Thanks Steven,

[newbie] Relevance of Mandrake

1999-05-24 Thread Idris Samawi Hamid

Dear folks:

I recently spoke to my computer hardware dealer about upgrading some of
my computer parts. He told me that once he was done he would install
RedHat 6.0 for me. I told him I wanted Mandrake and this is what he
said:

"Mandrake is dead. The whole idea behind Mandrake was to integrate KDE
with RedHat. Now that RedHat has KDE as an option, what's the need for
Mandrake?"

In response I muttered a couple of things about extra tidbits that come
with Mandrake but I did not sound very convincing, even to myself. I
think that Mandrake needs a new mission statement or manifesto; what's
present on the website is no longer satisfactory. I want to stick with
Mandrake in part because I believe that RedHat's former anti-KDE
attitude truly hurt (or at least slowed down) the Linux cause and I do
not really want to reward them for merely caving in to the pressure that
distros like Mandrake put them under. Unless Mandrake Linux convincingly
and clearly reassesses its raison d'etre and redirects its focus to
present and potential members of the Linux community, I am afraid that
this wonderful distro will indeed become irrelevant. Now it may be that
the leaders of the Mandrake organization are clear about this, but the

Actually, the RPM kernel upgrades do take care of that. The process is similar
when you first install Mandrake. You did not have to compile a kernel then.
Most probably, the new modules that come with the kernel have problems with
your hardware, probably the sound card.

I have seen various messages on this list about updating the kernel so I
thought I would share my experiences. IMHO, the easiest way is to use the
 RPMs built by Mandrake from

ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distributions/mandrake5.3/updates/kernel2.2/RPM
 S/kernel/

 I downloaded kernel-2.2.5-5mdk.i386 and kernel-headers-2.2.5-5mdk.i386
into
a directory I created on my hard drive. I checked both by changing to the
directory I downloaded them to and using the command:

 rpm -K --nopgp *rpm

Both should return a "size md5 ok" . I then installed both of them using
the
 commands:

 rpm -ivh kernel-2.2.5-5mdk.i386
 rpm -ivh kernel-headers-2.2.5-5mdk.i386

This automatically installed a directory in /usr/src called
 2.2.5-mdk and a file in /boot called vmlinuz-2.2.5-5mdk.

I then downloaded all the file updates from:

ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distributions/mandrake5.3/updates/kernel2.2/RPM
 S/updates/

and checked them using the same command as before then installed them
using:

 rpm -Uvh *.rpm

I then edited my /etc/lilo.conf file to add the following lines right
after
 the "timeout=50" line:

 image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.5-5mdk
   label=new
   root=/dev/hda(whatever your boot partition is)
   read-only

I then issued the command /sbin/lilo and received confirmation that "new"
had been added. It should be noted that I do not boot from a SCSI disk so
I
do not need a "initrd=" line in my lilo.conf file. I then rebooted and
selected "new" at the LILO boot prompt and booted a preconfigured kernel.

If you want to recompile the preconfigured kernel, you must also download
 and install
kernel-source-2.2.5-5mdk.i386.rpm. If you do not have pgcc installed as
your
compiler, you need to make the changes listed at:

 http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/kernel2.2-upgrade.html

There are also various fixes for post kernel installation problems found
 there.

YMMV and corrections to my method encouraged,

 HTH,

 Cindy

Hi,

Do you have any bootable kernels? If so, boot with a good kernel and
check that you have the correct root device set on this 2.2.9 kernel
which is giving problems. To check the root device, do 'rdev kernel
image' where kernel image is the kernel image file, usually zImage or
bzImage, created in /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot when you recompiled
the 2.2.9 kernel. OK, good luck,

1999-05-24 Thread Martin White

Just my 2p worth

I recently installed RH6 on a new hard disk having rebuilt my PC. Mainly for
curiosity as i knew i would blow it away again when Mandrake 6 comes out.

The following doesn't work out of the box...
1. BS/DEL problem with X.
2. UK keyboard map requested during install, but don't work.
3. Zip drive not preconfiured on desktop.
4. CD Writer not configured on Desktop (actually never gets detected, only
the reader that was in use during install - could this be addressed please
??)
5. No user mount/dismount on devices.
6. No ftp access to machine by default.

