[mythtv-users] Scheduling fails after channel recreation

2005-11-16 Thread Lewis
Hi all,

The recent failure of my tv_grab_au forced an upograde to a newer version
posted to this mail group.  The channel data was different so, I deleted the
old channel info and recreated it.  tv_grab_au is working fantastically
(Thanks Guys!), but I'm no longer able to schedule recordings.
Using mythfrontend the selected settings simply aren't saved and no error
given.
the backend log states only...
2005-11-17 11:27:54.196 Reschedule requested for id 174.
2005-11-17 11:27:54.414 Scheduled 0 items in 0.2 = 0.19 match + 0.03 place

Can anyone offer some suggestions as to where to head with this?

Cheers,

This is what got me going when using the latest ffmpeg:

https://svn.forevermore.net/nuvexport/ticket/24

Basically you want to add -pix_fmt yuv420p to ffmpeg.pm wherever -f
rawvideo is passed to ffmpeg being aware that $videotype is set to -f
rawvideo and so should also be followed with -pix_fmt yuv420p.

Re: [mythtv-users] Hardware recommended?

2005-11-16 Thread Robert May
You might want to look into whether or not that board will work with
the LC-11M. First thing I notice is that it has FDD headers between
the pci slots and the edge of the card. If you're going to need to
connect to this then it might be a problem. The pci cards may block
access to the FDD headers since they sit horizontal to the board and
could extend over that space. The other thing you might want to think
about is that it uses pci express and not agp. The case comes with an
agp riser card included and a pci riser card costs about $30.

May the luck be with you,
Robert

Re: [mythtv-users] Hardware recommended?

2005-11-16 Thread Robert Denier
I'd go with an nforce chipset probably. I bought an nforce 2 board for this
purpose and it seems fine, and it is fairly low cost. Fancier and newer ones
are probably fine, but I'd avoid anything that was released in the past ~3
months if possible, unless you have solid information on its reliability in
similar situations. [Things a few months old tend to have more bugs worked
out, and may even have bios updates available.]

For capture, unless your dealing with firewire or HDTV over the air signals,
you almost certainly want to go with a hauppage card. I'd just get a PVR 150
and if you need another later you can add one then. Of course if your sure
you want two then the 500's work well apparently. (A 500 is basically two
150's on a single pci card.)

For memory 512MB is probably the best choice. More probably won't help,
although HDTV might be an exception.

I only used KnoppMyth for a day to try to figure out why my Gentoo
installation didn't work. Still, it is a good starting point.

I'm not familiar with that particular motherboard.

As regards to noise, well you need to decide if you want your backend to be
separate from your frontend(s). If so, then maybe your backend can make lots
of noise, but be put somewhere so it doesn't matter.

Your front end can be diskless and fanless if you go with something like VIA
EPIA, or probably some normal processors, with the right heat sinks. One
irritation about diskless systems is they seem to lag a bit more and are of
course more trouble to initially setup. Gigabit network based diskless
systems might be interesting. Some of the cases on logicsupply.com use power
supplies without fans, although what all those can be used with would require
some research...

Good luck. Btw I'm sure I've seen this topic several times before. If you
look around the mythtv web page there should be a link to search old messages
of this list somewhere.

An even better solution would be to do exactly what VCRs have done for
the last 10 years - the record button activates "OTR" for 30 minutes,
and each additional press adds another 30 minutes up to some maximum
value, at which it resets to 30 minutes. A different key could be used
to stop the recording, or it could be stopped using the existing menu
entries in the manage recordings or watch recordings menus.

I have a Gigabyte GA-K8N51GMF-9 motherboard; this board has a Realtek

managed to find the ALSA device driver 'package' on the Realtek site,
and got it working, I still couldn't get any sound out of Mythtv... I
had the sound device set to 'ALSA:default', and the mixer to 'default'.
I finally decided to try changing the source code in audiooutputalsa.cpp
and change the code that was specifying 'Master' to instead specify
'Front'. Lo and behold, sound now works in mythtv.

