Thanks Steven, I ran #/bin/bash rm -fR /lib/modules/2.2.9 I then re compiled the Kernel from scratch and it works great. The only thing that fails at Loadup is the MIDI modules. It says it can not find the midi module. That is it. Thanks again
[newbie] Relevance of Mandrake
Dear folks: I recently spoke to my computer hardware dealer about upgrading some of my computer parts. He told me that once he was done he would install RedHat 6.0 for me. I told him I wanted Mandrake and this is what he said: "Mandrake is dead. The whole idea behind Mandrake was to integrate KDE with RedHat. Now that RedHat has KDE as an option, what's the need for Mandrake?" In response I muttered a couple of things about extra tidbits that come with Mandrake but I did not sound very convincing, even to myself. I think that Mandrake needs a new mission statement or manifesto; what's present on the website is no longer satisfactory. I want to stick with Mandrake in part because I believe that RedHat's former anti-KDE attitude truly hurt (or at least slowed down) the Linux cause and I do not really want to reward them for merely caving in to the pressure that distros like Mandrake put them under. Unless Mandrake Linux convincingly and clearly reassesses its raison d'etre and redirects its focus to present and potential members of the Linux community, I am afraid that this wonderful distro will indeed become irrelevant. Now it may be that the leaders of the Mandrake organization are clear about this, but the info on the web page (e.g. http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fpolicy.html and http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ffaq.html ) does not reflect this in a coherent and convincing way. Re: [newbie] Kernel installation(Long message)
Actually, the RPM kernel upgrades do take care of that. The process is similar when you first install Mandrake. You did not have to compile a kernel then. Most probably, the new modules that come with the kernel have problems with your hardware, probably the sound card. Gilbert "James J. Re: [newbie] Kernel installation(Long message)
Hi Cindy, gave this a try with my new 5.3 install.Everything seemed to go smoothly except it created a slightly different filename, 'vmlinuz-2.2.5-ac3-5mdk'. I'm not sure what the significance of 'ac3' is. When I boot the new kernel it gets down to the point of 'finding module dependicies' and just stops.Fortunately I can reboot and choose my old kernel, but I'd like to know what went wrong and how to fix. Anyone have an idea? IMHO, the easiest way is to use the RPMs built by Mandrake from ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distributions/mandrake5.3/updates/kernel2.2/RPM S/kernel/ I downloaded kernel-2.2.5-5mdk.i386 and kernel-headers-2.2.5-5mdk.i386 into a directory I created on my hard drive. I checked both by changing to the directory I downloaded them to and using the command: rpm -K --nopgp *rpm Both should return a "size md5 ok" . I then installed both of them using the commands: rpm -ivh kernel-2.2.5-5mdk.i386 rpm -ivh kernel-headers-2.2.5-5mdk.i386 This automatically installed a directory in /usr/src called 2.2.5-mdk and a file in /boot called vmlinuz-2.2.5-5mdk. I then downloaded all the file updates from: ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distributions/mandrake5.3/updates/kernel2.2/RPM S/updates/ and checked them using the same command as before then installed them using: rpm -Uvh *.rpm I then edited my /etc/lilo.conf file to add the following lines right after the "timeout=50" line: image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.5-5mdk label=new root=/dev/hda(whatever your boot partition is) read-only I then issued the command /sbin/lilo and received confirmation that "new" had been added. It should be noted that I do not boot from a SCSI disk so I do not need a "initrd=" line in my lilo.conf file. I then rebooted and selected "new" at the LILO boot prompt and booted a preconfigured kernel. If you want to recompile the preconfigured kernel, you must also download and install kernel-source-2.2.5-5mdk.i386.rpm. If you do not have pgcc installed as your compiler, you need to make the changes listed at: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/kernel2.2-upgrade.html There are also various fixes for post kernel installation problems found there. YMMV and corrections to my method encouraged, HTH, Cindy

Re: [newbie] Relevance of Mandrake
Just my 2p worth I recently installed RH6 on a new hard disk having rebuilt my PC. Mainly for curiosity as i knew i would blow it away again when Mandrake 6 comes out. The following doesn't work out of the box... 1. BS/DEL problem with X. 2. UK keyboard map requested during install, but don't work. 3. Zip drive not preconfiured on desktop. 4. CD Writer not configured on Desktop (actually never gets detected, only the reader that was in use during install - could this be addressed please ??) 5. No user mount/dismount on devices. 6. No ftp access to machine by default. Now i'm not asking for help with these things (i can't be bothered, i'm only binding time until Mandrake 6 comes out) - i could fix them all very easily, but that's not the point newbies might not be able to !! The point is, this is only a small list as i'm not using the box in question at the moment, there were a lot more 'niggly' things. I can guarantee when Mandrake 6 comes out all bar one of these will not need to be done on my next install. Need i say more... It's up to Mandrakesoft to defend themselves on this one - after all it makes no odds to me which distribution i use as long as it suits me. All i really meant is that personally i find Mandrake to be more configured the way i want as standard (and slightly more polished to boot). That in turn saves me time and ultimately money. If two shops were selling the same item of clothing, one fitted you slightly better, and was available cheaper and easier (for me anyway) then you wouldn't complain about the cheaper one existing then - would you ? .Why not have the same item available from more than one place?