Now i'm not asking for help with these things (i can't be bothered, i'm only
binding time until Mandrake 6 comes out) - i could fix them all very easily,
but that's not the point newbies might not be able to !!

The point is, this is only a small list as i'm not using the box in question
at the moment, there were a lot more 'niggly' things. I can guarantee when
Mandrake 6 comes out all bar one of these will not need to be done on my
next install.

Need i say more...
Martin.

I agree Redhat 6.0 has problems but again these can be addressed and fixed
by RedHat so lets find another reason to keep Mandrake around as a
distro!!!
Mandrake can't keep coming out with versions that just fix or beautify
RedHat and still be considered a player in the distribution wars!! Please
MandrakeSoft brainstorm and come up with an idea that will make Mandrake a
 bit more unique!!!

I'm really not sure i want to start any kind of 'whos better than who'
thread here (but i'm going to anyway!). It's up to Mandrakesoft to defend
themselves on this one - after all it makes no odds to me which distribution
i use as long as it suits me.

All i really meant is that personally i find Mandrake to be more configured
the way i want as standard (and slightly more polished to boot). That in
turn saves me time and ultimately money.

If two shops were selling the same item of clothing, one fitted you slightly
better, and was available cheaper and easier (for me anyway) then you
wouldn't complain about the cheaper one existing then - would you ? .Why not
have the same item available from more than one place?

Obviously you can then go on to look at the differences in distro's in terms
of Lothar and all the other things that may or may not be in the pipeline.

Over to Mandrakesoft

Martin.

Granted, we haven't released many updates to 5.3 recently, but the one and

This can have only two reasons - either you tried to install a wrong RPM

OKay, this is what I did (sure you can do other ways but this is simple)
Mount the CD. Go to the directory where the 4.51 is then click on the
netscape-common rpm file. kpackage should pop up. Click on "replace files" check

Do the same for netscape-communicator rpm. You should not even have to reboot.
:-)

Oh yes, be sure to be root to install the rpms. But don't click on the desktop
netscape icon as root. Exit and logon as your normal user. For some reason,
clicking netscape (first time) as root makes netscape unusable for other users.
(it crashes - don't know why)

Hope this helps,

The easiest point-and-click way is to use kpackage. Start kpackage, then
use it to open the Netscape 4.5 rpm file that is the RPMS subdirectory on
the CD.Should be able to upgrade over top of the existing Netscape.
However, it might be safer to remove the old Netscape first...

1999-05-24 Thread Craig Burlingame

I am wondering if anybody out there has gotten their Linux workstation configured as
an IPX client. I do not want to be a server, just a client. Any help in pointing me
in the right direction is greatly appreciated.

Are you forgetting about cost? RH 6.0 Official is $80.00 with the core
version $40.00. I paid, like, $1.89 plus SH for Mandrake 5.3.
  Big difference!

Another reason why Mandrake is doomed... how can they keep on updating it, if
they don't get any morey for it? Simple answer: they don't. I learned my
lesson when KDE updated to 1.1.1 and installing it on my Mandrake proved
impossible (worse: I lost my Xwindows)
If you want it cheap, download it and burn your own. Mandrake is not the
standard and necver will be. Pity. It was nice while it lasted. :-(

Why does it need to be the standard? And exactly what are we judging it
against? My Mandrake installation runs exactly the same software as a
distribution that I might build myself. It's not like they're shipping
BSD libc with it or anything...

All this "top of the market" crap really drags on me. Can't we just
have a cool little distribution to play with?

  Subject: [newbie] A question, comment,

  1. How do I get kde to start with "num lock"
  on?
  2. After upgrading to netscape 4.6, i've lost the
use of my "delete key" in netscape. How do I get netscape to use the
  "delete" key?
3.Does anyone know of the progress Troll
Tech is having porting the "Opera Web Browser" over to linux?

On a side note ( and off-topic), if you're in
search of a nifty screen saver for linux, check out http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/
  , and help find ET.

  Thanks in advance,

1999-05-24 Thread James J. Capone

When I log into Linux as a different user for privlages like ICQ and IRC,
Since I have upgraded to the 2.2.9 kernel KDE can not make ICONS or a
DIRECTORY for the user I logged in as. Than it loads and shows only the
background and that is it. No icons/menus/time/etc... Can some one please

I don't believe Pine deals with POP accounts, so it wouldn't be able to
directly get your mail from your ISP.