I don't know how/why the alsamixer for the snd-hda-intel device I has a
'Front' and no 'Master' control. all I know is that it doesn't work
the way it is, and my change made it work

How would I suggest to the mythtv 'development guy(s)' that this might

I've tried but I can only play /dev/video0 with mplayer,
all other devices (video16/24/32/48) result in errors.
Also, what I see in mplayer window is the last channel that
was tuned by mythfrontend (if any), and NOT what is connected
to the video composite input of the PVR350.

How do I select the input that is acquired by the PVR 350 ?
I remember thare was a handy .pl program in the ivtv directory
but it's not there any more :-(
Is there a way to do it from within myth?

> I don't mean to be snide, but why would you want to run your PS2 through

I had stated it when I opened the thread:

P.S. For those who forgot my setup and wonder why I want to
connect the PS2 to the mythbox, my mythbox has a DLP projector
connected via a 10 meters special cable to the VGA output,
and we wanted to play the games on the mega-screen :-)

The projector is located on the roof on the opposite side
of the room, so it is not possible to connect the PS2 directly
to it... it has to be done via the mythbox

You will probably have better luck on the linux-dvb list

There's also www.hd5000.com. This helped me get the right patches, etc.

2. What modules need to be compiled and loaded? I loaded everything
everything in kernel/drivers/media: v4l2-common, videodev,
v4l1-compat, lgdt330x, dvb-pll, and dvb-core.

I believe the main module that you need to load is b2c2-flexcop-pci.
It should pull in all the others.

5. In mythtv-setup, do I want to select pcHDTV DTV card or DVB DTV
capture card (v3.x)? The latter seems more promising, but I get
"Frontend ID: Could not open card #0!" Neither works.

Yes, you need to select DVB choice.

Correct, and if the device drivers aren't loaded, and the subsequent
/dev/dvb 'tree' of files, this won't work.

6. Is there a simple application that can stand in for mythtv while
I'm trying to get basic card functionality working? (I don't want to
load and configure all of KDE for such a purpose.) Really, being
able to cat mpeg2 A+V from a device file to a disk file and then
playing it with mplayer would suffice, but I'm going to have to be
able to tune the card.

Yes, you need to start with the utilities from the dvb-apps package
(www.linuxtv.org again). In particular see azap, atscscan, dvbscan and
dvbtraffic.

Your first point was probably more on-target. If the installation

Well, in my searches, I discovered that the Knoppix install had items for
some things called "mii" and "crc32" that were absent from the FC4

I'll post (the relevant portions of) my messages logs in a bit.

Your first point was probably more on-target. If the installation
kernel can't probe the hardware then that's a really good indication
that the modules don't exist. I have an Asus P4P800SE with an on-board
gigabit Marvell ethernet. It would boot knoppix and find the ethernet
no problem, but whenever I tried to install Debian it didn't find the
network card. The reason was quite simple: the Debian kernel didn't
have a Marvell module. The solution was easy: I installed from the
netinst CD but stopped the install at the point where it was about to
go to the network to apt-get the rest of the distro. I then booted
Knoppix and copied the kernel and modules onto the hard drive. After a
reboot I added the new kernel to the lilo configuration, restarted
using the new kernel and continued the installation.

via-rhine isn't exactly an oddball NIC type. There are tons of systems that
use 'em (mostly based on VIA chipsets of one sort or another). Assuming that
the hardware hasn't been connected to an Etherkiller, it should work. If it
doesn't, that would indicate a deficiency of the distro in question.

The built-in NIC in my old notebook (an HP Pavilion XF335) is the same type,
and it works just fine with Gentoo.

Yeah, VCD won't work on an iPod, I tried that. My question was more
about if there is something that needs to be compiled into ffmpeg to

fifo's are just files. What matters is what kind of data coming coming
out of the fifo, and in this case it's raw data, which should be a

RE: [mythtv-users] lirc send and receive

2005-11-16 Thread Marty Ravell
Just a quick note to say thank you to everyone who offered help getting my
lircd up and running again.

In the end I was able to create a workable lircd.conf file by editing one I
got from lirc.org. I replaced the codes with those reported to me for each
button press by mode2.

It turns out that the hardware and mode2 were working fine all along and it
was the lircd.conf that was at fault.

