According to the manufacturer's web page, no. I haven't gotten the
drive yet so I'm not sure from personal experience. I suspect I can
trust them on this.

 I think it's safe to assume booting from a dvd isn't a
major problem SuSE is doing it. Basicly what was done was just to allow
 for a 4gig iso9660 filesystem.

Okay, I already have a normal DVD drive on this box and I have been
booting CDs from it but never a DVD since software isn't usually
distributed that way. It is good to hear that at least one of the
distributions is doing it.

cdrecord is your only option barring another OS. I remeber hearing about a
packet driver maybe being started, but don't know what became of
it. Standard usage of even cd-rw drives use cdrecord's -blank switch to re
prep the disk for a re-write.

I was afraid of that SIGH. Oh well, since you have heard that
cdrecord works with DVD-Ram it isn't that big a deal. At least there
is a solution that works GRIN.

Thanks.

Probably some of the more useful options are -o, -I, -L and -l. -o lets you
specify an output file, otherwise the compiler will default to an a.out binary.
-I and -L let you specify the locations of include files and library files
respectively, useful if you have libraries or headers built outside of the
default dirs and -l lets you specify a certain libFile to link against.
Usually you can bypass -L by symlinking to /lib/whatever or /usr/lib/whatever
or adding the path to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH var. So for example we have a
program called. . .magic_box1.c that uses OpenGL (Mesa) libraries. To compile
and link it we would say:

gcc -o magic_box1 -lglut -lGL -lGLU -lMesaGL -lMesaGLU magic_box1.c

The order isnt really important ie you could put the source file first then the
options and the output file or whatever. . .hope that helps. . .

As root, type "sndconfig" from the command prompt. That should help

think, is not yet supported, but other than that, most CL sound cards
are supported, even if you have to compile a driver for 'em.

The SB PCI 128 is supported. Choose the Ensoniq 1370 chipset.

JenniferXF86Setup and xf86config do not have spaces in them as
you've typed them and it's the /etc/X11/XF86Config file not the
/etc/X11/XFConfig file. Use one of the many console based text editors
like vi, vim, emacs or joe. Joe is probably the easiest one to use if
you've not used any of them before. Type joe /etc/X11/XF86Config to
edit. In KDE use kedit, it's the default, you judt click on the file
icon to open the file in the editor.

Re: [newbie] Icons to Large

2000-01-02 Thread Ryan Sumstad

###FROM linuxnewbie.org
Your XF86Config Travel Guide

This is how I get through the xf86config procedure. I already know my video
card (Trident 9680 with 8 megs), my monitor specs (horiz= 30-35[k],
vertical= 43-90), and my mouse is a PS/2 3-button type. My keyboard is a
standard 101 key type.

From the command line I type xf86config and I see that I can quit at anytime
with ctrl-c. For the sections that say "Hit return to continue, I simply hit
ret. For the mouse I choose a PS/2 mouse. Emulate 3-buttons? No. This
means to allow a two button mouse act like a it has 3 by pressing both at
once. (For Linux, a 3-button mouse is very convenient.) For mouse device,
I hit to select the default /dev/mouse. Make a link to /dev/mouse? Yes
. XKeyboard? Yes. For the keyboard I choose a Standard 101-key. Enable
bindings? Yes.

Next is the section about hsync in kHz. Even though your monitor might be
able to do 1024x768, Linux might complain... possibly a reason why "startx"
fails. Don't worry about it. For now you can try something more
conservative, like XF86_VGA16 server. Even though you only get 16
colors, at least you 'get your foot in the door' as far as X-Windows is
concerned. On the other hand, I have gotten good results by choosing the
last one "Enter your own horizontal sync range". So I type 30-35 (do not
type "kHz"). Next is the vertical synchronization rate. I choose the last
one:
"Enter your own vertical sync range" so I type 43-90 (no spaces). (Please
note that you should NEVER enter something beyond what your monitor
can do.)

This is how I answer the next section:
Monitor definition: Impression IM1428SV
Vendor name: Impression
Model name: IM1428SV

Next it asks "Do you want to look at the card database?" Yes. I find my card
happens to be #577 on the list (Trident TGUI9680). Be sure to get the
EXACT right one... don't choose something that is close. I actually
purchased a new video card for Linux because I knew it was on the list. Then
it shows the one you selected and the server (Remember this server name.)
and it says "Do NOT probe clocks or use any Clock line."

Next is the dreaded XF86 server. Here is where different choices may or
may not work -depending on the phase of the moon. I usually choose the
last one "Choose the server from the card definition, XF86_(whatever). This
is the best choice, however, if you experience problems you can try
something a bit more conservative like XF86_VGA16. Even though you
only get 16 colors, it's enough to get X to work. You can change it later .

Next it asks "Do you want to set a symbolic link?" Yes!
Next is the video memory. I choose the last one "Other" and type 8192.
Now this next section is kind of lame:
Video card definition: Trident TGUI9680
Vendor: Trident
Model (board): TGUI9680 (DUH!?)

