" PVR-500.
They also mentioned that a singel PVR-500 is basically the same as two
PVR 150 on one card.

Greets

If you can read dutch here is their email..

1 PCI kaart.

tuners/encoders. I noticed that in the
case of the PVR-150 there is both a "vanilla"
version and an "MCE" (for
Windows XP Media Center Edition). However, I can
only find the PVR-500 in
the MCE flavor. I will be receiving one signal from
digital cable using an
IR blaster to control the cable box and the other
signal from the basic
cable. I do PLAN on moving both to digital cable, so
if the PVR-500 does not
support dual IR blasters, that would break its
contention in my decision. My
questions are as follows:

Is the Hauppauge PVR-500 only offered as the
"PVR-500MCE"?

That appears to be the case. I figure that if
Hauppauge was selling the cards in the non-MCE
version, they likely would, because lots of people
would be interested in it. (On the other hand, it
might cut into their sales of PVR-x50 cards too).

How is the support in Linux for the PVR-500 (e.g. is
it any more difficult
running two tuners/encoders on the PVR-500 versus 2
separate PVR-150s)?

The ivtv driver sees PVR-500 as two PVR-150 cards. I
don't know about the radio though, I haven't tried it.

What is your general experience / recommendation on
the single PVR-500
versus dual PVR-150 decision?

I've never used a PVR-150, but I'm very happy with my
PVR-500. I use it along with a PVR-250 for a total of
three tuners.

Thanks for any and all help/feedback.

RE: [mythtv-users] Unable to initialize video - was working before

2005-08-22 Thread David Ellis
Your problem is with XVMC, XVMC is buggy on Athlon64 if you are using the 64
bit version of the driver. The bug has been reported to NVidia numerous
times, and we hope for a fix with the next release.

If you must use XVMC (no choice from a quality perspective), you will have
to install the 32 bit Nvidia driver and a 32 bit version of linux.

David

PS. I have the same problem, to solve I use JUST XV, with acceptable
results. No Svideo just DVI.

Subject: [mythtv-users] Unable to initialize video - was working before

Hi,

I am assembling a mythtv system on my spare time (which is not much)
made of an Athlon64 on a nForce3 chipset, two PVR-500MCE cards, one
PVR-350 and an AGP 8x Geforce 6200 card with S-Video out. I am using the
S-Video out on the nVidia card for connecting to the TV and image
quality on the TV is reasonably good when using XvMC, but not so good
without XvMC. I insist on using the Geforce for video out, as I will try
to connect it to the SCART on the back of the TV set using RGB for
better quality.

Now, my problem is that after about two months without spare time I
tried to use the system, but when I try to watch TV I get the "Unable to
initialize video" error, but it was working two months ago, why not now?
No configuration had been changed since, as the system had not been
used.

While experimenting a little to solve this issue I was able to watch TV
twice but strangelly it only happened after using the nvidia-settings
application for increasing the overscan value and then decreasing it,
but not on the same X session. The first time I run mythfrontend after
doing this got XvMC working twice, nothing I could do would get it
again, including desperate solutions like powering the system off and
then back on.

Since then I tried different versions of the nvidia kernel module, with
no results.

mythtv is version 0.18.1, nvidia kernel module versions 1.0.6629,
1.0.7676 and 1.0.7174 have been tried along with corresponding
nvidia-glx versions. The Linux distribution I am using is Gentoo.

Without XvMC I get lower resolution choppy video (unpleasant to watch),
and after a while (30 seconds is enough) the system does not respond to
the remote control or to the keyboard. I believe an Athlon 64 3000+
(Venice core) should be enough for decoding a few streams of MPEG2
video, in fact, mplayer plays a DVD in full screen with much more
quality and much less choppyness, and unfortunatelly I can only stop it
with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace when run from mythfrontend.

Another strange thing I noticed was that the overscan on the TV set was
insuficient, same setting as two months ago, but I suspect that has
probably to do with variance with temperature on the analog circuitry of
the TV set.

Any ideas on the "Unable to watch video" issue?

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the very long description.

Sergio

DVDShrink works fine under WINE (well, except for the actual reading of