If anyone is in need of this lircd.conf I am more than happy to email it or
post it up on my website (just thought I'd hold off from spamming the list
with it at this stage).

Now for another crack at getting a transmitter to run as well as this
receiver.

Didn't really answer my question, but that's ok. Myth's SVN HEAD is not
guaranteed to be
working 100% of the time although we stive for that. Just because your project
does it
doesn't mean Myth has to. As has been mentioned several times before, it's a
project by
developers for developers. The fact that the public has access to the
repository
is a freebie. As developers, we try not to break SVN at all and when we do,
it's not
usually for long periods of time, but it will happen. Myth's SVN is somewhere
in
the middle between what we're working on on our own systems and what will be
released.
It leans toward release quality, but sometimes we break things to make progress.
If you want 100% (or as close to 100% as possible) working release quality
code, then
you should stick to the -fixes branch. If you're using Myth SVN, we expect you
to pay
attention a little. It's not too much to ask. Ample warning was given and
this has been
discussed on the lists since LiveTV was disabled, but there are still people
almost every
day asking if LiveTV is broken. If they didn't read the past 2 weeks worth of
posts talking
about it, why do you think they'd read a simple note somewhere else.

I've been keeping quiet (well, other than the laughing to myself) but decided
to speak up
because I think it's a bit stupid to "svn update" blindly. Myth is Myth and
everything else
is not. If you're using Myth SVN, (we) the developers expect you to pay
attention. That's
that and it isn't going to change. The commit logs and the -commits mailing
list aren't just
for the fun of it. If people can't or don't want to pay attention they should
stick to the
-fixes branch.

Anyway, that's my $0.02 and all I'm saying on the subject.

/me goes off to break some more stuff in SVN HEAD

True, I originally had change_channel.sh and change_channel2.sh in my mythtv

Its good to see that my scripts are still getting used. I just wanted to add
a note about starting the script. You do not need to call the script from
with a shell. Just put:

/usr/local/bin/MyBlaster.pl

in the script field for that capture card. If you need to use options:

/usr/local/bin/MyBlaster.pl

Mythtv will append the channel number to the end of the string and will call
the script shell itself. No need to double shell the thing. Also will give
you a noticable speed increase when changing channels.

PS - I should have time this winter to pull the learning mode code into the
origional command set and will release an update. Check sourceforge for the
latest version which is currently 1.4.1

Do you at random times go to your coworker's computers and take pieces of
code they've been working on and compile them into your programs and put that
code
into production use without asking or checking to see if there are any
unintended
side-effects in their code? That's what you're doing if you just "svn update"

Since they're distributing North American listings I would guess
the bulk of their users are in one of those time zones.

Have a look at the concurrency pictures they have posted. This seems

I missed this module. I assume it has it's own theme as well?
Multiple presses of the "6" key unlock new features and hidden menus?

i think that's also the case for me and that's not good :-( the problem is
that mythtv is used in such exotic countries like poland ;-), and we don't
have a xmltv grabber here...i think that in case there's no program listings
available mythtv should record until i press "r" again...is there any
possibility to make mythtv record like this?

[mythtv-users] Re: cannot capture audio

2005-11-16 Thread RKVJ
Yes, I made sure that the line-in is set as the
record-source and is muted. Tvtime and xawtv work
properly when I unmute the line-in. Another way I'm
able to get hear the real-time audio is increasing the
volume level on "AC97" control, with the
"capture"(which I believe is AC97 capture) also
selected as a recording source. The funny thing about
AC97 is that it continues to play even after I exit
out of mythtv !

Essestially, I'm not able to get the audio
captured/buffered. Any ideas on how to debug/fix the
problem further?

Thanks

I'm not trying to be contrary but I think you will find that irw must have
lircd running in order for it to work.

irw dumps information received on a domain socket to stdout. (According to
it's man page)

In the case of what we are trying to do it is lircd which is sending this
information to the socket.

I agree with you that using mode2 or irrecord needs lircd to be stopped. As
stated in my previous post I do not have a problem getting mode2 or irrecord
to work.