Next, I do NOT want a Clockchip setting and I do NOT want it to run 'X
-probeonly'. (Some video cards need clocks.) The next section is where you
can change the modes (for your monitor) .
Some people select "The modes are are OK", But I prefer to go thru each
one. I start with "1 Change the modes for 8bpp" and then somthing like
"432". Then it asks if you want a virtual screen.

This means a huge screen that is way bigger than what you see on the
monitor. I like to have the virtual screen that is just a little bit bigger
than the
monitor... that way I can reach buttons at the bottom of the screen like
"Apply" and "OK". To To do this you must edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config
file. (I'll talk about editing later). Keep going thru this until you are
satisfied
with the settings. Choose the last one "The modes are OK, continue". Finally
it asks "Shall I write it to /etc/X11/XF86Config?" Yes.

Do not type "startx" just yet. You should at least look at the file by
typing:
cd /etc
ls | more
Now look for XF86Config. If you don't see it, type:
cd /etc/X11
ls | more

There you should see the XF86Config file. Now type:
more XF86Config (to quit, type "q")
and use the space bar to go down each page. You will find a section that
says something like "Virtual 1600 1280". This is just too big of a screen fo
r me. I always edit this line with the vi editor so that the two numbers are
just a little bit bigger than my resolution. If you have 800x600, you can
set
virtual to, say, 875 675 and see how you like it. The reason I like the vi
editor is it exists on all UNIX and Linux systems. It's not so hard once you
get used to it. I type: vi /etc/X11/XF86Config "j" goes down, "k" goes up,
and "h" and "l" go from side to side. To actually insert text, hit "i" and
to get
back out of the text insert mode, hit esc.
To exit and save changes type:
esc :wq!
To exit without saving changes type:
:q!

Now try starting X with the command startx. Don't worry if it fails. Read
the error message and carefully go over your settings.

No.

It's a "chkdsk" for linux that occurs after a certain number of mounts.

Hello Ken
No you should not be worried if there are no error messages after the disk
checking completes.
Linux does not expect to be shutdown often.

I'm assuming that your machine is coming up in runlevel 5 graphical mode

Runlevel 5...is there level 4 graphical mode? What is with these runlevels,
I see them all over but don't quite understand. Just each runlevel is a
level of complexity, where each level depends on the processes going on in
 the level beneath?

There are four runlevels you need to keep in mind: RunLevel 1 which
is a single-user, no network, no GUI boot up. Run Level 3 which is a
multi-user, networked boot up, and Run Level 5 which is the GUI,
multi-user boot up. Now, these are different for each distribution of
Linux. Also, Run Level 6 is the "reboot" run level, so if all else
fails and you can get a command prompt, but need to shut things down,
you can init 6 and reboot. :-)

type " linux 3 " with out the quotes. And don't take all
day. you only have a few
seconds. This will boot you into linux without X.

 How did you know this?

Experience. :-) Trust us... the default boot delay is something like
15 seconds... VERY short!

you need to install the kernel-devel packages, including the C++
compiler, libraries and headers.

Also, is there a chance that someday Netscape's handling of the JavaScript
"alert" method will be fixed? Maybe I'm asking the wrong people. But
 overlapping windows really annoy me.

You're asking the wrong people. Netscape is the company responsible
for fixing the bugs in their software...and they're apparently not
doing much work on Linux.

Well, I'll admit up front that I don't have a CDR or CDRW. However, I
think I recall reading from various people that you need to have a
second entry in /etc/fstab for the CDRW and for the CD-player side
of things. Set both NOT to automount and you should be able to select
the one you need at a given time.

Yup. :-) Thanks for catching that. So used to having to tell
people to type "xf86config" instead of "XF86Config." :-) Guess I
assumed that XF86Setup was the same way... *sigh* Why can't they make
a sym-link to it in all lower-case? ;-)

In /etc/lilo.conf type: append="mem=128mb"
OR, if you already HAVE an append statement, just tack the
"mem=128mb" to the existing statement.

To paste in nutscraper use your third mouse button, if you have set
2-button mouse to emulate the 3-button mouse then to paste simply
hold both buttons down simultaneously.

The order isnt really important ie you could put the source file first then the
options and the output file or whatever. . .hope that helps. . .

want to set up a webserver for the network using Linux-Mandrake 6.0 but
can't seem to get the Ethernet card or the computer to be seen by them or
for the Linux machine to see the Windows98 workstations.

I've set up the Ethernet card manually and tried to ping the others but no

[newbie] FW: oracle installation :newuser login failed in kde =required re boot

2000-01-02 Thread Hassani Youssouf

To my surprise

The changes | tried to impliment upon the user take effect only after reboot
,I thought linux did not need so much reboot compared to a nt box
What is funny when you go to user manager and you define the groups the user
belong to ,it does not not automatically add the user in the groups window.

Thank you all for the previous reply to the questions I have sent .
During the preparation stage of installing oracle 8.05 for linux I am
encountering probleme creating user and adding it to the group
I have followed the how to install oracle :
 created a group dba
 created a user oracle
 pwd oracle
 typed a new password
log out tried to log back into KDE :login failed
Okay then I go to emacs passwd
edit user put * instead of password
 again failed
 groups oracle =id:oracle:no such user
and yes after each modification using emacs I think it autosaves the
 changes
Thank you in advance for the help
