Re: [newbie] X window remote access?
There's two parts to X: the server (the display unit, the machine you're sitting at) and the client (the programs that connect to the X server to display their output). Telnet opens a session so you can run programs, but you're not necessarily running an X Server which can accept display output. If it's on another UNIX machine, you just need to run `xhost +remote.hostname` to add the remote host to the display list. Then, on the remote host (through your telnet session) you'll need to set the DISPLAY environment variable approprately. in bash, you can `export DISPLAY=remote.hostname:0.0`. Then try `xterm `. This should open an xterm, displaying it on the machine you're sitting at. The window manager is usually handled locally, unless you're using XDMCP (at least, this has been true in my experience). So while kfm and even kpanel might work, kwm (the window manager component, handles window borders, shading, focus, etc.) will not, unless you can terminate the local window manager. You might also look for secure shell (ssh); it automatically forwards X connections. Much easier, and more secure, than telnet xhost. In this situation, ssh will even (by default) let you log in as root (no need to su). -Matt Stegman [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Wed, 8 Dec 1999, Eric Mings wrote: I have read some information about x window being a server and client program. Re: [newbie] LILO
I think the typical way to get rid of LILO is with the DOS/Windows fdisk... I think the command is fdisk -mbr or fdisk mbr, something like that. Should clear your master boot record (which means you'll have to reinstall NT's bootloader). Actually, no. NT puts it's bootloader on it's own partition, so it depends on your MBR to load it. A DOS MBR (what you get after running (fdisk /mbr from DOS) loads the MBR of the active partition. If this is your NT partition, then NT gets loaded. So, if you do the "fdisk /mbr" thing, make sure your NT boot partition is active. -Matt Stegman [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I, myself being a newbie, had the same problem as you. I did however manage to get the silly thing to work by following the directions included with the readme that gets unzipped from the tarball. Note however that I found them to be a little confusing but by stumbling around I finally figured it out. Let's see if we can keep you from having the same problem. I'm going to assume you have very little knowledge (like myself) so forgive me if I go into too much detail, it's easier than assuming too much. NO RECOMPILING OF THE KERNEL SHOULD BE NEEDED, so don't panic. 8-) 1. log in as root ( I selected KDE as my login simply because I could easily open windows and move file around) 2. download the latest tarball from http://opensource.soundblaster.com to a temporary folder in your home 3. disconnect from the Internet (don't want to stay connected to long for security reasons) 4. from the KDE menu bar open your home directory and select the folder where you downloaded the tarball 5. with the cursor over the window press "CTRL + T" to open a terminal window (or open it from the file pull down menu) 6. in the new terminal window type "tar xvzf emu10k1.whatever.the.name.is". this should create a sub folder which will contain a whole bunch of files. the 2 important ones to you will be the readme and a "makefile", sorry I think that's the name. 7. tag the readme file and in there will be a whole lotta scary words like recompile and kernel - IGNORE THEM. just leave this window open so you can follow the directions. 8. using the "UP ARROW" buttons in your home window back out to the "root" directory and find the "/etc" folder and then the "/etc/conf.modules" file. right mouse click it and tag it. this should open an editor window and you can proceed screw things up from there (just kidding). 9. do a "save as" from the file pull down menu to give yourself a back up, something like old.conf.modules and close the window. Very important here. if you don't close the file after saving and editing it the computer will NOT recognize the saved information - this cost me several days of head banging trying to figure out what I did wrong. 10. refresh the folder window and select the "conf.modules" file. this shooed open the file in a new editor window. 11. the readme file tells you to remove the lines referring to "soundcore". go ahead and remove them (if you've got any, it is possible you may not if you haven't installed any other sound cards) then add the "alias -something-something- sound" line at the end of the file per the "readme" file. 12. next add the two lines referring to the "insmod -something-something" (can you tell I have a poor memory and am not sitting in front of my linux box 8-)). 