Am I being completely stupid on this point? (it is quite possible)

Am I correct in thinking that irw should return the names of the keys
pressed as they match up in the lircd.conf file?

It was my understanding that irw was not dependant on the lircrc file. Is
this a mistake I am making?

I have 3 files in this directory:

10-wacom.rules
50-udev.rules
lirc.rules

I'm assuming that the lirc.rules is the one we are talking about (you
mentioned 11-lirc.rules).

My lirc.rules contains:

KERNEL="lirc[0-9]*",   NAME="lirc%n"
KERNEL="lirc0",SYMLINK="lirc"

/dev/lirc0 is being created as I can cat it and see characters produced by
button presses (mode2 works etc).

Any ideas?

OK. But even so, this does not mean that users who wouldn't normally
use SVN are exempt from the responsibilities expected of *anyone* using
SVN--i.e. reading and keeping up with the -dev and -commits lists...

Just my $0.02.

Mike

Show me where onthe SVN page it says to read and keep up with the lists?

As well, in the documentation, while it mentions you should join the lists, it
does not say anything about how to search the lists (ie gossamer) to see what
the current state of SVN is in.

I don't know where else there is with official Myth Documentation that talks
about SVN, but I'll assume theres nothing there. Maybe a little clarification
in the documentation (but apparently NOT on the SVN page itself) should talk
about this stuff.

Steve

I think its one of those, if you are going to venture into the deep end
of the waters, you should know how to swim thingsIf your going to go
and use SVN, then you should at least know how to use it, ie know how to
read up on the changelog/commit lists/dev lists. I was never TOLD that
myself, if just makes a hell of alot of sense to me that way. If I want
to use something, esp code thats actively being developed, then Id want
to know whats going on with that code...the only way to know that is to
either talk to the dev themselves (dev list is for that) or read their
thoughts (commit list and trac for that).

Well, it's worth pointing out, of course, that whether your card works
has everything to with kernel + modules and nothing specifically to do
with the distribution.

What's bothering you, I imagine, is the success (or lack of) the
distributions have in automatically probing the card and setting it up

This is what happens if you don't have tv listings for the current

program so it just doesn't start. Fix your listings and the problem
should go away.

And the 'Recording ""' (no name in quotes) seems to indicate this is

Show me where onthe SVN page it says to read and keep up with the lists?

As well, in the documentation, while it mentions you should join the lists, it
does not say anything about how to search the lists (ie gossamer) to see what
the current state of SVN is in.

I don't know where else there is with official Myth Documentation that talks
about SVN, but I'll assume theres nothing there. Maybe a little clarification
in the documentation (but apparently NOT on the SVN page itself) should talk
about this stuff.

[mythtv-users] Play Audio/Video Backwards

2005-11-16 Thread Geoff Scott
So I watch Lost. There's a character on Lost, Walt, who has started
to talk backwards. I was wondering if Myth has a way to play the
video/audio backwards so I don't have to go surf to some fan site to
figure out what he said. I like being able to slow down the
recording, or speed it up, but reversing it would be... well, pretty
cool.

So boot into Knoppix, see what module is being used to power the network card,
grab the packages on another computer, burn the packages to a CD, install the

[mythtv-users] Configure oddity

2005-11-16 Thread R. Geoffrey Newbury
I grabbed svn 7738 of mythtv to take a look at Live Tv. It would not
configure to include lirc despite changing the defaults at the top of
the configure file, *and* including --enable-lirc in the configure call.

I traced the code to this bit, which starts at about line 1638 in the file:

*** Fragment *
#test for lirc client libraries
if test x"$lirc" = x"yes" ; then # IF IT IS NO, EXIT,
IF YES

lirc="no" # SET TO NO AND TEST
   if has_library liblirc_client.so ; then# CHANGE IT BACK IF
THE CLIENT LIBRARY EXISTS >>WHICH IT DOES

   lirc="yes"
   fi
fi

#test for lirc client header
if test x"$lirc" = x"yes" ; then#SAME AS ABOVE
  lirc="no"
cat > $TMPC << EOF

#include
int main( void ) { return 0; }
EOF
   if $cc $CFLAGS $ARCHFLAGS -o $TMPE $TMPC 2> /dev/null ; then# I
HAVE NO IDEA WAS THIS DOES! BUT IT FAILS..
   lirc="yes"
   fi

fi

*End Fragment ***

To get configure to work, I changed the 2 lirc="no" lines to lirc="yes".

I have liblirc_client.so in /usr/lib and that folder is included in
ld.so.conf.

And there is a /lirc/lirc_client.h in /usr/include

As far as I can tell, by running the code portions sequentially, it
should work

Except for the line which I cannot understand.
This is on a Via SP13000 which use the arch flag..

Anyone have any ideas?

[mythtv-users] Front end/Back end functionality

2005-11-16 Thread Doug Hall
My plan is to have a tower PC back end in my bedroom (to help counter
my wife's snoring ;-) and a front end XBox or Hauppauge MediaMVP in
the den, as the front end.

I expect that I can connect my cable TV to the back end (obviously),
and yet still control everything (including pausing live TV) from the
front end. Is this correct? Also, if I go with the XBox, what
advantages will I have over the MediaMVP? Will I, for example, be
able to decode DVDs on the XBox, and have the resulting files stored
on my back end? Is there any advantage to having the hard drive in
the XBox? For those of you using the MediaMVP as a front end, how is
that working out for you?

Thanks for all responses!

This is what happens if you don't have tv listings for the currentchannel. Myth doesn't know the finish time or name of the current

Another possibility is that your myth partition is full. Despite having

[mythtv-users] MyBlaster/Dish Network

2005-11-16 Thread Robert Denier
Overall the MyBlaster serial seems rock solid with two dish network receivers,
where the IR blaster did flaky channel changes no matter how long I messed
with it, especially when myth was doing the channel changing. [When myth is
changing the channel, there are other things going on that seem to make IR
blasters less reliable.]

I can send someone the files I'm using if someone needs them. You will need a
serial IR blaster, and one receiver set with id 1 and the other with id 2.

Note, I don't have anything particularly new, I just did a couple minor
changes to a set of perl scripts linked in a past list post.

If that is for sure a Conexant 2388x, that chipset should be supported
in the 2.6 kernel by v4l, in which case it will work in linux. No
guarantees, of course, since I don't know that anyone is using that
card with linux, or if there are any differences between the other
cards using that chipset and that one.

I got that from a google search which turned up this page:

http://www.overclockers.com.au/wiki/MythTV

"Digitalnow DNTV Live! DVB-T

Chipset: Conexant 2388x

Support: Full Support under Kernel 2.6.12+

Kernel Modules Required: cx88xx, cx88-dvb. Drivers will autodetect card type

Remote: Works under lircd 0.7.2+. Requires /dev/input support in lircd"

Keep in mind that the ONLY thing those two cards have in common is the chipset, so it may not work at all.

I still say that you should opt for a more commonly used card, just
because it will be much easier in the long run. the Hauppauge PVR-150
is as cheap as $60 online, and you'll get instant gratification, as
you'll be up and running in minutes->hours, as opposed to
days->weeks that the conexant no-name card will surely take.

About a month or two ago I had mythburn working really well. But I haven't used it for a while, and now it doesn't work!

I'm running FC3 with a DVB tuner.
I'm not sure which part is causing the problem, everything seems to work OK, with no error messages apart from:
... log snipped...
This seems similar to the problem mentioned here:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/148141

But I've followed those steps, (I discovered I did have transcode 1.0
instead of 0.6.14, so I downgraded, and it still doesn't work).

Just to say, although I thought I'd checked - it turned out to be a
permissions problem on the dvd target directory! The other errors
seemed to be suggesting it was something else that was wrong!

In modprobe.conf:

alias eth0 via-rhine

But that only works if the via-rhine module is compiled into the kernel if
I understand things correctly..
So you may need to do a yum update kernel, configure and compile the new
kernel. (well if you are doing a kernel compile you may as well be doing
it to a new kernel with lots of new drivers built in.. There's a large
difference between the 2.6.11 kernel on the FC4 iso's and the latest
2.6.14 or even 2.6.15-rc kernels.)