13. save the file and CLOSE the editor, you're done with the scary part. 14. go back to your "home" directory window and press the home icon in the tool bar. next select the temp folder with the downloaded tarball file, then the "emu10k1" sub folder until you see the "readme" and "makefile" files again. now open a terminal window (CTRL + T). important, you must be in the sub folder when doing the next step. 15. now you're ready to compile the sound module a. type "make" b. type "make clean" c. type "make install" the "make install should take care of copying the "emu10k1.0" file the proper directory for you as instructed by the "readme" file. 16. YOU'RE DONE. I always logout and reboot but I'm certain there is a better way (like I said I'm new to this) when you log back on you should be able to get sound ( watch the startup listing to see if any modules fail ). IF YOU DON'T then there is one more step we need to take. 17. goto the sub folder that contained the "readme" and "makefile" and select the "makefile". this should open a new editor. 18. in the very beginning are a couple of line and I believe the third line contains a reference to "versions". it is currently set to "versions = n", change the "n" to a "y" and save the file and CLOSE it. rerun step 15 above. this should fix the problem. good luck and drop me a line if I left any thing out. -- Joseph S. Yeah, this really is OT but I'll take a shot anyway... what happens when you hit F5? Does the directory listing go blank and then reappear? This would indicate that it actually is refreshing. If it's not doing this, you probably need to go to the view menu and select the refresh choice from there... even if it is exhibiting the above behaviour, I would try going directly to the menu choice. Re: [newbie] OTWAY OT WinNT Explorer won't refresh the diskette
Recently I installed a Promise Ultra66 IDE controller and also a Quantum Fireball Plus KA 18.1 GB hard drive (connected to the Promise Ultra66). A couple weeks later, I installed an HP CD Writer Plus 9100i. After installing this hardware, my Windows NT Explorer no longer refreshes the diskette between disk changes. I have the same problems under Win95 Windows Explorer. I do not have this problem under the Linux Mandrake OS. Matt, I don't have an answer, but I understand the problem. The HP drivers have a negative affect on the floppy disk drivers in NT. (I don't use 95, so I don't know about it.) I have, so far, not found a solution to this. It is absolutely a software issue in that the OS no longer sees the "disk change" line toggle from the hardware. But I haven't been able to fix it and I have been able to duplicate that installing the HP software in several IBM portables renders the floppies inoperative. The reason you can still copy "file1" is because the OS caches the file in memory, and since it no longer sees the disk change signal it just does the "copy" from the cache. You can force an update by trying to access the disk with a write, and the FAT will be wrong so the OS will update. But that is a miserable pain in the butt. Perhaps with that as a starting point someone else can point both of us in the right direction. Michael
Re: [newbie] OTWAY OT WinNT Explorer won't refresh the diskette
Mas a workround right-click the window background (or pull down the view menu) and choose refresh after changing a floppy. Alan M Thompson wrote: WARNING - This is way OT from Linux Mandrake. If I eject diskette1 and insert diskette2, the Windows NT Explorer still shows "file1". I hit F5 to refresh the Windows NT Explorer, but the view does not change and show the "actual" contents of diskette2. With diskette2 in the drive, I am mysteriously able to copy "file1" from the diskette to the hard drives or HP 9100i. I can take the diskettes out of the diskette drive and still mysteriously copy a file from diskette1 to either the hard drives or HP 9100i. Please help. [newbie] installing L-M 6.1 to new Dell Inspiron 7500
Hi all, Well, I want to install L-M 6.1 on my new laptop and have a question or two before going ahead. The machine comes with Windows installed on the Hard Drive. I want to split the drive into a Windows partition and a Linux partition. Will Disk Druid resize the Windows partition without shredding it? There's only about 1 gig of info on the partition and it's a 10 gig disk. I want to split it half-and-half with Linux. Also, does anyone have experience with installing Linux to an Inspiron 7500 and have advice or things I should be aware of before pressing on? Thanks in advance! Gregg
Re: [newbie] installing L-M 6.1 to new Dell Inspiron 7500
Greggno, disk druid does not have that capability. In the dosutils directory of your installation CD there is a dos program called fips.exe. This will do dynamic resizing, but be sure to read the docs thoroughly. If you have Partition Magic available to you it's a lot easier to use, but fips will do the job. Re: [newbie] Kde Template/Autostart
I use Autostart (to run kgoodstuff and kwikdisk) when I run KDE, although I've been using Window Maker lately(I think I just switched window managers). If there is a comparably easy way to start programs when KDE starts take them out (something like .xinit right?). Re: [newbie] installing L-M 6.1 to new Dell Inspiron 7500
Just like the e-mail message you got, use FIPS. I used it on *my* new Dell that had only one WIndows 98 partition. Worked very well. I went the extra mile and removed my Windows cache file and defragged the disk. Used FIPS then re-set the cache. Been working great with no problems. I have had good luck with Partition Magic and recommend that.