Does your MB's bios allow you to boot from an USB device - e.g. a pen drive?
Several of mine do. (Lucky me! c¨,) )
check out the files:
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/4/i386/os/images/README>
and
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/4/i386/os/images/diskboot.img>
What I have done with great success is to write this file to my pen drive, boot
from it and install over the 'net. Works great.

If you read the installation instructions given at lirc.org you can miss

I had no problems with irrecord. At the very least, use irrecord of see
what your remote is sending, and then look at all of the examples in the
/remotes folder. That's where I found out that the remote I was using was
NOT the one I thought it was: completely different key codes...so of
course it would not work...

sites (mainly the lirc homesite) as well as in the ivtv and lirc

on my box. No joy.

NOWHERE on the lirc.org site does it make it clear that the lircd.conf
file and the lircrc file must match in the NAMES of the keys.

So if lircd.conf calls a button "vol+" the lircrc file will not map
properly into your applications if it is referred to as "Volume-Up" (or
likely even "VOL+"

And of course, the lircd.conf must correctly map the transmitted codes to
something..

Since you got that far, I presume you have the /dev stuff figured out. I
had to make a rules file in /etc/udev/rules.d called 11-lirc.rules
with the following line in it, so that lirc would work:

KERNEL="lirc0" SYMLINK="lirc" GROUP="mythtv" MODE="0660"

This ensures that /dev/lirc0 is created, that a symlink of /dev/lirc is
created and the group and permissions are set correctly.

[mythtv-users] Re: Libmpeg and weird colors

2005-11-16 Thread Robert Lundy
I actually fixed the strange colors-somehow the hue color control was set to "0" instead of 50.

As to my issues with using libmpeg only and no xvmc-

My test backend is an Athlon XP 3200 (400mhz) on a Foxconn SiS based MB using 512mb Geil PC3200 DDR.  Video card is an Nividia 5600 AGP.  Audio is the onboard SiS stuff using the inXXX driver.  DMA is on as verified by hdparm.  Proc util w/o xvmc is about 60-80% depending on options (opengl sync on/off, use video as timebase, deinterlacing method, etc.)  Last night I almost got it consistently watchable.  720p 60fps seems to be harder to deal with than 1080i sources.  My HD card is a rev 1 (Broadcom decoder) Air2pc.  OS is FC4 with the
2.6.13-1532 kernel.  I'm using the atrpms version of myth.

My test frontend is a Sempron (socket 462) 3000 on a VIA based MB built by ASAS for compaq.  Video is an Nvidia 5200.  Audio is a MadDog Envy 24 card using the ICEXXX driver.  Everything else is the same as the master backend.  This PC is also at 60-80% proc utilization with almost acceptable playback w/o xvmc.

I'm not a complete noob, but I'm also not a Linux genius.  Something is bottnecking me-FC4, the hardware, the video card, something.  The only thing different on the laptop, other than an intel chip and ati graphics is that the kernel is the Fedora version of
2.6.14-.

I'm almost at the point I'm going to ebay all this stuff and go buy Intel.  But I haven't built an Intel based pc since a PIII-733 in 2000.  I don't even know what memory matches what chip.  I've just been an AMD person.

Any other troubleshooting tips are appreciated.  I could live with xvmc's shortcomings for a while-until something else gets fixed or figured out.

Xv is "X Video". I don't know everything it does, but the main thing
that Myth uses it for is to scale video output to your display size.
Without Xv, if you ran your Myth display at 800x600, but recorded your
programs at some other resolution, then in order to display the video
playback at full screen resolution the video would have to be scaled in
software, which takes a lot of CPU. Xv enables this to be done in
hardware.

XvMC is "X Video Motion Compensation". It is an extension to Xv that
enables the video card to perform part or all of the MPEG-1/2 decoding.
The level of support for this is heavily dependent on both the hardware
and the driver.

XV is efficient software decoding.
XVMC is hardware assisted software decoding.

On my nvidia 5200 + Celeron D @ 2.93ghz + 1Gb DDR 3200 RAM, normal mpeg2
playback takes about 13-15% CPU using XV.
Using XVMC, it takes between 8-10% CPU. So no, it's not a dramatic
difference unless you're using a low power CPU like a 733mhz

P3.

I don't even bother with XVMC for three reasons:
1.) The OSD is GRAYSCALE for some reason. (is this fixed in SVN yet?)
2.) FF, Rew, Next, and Prev cause about 5-10 seconds of jitter and
skipping when using XVMC.
3.) Even without any sort of de-interlacing turned on, I get really bad
flicker on the OSD.
For example, when I change the volume the OSD volume bar is
unintelligible it flickers so much.

Also, note that it really is just hardware assist. It's nothing like the
PVR 350's hardware playback.
With the 350, I could max out my CPU and compile code in the background
while watching a show
without any skipping, jitter, etc. With the nvidia card it doesn't
matter if I use XV or XVMC, I always
get some skipping and jitter while compiling code in the background or
burning a DVD. (would a real

P4 with HT enabled solve this?)

If the jitter, flicker, and grayscale problems could all be eliminated
then XVMC would kick-a**, but

as-is it seems rather pointless on my hardware.

I did not modify modprobe.conf at all. I'm using the default that came
with SUSE 9.3. I don't see anything in there related to ivtv. I can still
post it if you want.
HD-3000 is picking up digital Over the Air (SLC, UT area)
PVR-150 is using the S-Video Input from a Dish 301

If you're using the 2.6.12+ kernel, you should be able to get the HD-3000
working without any extra mods, patches or anything - the kernel fully
supports it.

I installed and configured the HD-3000 first. Getting the channels configured
was a little strange. I first use the MythTV channel scan feature. It worked
great.
But then pulling in the listing from zap2it had some problems - it created
duplicate channels for everything. To fix it, I modify the MySQL channels table
directly by copying the XMLTVID from the Zap2It records to the scanned records,
and then deleted the Zap2It channel records. mythfilldatabase works fine.

Adding the PVR-150 to MythTV was pretty straightforward, Zap2It worked fine.

and try FC4 with Jaro(e?)d's guide, but I'm having a helluvatime
getting an FC4 that passes the media test. I've donwloaded the discs
via BitTorrent, then FTPed them from Fedora, and I'm getting discs
that look good, that boot--the torrent one even installs
beautifully*--but that when FC checks them, says they don't pass the
media check. I just cracked open a new stack of TDK CDs, and still
got the media check failure. I've used at least two different CD
burners--one CD, one DVD, actually.

I don't know what the deal is. I'm using a CD Burner XP Pro to
burn the ISO images, which I've never had trouble with before. I used
it for Knoppmyth for example, with no problem, and Knoppix. Though, I
didn't do any media checks, I just booted them and they worked.
(Well, not KnoppMyth, but it didn't fail to install, just didn't do
what I wanted after the installation.)

I'm really at a loss, here. Short of going down and buying FC4
from the store.

* You might say, "Why do you care?" But I don't want to invest the
time in trying to make Myth work if I'm screwed from the start
because I've got a bad FC image.

I would start by making sure that the images you are downloading
are not currupt Check the MD5 sums of the image vs. what Fedora
publishes. On Linux, use md5sum. On windows, I use a utility called
Hashcalc from SlavaSoft.

http://www.slavasoft.com/hashcalc/

Once you know that you have good images, then you can focus on
getting the CDs burned correctly. Others more knowledgeable than I will
no doubt comment on that here.

Or, could it be something other than Rhine II? If it's Gigabit, it

(I run Gentoo on several boxes. Some with Rhine II cards and some with

Have to ask because I have never been able to figure out what the
difference is: What is the difference between xv and xvmc. I read
somewhere that xvmc is a hardware thing while xv is jsut somekind of
software extension. But if that were true, than why is xv dependant on
the graphics card driver at all? The ati cards can use xv, but not
xvmc, why is that, and is there a giant performance difference between
the two? I read on this list a guy using xvmc with an nvidia card
taking 2-3% proc time in X to run a 720x480 stream, which is exactly how
much is takes using xv with an ati card? Would it take even more using
xv and not xvmc? Sorry for the seemingly obvious to answer question.
My friend is getting ready to builf a myth box using nvidia and as I use
ATI I want to make sure I have enough knowledge to help.

Normally, PVR-350 audio is looped into a sound card; here you can
indicate when that is not the case. MythTV cannot control TV volume when
this option is checked.

Ya, I have a tendency to cut out cruft when I'm replying...

Anyway, I don't recall seeing any such box anywhere. Is that supposed to
be in mythtv-setup? Or in the config in the mythfrontend? I'll be more
than happy to look again when I get home :).

Frontend setup. It was added in changeset 5819 (
http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/changeset/5819 ), so if you're not running
SVN, you either need to patch your 0.18 version or upgrade to SVN (all
SVN disclaimers apply--you should be reading the -dev and -commits list
to run SVN, some things are currently disabled in SVN, etc.).

It's also my understanding that when there is no seperate sound card that
other media functions (such as playing DVD's, MP3's, and games) don't
work.

Well, the audio won't work. How the app deals with lack of audio is
dependent on the app.

Try using ivtvctl to pick input/output ports. If I'm understanding how
the PVR works, the device node is the same for svideo vs composite, but
you have to select which one to enable on the card with the ivtvctl
command. Another thing to try is to do one-sided tests: either test
recording OR video out individually, that should help you narrow down
where the problem lies.

I've noticed relatively high processor usage by xorg when playing back

it takes about 33%. This is on top of the normal usage by
mythfrontend. Mythfrontend takes about 13% to play back the recording.
Mythbackend takes about 35-30% to record a 480x480 stream. It seems to
me, it should take a lot more power to record something using software
encoding like I am than to actually play it back. I must be missing
hardware acceleration for the video playback, I'm guessing. I'm using a
radeon9600pro with the vga hooked directly up to the vga input of an lcd
TV. So the TV is acting like a monitor. Thing is, I have the
proprietary ATI fglrz drivers installed. But since I'm not really using
any of the functions of this driver, like opengl or TVout, maybe there
is a better driver I could install that could accelerate this 2D
video Anyone know what a normal amount for xorg to be using during
playback is, and if mine is abnormally high what are some methods I can
use to get that back down to a manageable 10-15%?

Raphael,

I use the fglrx drivers on my frontend system (2GHz Celeron, Radeon
9100IGP) and when just testing, got 3-4% X usage and 13% mythfrontend
usage whilst playing back a 720x576 MPEG2 recording.

First thing is to make sure you have xv working (type 'xvinfo' at the
prompt and check the output). The MPEG4 codecs require more CPU power
to decode than MPEG2 which is how they offer better compression
ratios.

Hey I got XV working by basically recompiling the kernel module from
fglrx. Not sure why it didn't work last time, now suddenly the kernel
module is working and gives me 3D acceleration, and as I suspected it
can also use XV at the same time (don't know why it couldn't, I guess
because the kernel module wasn't loading properly). Anyway, now that
that is solved, I get about 1% cpu usage in X when playing a 480x480
stream. So far so good. Only problem, now my overscan settings in
mythtv won't work properly. I normally set it to overscan the vertical
by 2, to get rid of some ugly noise on the top of all my cable channels
coming in (normally you wouldn't see on a tube TV). Now, when I use the
overscan, my video window which used to have black strips of about two
pixels above and below the image are now filled with garbage. It seems
to be whatever would be in the video frame buffer before the overscan
was applied to make those strips black. It is annoying because the
overscan gets rid of the cable TV noise inherent in the signal but now
causes the graphics card to add it's own noise. Has anyone seen this /
have a solution? It's a radeon 9600 pro using fglrx drivers. Hmm,
maybe I could try recording the video in a different resolution and see
if the problem is related to the actual screen resolution as video plays
back.
I also had the picture offset too far to the right in the x direction
but was able to fix that somehow using a combination of horizontal
overscan and scan placement. The horizontal overscan actually doesn't
work, but has to be set to particular values to get the horizontal scan
placement to work! Anyway, that's fixed, leaving me with only the
vertical overscan problems.
